“Question not my judgment, Malachai. I am the giver of His word.”
It’s the summer of 1984. The pavement is hot, the corn is high, and the eerie voices of children can be heard singing in a distant barn. Something sinister walks behind the rows. Is it a cult of killer children ripped from the Old Testament? Is a vengeful deity who demands human sacrifice? Is it a roving mound of dirt speeding through the corn or a loud little girl who draws in her sleep? In the latest episode of The Long Watch, The Losers’ Club will pick up their scythes and venture into the fragrant fields to unearth the secrets of Fritz Kiersch’s Children of the Corn.

In Fritz Kiersch's bonkers 1984 horror film "Children of the Corn," the small town of Gatlin, Nebraska is taken over by a gaggle of murderous children. Gatlin's kids have killed the town's grown-ups at the behest of an off-screen deity named He Who Walks Behind the Rows, some kind of harvest-related being that demands death and blood. The kiddie cult is headed by Isaac (John Franklin), a soft-spoken Quaker type who quietly decrees violent action from his flock. Isaac would eventually be betrayed by his gruff lieutenant Malachi (Courtney Gaines) who ties Isaac to a cross. Franklin would reprise his role in 1999 for "Children of the Corn 666: Isaac's Return.
Franklin has had a respectable acting career since his Corny debut, having played multiple voice roles in the '80s, as well as Cousin Itt in 1991's "The Addams Family." Franklin also showed up in the notorious cult film "Tammy and the T-Rex...

It’s not about how you start but how you finish. With four leg wins, Greg and John Franklin were the favorites heading into Wednesday’s “The Amazing Race 35” finale in Seattle, but the brothers struggled on their first two tasks of the Scramble — let’s just say glassblowing and roadie work are not their forte. They were in third place at one point, but thanks to some good directions and John’s “crazy memory” at the final memory challenge, they passed Rob and Corey, and Joel and Garrett to claim the $1 million prize.
“That was probably one of the worst legs that Johnny and I have had in terms of the mistakes that we made,” Greg tells Gold Derby (watch above). “So watching it back was a little cringey because you’re like, ‘Oh, my goodness, the amp is right there! C’mon, people! Figure it out here.’ But...

Two Lost Doctor Who Episodes Have Been Found, But Their Guardians Are Too 'Terrified' To Return Them
"Doctor Who" has long been regarded as one of the pillars of science fiction television. Unfortunately, back in the 1960s and 1970s, the BBC regarded previously broadcast "Doctor Who" episodes as junk that was just taking up space, so the episodes were destroyed to make room for new programming. Some lost "Doctor Who" stories have since been recovered from collectors, overseas broadcasters, and -- in the case of two episodes of the serial "The Daleks' Master Plan" -- in the basement of a Mormon church. However, despite decades of searching, 97 episodes remain lost.
That number could be whittled down to 95, according to a new report by The Observer, but there's a problem. Film collector John Franklin, who knows the locations of the two missing episodes, says their guardians are afraid that if they come forward their precious mementos could be confiscated, and that they might even face criminal prosecution. The...

“What would you do? If your friend died and you were starving, would you eat him?” National Geographic Explorer Mark Synnott mulled the unthinkable while trying to solve one of history’s greatest seafaring mysteries in Explorer: Lost in the Arctic: what happened to the 129 men of Sir John Franklin’s 1845 expedition whose ships got trapped in the Arctic ice while the sailors were trying to be the first to navigate the Northwest Passage. “We know they all died,” Synnott says. “I’m curious what people do when it’s pure survival.” This need for answers has fueled multiple searchers from 1848 until the present day, and even inspired the horror novel The Terror, adapted in 2018 to launch an AMC anthology series. (Credit: National Geographic For Disney/Renan Ozturk) This suspenseful documentary chronicles the four-month quest of Synnott and a team of explorers who think answers will be found in Franklin’s tomb,...

Stephen King’s short story “The Children of the Corn” has been catnip to horror filmmakers for nearly fifty years. Originally published in the March 1977 issue of Penthouse, the tale of a quarreling couple who stumble onto a murderous cult of children in a Nebraska cornfield was included the following year in King’s first short story collection Night Shift and subsequently adapted into a 1984 feature film directed by Fritz Kiersch. Night Shift also contains the source material for King classics such as The Mangler, Sometimes They Come Back, Maximum Overdrive, and the upcoming The Boogeyman, but none of the collection’s other 19 stories have had the staying power of “Children of the Corn.” Perhaps due to its evocative title implying barbaric pagan rituals or the eerie juxtaposition between childlike innocence and brutal murder, the original film has spawned eight sequels and two remakes over the course of four decades.

For horror fans, the autumnal season is the time of year when we all get to be the belle of the ball. For a few weeks each year, our expertise in all things creepy and spooky is valued above all other film fanatics, and we're often tasked with providing as many film recommendations as possible for casual horror fans to cram into a month or two of viewing. Sure, there's bound to be requests for "the scariest movie ever," but as new crops of monster kids grow into their own year after year, there's an evergreen need for horror movies that adults can watch with their little ones.
Family-friendly horror movies are a great way to inaugurate younger viewers to one of the most prolific subgenres in all of cinema, as well as offer a safe outlet to begin processing negative emotions like fear, grief, sadness, and anxiety. It's a...

Stephen King films can be a mixed bag. For every really good film adaptation (Carrie; The Shining; Misery) there’s a bad one (Maximum Overdrive; Graveyard Shift; The Dark Tower). There are also a whole slew of Stephen King films that fall somewhere in the middle. I think Children of the Corn is one of the films that falls squarely in the middle of the pack.
There are some real strengths in the film. It has some genuine star quality, with soon-to-be action star Linda Hamilton (The Terminator) and TV heartthrob Peter Horton (Thirtysomething) starring as married couple Burt and Vicky, who become stranded in a town filled only with murderous, brainwashed children. The children are led by Isaac (John Franklin), who has a direct connection with an evil entity the children worship called He Who Walks Behind the Rows, and Malachai (Courtney Gains), Isaac’s mean-spirited enforcer.

Sometimes kids are the scariest part about a movie. Either the way they’re made to look or the manner in which they act can be off-putting enough to make them the scariest and most unnerving part of the film. But honestly you wouldn’t believe what a lot of them look like and are up to now. So here are just a few that you might recognize from their glory days. Trust me, a number of them look nothing like they did in the movies. John Franklin-Children of the Corn You remember Isaac right? He became a teacher until 2015 when

The film: When Isaac (John Franklin) returns with a group of other children from playing in the cornfields around the town of Gatlin, Nebraska, he leads a revolt that sees the adults slaughtered fast and mercilessly. The only two children who didn’t play in the corn that day, Job (Robby Kiger) and his sister Sarah (Anne Marie McEvoy) remain unhomicidal. Three years later, Vicky (Linda Hamilton) and boyfriend Burt (Peter Horton) are driving near Gatlin when a little boy stumbles in front of their car. He’s had his throat slit and in their quest to get help, the pair find themselves in the midst of Isaac’s not-so-merry band.

One of the most unwavering networks –beyond CBS- is The CW. The mini network and its stable of cult like genre shows have been able to sustain good ratings in the all-important 18-34 demographic, at times beating last place NBC. So far, for the 2012-13 TV season, they’ve only canceled one show, the medical drama Emily Owens, MD. Now, the network has announced early pick-ups of freshman superhero show Arrow, The Vampire Diaries (which is headed into season five, with a potential spin-off called The Originals may be added) and Supernatural –which heads into season nine, becoming the networks longest running show behind Smallville. Beauty and the Beast is also likely to be renewed as well. But other shows like 90210, Nakita, and The Carrie Diaries remain questionable network until the network heads can look over the upcoming pilots.

And a child shall eat them …
Children of the Corn, in my opinion, is a crapfest. The idea is awesome, a cult of kids who murder adults to make their corn crop grow, but the movie goes nowhere.
Despite it's lack of plot, the kids rule. They look like tiny, angry Mennonites, and they all have names that are back in style for Brooklyn toddlers. Malachi is the archetypal evil ginger -- yelling phrases that are half-biblical, half-fascist -– and is a dead ringer for that kid in your seventh grade homeroom who spent all his time thinking of ways to bomb the school.
“Outlander! Outlander! We have your woman!”
“Make sacrifice unto Him! Bring Him the blood of the outlanders!”
It’s even funnier when you take into account the actor’s real name is Courtney. Despite the fact that the first Children of the Corn sucked, seven more were made.

Child stars get a tough rap. With headline-grabbing trainwrecks like Lindsay Lohan and the kids from Differn't Strokes, it's not surprising that kids in the spotlight have a tough time of it. Some make it through without any major missteps; others shun the spotlight all together. We take a look at five horror kids - and where they are now. John Franklin - Isaac in Children of the Corn (1984) As Isaac in Children of the Corn, John Franklin (then in his 20s) played the leader of a cult of kids who believed that adults needed to be sacrificed to "He Who Walks Behind the Rows" in order to ensure a bountiful harvest. Just for the hell of it, and in the spirit of the Halloween season I came up with a list of 10 movie characters who I think are the most creepiest characters ever created in film. The list I've put together is in no particular order, but go through tell me what you think, and let me know if there are there any characters that you think should be added to it?
Kane - Julian Beck - Poltergeist II
I was actually just wanting Poltergeist II and it was seeing this character that actually gave me the idea of putting together this list. This guy is just scary as hell! The guy had a unique gift of scaring the shit out of people while walking down the street.
Willy Wonka - Gene Wilder - Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

If you were able to attend HorrorHound Weekend in Cincinnati this past November, then you might have noticed those awesome Children of the Corn shirts hanging behind the tables of Courtney Gains and John Franklin. And, if you were lucky, you might even have been able to snag yourself one of these popular pieces of Children of the Corn collectible apparel. If you were asking yourself all weekend, "Who did those cool shirts?", well the person behind those outstanding Cotc designs was artist and illustrator Ben Harley, owner and operator of The Screen Printing Factory. After many years as a screen printer, it was Ben's long interest in art and horror that led him to pursue a career following his passion for both. After majoring in illustration at the Columbus College of Art & Design, a career was needed that would allow him more freedom to give special care to his daughter.

One of the motivations for writer/director/producer Donald P. Borchers to do the Children Of The Corn remake that just aired on Syfy was to create an adaptation more faithful to Stephen King’s chilling short story than the one he produced back in 1984. But the movie’s DVD (coming October 6 from Anchor Bay) reveals another reason: This film is a Statement as well.
In an on-camera interview, Borchers proclaims that he wanted this interpretation of King’s tale of a youthful rural cult to be a parable about religious extremism and the current crisis in the Middle East. This is no doubt why the new Children (following a 1963-set prologue) takes place in 1975, so that protagonist Burt (David Anders) can be a Vietnam veteran, a key source of the tension between him and wife Vicky (Kandyse McClure) during their drive through the Nebraska farmlands. (The fact that they’re interracially married,...
