With the insane games that the various streaming platforms are pulling in terms of removing content from their services (sometimes projects that were made specifically for those platforms), an added emphasis has been placed on home video. And with good reason. The only way you can insure that the movies you love will be around is by owning them on Blu-ray. Thankfully the home video labels have been stepping up their game, with deluxe packages overflowing with extras and feature films presented in their best possible format.

Every March feels like Christmas for classic film fans as television’s home for timeless movie fare, TCM, finds a fresh way to package its massive slate of Oscar-worthy films in the annual 31 Days of Oscar marathon. How should it be organized? By decade? By award category? A to Z? For this mega-marathon’s 29th round, the 352 titles airing — all of them either a winner or nominee across Academy categories — are bundled under one of 55 genres. The viewing joys begin on Wednesday, March 1 at daybreak with the category of “Family Ties,” led by Orson Welles’ masterful 1942 period piece about wealthy Midwesterners The Magnificent Ambersons. Six more kinfolk classics run throughout the day: James Dean and Richard Davalos in 1955’s sibling rivalry drama East of Eden at 9:30am/8:30c and Judy Garland’s frothy 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis at 11:30am/10:30c make for quite a double feature!

Currently in early development, the series will be written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather, Elia Kazan, helmed the 1955 film adaptation of Steinbeck’s novel.
Set in California between the Civil War and World War I, the novel tells the interconnected stories of the Hamilton family, an Irish immigrant family with nine children, and the Trask family, lead by the wealthy Adam Trask.
Also in news – ‘Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow spin-off in the works at HBO
The limited series adaptation will explore the novel’s themes of trauma and repair; love and betrayal; duty and free will. The series will sketch an intimate portrait of the Trask family against the backdrop of huge historical forces — or, as Steinbeck put it, “the story of...

John Wayne plays a German sea captain in a film that goes out of its way to create a favorable image of our former enemy, with hardly a Nazi flag or even a German accent in sight. Wayne and his co-star Lana Turner are as Teutonic as Blondie and Dagwood, yet the film works as a basic adventure – we like the charismatic star, and the sea chase format guarantees extra interest.

Unsung actress Beverly Garland becomes TV’s first lady cop, in what’s claimed to be the first TV show filmed on the streets of New York City. This one-season wonder from 1957 has vintage locations, fairly tough-minded storylines and solid performances, from Bev and a vast gallery of stage and TV actors on the way up.

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Jack Hill's Spider Baby (1967) will be showing January 24 - February 23 and Pit Stop (1967) will be showing January 25 - February 24, 2017 in the United States.Quentin Tarantino, unsurprisingly a gushing fan of Jack Hill, once famously compared the exploitation specialist to venerable Hollywood icon Howard Hawks, presumably on the basis of his distinctly personal preferences and his unassuming, across-the-board genre dabbling. Of course, those genres explored by Hawks—from westerns to screwball comedies—were considerably different than those in which Hill excels, but the point is well taken: within his respective niches, Hill does it as well as anyone, with skill and without pretense. This includes quintessential Blaxploitation classics like Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974), and some of the finest women-in-prison films ever made—yes, there are some very fine women-in-prison films—namely The Big Doll House (1971) and The Big Bird Cage...

This summer, you've seen no shortage of tricked out vehicles getting destroyed in interesting ways in "Mad Max: Fury Road," while Dwayne Johnson literally flexed his way out of a cast in "Furious 7." But over forty years ago, director Jack Hill ("Coffy," "Foxy Brown") made a movie with both those things but with far less money and CGI enhancement. Today we have an exclusive clip from his newly restored cult film "Pit Stop." Read More: SXSW Review: 'Furious 7' Starring Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Paul Walker & More Starring Sig Haig, Richard Davalos, Brian Donlevy, Ellen Burstyn (billed as Ellen McRae), and Beverly Washburn, the film follows street punk Rick Bowman who gets bailed out of jail by a race promoter and put on the figure-8 track to square off against the dangerous Hawk Sidney. ★★★☆☆Pit Stop, a 1969 collaboration between B-movie king Roger Corman and director Jack Hill (renown primarily for his work across a number of Blaxploitation titles), represents something of a dream pairing for trash cinema aficionados. With its intriguing Faustian-like plot, stunning stock car racing footage and memorable performances, including a young, very beautiful Ellen Burstyn (credited here as Ellen McRae), Pit Stop proves to be a cut about the usual low-grade genre works from that period in Us cinema. Weathered James Dean lookalike Richard Davalos plays Rick Bowman, a young tearaway (at 39) who has a penchant for fast cars and a talent for pushing them to their extremes.

Nearly 60 years after his death, James Dean is still mourned by millions of fans throughout the world. Jennifer Lawrence and Gary Ross will reunite for a new adaptation of the John Steinbeck novel East of Eden. Word is that Ross plans to split the American book into two features, in which Lawrence will play the role of Cathy Ames, the “cold and cruel” wife of the story’s main protagonist.
If you’re not that familiar with the novel, here’s a short summary:
Set in the rich farmland of California’s Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. Here Steinbeck created some of his most memorable characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity; the inexplicability of love; and the murderous consequences of love’s absence.

Exclusive: Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer have closed a deal with the John Steinbeck estate for a new version of his seminal novel East Of Eden that will be developed as a re-team for The Hunger Games director Gary Ross and Jennifer Lawrence. I’m told that the book is Ross’ favorite American novel and that the director plans to tell the generational story in two films. The novel previously was adapted into one picture, the 1955 Eliza Kazan-directed film that starred James Dean and Richard Davalos as sons who compete for the attention of their farmer father in Salinas, CA. Ross wants Lawrence to play Cathy Ames, the cold and cruel mother of the boys and estranged wife of the farmer. The films will tell their stories, leading into the rivalry between their sons. The studio and Imagine first acquired the 1952 novel back in 2004. This was after...

James Dean made his unforgettable debut in Elia Kazan's emotionally charged adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic tale of sibling rivalry. It's a reworking of the Cain and Abel tale, with farmboy Dean trying to out-compete his twin brother (the under-rated Richard Davalos) for the affections of their religious-nut father (Raymond Massey). Nice girl Julie Harris has the misfortune to be caught between them, while Jo Van Fleet won an Oscar as the boys' estranged and borderline-deranged mother.

10: Gentleman’s Agreement
Perhaps a bit tame by today’s standards, but Kazan’s message drama was an extremely important film in 1947, marking one of the first times that the word Jew was explicity used in a Hollywood picture. Kazan was known throughout his career as a champion of social causes, and Gentleman’s Agreement earned him the first of two Best Director wins (out of five such nominations). Agreement follows a respected gentile journalist (Gregory Peck) hired by a magazine publisher (Albert Dekker) to write a gutsy expose about anti-Semitism. In order to deliver a true, honest and powerful story, he decides to present himself as Jewish everywhere he goes. Gregory Peck gives unquestionably the second best performance of his career. His strong, steady portrayal earned him a Best Actor nomination (although not a win).

From the silent movie era into the early 1930s, the standard aspect ratio of Hollywood films was 1.33:1, a ratio developed by cinema pioneer Thomas Edison. Early in the “talkie” era, when the soundtrack was added to the side of the film frame, the width of the image was reduced even more, creating a more square-shaped picture. Since the early 1950s, most movies have been filmed in a process where the width of the visual frame is between 1.85 to 2.4 times greater than the height. This means that for every inch of visual height, the frame as projected on the screen is between 1.85 to 2.4 times as wide. This results in a panoramic view that can add a greater breadth and perception of the environment and mood of a movie. The rise in popularity of television is credited with inciting the motion picture’s move to the widescreen systems that flourished throughout the 50s,...

No 79: Montgomery Clift 1920-66
Like Marlon Brando, his close friend, fellow maverick and chief rival for the title of greatest American actor of his generation, the tall, lean Clift was born in Omaha, Nebraska. His father was an overbearing, right-wing banker and stockbroker of considerably fluctuating fortunes; his ambitious mother, an illegitimate child adopted at birth, was obsessed with establishing her membership of a distinguished patrician family from the south. Along with his twin sister and elder brother, Clift was privately educated.
At the age of 15, Monty, as everyone called him, made his Broadway debut and for the next decade was constantly employed there, usually playing handsome, sensitive sons, though with the possible exception of Thornton Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth (directed in 1942 by Elia Kazan) none of the plays he appeared in entered the classic repertoire. For years, he rejected Hollywood offers until accepting the role...
