Keith LeBlanc, a drummer on several early hip-hop releases and a key producer on albums by Nine Inch Nails and more, has passed away at the age of 70.
The sad news was reported by his record label On-u Sound, with no cause of death revealed.
LeBlanc helped pioneer the early hip-hop sound as a drummer in the Sugarhill House Band alongside bassist Doug Wimbish (Living Colour) and guitarist Skip “Little Axe” McDonald. The three musicians went on to form the industrial hip-hop group Tackhead, who released four albums from 1987 to 2014.
As a producer and mixer, LeBlanc worked with a number of prominent artists, including Nine Inch Nails, Living Colour, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, and Ministry.
He was a major contributor to Nin’s debut album, Pretty Hate Machine, co-producing standout tracks “Head Like a Hole” and “Down in It,” and engineering or mixing several other songs on the LP.

Depeche Mode were back on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Tuesday night for its Halloween episode, performing “My Favourite Stranger.”
Like “Wagging Tongue” — which Depeche Mode performed on Fallon last Friday — “My Favourite Stranger” comes from the synth-pop icons’ most recent album Memento Mori. No obvious Halloween costumes were worn during the performance, but the song’s eerie melodies and foreboding subject matter suited the occasion regardless. Watch Depeche Mode perform “My Favourite Stranger” on Fallon below.
Over the weekend, Depeche Mode headlined a show at Madison Square Garden as part of their extensive “Memento Mori Tour.” Their North American leg runs through the middle of December, after which the band will tour the UK and Europe throughout early 2024. Learn how to get tickets here.

Depeche Mode completed the late-night trifecta Friday as the band appeared on The Tonight Show to perform their Memento Mori track “Wagging Tongue.”
Since announcing their latest album just over a year ago, Depeche Mode first played then-new single “Ghosts Again” on The Late Show in February, and then played that song again on Jimmy Kimmel Live in March. On Friday, a night before their Madison Square Garden gig in New York, Depeche Mode finished out the 11 p.m.-hour circuit with a visit to Jimmy Fallon’s show.

Flashing back to 2013, Chvrches has dusted off the previously unreleased song “Talking in My Sleep” in anticipation of their debut album’s tenth anniversary. The Bones of What You Believe will receive an extended-release on Oct. 20 featuring four old but newly-released songs, including this most recent track and “Manhattan,” which was shared earlier this summer.
“Some of the main sources of inspiration for our first album, including ‘Talking In My Sleep’ were artists that we all share a love for, and a lot of stuff from the 80s,” Iain Cook shared in a statement.

Depeche Mode, the post-synth-pop group that made sensual broodiness a part of the mainstream, have returned with a new album titled Memento Mori. You can stream it below.
Memento Mori, their first album in five years, is also their official return after the loss of founding member Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher in 2022. Their 15th record and much like many others of the last few years, Memento Mori is rooted in the unexpectedly free time the pandemic granted. The loneliness it bred thematically strings the tracks together, along with some more characteristically defining tropes of the group, like the binary between depuration and delight, and delusive devotion. Production by James Ford and Marta Salogni was key in communicating such rich yet glum atmospheres.
In an interview with Zane Lowe from Apple Music 1, Dave Gahan touched on how minimalism was a part of the group’s approach to the new album. “Some of...

Depeche Mode served as the musical guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night. The new wave icons performed their latest single “Ghosts Again,” a cut from their upcoming album, Memento Mori.
“Ghosts Again” carries an especially heavy weight considering it’s been only a year and a half since the passing of Depeche Mode’s founding keyboardist Andy Fletcher in June 2022. Although the band will never be the same without him, their appearance on Colbert serves as a fitting tribute that proves remaining members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore have no intention of stopping anytime soon.
Additionally, Depeche Mode also performed their classic song “Personal Jesus” for the Colbert audience, which they’ve now shared as a web exclusive. Watch them perform both songs below.

Update, with cause of death Andy “Fletch” Fletcher, keyboard player and founding member of the British band Depeche Mode, died after suffering an aortic dissection while at home on May 26, the band said in a statement on Instagram today.
The cause of death was disclosed by the band at the request of Fletcher’s family, according to the post.
“So, even though it was far, far too soon, he passed naturally and without prolonged suffering,” the band said.
Here is the full statement from band members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore:
We wanted to take a moment and acknowledge the outpouring of love for Andy that we’ve seen from all of you over the last few weeks. It’s incredible to see all of your photos, to read your words, and to see how much Andy meant to all of you. As you can imagine, it’s been a strange,...

Danyel Smith knows charts and awards are flawed metrics of success, but she also understands they are the ones we have, and wants to see Black women earn their due. Charlize Theron inducted electronic music pioneers Depeche Mode into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Saturday night, enthusiastically declaring the group’s music as “the soundtrack to my life.”
Theron — who was recently seen portraying Megyn Kelly in her Oscar-nominated performance in “Bombshell” — recalled seeing the band in concert and coming home in tears. She was so moved by the band that she pushed for their song, “Behind The Wheel,” to be included in her film “Atomic Blonde.”
Depeche Mode first became eligible to be inducted into the Hall in 2006, and have since been nominated three times based on the strength of their albums “Black Celebration” (1986), “Music for the Masses” (1987) and “Violator” (1990). The U.K. band’s melding of rock and electronic elements and dark sensibilities and broad appeal attracted fans like Theron, who said “their music brings people together from all different walks of life.”

Had D.A. Pennebaker never done anything but hop a flight to London, 16mm camera in tow, and follow around a scrawny young singer who jousted with journalists, was worshipped as a frizzy-haired god and entertained himself with entourage-fueled shenanigans, he would still have secured himself a place in rock history and film history. The best-known picture of the documentarian, known as “Penny” to friends and colleagues, finds the then-39-year-old wearing a top hat, jauntily tilted to one side. A camera is hoisted on his shoulder, covering one half of his face.

Adam Levine, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Nick Jonas and other musicians poked fun at themselves in the latest installment of Jimmy Kimmel Live's "Mean Tweets."
Many Twitter users cracked jokes about the celebrities' looks. "Nick Jonas was cute back when he was in the Jonas Brothers, and now he looks like a ferret," the pop singer read. "Watching Alice Cooper and all I can think is that he looks like a ball sack with face paint on!" noted the hard rock icon. "Adam Levine is if a flaccid penis...

In case you missed it this weekend, we got a brand-new full-length trailer for Ready Player One, and we’ve been watching it on repeat since it dropped. Yeah, we might be just a little excited for this movie!
Based on the novel by Ernest Cline, it’s set in 2045, and apparently the real world has so little hope and opportunity that people regularly escape to a virtual world called “The Oasis”. Protagonist Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is no different, except that he’s about to find out that the Oasis is, in fact, not just a game. Here’s our deep dive on the latest trailer:
There’s an endless amount of pop culture references in here, and no doubt there will be more in the movie. I can only...

We recently were treated to a new trailer for Steven Spielberg's feature film adaptation of Ernest Cline's geek culture novel Ready Player One. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it now! I've been watching that damn thing over and over again and I've been enjoying the hell out of it!
If you watched the trailer, then you know that it's packed full of all kinds of surprises and Easter eggs. I eventually ended up going through it frame by frame to try and see what I could find. So, here are a bunch of screenshots from the trailer for you to go through, along with a breakdown of where I point out a few of the cool things that you might have missed. When talking about the story, Cline said:

"It's the only place that feels like I mean anything." Warner Bros has launched the new full theatrical trailer for Steven Spielberg's grand adaptation of Ready Player One, the geeky novel about a kid in the future who logs into a virtual reality world and plays games to win the ultimate prize. The first teaser trailer had a few small glimpses, but this just looks wow - totally jaw-dropping stunning. My goodness. Young actor Tye Sheridan stars as Wade Watts, known in the Oasis gaming world as "Parzival". The full cast includes Mark Rylance as the game's creator, James Halliday, as well as T.J. Miller, Ben Mendelsohn, Simon Pegg, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, Letitia Wright, and Kae Alexander. This trailer actually makes me feel like Spielberg might've pulled this off, and I am excited to see it and experience the entire thing. I really love the footage they're showing in this,...

Like Christian, his character in The Square, Claes Bang speaks with impressive assertiveness. Even when he’s poking fun at himself, he sounds like a man who’s never had any doubts or gotten himself into something he couldn’t get out of. Perhaps it’s this quality that makes his performance in Ruben Östlund’s award winning film so magnetic, and has also raised comparisons to Jon Hamm and James Bond. At age 50, the Danish actor who has mostly worked on stage and television, finds himself in the unlikely position of movie star. Position which he’s filled extraordinarily, having become the sensation of the Cannes Film Festival, as well as a dark horse for the European Film Awards where he’s competing against Colin Farrell and Jean-Louis Trintignant for Best Actor.

Depeche Mode is a band that you really have to be into to get and to enjoy. Formed in Essex back in 1980 they’ve stuck together for this long and have had their share of ups and downs. Like I already said you kind of really have to be into their music to understand and enjoy it, but many people have found it to be a different type of sound that they tend to like a little better than the typical mainstream that seems to be churned out on a regular basis for those that like to go with the

Some of the biggest names in music are among this year's nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
On Thursday, the storied institution announced the musically diverse new slate of nominees, representing classic rock, contemporary alt-rock, hip hop, blues and funk, to name just a few genres.
Among the rock artists in contention for induction are Bon Jovi, Dire Straits, Judas Priest, The Moody Blues, Radiohead, and Rage Against the Machine.
The British pop duo Eurythmics, the funk bands The Meters and Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, British pop rock singer Kate Bush, and hip hop artist and actor LL Cool J are among some of the other possible future inductees.

Charlize Theron excels as an action lead in this cold war spy story, adapted from graphic novel The Coldest City
I can’t think of any actor more deserving of their own pulpy action franchise than Charlize Theron. Having stolen Mad Max: Fury Road from Tom Hardy one-handed (literally), she is relentlessly, murderously brilliant in this adaptation of Antony Johnston’s graphic novel The Coldest City. The setting is Berlin just before the fall of the Wall; the paranoid hangover of the cold war is giving way to a new era of hungry opportunism. A British agent has been murdered; a valuable list is missing. And MI5 asset Lorraine Broughton (Theron, looking like Debbie Harry dipped in venom) is flown in to clear up the mess. There she butts heads with fellow agent David Percival (James McAvoy, skeevy-sexy, accessorised with beer sweats and casual treachery) and has a fling with...

Charlize Theron continues her reign as action movie heroine, kicking major ass in a second trailer for “Atomic Blonde.” “I chose this life,” she says at the top of the preview. “And someday, it’s going to get me killed.” After slaying a bunch of men in a fancy hotel room, she pours herself a drink and says, “but not today.” Also Read: Charlize Theron Suffered Cracked Teeth, 3 Root Canals From 'Atomic Blonde' Stunts The whole trailer is full of brutal, visceral action set to an acidic ’80s playlist of Depeche Mode with the occasional Kanye West mashup.

Nazi fop Richard Spencer can’t stop getting punched in the face, whether literally (by random humans on the street), journalistically (by investigators who uncovered he gets his money from an actual fucking cotton plantation), or even figuratively, by the very pop-culture artists he claims to love. First he confessed his life-long passion for Depeche Mode, to which the band replied with a curt, “Fuck off.” Then he attempted to claim Cabaret’s “Tomorrow Belongs To Me” for the “alt-right,” to which the song’s author’s nephew responded with another “fuck off.”
This same cycle has occurred with the greater “alt-right,” Spencer’s loose coalition of white supremacist trolls, who keep making polite overtures to pop-culture entities that want nothing to do with them. While the “alt-right” do have their own subset of bespoke, racist music, language, and media figures, they also are attempting to live in the world...

Depeche Mode performed their rousing new song "Where's the Revolution" on The Tonight Show Wednesday. Over Martin Gore's smoldering guitar, Andrew Fletcher's mechanized synths, singer Dave Gahan delivered the song with ominous flare. "You've been pissed on for too long/ Your rights abuse/ Your views refused," he sang.
"Where's the Revolution" will appear on Depeche Mode's upcoming album, Spirit, out March 17th. James Ford (Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys) produced the record, which marks the band's first since 2013's Delta Machine.

On Thursday, white nationalist Richard Spencer was asked at the Conservative Political Action Conference (Cpac) if he liked rock music, and to Olivia Nuzzi of New York magazine, Spencer responded by declaring that British electronic rock band Depeche Mode is the “official band of the alt-right.” The only problem? The feeling is most definitely not mutual. In a statement released to Gothamist and several other media outlets, a rep for Depeche Mode called Spencer’s comments, and stated that Depeche Mode “has no ties to Richard Spencer or the alt right and does not support the alt right movement.” Also Read: Newsweek Retracts.

It's just after 6 p.m. on a Friday, and Duff's – a noisy heavy-metal bar adorned with autographed memorabilia and jagged-looking instruments in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – has just opened its doors to the sober, work-weary masses. In the center of the room, a woman clad in a black dress and high heels is headbanging atop a carpet adorned with Iron Maiden's corpse-mascot Eddie. The music is "Bleed," an angular, machine-gun–like aural assault that's little over seven minutes long, by Swedish extreme-metal growlers Meshuggah. Bargoers sip their beer in the back,...

Coachella 2017 is still a few months out, but anticipation for its next edition is already running high. With the passing of this year’s festival season follows suit a hunger for a new set of lineups to obsess over, and Coachella is certainly leading the pack in this regard. DJ Snake and DJ Khaled have both leaked their slots on the roster, while a number of alleged headliners like Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar, and Beyonce have also been hinted at.
If the trend of previous years follows suit, Goldenvoice won’t begin to reveal the official lineup until January, and aside from some fairly reliable predictions, we’ll have to wait until then to get a better idea of what to expect from the upcoming event.
As illustrated by a timeline put together by Billboard, the evolution of Coachella’s lineup over the years has seen great changes, but electronic dance...
