Ferrari has bypassed theaters and will be racing out online only in Germany.
Amazon, which picked up rights in Germany and Austria for Michael Mann’s race car biopic, will release the Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz starrer directly online. The film, which premiered in Venice last year and was released theatrically in the U.S. by Neon, will bow on Amazon’s Prime Video service in the two territories on March 1. Amazon took the same track in France, where Ferrari will go out on exclusively on Amazon Prime on March 8. Ferrari was pre-sold to Amazon in the territories (as well in India and the Nordic territories). The producers of the film noted that after the Amazon deal was done there were no plans to release the movie theatrically in those territories.

Over the first half of “Tokyo Vice” Season 2, Ken Watanabe’s harried detective looks, to put it mildly, like absolute dogshit. Puffy bags threaten to swallow his eyes. Peppered stubble creeps across his chin and cheeks. Watch closely and you’ll swear you can see his hair falling out, one withered strand at a time. While likely frowned upon by his superiors, Detective Hiroto Katagiri’s shabby appearance is justified. At work, he’s been relegated to demeaning desk duty, promising clueless citizens he’ll find out where the yakuza has taken their cat. At home, he’s been living alone for months, smoking silently in an empty bed, gazing out into the darkness for any signs of danger — and danger is out there. His family is in hiding because, when not busy catnapping, the yakuza is threatening to kill them. If they feel Katagiri snooping around in their business,...

Penélope Cruz reminded fans of her timeless beauty as she stepped on the red carpet for the Ferrari photocall in Madrid, Spain, on February 5. The Spanish star has served as an ambassador for Chanel since 2018, so supporting the French fashion house wasn’t surprising. However, her Chanel outfit choice was.

Now that the Oscar nominations are official, catch-up time begins in earnest. But if you’ve already seen everything on Oscar voters honored, a worthwhile also-ran is hitting digital platforms this week.
The contender to watch this week: “Ferrari“
MIchael Mann‘s biopic about car mogul Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) never got the awards-season fuel it needed to make the nomination roster. The movie’s roaring engines missed out on the Best Sound nod that many pundits expected, and Penélope Cruz, who plays Ferrari’s wronged wife, couldn’t nab the Best Supporting Actress recognition she deserved. (Cruz fared better with the Screen Actors Guild Awards.) The film did, however, make the National Board of Review’s list of the year’s 10 best, and now you can rent or purchase it for a premium rate on VOD.

Just one month after it made its debut in theaters nationwide, Michael Mann's biographical sports drama "Ferrari" is making its way to streaming platforms, with a DVD and Blu-ray release to follow later this year. Hence, they have decided to use a combination of Red Komodo and a prototype version of the Sony Venice 2 Rialto 2 Extension System, to deliver these fast-epic shots from the racing tracks straight to the big screen.

Starting with 1981’s Thief — the opening moments of which feature James Caan’s tough guy ex-con Frank driving a Cadillac Eldorado through the rain-soaked Chicago streets at night — cars have always played an indelible role in Michael Mann’s films, establishing the tone and acting as framing devices for his characters and a way into their psyche.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mann spoke about the prominent role that cars have played in his movies over his four-decade career. The reason? “It’s not cars because I like cars,” he notes. It’s about adding a certain subtext to a character’s motivation and Mann’s influence — the way he literally changed the visual poetics of cars on film — dates back to Thief, his first feature.

What do you do when you need more than half a dozen classic 1950s-era Ferrari and Maserati race cars to make a film, but the originals today would sell at auction for $30 million or $40 million each? If you’re Ferrari director Michael Mann, you build them from scratch, of course, with historically faithful details to make even the most strident car lover grin with approval.
The film, which stars Adam Driver as Ferrari founder and racer Enzo Ferrari, re-creates the 1957 Mille Miglia, the famous 1,000-kilometer Italian road race that ran from Brescia, through the Futa Pass, onto Rome and back to Brescia.
The production design of Ferrari was exacting: Everything was scrupulously studied, detailed and, eventually, reproduced for the film — from the signage on the Mille Miglia starting ramp in Brescia to the wheel lugs of a Ferrari 801 F1 car, on down to pasta company Buitoni’s logo on the...

Penélope Cruz has no plans at the moment to slip into spandex and a cape, but the Oscar winner says she’d love to do a superhero movie. “If it’s something interesting, why not? It’s fun,” Cruz told me Friday at Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch brunch at the Parker Palm Springs. “As you could imagine, that’s what my kids ask me sometimes, ‘Are you ever going to do that, mom?’ Because I’ve done so much drama and so many films I can’t show to them yet.”
Cruz said she has had “conversations here and there” about appearing in a superhero movie, “but nothing specific that will happen soon.”
What is probably happening soon is a musical movie. Cruz teased that she’s probably going to start filming a musical any day now. “I’m going to do one soon, I think,” she said. “I...

The Ferrari director has confirmed that Heat 2 is definitely on the way and production is set to begin in 2024.
Heat is, without a question, Michael Mann’s best, most acclaimed film. Featuring powerhouse performances from Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, it’s a timeless classic of crime cinema. Mann has long been planning a sequel for the film, and there has been much speculation about whether one will ever materialise – and if so, when.
In 2022, Mann announced Heat 2 as a novel and in 2023, we finally got confirmation that a film was also on the way. The novel takes place one day after the events of the original film, but events also flash back and forward, spanning several years.

Legendary filmmaker Michael Mann is “worried about the future” of movies. But, he also declares, “Cinema is not dying.” A luminary auteur with a distinctive visual style and gripping storytelling, Mann calls this time following the end of the historic Hollywood strikes “a real watershed moment.”

There isn’t a ‘Lew Wasserman’ figure now. There needs to be because this isn’t the end. These issues come up every time there’s a new modality. It always precipitates this.”

The Christmas and New Year's box office capped off 2023 with a hefty unexpected bounty. Despite not having a single outright mega-blockbuster hit like "Spider-Man: No Way Home" or "Avatar: The Way of Water" like 2021 and 2022 had, the overall final frame of the year was big enough to push the final domestic tally for the year past the $9 billion mark. A unique aspect of the most recent week was that we had a slew of movies -- "Wonka," "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," "The Color Purple," and "Migration," among others -- carrying the load. The love was spread around, which was very nice to see. Unfortunately, that love did not extend to Michael Mann's "Ferrari," which now finds itself in a precarious situation financially.
Released in theaters on Christmas Day, Mann's first movie since 2015's "Blackhat" did not find much of an audience. The film, a biopic about legendary car-maker...

Adam Driver is opening up about his career and how he has not been strategic in booking his role and instead going by instinct to work with great filmmakers.
The actor made an appearance on the SmartLess podcast, which is hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, where the topic of playing Italian men in two movies back to back came up. Driver plays the role of Maurizio Gucci in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci and Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s Ferrari.
Ahead of the press tour for Ferrari, Driver was warned that he would be inevitably asked about playing Italians successively.

Michael Mann is back with his new film Ferrari after a hiatus of 8 years. Having closely followed his filmography for years, Michael Mann is one of those directors who has constantly innovated himself and pushed the envelopes of traditional story-telling coupled with the use of new movie technologies. He was one of the first to accept that movies will move to being shot in digital format versus on film at a time when Hollywood was at crossroads whether to accept but he accepted it pretty quickly and moved on. So, my expectations for Ferrari was high and I ended up being quite disappointed. On the surface, Ferrari appears to be a well-made, well-acted and with excellent racing sequences. However, throughout the film, I couldn’t help but feel disinterested and dissatisfied. There was a sense of laziness in terms of making some scenes more exciting to watch. This film had...

Adam Driver is tired of defending his recent roles.
In the last two years, the 40-year-old Oscar-nominated actor has played two famous Italian figures – first playing Maurizio Gucci in 2021′s House of Gucci then playing Enzo Ferrari in 2023′s Ferrari.
While speaking with Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes on their Smartless podcast, Adam hit back at constantly being asked if the roles should have gone to real Italian actors.

Adam Driver is steering clear of journalists asking why he played back-to-back Italian icons.
The actor, who previously starred as Maurizio Gucci in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” and recently led Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” as Enzo Ferrari, said during the “Smartless” podcast (via The Wrap) that while playing two Italian characters consecutively wasn’t “strategic,” that’s how it “worked out.”
“So many people have been like, ‘How many Italians?’ I’m like, it’s just kind of worked out that way,” Driver said, noting that perhaps someone on his PR team should have warned him it would “come up a lot” on the press tour for “Ferrari,” but “press isn’t a place where you have a nuanced conversation.”
Driver added that his casting was a “good example of not being strategic in a way that I probably should,” but working with director Mann was impossible to pass up.

This time, the acclaimed filmmaker is bringing a long-gestating passion project to the big screen in the form of "Ferrari," a biopic about famed car maker Enzo Ferrari, played by Adam Driver. Specifically, it chronicles a very tumultuous period for the historical figure that takes place in the summer of 1957. “The Color Purple,” a vibrant adaptation of the book-turned-beloved-movie-turned-hit-Broadway-musical, dominated at the box office on Christmas Day.
The film has outperformed expectations with $18 million from 3,152 North American theaters. It’s the largest Christmas Day opening for a film since 2009, and the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time.
Those ticket sales were enough to lead the way on Monday ahead of two other newcomers, Neon’s racing drama “Ferrari” and director George Clooney’s inspirational sports story “The Boys in the Boat.” Warner Bros. impressively held the top three spots on domestic charts as “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” and “Wonka” swam to second and third place, respectively.
Boosted by positive reviews and a glowing “A” CinemaScore, “The Color Purple” marks the first musical in some time that’s resonated at the box office. The film, backed by Warner Bros. and directed by Blitz Bazawule, collected more in a single...

Throughout his 40-plus year career, filmmaker Michael Mann has accumulated and proliferated many colorful phrases and bite-sized poetic philosophy. One of his most favored is the phrase "time is luck." The sentiment refers to how every second one can breathe — to ambulate and interact with the world around them, to manipulate and change it and, in turn, be changed by it — is an opportunity and a blessing.
Mann's personal and professional philosophies were heavily influenced by his time researching and befriending men who operated on both sides of the law, and he found that law enforcement officers as well as lifelong criminals tend to have an innate sense of a ticking clock in their lives. While the bulk of Mann's filmography deals with cops, criminals, and crime, there are several notable outliers — "The Keep," "The Last of the Mohicans," "The Insider," and especially "Ali" — that point the way to his...

Plot: On the verge of bankruptcy, Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) enters his racing team in the 1957 Mille Miglia.
Review: Ferrari is the only movie to come out this year that can say it sports a screenplay credit by a writer who’s been dead for fourteen years. Indeed, director Michael Mann has been trying to get his Ferrari movie off the ground for at least the last twenty years. He came close about eight years ago, with Christian Bale set to lead what would have been a big-budget version of the story. But, in the years since, the industry has changed, with Mann having to contend with a leaner budget to make his long-held passion project. Rather than compromise his vision, the potentially reduced scope helps make this one of his most intimate and involving films, harkening back to the days of The Insider.
Adam Driver is well-cast as Enzo Ferrari.

And what’s that zooming toward the multiplex? Why, it’s yet another true-life sports film, and it’s comin’ in hot. Yes, it’s a whole lot faster than the rowing movie, as it is set in the world of auto racing. And unlike the other racing flick this year, Gran Turismo, there’s no video gaming involved as the bulk of it takes place over sixty-five years ago. Oh, and the director of this new film has been making some of the most interesting and stylish action epics over the last five decades. He’s focused on one year in a man’s life synonymous with the sport, so it could be considered a biography. Even after all this time that name resonates throughout the world in general. Sure it’s now a brand name, but behind all the iconic autos was the man named Enzo Ferrari.

The specialty box office saw several films try to carve out a niche for themselves during the holiday weekend, including Searchlight’s “All of Us Strangers,” Andrew Haigh’s dreamlike LGBTQ romance that earned $132,156 from four theaters in New York and Los Angeles.
That gives the film an average of just over $33,000, consistent with limited release opening averages for films like MGM’s “American Fiction” and A24’s “The Zone of Interest”.
Premiering at Telluride, “All of Us Strangers” is a ghost story that tells the tale of a gay, struggling screenwriter named Adam who falls in love with the one other resident of his apartment building after initially rejecting him. As their relationship builds, Adam also visits the ghosts of his parents, who died in a car crash when he was 12. Along with critical acclaim, audiences in New York and Los Angeles have given the film strong marks with an A- on CinemaScore.

Michael Mann is one of the top directors in Hollywood, long used to calling his own shots. When Joe Roth was running Disney Motion Pictures, he asked Mann if his “60 Minutes” expose “The Insider” with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino (1999) would make money. “Probably not,” Mann said. Roth made it anyway. It wasn’t a hit ($60 million worldwide), but it scored seven Oscar nominations, including Picture, Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay. Like many of Mann’s movies, it also gained stature over time.
But for all of Mann’s classic films, there are as many movies that didn’t get made in his oeuvre. It takes a lot for him to decide that he should expend the time and energy to go forward with a project, partly because his standards of performance are so high. For example, after directing four movies with high degrees of difficulty in a row Mann...

For the better part of 20 years, director Michael Mann has wanted to tell the Enzo Ferrari story. He was even briefly attached to direct the 2019 movie Ford v Ferrari that was eventually helmed by James Mangold (although Mann still retained an Executive Producer credit). Now, he’s finally getting to tell his Ferrari story with the simply titled Ferrari.
Ferrari stars Adam Driver as ex-racecar driver and automobile industry mogul Enzo Ferrari. Enzo’s company is on the verge of collapse, so he decides the best way to save it is to win the ill-fated 1957 Mille Miglia, a treacherous 1000-mile race across the roads of Italy.
Along with attempting to salvage his crumbling empire, Enzo also has to balance a wife who is grieving from the loss of their son (Penélope Cruz from Parallel Mothers) and a mistress with whom...

Ferrari Movie Review is Out! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
What’s Good: The cast races are exciting and brutal, and going behind the scenes of the Ferrari business is quite interesting.
What’s Bad: The non-Italian actors feel out of place, especially regarding their fake accents, which sadly hurt their performances.
Loo Break: The movie’s start is chaotic and all over the place, so you could go to the loo during it and not miss much.
Watch or Not?: Watch if you are in for the car races or are a Ferrari fan; if not, there are better options.
Language: English (with subtitles).
Available On: Cinemas
Runtime: 130 Minutes.

“Ferrari” director Michael Mann sees similarities between Enzo Ferrari and Adam Driver, the actor playing him in their new film.
Hitting theaters Christmas Day, “Ferrari” focuses on a pivotal time in the Ferrari founder’s life – his marriage to wife Laura (Penélope Cruz) is deteriorating and she is unaware of the other family he has with girlfriend Lina (Shailene Woodley). At the same time, his company is on the verge of bankruptcy. It’s all set against the backdrop of the 1957 Mille Miglia, a tragic event in racing history.
In this exclusive featurette, Driver says he can relate to Ferrari’s mindset: “Enzo’s relentlessness and ambition and myopic focus, I completely understand.”

A lot of directors make great movies — but Michael Mann creates great experiences, films that give the audience an almost tactile sense of what his characters are feeling and thinking down to the smallest perceptible detail. In his debut feature “Thief” he took the viewer through every aspect of safecracking, from the tools and the process to the precise cocktail of emotions the title character felt in both moments of success and catastrophic failure. In “Manhunter,” Mann found visual and aural corollaries for the experience of an FBI profiler putting himself in the mindset of a serial killer, persuading the viewer to link their perspective to that of the profiler in the same way the profiler was linking his to his subject. Mann’s greatest film, “Heat,” takes the raw materials of a cops-and-robbers action flick and approaches them so realistically that it takes three hours to cover all the...

It is almost like a Shakespearean drama with a lot of cool action,” says two-time Oscar-winning film editor Pietro Scalia of Michael Mann’s new Ferrari, which is based on the biography Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine and explores the life of the eponymous automaker (played by Adam Driver) as he struggles personally and professionally in 1957.
In his first pairing with the director, Scalia — who won his Oscars for JFK (shared with Joe Hutshing) and Black Hawk Down — emphasizes that while thrilling race scenes were created, Mann’s focus was first on character and key relationships, like those between Enzo and Laura (Enzo’s wife, portrayed by Penélope Cruz) and Enzo and Lena (his lover, portrayed by Shailene Woodley). “I remember that he loved to see the contrast between how Driver would play his character in front of Laura or with his mother or with Lena,...

Based on Brock Yates' book "Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine," Michael Mann's new biopic "Ferrari" follows the famous Italian car maker through a significant four-month portion of his life wherein his wife Laura (Penélope Cruz) learns about a secret mistress (Shailene Woodley) and son that he had been hiding for years. His company is also on the brink of bankruptcy and a Ferrari vehicle will have to win the 1957 Mille Miglia, a notable Italian car race, to put the company back on the map. In Mann's usual style, "Ferrari" is terse and distant, and the title character, played by Adam Driver, comes across as aloof and robotic; it's hard to imagine this man being passionate enough to maintain one marriage, let alone an entire secret secondary family.

Many of the most memorable moments of my life have revolved around cinema. (Let’s not debate whether that is a good thing.) And 2023 was no exception. There was a twentieth-anniversary screening of the mesmerizing Mulholland Drive at Buffalo’s North Park Theatre featuring a performance from the remarkable Rebekah Del Rio. That was a biggie, but many of my most indelible 2023 cinema memories include my children. In July, my wife and our two kiddos had a rare group cinema outing to Barbie on its opening day, and I have rarely seen my then-eight-year-old daughter more genuinely excited to dance the night away. Ava DuVernay and Michael Mann go way back. In 2003, DuVernay was a publicist on the set of Mann’s “Collateral.” Watching the auteur shoot in her old stomping grounds of East Los Angeles gave her the idea to pick up the camera. “That made me think, ‘Wow, this is possible,’” recalls DuVernay, sitting opposite the Oscar-nominated Mann to discuss where their careers have taken them in the 20 years since.
Now, DuVernay, an Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker, tackles her most complex story yet with “Origin,” a sprawling yet intimate adaptation of Isabel Wilkerson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.” The biographical drama follows Wilkerson (portrayed by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) as she writes her book at the same time that she grapples with her grief over a series of deaths. Meanwhile, after three decades, Mann accomplished his dream of bringing race car magnate Enzo Ferrari’s story to the big screen.

From his John Dillinger film “Public Enemies” to his long awaited racing drama “Ferrari,” Michael Mann is no stranger to making films about prominent historical figures. But the director has no interest in conventional biopics that document a subject’s entire life.
While discussing his decades-spanning quest to make “Ferrari” with The Guardian, Mann explained that he never considered directing a film about Enzo Ferrari’s overarching life story. Instead, his film follows a 59-year-old Ferrari (Adam Driver) as he attempts to salvage his racing empire as his personal life crumbles around him.
“I wouldn’t have been interested in some lengthy biopic,” Mann said. “Those are documentaries that belong on the History Channel. They never work. And within this four-month period, all the dynamic forces of Enzo’s life are compacted and in collision.”

Adam Driver found it "easy" to work with Penelope Cruz and Shailene Woodley. The 40-year-old actor can next be seen as Enzo Ferrari in 'Ferrari', while the Spanish star plays his wife Laura Ferrari and the 'Big Little Lies' actress appears as his mistress, Lina Lardi, and Adam insisted they didn't need to do much to prepare because his co-stars are such "really great actors".Asked how he approached bonding with the women, he told 'Entertainment Tonight': "Leading up to it, it wasn't something we talked about."I've felt that when you're working with really great actors there's not a lot of ... there's kind of a shorthand that immediately kind of happens. There's immediate respect and they're both actors who are very present, and they're not anywhere else. "They're right there with you, so in a way it's easy. The event was held at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental.
As longtime ambassadors for Chanel, both Cruz and Stewart donned outfits from the renowned French fashion house. Cruz wore a white tweed mini dress adorned with a scalloped collar and silver buttons. Stewart arrived in a tank top with floral and sequin embroidery and high-waisted tweed pants with a multi-colored pinstripe pattern.
