I think I need to brush up on my eighties horror knowledge and film watching because I realised when I had the chance to watch Nightmares In A Damaged Brain that I had barely even heard about it and had no idea what the movie was actually about. In fact, outside of the big hitters I haven’t watched as many as I should have, and the ‘video nasties’ are a good place to start.
For those that somehow don’t know the video nasty era in Britain was a period of time when films were banned, often copies destroyed and occasionally people who sold or released the films were imprisoned (it was a crazy time and the...

By the late ’80s, horror was pretty much done with slashers for a while. Jason and his pals were seeing diminishing returns at the box office, and most of the splattery goods being sold delved into creatures, bugs, or the supernatural. But no one told that to the makers of The House on Tombstone Hill (1989), who decided to revive stalk and slash to dance with the undead for a super gory and entertaining flick, brought back to Blu-ray life in pristine glory by Vinegar Syndrome.
If that title sounds unfamiliar, perhaps you know the film as The Dead Come Home. No? Well, then you may have heard the title Dead Dudes in the House, bestowed by Troma, who picked it up for home video distribution, slapped on a House Party font and a group of white hip-hoppers on the cover who have nothing to do with the film. But Troma...

“Game of Thrones” has ruled the non-prosthetic makeup Emmy category for four out of its six seasons — winning Emmys the last two years in a row. But the race is wide open this season during its hiatus, with the nominees ranging from perennials “Vikings” (its fourth nomination) and “Penny Dreadful” (its first nomination) to newcomers “Westworld,” “Stranger Things,” and “This Is Us.”
While the Norse-driven “Vikings” (“All His Angels”) offered lots of tattoos, scars, and blood, and the supernatural “Penny Dreadful” (“Perpetual Night”) boasted a rogues gallery of scars, creepy flesh, and gore, the race will come down to sci-fi dual universes and time-hopping family drama.
“Westworld” (“The Original”)
Christien Tinsley and his team (Myriam Arougheti, Gerald Quist, Lydia Milars, Ed French) forged new territory in finding a balance between beauty, period, reality, and fantasy for characters in the western theme park and mechanistic programming center. In order to conceptualize...

One of the lesser-known horror anthologies of the 1980s, 1986’s Deadtime Stories is a title of which I’ve been familiar for years, but it took me a long time to actually get around to seeing it. And because of the film’s long history of botched home video releases, the versions I’ve been able to watch in the past haven’t been of the best quality. As a result, I had an unfair opinion of the movie. Thankfully, Scream Factory has put Deadtime Stories out on Blu-ray for the first time and allowed me the opportunity not just to revisit it, but to revise my opinion. It’s more fun than I gave it credit for.

This is another Blu-ray release, that I wish existed a year prior. Last summer, we recorded a retrospective podcast series, covering the entirety of the Sleepaway Camp series, and could have really used a loaded, Uncut Blu-ray release of the first film. We made due with what was available, though, and now I can revisit Scream Factory’s new Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release of the film, with the image of the DVD still fresh in my mind for comparison. If you are interested in our retrospective look at the series in its entirety, you can check that out here. I’ve seen this movie at least a dozen times, and as many problems as it has, it still manages to entertain me just as much, each new visit. I know the ending is coming, and I know what to expect, but it still has that same impact it had on me as a kid.

Robert Hiltzik's entire movie career has basically been in telling one story, that of Sleepaway Camp. Hiltzik wrote and directed the original, as well as Return to Sleepaway Camp. So who better to discuss Sleepaway Camp's move to Blu-ray from Scream Factory on May 27 than Robert Hiltzik himself.
Hiltzik recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about some interesting aspects of this horror staple, which was released in 1983. "I was in graduate film school at the time and I wanted to do my own film," Hiltzik said, when discussing the origins of the movie. "I wanted to figure out what would get me into the marketplace the easiest. The path of least resistance. I figured dramas and comedies would be very subjective, but everyone likes a good horror film. And I figured shooting a horror film in one location would keep the budget modest. So I thought...

Greg Nicotero directing Scott Ian from Anthrax for AMC's "The Walking Dead" Webisodes
The Emmy Award Winning special effects make-up artist and Horror Makeup legend Greg Nicotero has been upgraded to Executive Producer of AMC's The Walking Dead in a deal that intriguingly includes a first-look clause that will give Nicotero the opportunity to pitch his own series to the channel in the future.
The move is a smart one by AMC. With pundits everywhere questioning the removal of another legend from The Walking Dead, former show-runner and mast filmmaker Frank Darabont, Nicotero's promotion to the production team could very easily balance out the negative press. As any horror fan knows, the special effects makeup chair is considered as important as the director's, and even the writers. Skyler Samuels most recently starred on the ABC series The Gates, opposite Rhona Mitra and Colton Haynes. She also appeared in the films The Stepfather (with Penn Badgley, Sela Ward, and Dylan Walsh) and Furry Vengeance (with Brendan Fraser). Other notable roles include guest-starring turns on Drake And Josh, The Suite Life With Zack And Cody, That's So Raven and Wizards Of Waverly Place.
Samuels is a full time high school student in Los Angeles where she resides with her family. In her spare time, she is an avid photographer, enjoys Pilates, traveling (with an affinity for France where she gets a chance to utilize her linguistic skills) and spending time with family and friends.
On the new ABC Family soap The Nine Live Of Chloe King (premiering tomorrow, Tuesday June 14 at 9/8c), Samuels stars as Chloe -- a pretty, smart, slightly off beat teenage girl with a serious independent streak.

Nightmare After years of talk, it seems that the early 80's horror slasher Nightmare is inching even closer to a DVD release date. Code Red has been promising this title for years while fans have grown impatient. Last year, this title alone nearly bankrupted Code Red as compossing special features for the film started costing them an arm and leg. Somehow or another, Code Red managed to survive and now it seems that Code Red could finally be releasing this title sometime in July. This is all the more evident by an all new special feature Code Red has put together for the film.

Melting astronauts! Sentient ooze! We celebrate cinema’s most memorable goo-filled films…

On Thursday December 17th, nominations were announced for the 16th annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards. Jason Reitman’s “Up in the Air” walked away with three nominations including best actor for George Clooney, and best supporting actress for Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick, both of whom sat down with MakingOf for an exclusive interview earlier this month.
“Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” and “Inglorious Basterds” also walked away with 3 nominations each.
Carey Mulligan received a best actress nomination for her performance in “An Education,” a role that she discusses in a recent interview with MakingOf. Adittionally, “An Education” was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, which could mean potential awards for seven cast members including Dominic Cooper and Alfred Molina, who talked with MakingOf at September’s Toronto International Film Festival
Also receiving double nominations were “Invictus,” “Nine,” Katheryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker,...
“Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” and “Inglorious Basterds” also walked away with 3 nominations each.

The Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced this morning in Los Angeles at the Pacific Design Center’s Silver Screen Theater in West Hollywood. Some of the noms, or lack of, that make you go, hmmmm. The surprise, but crazy Best Supporting Actress nomination for Diane Kruger in Inglourious Basterds, no Up In The Air nom for Best Ensemble, even though it saw three acting nominations, and nothing for Julianne Moore of A Single Man or Alfred Molina of An Education.

The morning the Screen Actors Guild announced the nominees for the 16th annual SAG awards. The actual ceremony will be held Saturday, January 23rd. There are a lot of gay-faves on the list of nominees.
For starters, Colin Firth picked up a nomination for A Single Man,and Sigourney Weaver is in the running for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries thanks to Prayers for Bobby.
Freshmen series Glee and Modern Family are competing against each other for Beest TV Comedy Ensemble.
And surprisingly (at least for me) the cast of True Blood is up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
You can check out the full list of nominess after the break!

"Inglourious Basterds," "Precious" and "Up in the Air" led the list, with three nominations each, as the Screen Actors Guild unveiled noms for its 16th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Thursday morning.
"Basterds" and "Precious" were both nominated for outstanding performance by a motion picture cast -- SAG's equivalent of a best picture award -- along with "An Education," "The Hurt Locker" and the musical "Nine."
On the TV side, SAG also spread the love around, doling out three noms each to "30 Rock," "The Closer" and "Dexter."
"The Hurt Locker's" Jeremy Renner, who was overlooked when the Golden Globe Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday, made the list of motion picture lead actor nominees along with Jeff Bridges ("Crazy Heart"), George Clooney ("Up in the Air"), Colin Firth ("A Single Man") and Morgan Freeman ("Invictus").

Mike Myers jumped at the chance to play a British General in Quentin Tarantino's new movie Inglourious Basterds, because the cameo fulfilled a childhood dream.
The actor's British parents both served in the armed forces and he spent his childhood playing soldiers and fantasising about following in their footsteps.
His role as General Ed French in the new World War II movie is only a fleeting one - but Myers was thrilled nonetheless.
He explains, "My mum was in the air force and my dad was in the British army.
"I always wanted to be the British general who explains the mission, and in this movie I get to be."...
