The classic Kaiju movie formula may have been invented in America with flicks like King Kong and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, but at this point everyone’s aware that Japan is the one that perfected the genre. From Godzilla to Gamera, Japanese filmmakers have made these giant creature features part of their national identity, so it stands to reason that the west can’t quite keep up when it comes to traditional Kaiju movies.
Sure, we’re lucky enough to be living through a Kaiju renaissance with Legendary’s Monsterverse and the occasional dark horse like Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, but it’s really difficult for western cinema to capture the cheesy chaos of giant monsters wreaking havoc in densely populated urban environments. Thankfully, there are exceptions to this rule, and I’d argue that there’s one recent blockbuster that actually managed to reach the heights of...

With Barbie blowing up the box office bigger than Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the world-famous Mattel toy company is ready to push the button on launching a Mattel Cinematic Universe. Barbie’s success is a golden ticket for Mattel. The Greta-Gerwig-directed comedy, powered by feminism and the color pink, gives Mattel the confidence it needs to bring 14 of its iconic toy properties to the silver screen. While some may roll their eyes at the thought of a Magic 8 Ball or Polly Pocket movie, remember that Barbie is radically different than anything we could have anticipated. If Mattel applies that level of care and risk with its other properties, moviegoers could be in for something unique and entertaining.
While Gerwig says she’s putting Barbie back in the box to focus on other prospects, Mattel is open to making sequels for the blonde bombshell and her eclectic group of friends.

After pitting a knife-wielding Jennifer Lopez and a submachine gun-armed Jennifer Coolidge against a pack of wedding-crashing pirates in the rom-com/action mashup "Shotgun Wedding" (you can read our review of the film here), Prime Video is slowing things down a little in February. That month will see the release of the second and final season of the streamer's fantasy neo-noir series "Carnival Row," which is dropping nearly three and a half years after the first season launched in August 2019, in case you find yourself wondering (much like /Film's Valerie Ettenhofer), "Wait, so I didn't imagine the show where Orlando Bloom solves crimes and hooks up with pixie Cara Delevingne?" No, no you did not, but hey, at least now it has a proper ending!
In the absence of too many major new releases beyond that, Prime Video and Freevee viewers might want to spend February catching one of the...

Despite a poor script that makes the film too predictable, Beast offers up enough lion thrills to keep you entertained for the 90-minute run time.
Idris Elba plays Nate, a father who’s on a trip to Africa with his two teenage daughters. Things soon take a frighting turn for the family when they find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion. The film really shines once it gets into the lion attack. Director Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns) uses some creative camera work and the film flourishes with multiple brilliant tracking shots. Once the action hits you get lost in the moment and it leads to some edge-of-your-seat set pieces. Kormákur does a wonderful job of building the tension and making the lion as...

Idris Elba fights a lion. This is what Beast promises, and this is what Beast delivers. No more. No less. The purity of it — the bald-faced simplicity! — is sort of beautiful.
This is where we are in the cursed summer of 2022. We quaver with existential ennui as the planet tries to throw us off with pandemics, heatwaves, wildfires, landslides, dust storms, droughts and floods. But we can cheer in a whistling-past-the-graveyard way as Idris Elba punches a prodigious pissed-off pussycat in the, well, puss, as if to say, “Not today, Mother Nature! Not today!”
To be fair to the lion, he is absolutely correct to be pissed off: poachers killed his whole family, and tried to kill him too, so he is out for revenge. All homo sapiens are in his sights. You may want to root for the lion instead. We humans are only getting what we deserve.

A few days ago, it was announced that the new Halloween movie, Halloween Ends, will be given a theatrical and Peacock streaming release on October 14th. Following that announcement, a press release was sent out to let subscribers know what else they can expect to see on Peacock this Halloween season – and among the movies that will be added to the service at that time is the survival thriller Beast, which just reached theatres last weekend!
Here’s what the press release had to say:
Peacock’s Halloween Horror destination will feature more thrilling film arrivals leading into Halloween including new movies The Black Phone and Beast coming straight from theaters along with other horror films streaming on Peacock including original film They/Them from Blumhouse along with You Should Have Left, Separation from director William Brent, and some of the most iconic horror franchises of all time including Chucky, Saw,...

Dir: Baltasar Kormákur. Starring: Idris Elba, Iyana Halley, Leah Sava Jeffries, Sharlto Copley. 15, 93 minutes.
A shot of Idris Elba socking a lion in the face isn’t just the dramatic denouement of Beast – it’s the film’s entire raison d’etre. No one’s here for the scenes of Elba’s well-intentioned patriarch attempting to heal his fractured family, or the vague sentiments about nature’s karmic vengeance. Audiences will turn up because a trailer promised to show them one of our most charismatic A-listers in a boxing match with a roided-out kitty cat. Everything that comes before is just the warm-up for the main event.
In that sense, it’s impossible to argue that Beast doesn’t live up to its promise, because the only promise was another piece of recyclable pop-culture imagery. Beast is the latest entry in the man vs arbitrary animal Hall of Fame, filed...

Over the weekend, Universal’s creature feature Beast gobbled up 11.5 million at the domestic box office, but when will you be able to watch Idris Elba fight a lion at home?
Peacock sent out a press release teasing their upcoming arrivals for Halloween – including Halloween Ends on October 14! – and it’s worth noting that Beast is included in that list.

Pitting Idris Elba up against a bloodthirsty lion, Beast was released alongside Orphan: First Kill in theaters this past weekend, finishing in the #2 spot on the domestic box office charts.
From 3,743 theaters here in the United States, Beast roared its way to an 11,570,000 opening weekend, with the film’s current worldwide total now sitting at 21,852,000.
The downside for Universal Pictures on this one is that the production budget for Beast was a reported 36 million, meaning the film still has a long way to go to break even.
Beast will have to hit roughly 100 million to start being profitable in theaters, once you factor in the marketing spend and the cut of the profits that theaters will be given.
No word yet on an at-home release. Stay tuned.

Bloody Disgusting’s Beast review is spoiler-free.
Much like 1977’s Orca, Beast begins with a cruel inciting event that births an unrelenting force of revenge that unleashes its wrath upon all those who cross its path. In this case, a lion prowling the African bush after poachers ruthlessly slaughtered its entire pride. The Orca-like setup instantly sways allegiances in the lion’s favor and follows a straightforward formula, but the care put into its characters and propulsive thrills keep you engaged.
Dr. Nate Samuels (Idris Elba) brings his two daughters, Mere (Iyana Halley) and Norah (Leah Sava Jeffries), to South Africa to visit their late mother’s childhood home. More than just a means of feeling closer to mom after her death, it’s a chance for Nate to reconnect with his daughters. Older daughter Mere harbors feelings of abandonment by dad, while sensitive Norah wants to maintain the peace.

“It’s the law of the jungle,” one character says fairly early on in Beast — “early” as in after we’ve established that a lion decides to become a four-legged vigilante once some poachers slaughter his pride, but before this one-cat army sets his sights on our hero and his family. The way the man inhales and pauses before he delivers the next line suggests he’s about to drop some serious science: “The only law that matters here.” Ah. Ok!
To be fair, there are other laws that also apply to this survivalist thriller.

In an age where most movies without franchise potential are relegated to streaming, it’s refreshing to see Beast receive a theatrical release. Director Baltasar Kormȧkur delivers a lean adventure that plays well on a big screen with an engaged audience. It’s not quite Jaws with claws, but it’s a fun creature feature nonetheless.
Idris Elba stars as Nate Samuels, a widowed doctor who takes his daughters Norah and Mer on vacation to Africa to catch up with old friend Martin (Sharlto Copley). But a tour into the wild puts them at the mercy of a rogue lion that’s been spooked by poachers and is eager to defend its turf against human threats.
At just over 90 minutes, Beast is admirably focused without feeling rushed. Ryan Engle’s screenplay hints at the threat in its opening sequence, sets up the requisite family tensions, and peppers the story liberally...

Plot: After his ex-wife dies, a father (Idris Elba) takes his two daughters (Iyana Halley & Leah Sava Jeffries) to South Africa to stay with his best friend, a wildlife biologist (Sharlto Copley). While visiting a remote reserve, the group is attacked by a ferocious lion, who’s on the warpath after vicious poachers massacred his pride.
Review: Beast is a highly effective little thriller. While some may bristle at the idea of yet another “animal gone rogue” movie, under the eye of director Baltasar Kormákur and producer Will Packer, Beast makes the distinction that there’s no such thing as an “evil” animal. Instead, the lion hunting our heroes has been traumatized by the movie’s true villains, poachers, who massacred his pride to sell them off as trophies. No, this lion is simply butchering any human it crosses paths with, as it can’t distinguish between good and bad guys.

No animals were harmed in the making of “Beast.” Frankly, it doesn’t look like any animals were even used in the making of “Beast,” but if you can get past the idea that the two-ton lion threatening Idris Elba and his family in the movie is a singularly frightening combination of ones and zeros, not killer instinct and claws, then “Beast” is a blast.
A white-knuckle “When Animals Attack!” movie in the tradition of “Jaws” and “Anaconda,” this big-budget, big-screen release features A-list actors — Ok, actor, singular — and a director who knows what he’s doing: Icelandic ace Baltasar Kormákur, who cut his teeth on such nightmare-inducing man-against-nature films as “Everest” and “Adrift.” Here, the threat is a very big, very angry African cat, understandably agitated after a group of poachers slaughtered his pride, that has decided to kill every human that crosses his path. There is an almost elegant, simplistic beauty in the existence of the new film "Beast," which is about as close to peak late-summer-movie as you're going to find in the year 2022. Here is something that gives you exactly what you would expect when you hear that it is a movie in which Idris Elba fights a lion with his bare hands. If that premise sounds inherently ridiculous, that's because it is inherently ridiculous. No matter the context for why Elba fights a lion or what the outcome is, you can only take a movie so seriously when its climactic moments feature such a cartoonish battle. "Beast," to its credit, does not have grander aims in mind, with its mild ambitions as straightforward as possible. "Beast" is not a great film, but it is exactly as silly as the logline implies, or as much as you might hope.

In a multiplex mad for the multiverse and fanatical for franchises, never forget the simple pleasures of a self-contained, high-concept pitch: Idris Elba fights a lion. There, screenwriter Ryan Engle found one. He did it. It’s brilliant. And yet, for all of Engle’s inspired ideas on what a big-budget studio movie can be, he made one fatal mistake when building “Beast”:
That’s no diss on Elba, who remains one of our most charismatic and eminently watchable movie stars. Nor is it a ding against the two talented young actresses (Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries) who play his daughters. Hell, it’s not even a mark against director Baltasar Kormákur’s vision, which is often at its most compelling when the action-centric filmmaker dips his toes into horror territory. It all goes back to the genius idea to pit Elba against a big cat, which Engle kicks...

It’s been six long years since Idris Elba embarked on what we can only now call his “Bad Cat Trilogy.”
He ruled the jungle as the villainous Shere Khan in “The Jungle Book,” and he broke every human law as Macavity in “Cats.” But this time it’s different: In Baltasar Kormákur’s “Beast,” Elba must fight an evil cat in his own human form. It might feel like poetry if “Beast” was anything more than a competent genre exercise.
Elba stars as Dr. Nate Samuels, a doctor visiting South Africa with his two daughters, Meredith and Nora. They’re visiting the home town of Meredith and Nora’s mother who, shortly after she separated from Nate, was diagnosed with – and swiftly died of – cancer.
That’s a lot of baggage for one trip, but Nate is trying to make up for lost time by bonding over this new adventure.

Didn’t we stop attributing human characteristics like an insatiable desire for vengeance to animals back in the late-‘80s, when Jaws: The Revenge laughably informed us, “This time it’s personal?” Apparently not. Idris Elba is undeniably the star of Will Packer’s latest movie, “Beast,” but the family story at the heart of Universal’s release was a big draw for the producer who previously shepherded “Girls Trip.” In the movie, debuting in theaters Aug. 19, Elba plays Nate Samuels, a recently widowed doctor who returns to South Africa with his two teenage daughters (Iyana Halley and Leah Sava Jeffries) and must fight to survive from a man-hunting lion.

Idris Elba is teasing his potential return as the DC Comics assassin Bloodshot.
“I would definitely like to tell the Superman story. There’s no doubt,” Elba tells Variety. “Bloodsport versus Superman. It needs to happen.”
The actor was referencing how Bloodsport was sent to prison for putting Superman in the ICU with a kryptonite bullet, a key element of his character’s backstory that’s alluded to in “The Suicide Squad.”
Bloodsport was one of the few remaining members of Task Force X that survived the battle against Starro in “The Suicide Squad.” While the film ended with Bloodsport blackmailing Amanda Waller into setting his team free, the assassin’s current whereabouts in the DC cinematic universe remains to be seen.
Variety caught up with Elba at the New York premiere of his new movie “Beast,” which sees the actor face off against a deadly lion.
