On Friday nights — and special occasions! — IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: God Gives His Toughest Battles to His Strongest Pickle Salesmen
The episodic anthology is, by definition, the biggest mixed bag of a genre you’ll ever find on television. For every early season of “Black Mirror” and “The Twilight Zone” there’s a “Romanoffs” and… well, the recent seasons of “Black Mirror.” By eschewing serialization and giving creators freedom to tell self-contained stories in each episode, you create opportunities for fascinating one-offs that wouldn’t fit into any other medium. But you’re also inevitably left...

Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.
From producer Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, the 1985 horror-comedy is directed by Luca Bercovici (Rockula) from a script he co-wrote with producer Jefery Levy. At just over 80 minutes, the film doesn’t waste time trying to make sense of its messy plot.
When Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) inherits an old manor from the father he never knew, he does what any 20-something with newfound freedom would do: throw a party. Something wills Jonathan to perform a ritual from an old book he finds among his father’s occult paraphernalia,...

It’s time for a new episode of our Best Horror Party Movies video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a movie that was widely considered to be a disappointment when it was first released back in 1996 – Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood (watch it Here). But while Bordello of Blood may be a step down from its predecessor, Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and it may pale in comparison to the similar From Dusk Till Dawn, which was released around the same time, it’s still a movie you can party to. And to find out how we party to Bordello of Blood, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Gilbert Adler, who wrote the screenplay with A.L. Katz (with Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis receiving story credit), Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood has the following synopsis: After her troublemaking brother,...

George A. Romero brought the world the first flesh-eating zombies in the 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead, then followed that up with Dawn of the Dead in 1978 and Day of the Dead in 1985. He was hoping to get another Dead movie made in the ’90s, but wasn’t able to get it into production until the next decade – resulting in the 2005 release Land of the Dead (watch it Here). And with the new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?, we’re digging into the story of the making of Romero’s long-awaited fourth Dead movie. Check it out in the embed above!
Written and directed by Romero, Land of the Dead had the following synopsis: In a world where zombies form the majority of the population, the remaining humans build a feudal society away from the undead. Ruthless Paul Kaufman rules and protects this microcosm but enforces painful class distinctions.

Stars: Peter Liapis, Lisa Pelikan, Michael Des Barres, Jack Nance, Mariska Hargitay, Scott Thomson, Ralph Seymour | Written by Luca Bercovici, Jefery Levy | Directed by Luca Bercovici

Stars: Damon Martin, Royal Dano, Phil Fondacaro, J. Downing, Kerry Remsen, Donnie Jeffcoat, Dale Wyatt | Written by Charlie Dolan, Dennis Paoli, Luca Bercovici | Directed by Albert Band
For my film-loving friends and I, Ghoulies and its immediate sequel were almost rites of passage growing up – I distinctly remember renting them from not only the local video shop but also that strange guy that used to park on the street corner renting tapes out of his boot (or, if he was more successful, the back of a transit van). You know the one, he’d have the craziest VHS tapes you’d ever seen – Class of Nuke Em High, Black Roses, The Toxic Avenger, Ghoulies… all films that sold themselves on artwork alone.

October 20th is yet another stellar week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases, all leading up to our favorite holiday: Halloween. One of my favorite films of all time, Ernest Dickerson’s Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, is finally making its way to HD via a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory. And as if that’s not enough, Scream is also busy with two more great releases this Tuesday as well—Bordello of Blood and The Larry Fessenden Collection.
Kino Lorber is reviving another cult classic on Tuesday too—The Oblong Box—which is based on the Edgar Allan Poe tale and co-stars two cinematic legends, Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. For those of you Back to the Future fans out there (and really, who isn’t?), Universal is giving the series a few special releases in time for the film’s 30th anniversary and,...

Next Tuesday, Scream Factory will offer horror fans several new options for Halloween movie marathons when The Larry Fessenden Collection and the Tales From the Crypt films Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood come out on respective Blu-rays. Ahead of their impending release date, we have clips and trailers from all three Blu-rays to give you a look at what's to come.
Demon Knight (Collector's Edition Blu-ray): "A mysterious drifter known as Brayker (William Sadler, Iron Man 3) possesses the last of seven ancient keys that hold the power to stop the forces of darkness and protect all humanity from ultimate evil. But the human race is safe only so long as Brayker can evade the demonic Collector (Billy Zane, Titanic) who has gathered the other six keys.
In his obsessive quest for the key, the Collector rallies an army of ghastly cadavers against Brayker and the inhabitants of a run-down hotel.

I’ll be honest, The Creeps originally came at a time when, beyond the Puppet Master movies, I had grown tired of Full Moon’s schtick… Having moved the studio to Romania, their production values were falling, casting choices were resulting in some truly wooden performances and worst of all their films were getting more and more ridiculous, with gimmicks replacing decent stories. Case in part, The Creeps.
Released in 1997, The Creeps – at least on paper – sounds utterly ridiculous, even for a Full Moon flick, and it’s easy to see why I avoided it for so long. The film is essentially a redux of the “mad scientist” story we’ve seen a million times before – itself a movie archetype as much as the classic monsters who are the heroes of...

We were nearly laughed off the planet for telling you guys about the Troll remake. Everyone around me kept telling us it wasn't happening, but our sources swore up and down that John Carl Buechler was gearing up to remake his own film. Over at E! they reported that Lindsay Lohan's sister, Ali, auditioned for a role and is looking to star in the film alongside the previously announced Noah Hathaway and Phil Fondacaro. "She was great," Buechler tells Mark Malkin in his blog. "The camera loves her. She's a really good actress...I am personally going to fight for her." The film is about a young boy enters a parallel world of wizards and magic where he befriends a good witch. Soon the boy learns that he must save the world from an evil Troll/Wizard that has the ability to hide his essence within the bodies of others.

We've ben breaking numerous stories over the past few months about John C. Buechler remaking Troll, only everyone keeps screaming in my ear that it's all a load of Bs. Well, if it's Bs someone explain to me why an official casting call has been made for the remake with claims to begin shooting in Vancouver, Canada; Torino, Italy and China June 30? I guess if this is for real, we'll know soon enough! Noah Hathaway and Phil Fondacaro are both said to be already cast. After his family moves to a mysterious apartment building in San Francisco, young Harry Potter Jr. (no joke) learns that his new home is a portal to a magical land, and discovers that his little sister's body is being impersonated by a sinister Troll, and that he has a great magical power, which he must use to save the world from the villainous, malignant Troll.
