Wyoming is headed to West End. Brokeback Mountain — Annie Proulx’s short story made popular by the 2005 film — is getting a stage adaptation set to premiere in London, starring Lucas Hedges and Mike Faist as closeted cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist. It marks both actors’ West End debuts.
Variety reports that the West End adaptation of Brokeback Mountain is slated to premiere at the venue @sohoplace, and will play from May 10th through August 12th, 2023. Although there’s no Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in this go around, Proulx said in a statement that the “script is fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments,” which seems like a promising co-sign.
The play Brokeback Mountain was written by Ashley Robinson, with songs by Dan Gillespie Sells. Jonathan Butterell directs, and it’s produced by Nica Burns with Adam Blanshay Productions, Lambert Jackson Productions...

BAFTA-nominated Mike Faist and Oscar-nominated actor Lucas Hedges will star in a London stage adaptation of Annie Proulx’s short story Brokeback Mountain.
The production is described as a play with music and will run at the Sohoplace Theatre in the West End for a 12-week season beginning May 10.
Theater owner and producer Nica Burns stressed that the play is based on Proulx’s short story originally published in the New Yorker in 1997 and not on Ang Lee’s acclaimed 2005 film that starred Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Faist, who landed a BAFTA nom for West Side Story, will play the part of Jack Twist. Hedges, whose Oscar nom was for Manchester By the Sea in 2016, will play Ennis Del Mar.

Composer Dan Gillespie Sells says he wanted to tell the story of young Jamie Campbell in “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” because the central protagonist is heroic and not victimized.
In the film — now streaming on Amazon Prime Video — Jamie (Max Harwood) is a 16-year-old who dreams of becoming a drag queen. Sells, who worked on the music for the West End production and movie, says, “There are none of these victim tropes that we often get in LGBT stories.” Instead, it is a hopeful and inspiring tale of a character confident in himself.

This review of “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” was first published after the film played at Outfest Los Angeles 2021.
If you were among those left with a sour aftertaste following last year’s “The Prom,” a star-studded treacle about clueless adults helping small-town lesbian teens, then “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” may come as a welcome palate cleanser. The high-spirited “be yourself” celebration, adapted from the British stage musical, is similarly saccharine, but the sweetener in this one has a notably less artificial flavor.
A delightful if predictable display of unabashed queer joy, the film brings back director Jonathan Butterell, who developed the theater version with musician Dan Gillespie Sells and writer Tom MacRae (also the screenwriter). That original production was in turn based on the subjects from the documentary “Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.”

Unlike most of the kids in his class, 16-year-old Jamie New knows what he wants to be when he grows up: a drag queen. And unlike most of the fabulous aspiring female impersonators who’ve strutted on-screen before him, he has surprisingly few obstacles in his way. Jamie has an understanding mom, a supportive best friend and a school full of closed-minded students who don’t take much to come around, which makes this glittery big-screen adaptation of 2017’s well-liked West End tuner an unusually festive affair. “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is to queer teens what “High School Musical” was to, well, their more closeted peers: an upbeat, be-yourself pep rally for self-questioning young adult audiences.
Pre-pandemic, the feel-good musical was snapped up by Fox for big-screen release, where it would have followed in the footsteps of the studio’s “Love, Simon” — a second unapologetically gay, refreshingly nonjudgmental coming-out and...

“Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” is that rare gem: a British film with global appeal and not a corset in sight. Or at least, not where you’d expect to see one.
“I think what we’ve always tried to do at Warp Films, whether it’s the half a million quid films that we started off making or [what we do] now,” says Warp co-founder Peter Carlton, a producer on the movie. “They can be locally inspired stories, but they’ve always got to feel big, they’re not going to feel parochial.”
“So that was always the thing from the get-go: we want to make something that stays true to where it’s from, but is as ambitious as possible.”
That’s certainly the case with “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” a musical about a 16-year-old boy from the North East of England whose dream is to become a drag queen. Starring Richard E. Grant...

Outfest, the Los Angeles LGBTQ+ film festival, kicked off its opening night joyously with the premiere of “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie,” the film adaptation of the West End show.
The film’s star, Max Harwood, said having its premiere at Outfest is a dream come true. “I’m from Basingstoke in England, which is just south of London, and I’ve never been to L.A. before, so this is absolutely a dream,” Harwood said.
Alongside Harwood, the film stars Sarah Lancashire, Lauren Patel, Shobna Gulati, Ralph Ineson, Adeel Akhtar, Samuel Bottomley, Sharon Horgan and Richard E. Grant.
“Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” follows Jamie New (Harwood), a 16-year-old who doesn’t quite fit in. Jamie’s dream has always been to become a drag queen, and with the help of his supportive mother (Lancashire), best friend (Patel) and former drag queen turned mentor Loco Chanelle (Grant), he finally gives it a shot.

Amazon Prime Video has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming musical adaptation of ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’.
Inspired by true events, the film follows Jamie New (Harwood), a teenager from Sheffield, who dreams of life on stage. While his classmates plan their livelihoods after they leave school, Jamie contemplates revealing his secret career ambition to become a fierce and proud drag queen. His best friend Pritti (Patel) and his loving mum (Lancashire) shower him with endless support, while local drag legend Miss Loco Chanelle (Grant) mentors him toward his debut stage performance. But Jamie also has to contend with an unsupportive father (Ineson), an uninspired careers advisor (Horgan), and some ignorant school kids who attempt to rain on his sensational parade. In rousing and colourful musical numbers, Jamie and his community inspire one another to overcome prejudice, be more accepting, and step out of the darkness into the spotlight.

Do the Oscars hate comedies? If you look over their 92-year history, with so many infectious films and performances ignored in favor of more “serious” pieces of art, the assumption could be made. This year, faced with the Covid-19 pandemic, and with theaters not being the normal avenue to watch films, moviegoers and industry professionals are viewing releases more differently than ever.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. pushed the Golden Globes to Feb. 28, 2021, the last day of the eligibility window for the Oscars. With their best comedy or musical designation, the Globes can highlight the laughs in a year that’s seen so much tragedy. “I want to be a drag queen…when I close my eyes it’s all I ever see” confesses Max Harwood as the titular character in “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.” Though the pandemic has pushed big-screen adaptations of the musicals “In the Heights” and “West Side Story” out to far flung release dates, this infectious British tuner is ready to vogue and waack its way into cinemas just in time for this year’s Oscar race. You can check out the newly released trailer for the film above.
Jamie’s story has had a long journey to get this point. The musical was inspired by true life events depicted in Jenny Poplewell’s 2011 documentary “Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.” Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae set the tale to songs for a stage musical adaptation which was a hit on London’s West End. It nabbed five Olivier nominations in 2017, including Best New Musical.
