Out of the two dueling White House takeover pics that vied for box office dominance in 2013, it’s safe to say that Olympus Has Fallen emerged victorious against White House Down (though there are some, myself included, who feel that the latter film was far superior). While White House Down disappointed at the box office, Olympus Has Fallen made more on a smaller budget and certainly did well enough to warrant a sequel, which kicked off production in London today.
Rather obviously titled London Has Fallen, the follow-up reunites stars Aaron Eckhart, Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett and Melissa Leo. This time around, Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Butler) and President of the United States Benjamin Asher (Eckhart) find themselves battling a terrorist threat in London.
Check out the official press release, which includes an updated synopsis for the pic. Then let us know, will you be lining up...

What a busy twelve months it’s been for costume design. Really though, this art, or craft, or business (Deborah Nadoolman Landis insists it is definitely a business) gets more talked about each year. 2013 was especially exciting however as it seemed every month something even more thrilling arrived to fawn over. In the last few weeks alone we have had The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Sleepy Hollow, and now American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street on the horizon. Dipping back further, it was Stoker that got us excited about subtext, The Great Gatsby that slammed the lid on that twenties revival once and for all, and Behind the Candelabra that put Michael Douglas in a 16ft fox fur cape and white brocade jumpsuit.

If you’re not watching BBC 2’s gangster western Peaky Blinders, stop reading now and seek it out on iPlayer – there’s still one episode left so you have time to join the party. Peaky Blinders is the slow burning tale of a volatile, family led criminal gang, headed by calculating brother Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), and their rise to power in post-World War I Birmingham. It does not sound glamorous and it isn’t, yet is all the more compelling for embracing the filthy side of what many considered to be the cusp of the ‘Roaring Twenties’. Not in Birmingham it wasn’t.
Thankfully Peaky Blinders had costume designer Stephanie Collie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The Look of Love) on board to recreate this era in, her own words, “a heightened way”. Peaky Blinders is not intended for school history lessons, it’s a ‘Hollywoodised’ vision of 1919 with a TV budget.

Let’s get this straight: Peaky Blinders is not Boardwalk Empire. It’s a post World War I gangster drama, during roughly the same time period (1919 as opposed to the early 20’s), it’s gritty, features loyal yet warring brothers, is as cool as ice chips and doesn’t pull any punches. However Boardwalk Empire is set in the attractive seaside landscape of Atlantic City, USA, while Peaky Blinders is set in Birmingham. The whole palette is different too. Boardwalk is colourful and vibrant, Peaky is dark and dingy. Evidently this extends to the clothes. You wouldn’t have got far walking around Birmingham in an orange silk shirt and camel coat; this was tweed and flannel country, about as sunny as a coal pit. This does not change the fact that everyone in the show still looks incredible, especially the gents. Best of all this isn’t a difficult style to recreate now,...

Must admit, we kind of saw this one coming. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire costume designer Trish Summerville has teamed up with online fashion retailer Net-a-Porter to produce 16 ready-to-wear outfits, leather goods and jewellery tied into the film.
These ensembles will available exclusively at Net-a-Porter while being simultaneously promoted through Lionsgate’s Capital Couture website. Summerville, recently honoured as Costume Designer of the Year at the 10th Annual Style Awards, commented she’s “extremely proud of the designs that we created for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and there’s no partner more appropriate for Capitol Couture than the world’s most cutting-edge luxury retailer”.
If anyone can make such a collection work, it’s Trish Summerville. Although her tie-in range for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and H&M did not exactly set the world alight, this was probably due to poor marketing than anything else; consumers really...

As is often the way with costume designers, Stephanie Collie is something of an unsung hero. We will not reel off her entire back catalogue, but it does include South Riding (2011, TV), Telstar (2008) Peter’s Friends (1992) and perhaps most exciting of all, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998).
Now, anyone old enough to remember when Lock, Stock arrived will remember just what an incredible influence its Mod inspired costumes had on the world of fashion. You could not pick up a men’s magazine of the time without seeing some guy in slim trousers and a jersey polo shirt. Stephanie Collie invented this look, thus providing one of the clearest examples of how costume design can transcend a movie and become something more. We would go so far as to say Stephanie Collie helped define an era.

Beginning in the late 1950s, into the 60’s, predominantly through the mid to late 70’s, then into the early 90’s, costume designer Stephanie Collie’s work for The Look of Love covers several distinct periods.
This is the true story of King of Soho billionaire Paul Raymond (Steve Coogan) told via the many women in his life. Helpfully these women confirm to a specific body type which is still relatable as the model ideal today, i.e. very slender or the ‘no-body body’. This means that all the garments on screen look fantastic. They are costumes above all but still relevant as fashion; the 60’s especially still informs contemporary style for women’s clothes. The 60’s and 70’s will always be one of the fondest eras to recreate on screen, yet also one of the trickiest. Potentially The Look of Love was only a feather boa away from being fancy dress.

This week’s world according to costume design.
Man of Steel
Superman’s cape was CGI for much of the movie. Makes sense when you think about it.
Look of Love
Stephanie Collie on recreating 1960s Soho. Fascinating for anyone who knows the time and/or setting.
Behind the Candelabra
Deirdre Clemente and Aisling O’Connor explain why Liberace’s costumes mattered, because they really did.
Beyond Gatsby
Typically engrossing Dtsft piece about interpreting the 1920s on film. Examples from Thoroughly Modern Millie, Chicago, Midnight in Paris…
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Costume design in the Indian film industry.
Revenge
‘It felt like a natural extension’, Jill Ohannesson talks about her upcoming Revenge clothing line.
Living with a costume designer
Educational and painful, apparently.
The iconic moment
Michael Kaplan, Mark Bridges, Ellen Mirojnick and Jeffrey Kurland discuss favourite costumes from their own back catalogue and others. The panel is moderated by Laura Dern.

This film was originally reviewed on Sept. 18 at the Toronto Festival of Festivals. It opens Christmas Day.
In Hollywood-ese, it might be dismissed as ''The Return of the Oxford Six'' or ''The Big Fog, '' but ''Peter's Friends'' is a bubbly rebottling of a new-vintage story form -- the reunion of old college mates. Stylish, witty and smartly framed by Kenneth Branagh, this Samuel Goldwyn Co. film is likely to shine on the select-site circuit.
This time the get-together is at an English country estate, the recent inheritance of Peter Stephen Fry), a 30-ish bachelor who lives alone, looked after only by his longtime cook and servant (Phyllida Law). An unsold playwright, Peter gamely calls six college chums, all fellow artsy types, to gather to bring in the New Year 1992.
It's been 10 long years since they've all been together and all have gone in different but predictable directions: Recovering-alcoholic writer Andrew (Branagh) brings along his hideous, Hollywood-star wife (Rita Rudner); sexually insatiable costume designer Sarah (Alphonsia Emmanuel) tosses in with her latest conquest (Tony Slattery); songsters Roger (Hugh Laurie) and Mary (Imelda Staunton), now married, tote along the grief of a child loss; while lonely book editor Maggie (Emma Thompson) arrives light, with her smidgen of self-esteem.
While spoilsports may niggle that some of the main characters' personal and emotional baggage seem lifted from a trendy trunk of pop psychology books, screenwriters Rita Rudner and Martin Bergman have brilliantly and thoughtfully presented a full house of credible and sympathetic human beings. Befitting the brainy and talented characters, the dialogue is terrifically balmy and clever but the wit and verbal alacrity are not merely cosmetic sheens for a surface entertainment -- ''Peter's Friends, '' at its story core, is a kind but piercing look at some very troubled hearts.
Branagh's direction is diffidently dazzling: in this case, a stiff upper lip properly braced by an impish wit. Throughout, ''Peter's Friends'' is devilishly alive and kicking, expertly goosed by the top-notch technical team. Tim Harvey's production design is hilariously resonant in its individual particulars, while Susan Coates and Stephanie Collie's smart and silly costuming makes true and lasting character impressions. Under Branagh's deft and playful hand, the musical selections, from Cyndi Lauper to Tina Turner, kick in some playfully telling contrapuntal punch.
The superbly selected ensemble is a uniform delight, everyone wondrously capturing their characters' being, warts and all. Special plaudits to Fry as the gracious but burdened host and to Emmanuel as the desperately promiscuous costumer. In the grand old tradition of wise and dry English servantry, Law is a droll delight.
