Who are we to disagree Danielle Harris? When looking for a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw, nothing in our completely mad up rules that say a movie can’t be well received at the time of release. It can win awards including one from the audiences that saw it at TIFF and the kind of go away. There are a ton of movies that are great and original films in a genre that is nearly as obsessed with sequels and movie universes as DC and Marvel are today. Stake Land (watch it Here) is an original piece of media that is one part Walking Dead, one part The Road, and all together one of the Best Horror Movies you Never Saw.
Stake Land was destined to be a movie that few had seen as its theatrical run produced about 33 thousand in theaters but in an era of physical media and streaming services,...

Zombie movies? Can’t shake a stick without knocking a minimum of 20 quality ones out of a tree. You want vampires? Tell me the decade and the type and I’ll give you recommendations to keep you going for weeks. Werewolves? Well, for some reason, the werewolf falls in with his other Universal monster counterparts The Mummy, Frankenstein, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon as creatures that should have a lot more entries come to mind. I’m not saying that there aren’t any, quite the contrary. I can tell you quite a few must-see werewolf movies that you all probably know but the list is not nearly as deep as the other monsters mentioned above. Late Phases (watch it Here), also known under the stupidly generic title of Night of the Wolf, does a lot of interesting things while being a thoroughly enjoyable and almost arthouse movie...

This week’s new horror releases bring The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log” chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It features the iconic vampire at his most monstrous as he lurks about the schooner and preys upon the passengers and crew. Thanks to Dracula, much of cinema’s portrayal of the vampire leans romantic; their predatory tactics are often seductive, masking their monstrous nature until far too late. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to monstrous vampires, the vicious bloodsuckers unafraid to show off their inner creature. These vampires are vicious in their kills and showcase great creature designs.

Apocalyptic infection flicks rarely show the initial chaos of their respective outbreaks. In fact, most zombie movies tend to skip over the downfall of civilization entirely, focusing on what happens after society has already collapsed. And even when these stories dare to take place during the immediate aftermath of a global crisis, most filmmakers (like George A. Romero in his seminal Night of the Living Dead) prefer to place their main characters in isolated locations where they’re only shown brief snippets of how the rest of the world is dealing with the calamity.
Obviously, there’s a simple explanation for this. Large scale stories need large scale production budgets and few studios are willing to bet that amount of money on a gory genre flick. Even World War Z had to be tragically neutered in order to justify its blockbuster financing, and indie filmmakers can’t exactly pay out...

Stars: Nick Damici, Ethan Embry, Tom Noonan, Tina Louise, Rutanya Alda, Caitlin O’Heaney, Lance Guest, Erin Cummings, Larry Fessenden | Written by Eric Stolze | Directed by Adrián García Bogliano
Nick Damici has been a familiar face in the horror genre for years now. Primarily working with writer/director Jim Mickle, on whose films he has also co-written, this gruff, large but still oddly charming presence has impressed before but he was never given a true lead part until this film. With Mickle uninvolved, although long-time cohort Larry Fessenden produces and pops up in a cameo role, Damici takes centre stage in Late Phases, a film with the wonderfully juicy premise of a blind ‘Nam veteran getting revenge on a werewolf after it kills his best friend.
It feels appropriate to base this review around Damici as he is the chugging motor which drives the film and the beating heart which actually makes you invest in it.

After eight scintillating seasons as TV’s most compelling serial killer on “Dexter,” Michael C. Hall is playing for the other team. Looking like a grown-up version of Jonathan Groff’s Holden in “Mindhunter,” Hall plays a detective hunting an elusive serial killer in a new thriller debuting on Netflix later this month. Directed by Sundance award-winning director Jim Mickle, “In the Shadow of the Moon” sets out to catch a repeat killer leaving a string of dead bodies with mysterious bite marks on their necks. The recently released trailer promises an intriguing dose of supernatural elements to keep the viewer on their toes.
Here’s the official synopsis: “In 1988, Philadelphia police officer Thomas Lockhart (Boyd Holbrook), hungry to become a detective, begins tracking a serial killer who mysteriously resurfaces every nine years. But when the killer’s crimes begin to defy all scientific explanation, Lock’s obsession with finding...

“Hap and Leonard” has been canceled after three seasons, Variety has confirmed.
The SundanceTV anthology series was based on the novel series of the same name written by Joe R. Lansdale, with each season based on one of the novels. It followed two lifelong best friends, Hap Collins (James Purefoy), an East Texas white boy with a weakness for Southern women, and Leonard Pine (Michael Kenneth Williams), a gay, black Vietnam vet with a hot temper. Over the three seasons, the show also featured stars like Christina Hendricks, Jimmi Simpson, Tiffany Mack, Cranston Johnson, Brian Dennehy, and Irma P. Hall.
Season 1 was based on the book “Savage Season,” while Season 2 was based on “Mucho Mojo.” Season 3 was based on “Two Bear Mambo.” “Hap and Leonard” was a wholly-owned original series produced by AMC Studios. Tagline: "The New Civil War Has Begun." Directors: Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott. Writers: Nick Damici and Graham Reznick Cast: Dave Bautista, Brittany Snow and Angelic Zambrana. Bushwick is an action thriller, which had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Starring former pro-wrestler Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect, 2012), the film tries to answer the question: what if Texas seceded from the United States? Naturally, they would attack Bushwick! a suburb of Brooklyn. Writers Nick Damici (Stakeland II) and Graham Reznick have offered a modern retelling of the Grimm Brothers' Little Red Riding Hood, as Lucy (Snow) attempts to get to Granny's house. The path is littered with gunfire as the big bad wolf gets in the way. As well, much of the film is shot via long takes, with a steadicam. This shooting technique puts the viewer right in close with the characters. Meanwhile, there is a...

Terrified, baffled, and on the verge of becoming a victim of the sudden lawlessness, Lucy teams up with reluctant veteran Stupe (Dave Bautista: Blade Runner 2049) as they both attempt to get to safety… if such a place exists. To celebrate the home entertainment release of Bushwick, available on DVD and Blu-ray 23rd October, we have a copy of the film on DVD up for grabs, courtesy of Kaleidoscope Entertainment!
It’s Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista versus an entire Texas battalion in New York City in this all-out action thriller from the makers of Cooties and Stake Land.
Action movie stars don’t come much bigger than Dave Bautista, Drax from the smash hit Guardians of the Galaxy series, and the villainous Hinx from the latest James Bond film Spectre. Here, front and centre as Stupe, a take no prisoners ex-Marine on the warpath against a Texas militia invading New York, Bushwick establishes Bautista – soon to be seen in Blade Runner 2049 – as an action hero on a par with Vin Diesel and The Rock. Brittany Snow, from the Pitch Perfect movies, excels as Lucy, who,...

Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (Cooties), this pacey U.S. invasion thriller picks up points for its premise, performances and photography, but the script passes up the chance for some political commentary.
The film’s extremely strong opening has college student Lucy (Brittany Snow) getting off the subway in Bushwick, New York and suddenly finding herself in the middle of a war zone, with armed militia on the streets. Dodging the hails of gunfire, Lucy is rescued by hulking ex-Marine Stupe (Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Dave Bautista), who agrees to help her make it to her grandmother’s house, a few blocks away. In Bushwick, New York City resembles a militaristic wasteland. We’re to believe Texas has formed a Southern pact and is leading a new Civil War in the name of secession. It’s a scary reality that brings to light recent current events driven by unjust animosity. A made-up Brooklyn invasion and actual Dallas sniper shooting are horrifyingly similar topics, so you’d think Nick Damici and Graham Reznick’s script would be fueled with warnings, or anger, or revelations. You’d think there’d be something more to raging fires and black-suited militants. You would think – but that’s not the case. Crumbling skylines and Red-Dawn-meets-Purge vibes can only get you so far.

Hot off their classroom-zombie opus Cooties, directors Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott conceived Bushwick and turned scripting duties over to a couple of New York indie-filmmaking fixtures: Nick Damici (Stake Land) and Graham Reznick. Their combined forces resulted in a thriller that almost never stops moving, with Brittany Snow ably conveying Lucy’s discovery of her survival instinct and Dave Bautista diverges from his iconic wisecracking Drax to a more taciturn, surprisingly affecting but still kick-ass hero.
A trip to Grandma’s place has never been as dangerous as it turns out to be for Lucy (Brittany Snow), who’s bringing her new boyfriend to meet the family in her old neighbourhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn. The couple is suddenly, violently separated as helicopter-borne, machine-gun-wielding attackers overrun the streets, shooting anyone they see. Bushwick, an urban invasion thriller directed by Cooties' Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, played tonight at Cannes in the Directors' Fortnight Features program. Yesterday, Collider debuted three new teaser posters, running with the colors of American patriotism. You will find them below, each a slight variant from the other apart from the color scheme. Bushwick stars Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect), Angelic Zambrana (Precious), and Jeremie Harris ("Legion"). The chilling and poignant tale was written by Nick Damici and Graham Reznick; so long ago they come across as damned prophets now that Bushwick is coming to U.S. cinemas, VOD and Digital HD on August 27th. When Lucy (Brittany Snow) steps off the subway, she walks into an utter bloodbath...

When Stake Land released, it was a breath of fresh air for lovers of the fanged monsters. The vampires were back, and in a movie, that used them well. Now that Stake Land II is here, does it manage the same?
When Martin’s (Connor Paolo) wife and daughter are murdered by a group of vampires controlled by a vampire known as The Mother (Kristina Hughes), he goes in search of Mister (Nick Damici). Knowing the old vampire hunter can help him defeat this new vampire.
Stake Land II is a welcome return to the post-apocalyptic world of vampires, where humanity is sparse and the vampires and their followers are now in control. The Mother is an interesting vampire that we don’t really see enough of,...

Even the title seems oddly uninspired. Very little of this follow-up to Jim Mickle's excellent 2010 vampire-horror film Stake Land seems fresh or exciting. Everything we witness feels inevitable, as though the writer and the actors were simply going through well-worn motions. This doesn't mean that the film is bad. On the contrary, the film is decidedly 'not bad', but after waiting seven years for a sequel I would have hoped for more than that.

In a world crawling with vampiric creatures, Mister helps equalize the fight between the living and the undead. Nick Damici’s memorable character returns for a new journey fueled by Martin’s (Connor Paolo) desire for revenge in Stake Land II. With the sequel out now on digital platforms and hitting Blu-ray and DVD on February 14th from Dark Sky Films, Daily Dead had the pleasure of speaking with Damici about reprising the role of Mister and much more.
Read on for our discussion with Damici, in which he talks about his plans for a third Stake Land film and shares his thoughts on the Stake Land TV series that he had once been developing. He also talks about the response to Bushwick (a movie he co-wrote) following the film’s Sundance screenings, what to expect in the upcoming season of Hap and Leonard, and an interesting conversation he once...

While at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, I had the opportunity to check out a few films that were just a bit outside the horror realm, including Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott’s sociopolitical actioner Bushwick, Marianna Palka’s bleak comedy Bitch, and David Lowery’s unforgettable A Ghost Story, and you can read my reviews for these on-the-fringe-of-horror titles right here in one place.
Bushwick: You couldn’t ask for a bigger departure from Milott and Murnion’s previous film, Cooties, than their most recent effort, Bushwick. Their frantically-paced actioner stars Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow as two residents of the New York borough who must fend off an invasion after several red states decide to declare a new civil war on the rest of the country. By giving us very little information on just what is happening throughout Bushwick, co-writers Nick Damici and Graham Reznick keep viewers firmly...

Rlj Entertainment has purchased the U.S. rights to the action-thriller “Bushwick,” which premiered on January 21 in the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section. The deal for the film was in the seven figures, according to a statement.
Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott, “Bushwick” is also currently being pursued by major studio distributor for a multi-territory distribution deal. The film centers on a woman named Lucy who emerges from a Brooklyn subway to find that her neighborhood is under attack by black-clad military soldiers. An ex-Marine corpsman, Stupe, reluctantly helps her fight for survival through a civil war, as Texas attempts to secede from the United States of America. “Bushwick” stars Dave Bautista and Brittany Snow.
“With a great cast and a very timely story, we feel this is a film that will resonate with audiences all across the country,” Mark Ward, chief acquisitions officer of Rlj Entertainment said in a statement.

Bushwick. the sophomore effort from Cooties directors Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott has been picked up by Rlj Entertainment for distribution in the U.S. The screenplay by was written by Nick Damici (Stakeland and Late Phases) and Graham Reznik (Stakeland, The Innkeepers and House of the Devil). There could not be a more poignant screenplay out there at the moment given the current political climate in the U.S. On the way to Grandma’s house with a new boyfriend in tow, Lucy (Snow) steps off the subway into an utter bloodbath on the streets of Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood, according to the film’s description. Sometimes the only possible way to guarantee safety during difficult situations is to ally with the unlikeliest of accomplices.
