One wouldn’t think that a schlocky slasher series about killer puppets would produce more than a dozen films across three decades, let alone sequels that are still being discussed today, yet here we are getting deep in the weeds over the straight-to-video sequel bliss that is Puppet Master 4. Puppet Master is easily the most successful property to come out of Charles Band’s Full Moon Features, best known for movies like Castle Freak and Subspecies, as well as more low-hanging fruit like The Gingerdead Man and The Evil Bong series. Puppet Master falls comfortably between these two extremes. After a satisfying initial trilogy that chronicles the grandiose revenge scheme of a persecuted toymaker, Puppet Master–like many long-running horror series–is forced to ask, “What’s next?”
In Puppet Master’s case, the franchise strangely pivots towards the rehabilitation of Blade, Leech Woman, Six-Shooter, and the rest of these...

As of this writing, there are nine movies in the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" series, and sussing out their chronology is one of the more herculean tasks a horror fan may find themselves undertaking. Like the "Halloween" movies, the "Texas Chainsaw" flicks abide by a choose-your-own-adventure structure, with some movies following a definite timeline, and others merrily ignoring previous chapters. Confoundingly, several of them have almost identical titles. The only consistent element of "Texas Chainsaw" is that they are all horrifically violent and unbearably disturbing. But, y'know, in a good way.
The premise of the "Texas Chainsaw" movies is simple. Thanks to rampant American poverty, entire families have been forced to live off the grid in remote, rural parts of the country. One of these families, largely inbred and blissfully detached from conventional morality, has taken to kidnapping passersby, stripping them for meat, and using their skin and bones as construction materials.

Despite the decline in theatrical horror releases during the 1990s, the direct-to-video side of the genre was still thriving. So much so that something like Jeff Burr’s Night of the Scarecrow understandably slipped through the cracks after its unnoticed home-video premiere in ‘96. Even aficionados of this regularly dismissed decade of horror might not be aware of the movie’s existence. Nevertheless, longtime fans still consider this to be one of the more notable offerings of scarecrow horror.
It’s not hard to figure out why Night of the Scarecrow got so lost in the shuffle of ‘90s Dtv horror. Jeff Burr claimed only around 12,000 units were shipped back in the bygone days of video shops. Yet, if you came across this movie’s alluring box art in the horror aisle, you couldn’t be blamed for wanting to take a closer look. The alternative artwork — the titular, sickle-wielding villain...

Jeff Burr, director of “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” “From a Whisper to a Scream” and “Straight Into Darkness,” has died. He was 60.
Director-writer Jim Wynorski shared the news of Burr’s death on Facebook, writing that he “passed away last night [Oct. 10] in his sleep.”
Burr helmed New Line’s “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain in the 1990 installment. He later directed several entries in the “Pumpkinhead” and “Puppet Master” franchises, including “Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings” (1993), “Puppet Master 4” (1993), “Puppet Master 5” (1995) and “Puppet Master: Blitzkrief Massacre” (2018).
Burr was born in Aurora, Ohio, on July 18, 1963, and grew up in Dalton, Ga. He attended USC, but dropped out after his third year alongside fellow director Kevin Meyer to finish their American civil war short “Divided We Fall.” His feature-length directorial debut was 1987’s “From a Whisper to a Scream,” starring Vincent Price, Clu Gulager and Terry Kiser.

Jeff Burr, a horror director whose resume includes the Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Puppet Master, Pumpkinhead and Stepfather franchises, died Tuesday at age 60 in Dalton, Georgia, from complications from a stroke, his friend, actor Eric Spudic, confirmed.
Burr was not the first choice for New Line’s Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), but came aboard after others dropped out. The R-rated fim grossed $5.8 million on a $2 million budget.
That established his credentials in the genre. From there, he directed Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993) and Puppet Master 4 (1993), Puppet Master 5 (1994) and Puppet Master: Blitzkrieg Massacre (2018).
His other films incuded Eddie Presley (1992), a film that has Quentin Tarantino and Bruce Campbell playing asylum attendants, and cowrote and directed the World War II drama Straight Into Darkness (2004).

Jeff Burr, the horror specialist who directed Vincent Price in one of his last movies and entries in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Puppet Master, Pumpkinhead and Stepfather franchises, has died. He was 60.
Burr died Tuesday in his sleep in Dalton, Georgia, of apparent complications from a stroke, his longtime friend, actor Eric Spudic, told The Hollywood Reporter.
After several other directors had dropped out, Burr came aboard at the last minute to helm New Line’s Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), this installment starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain.
He said it took 11 tries before the MPAA would sign off on an ‘R’ rating for the film, which grossed $5.8 million on a $2 million budget.
Burr went on to direct Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993) and Puppet Master 4 (1993), Puppet Master 5 (1994) and Puppet Master: Blitzkrieg Massacre (2018).

We got some sad news today as we have learned that director Jeff Burr, best known for Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, Stepfather II, Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings, and more, has died. He was just 60 years old.
Like many future horror directors, Jeff Burr grew up reading horror magazines like Famous Monsters of Filmland and making his own Super-8 movies. He later attended the University of Southern California but dropped out after his third year to finish his American Civil War drama Divided We Fall with co-director Kevin Meyer. His second feature found him entering the world of horror, and he scored a superstar of the genre to star in it: The one and only Vincent Price.

Director Jack Hill’s 1967 film Spider Baby or, the Maddest Story Ever Told (watch it Here) – which boasts a cast that includes Lon Chaney Jr. and Sid Haig – ranks up there as one of my all-time favorites. Rob Zombie clearly took some inspiration from Spider Baby when he was making House of 1000 Corpses, and back in 2007 we heard that a remake was in the works, coming from the Night of the Living Dead 3D team of director Jeff Broadstreet and writer Robert Valding. The one didn’t end up making it into production… but a couple weeks ago, it was confirmed that filming had just wrapped on a version of the remake that’s coming our way from Scs Entertainment and director Dustin Ferguson (Cocaine Cougar). Now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have gotten their hands on a trailer for the Spider Baby remake, and you can check it...

Director Dustin Ferguson’s remake of Jack Hill’s 1967 cult classic horror movie Spider Baby has wrapped principal photography in L.A. Says Ferguson:
We’ve reached an exhilarating milestone with the completion of the ‘Spider Baby’ remake, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have worked with an extraordinary ensemble of genre stars such as Robert Mukes, Beverly Washburn, Brinke Stevens, and Ron Chaney. This Sunday is Father’s Day and Bloody Disgusting’s Screambox streaming service is celebrating by streaming all three original The Stepfather movies from the ’80s and ’90s!
The trilogy began with 1987’s The Stepfather, directed by Joseph Ruben and starring Terry O’Quinn. In the original classic, which was later remade in 2009, “After murdering his entire family, a man marries a widow with a teenage daughter in another town and prepares to do it all over again.”
Two years later, Stepfather II – also known as Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy – was released into theaters in 1989. Jeff Burr directed, with Terry O’Quinn returning to star.
In Stepfather II, “After escaping the insane asylum in which he was incarcerated, Jerry Blake (Terry O’Quinn) impersonates a marriage counselor and manages to win over a patient (Meg Foster) and her young son (Jonathan Brandis).”

A couple months ago, we looked back at the 1988 film Pumpkinhead with an episode of our Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series. Now we’re moving on to an examination of the 1994 sequel Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings (watch it Here) – and since this isn’t exactly one of the most popular sequels around, we’re covering it in an episode of our The Black Sheep video series. To find out why we think Pumpkinhead II deserves more appreciation, check out the video embedded above!

After 35 years, another gang of teens robs the cabin of an old witch. Using some blood and a spell taken from her house, the...

A new episode of the Black Sheep video series has just been released, and in this one we’re directing some praise toward an underappreciated entry in Full Moon’s Puppet Master franchise. That entry is the 1993 release Puppet Master 4 (watch it Here), and you can find out why we think it deserves more respect by checking out the video embedded above!

Payson, Jo Duffy, and Douglas Aarniokoski, Puppet Master 4 was shot back-to-back with the following year’s Puppet Master 5. After missing out on Halloween III, iconic slasher Michael Myers made his triumphant return to the screen in 1988’s Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers – and you can here all about that in the video found Here. Halloween 4 had a shocking cliffhanger ending. Our little heroine Jamie Lloyd picked up a pair of scissors and attacked her adoptive mother, seeming to have inherited the evil killer instinct of her uncle Michael Myers. Some fans were disappointed that the following year’s Halloween 5 (get it Here) brushed aside the idea of Jamie becoming a killer. Maybe they would have been satisfied with the alternative script for the sequel that was written by Shem Bitterman, Halloween 5: The Killer Inside Me. That’s the unmade Halloween sequel we’re digging into with the new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Unmade Horror Movie video series, which you can...

While the 1970s and 1980s were strong decades for independent horror filmmaking, the 1990s proved to be a somewhat interesting time, as there seemed to be an overall tendency for this realm of the industry to be focused on making sequels and creating franchises out of ’80s horror hits, with a few landmark indie horror projects in the mix as well. And since sequels were so dominant at that time, I thought it only made sense for us to start there for this look back on the history of ’90s indie horror cinema.
After the 1980s proved to be a great time for indie horror, where so many movies ended up being successful due to a combination of theatrical releases and the increasing popularity of home video, it feels like in the decade that followed, many producers working in the independent realm wanted to capitalize on those successes by turning...

Sequels are always a tricky proposition, and one that most fans meet halfway with more than a little trepidation; we want something new, while still retaining the qualities or spirit that originally drew us in. And then there’s Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy (1989), which tells the same familial terror tale, but in such a way that we don’t mind the repetition—as a matter of fact, we embrace it.
Well, I do, anyway; there are some folks that dismiss Stepfather II as a gorier clone of its predecessor, which is simply not true. It’s also much funnier. Critics naturally had their woodworking tools ready to chisel away at the goodwill the first film had accrued, and many claimed it merely rehashed the events of the first with a bloodier perspective. Given a limited release in theaters, it brought in $1.5 million—not terrible for a limited release and a supposed “rehash.

Ever since seeing Creepshow (1982) when it first arrived on video, I’ve been enamored with anthology films; reaching back to Amicus’ ‘60s and ‘70s treasures like Tales from the Crypt (1972) all the way up to Epic Pictures’ Tales of Halloween (2015), omnibuses scratch a very particular itch for this viewer. Falling somewhere in the middle of my terrorline is From a Whisper to a Scream (1987), a proud and nasty addition to the sub-genre. This bugger does not mess around.
Released by Moviestore Entertainment stateside and by Cineplex-Odeon up here in Canada the following year, From a Whisper to a Scream (Aka The Offspring, which is what I knew it as) made back its $ 1.1 million budget plus a few dollars more, and the film received mixed reviews from critics in its limited release. If you’re still pining for more Texas Chainsaw action after the easily forgotten Leatherface, Warner Archive brings good news. As reported the other week, the company has confirmed that, yes, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III is headed to Blu-ray in 2018, and now we have a few more details on what to expect.
There’s currently no mention of an exact release date, but fans of Jeff Burr’s criminally underrated horror sequel will soon be able to take home the 1990 cult favorite. Angled as the third entry into the time-honored Texas Chainsaw franchise, Massacre III was also the first instalment to come by way of New Line, which was recently responsible for transforming Stephen King’s It into a global phenomenon.

Moviegoers learned that "the saw is family" when Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III was released in theaters back in 1990. Now, over a quarter of a century later, Warner Archive announced that the third entry in Tobe Hooper's seminal horror franchise will finally be coming to Blu-ray in the Us.
On a slideshow (see below) posted to Twitter, Warner Archive revealed that Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III will be released on Blu-ray sometime in 2018. A specific release date and special features have yet to be announced, but we'll be sure to keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are revealed. In the meantime, for those unfamiliar with the third entry in the Texas Chainsaw franchise, we have the official synopsis (via Blu-ray.com) and trailer below.

When you think of Quentin Tarantino, classic films like “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Django Unchained” certainly come to mind. But what about the critically reviled “Saturday Night Live” sketch adaptation “It’s Pat”? Or the Michael Bay Alcatraz action movie “The Rock”? Tarantino’s fingerprints have been all over the movies ever since his breakout debut in 1992, and some of his projects are way more bizarre than others.

With the impossibly fun Tales of Halloween now in wide release, it seems like as good a time as any to dig deep into one of my favorite subgenres of horror: the anthology film. From Tales from the Crypt to Tales from the Darkside to Tales from the Hood, the horror anthology offers something for everyone. And apparently that something is “tales.”
In speaking with most of the directors from Tales of Halloween, there was consensus in their feelings about what makes for a great anthology film: singularity of vision and consistency of quality. Both can be difficult to achieve, as the format practically dictates that some segments be stronger than others or express a different voice. But when an anthology can achieve even one of those things, there’s the potential for real horror movie magic.

The casting continues for the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface, with one familiar and one not-so-familiar face now added to the roster. Lili Taylor, with her newfound horror mojo following The Conjuring, will be young Leatherface's mom Vera Sawyer. And newcomer Vanessa Grasse has nabbed the female lead as Lizzy, a nurse at a mental institution who's kidnapped and taken on a road trip by inmates, one of whom is our boy before the mask. The new Chainsaw film follows 2013's hapless Texas Chainsaw 3D as the eighth film in the scrappy franchise. It's the second to be called Leatherface, following Jeff Burr's third instalment in 1990 starring a young Viggo Mortensen. It's also the second attempt at a prequel, after Jonathan Liebesman's Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning in 2006.Like Liebesman's film, the new Leatherface is following the hulking killer's early years in the 1970s, although in...

Genre fans have a very light week of home entertainment releases to look forward to on Tuesday, April 28th. Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

Scream Factory’s Blu-ray release of Pumpkinhead, was one of their most impressive releases of the year (so far). That review will be up this evening. In the meantime today Scream Factory announces their release of Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings, to be released on Blu-ray on October 28th. We all knew it was coming, but now we know exactly when, we have the cover art, and we have a list of the bonus content. This isn’t going to be quite as extra-heavy as their release of the previous film, but I have no doubts that it will be a solid release regardless. Plus, how cool is it to have the sequel sitting right next to the original on your carefully-organized shelves? Produced by Brian Yuzna, the warped individual behind the brutal class satire/mutant cannibalism jaunt Society, and starring that rubber-faced icon of the midnight movie, Jeffrey Combs, this remains one of the crowning glories of 80s cult film-making. Re-Animator's essentially an outlandish, sillier take on Hp Lovecraft’s spin on the Frankenstein mad-scientist story, and Combs, who you’ll undoubtedly know from such box-office juggernauts as Doctor Mordrid and Cellar Dweller (reviewed here next month), plays brilliant-if-misguided medical student Herbert West.

Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings was originally released in the UK at a time when I was heavily getting into horror yet was, legally, still too young to rent 18-rated titles from the local video shop (a shop which to this day I credit with the formative years of my movie tastes). It was also at a time when Jeff Burr was being hailed, at least in some corners of the UK and Us horror press, as the future of the genre. After all, he had helmed the fan-favourite Vincent Price-starring horror anthology From a Whisper to a Scream and then the very successful sequel The Stepfather 2, before hitting the “big time” as director on the third film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise.
