Most noted for its troubled production background, this hospital-set murder thriller turns a doctor into a detective: James Coburn’s medico undertakes an amateur investigation of a crime involving an illegal abortion, and the cover-up thereof. Although tangled up in the crazy James Aubrey-Kirk Kerkorian regime at MGM, Blake Edwards’ film can boast a strong supporting cast: Jennifer O’Neill, Pat Hingle, Elizabeth Allan, Dan O’Herlihy, James Hong, Michael Blodgett, Regis Toomey and John Hillerman.

The Warner Archive has released the 1972 MGM thriller The Carey Treatment on Blu-ray. James Coburn has one of his best roles as Dr. Peter Carey, a rebellious but esteemed pathologist who moves to Boston to take a prominent position at one of the city's most highly regarded hospitals. The charismatic Carey loses no time in gaining friends, alienating top brass and bedding the comely chief dietician (Jennifer O'Neill). However, he soon finds himself embroiled in a politically volatile investigation when a fellow surgeon is arrested for performing an illegal abortion on the 15 year-old daughter of the hospital's crusty administrator (Dan O'Herlihy). (The movie was released a year before the landmark Roe V. Wade decision that legalized abortion in America and now appears to be on the verge of being reversed.) Coburn believes his friend's protestations of innocence and decides to launch his own investigation into the matter.

Peter Carey’s 1988 novel “Oscar and Lucinda” contains a section in which a glass church is floated down a river. It’s such a striking image that one imagines it must have been the spur for the whole intricate story, just as the sight of a large tree borne on a barge, cutting a crisp swath through calm blue coastal waters and trailing an arc of questions in its wake, might trigger a documentary as quietly magnificent and strange as Salomé Jashi’s “Taming the Garden.”
Across an immaculately slow and beautiful 92 minutes, Jashi’s film sometimes recalls experimental essays like Véréna Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor’s “Leviathan,” with similarly outstanding cinematography from Jashi and co-dp Goga Devdariani. Occasionally, with a shot across treetops in which one patch of greenery moves with bizarre animal grace while all else is stationary, it looks like one of Tolkien’s Ents has decided to take a stroll.

2020, as well as being an all-round garbage fire, is likely to go down as a strange year for film. Almost all of year’s biggest titles remain in limbo, waiting for cinemas to be able to safely reopen. That said, more than half way through the year, we have now seen a lot of excellent films getting released. Some managed to sneak in to cinemas in ‘the time before’, but many have made their debuts via streaming or paid VOD.
Even with a much reduced slate, there are still great films out there that have either got lost in the shuffle or might not have had the mainstream appeal to connect with an audience as wide as they deserve. Here, we’ve got several of the Hey U Guys staff together to pick some of their favourites of 2020 so far that you might not have caught up with yet.

George MacKay delivers a star-making performance in “1917.” After making his film debut at age 10 in the 2003 live-action “Peter Pan,” he played occasional film and TV roles and realized at age 19 “acting is what I wanted to do.” Since then, he’s appeared in an earlier WWI saga, “Private Peaceful,” and played Viggo Mortensen’s rebellious son in “Captain Fantastic” — and he has three more films coming up.
When you started acting, did you have any role models?
I liked performances that are commanding, brave and big, like John Leguizamo in Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet,” and I loved everyone in “Gladiator.” As I got older, I would hear actors talking about “smaller is better, less is more.” I understood that when I saw Al Pacino in the“Godfather” movies. He does nothing, but he does everything; it’s all going on with him.
What was your first reaction on reading the “1917” script?...

After a foray into Hollywood blockbusters with Assassin’s Creed, Justin Kurzel returned to Australia to tell another story of true crime, following his harrowing debut feature Snowtown. True History of the Kelly Gang tells the 19th-century tale of notorious outlaw, bushranger and folk hero Ned Kelly. Starring George MacKay and Orlando Schwerdt as Ned in different time periods, as well as Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, Essie Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, and Charlie Hunnam, the first international trailer has landed ahead of a release next year.
C.J. Prince said in his review, “True History of the Kelly Gang opens with a title card stating that nothing in the film is actually true, a convenient choice for director Justin Kurzel as it lays out his film’s main point from the very start. The film is an adaptation from Peter Carey’s novel of the same name, and the title is meant to be a little ironic.

Memento Films has launched a new trailer for Justin Kurzel’s ‘True History of the Kelly Gang’ featuring the man of the moment George MacKay.
Inspired by Peter Carey’s Man Booker prize-winning novel on the notorious Australian outlaw, Ned Kelly, is directed by Kurzel.
This wouldn’t be the first time Ned Kelly has had his story told on the big screen, actors such as Heath Ledger and even Mick Jagger have played the famed criminal. However, Kurzel’s version is not quite what you would expect.
This time around 1917’s George MacKay plays Kelly amongst a cast of Essie Davis, Nicholas Hoult, Thomasin McKenzie and Russell Crowe.

Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang will open in Australian cinemas on January 9, just 18 days before its Australia Day premiere on Stan.
The short window and limited theatrical release were virtually inevitable after Stan announced the bushranger epic starring George MacKay, Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult and Essie Davis would premiere in summer as a Stan Original.
The major chains are determined to protect the traditional 90 day window and will not screen the film so distributor Transmission Films this week will start booking the title at the independent cinemas that are screening the Netflix productions The King, The Irishman, Marriage Story and The Two Popes and Amazon Studios’ The Report and Brittany Runs a Marathon.
The Netflix titles are screening at the Eddie Tamir family-owned Randwick Ritz Cinemas and Melbourne’s Lido, Classic and Cameo cinemas plus Mel Gibson...

Justin Kurzel’s True History of the Kelly Gang is now officially a Stan original Australian production and will be released in cinemas and on the streamer this summer.
The launch date and the release window are yet to be revealed by Stan or the distributor Transmission Films – but it’s fair to assume Stan won’t have to abide by the usual 90-day hold back after the theatrical debut.
In a statement issued by Stan, Kurzel said: “I am thrilled in the boldness and daring by Stan to embrace our ambitious film. For Australians to see our take on Peter Carey’s extraordinary book in cinemas and on Stan over the summer is very exciting. I hope as many eyes as possible get the opportunity to see a film the makers are deeply proud of.”

Justin Kurzel had set the indie film world alight with his debut feature Snowtown, and its follow-up, Macbeth, seemed to confirm the arrival of a director whose vision was unique and stunning. That director returns to his brand of cinema this year with True History of the Kelly Gang, which adapts Peter Carey’s novel about Ned Kelly into a rip-roaring, contemporary-feeling fever dream about outlaws, identity and sexuality.
But, in between, Kurzel was distracted by a difficult time on Assassin’s Creed, his first foray into Hollywood filmmaking, and his feelings of frustration in trying to pull it off. “Assassin’s Creed was an incredibly challenging film to make,” he says now. “I just got completely caught up in the maelstrom of that, and for a whole lot of reasons it was a difficult film to write, to make, and to land. When Australian robber Ned Kelly was executed in 1880 at the age of 25, his last words were reported as “Such is life.” Director Justin Kurzel’s sizzling, violent epic “True History of the Kelly Gang” questions that myth, suggesting that the legendary Australian criminal would never shrug off his fate, since he was a fighter right through to the bitter end. The movie hovers in a curious paradox, coming across as both operatic tribute and horrific condemnation, but it’s never less than a nasty crime drama with plenty of grimy characters to keep the stakes compelling throughout.
Working with his regular screenwriter Shaun Grant, Kurzel has constructed a taut and vivid overview of Kelly’s harsh upbringing and how it transformed him into a vengeful monstrosity, played by George Mackay as Mick Jagger by way of Freddy Krueger. The movie’s jagged narrative and expressionistic asides minimize Kelly’s robberies...

In his Vietnam War quasi-memoir “The Things We Carried,” writer Tim O’Brien posits the idea that a storyteller must exercise a measure of creative license to accurately capture the essence of history. He theorizes an “emotional truth,” a close relative of Werner Herzog’s so-called “ecstatic truth,” under which the account of events may be tampered with in order to more expressionistically replicate the experience of being there. Peter Carey subscribed to that very notion with his 2000 novel “True History of the Kelly Gang,” which freely rearranged the details surrounding 19th-century Australian bushranger Ned Kelly to mold his living self into the larger-than-life figure that his legacy suggests today.

Back in 1970, Tony Richardson’s “Ned Kelly” hit upon a neat idea: What if you got an honest-to-God rock star, Mick Jagger, to play Australia’s most notorious 19th-century folk hero? A neat idea is all it was, though, and the listless, unconfidently acted movie that resulted was duly forgotten. Nearly half a century later, however, Justin Kurzel’s thrilling new take on the legend gives Kelly some glam-rock swagger without any need for stunt casting. Lithe and volatile and recklessly stylized to the hilt, “True History of the Kelly Gang” has moves like Jagger, but a head still teeming with language and history. Adapted from Peter Carey’s Man Booker-winning 2000 novel, Kurzel’s roughhousing, ripely acted interpretation does full justice to the book’s rugged dirt-poetry vernacular and rich biographical particulars, while staging Kelly’s criminal rise and fall as a vision all its own: a wildly gyrating sensory assault of blood,...

IFC Films has purchased North American rights to “The True History of the Kelly Gang,” a historical drama that stars Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, and Charlie Hunnam. The film is premiering at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and was considered to be one of the hotter projects looking for distribution.
The film is adapted from Peter Carey’s Booker Prize–winning novel of the same name and follows the exploits of the Australian outlaw. In his 25 years on Earth, Kelly burned bright, becoming an outback version of Jesse James or Robin Hood. His career of crime has inspired past films, one, an early aughts offering that starred the late Heath Ledger, and another, a 1970 production with Mick Jagger at his Mick Jagger-iest.
The sale of “The True History of the Kelly Gang” is in the seven figure range. Justin Kurzel directed the picture from a script by Shaun Grant.

Rereleased after 25 years, this literary work about a mute woman in 19th-century New Zealand remains full of extraordinary images and enigmas
