It’s time for another episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? video series, and with this one we’re looking at Scream 4 (watch it Here), the one entry in the Scream franchise that had a surprising lack of success at the box office. The audience didn’t come back for this one, which was released eleven years after the previous film, but did return for the more recent sequels. To hear all about Scream 4 and its bad luck, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Wes Craven from a screenplay by Kevin Williamson – which received uncredited rewrites from Ehren Kruger and Paul Harris Boardman – Scream 4 has the following synopsis: It has been many years since the Ghostface Killer cut a deadly path through the town of Woodsboro. In order to get over the trauma of those horrific events, Sidney Prescott has written a self-help book.

Whether it’s Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan or Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, almost every horror franchise out there has a skeleton or two in the closet, i.e. a sequel so poorly conceived that it’s been all but erased from memory by fans. The Hellraiser movies are no exception. Though some might point to the fourth entry, 1996’s Hellraiser: Bloodline, as the bête noire of many a Pinhead fan, that movie gets a pass on account of the studio interference and directorial changes that saw a potentially inventive entry, set partially in futuristic space, rendered into an incoherent, but still at times inventive, mess.
No, the nadir instead came with 2011’s Hellraiser: Revelations, a sequel made in a matter of weeks to ensure Dimension FIlms retained the rights to the series. A film so horrifyingly bad that to watch it more than once would border on sadomasochism.

Sin and Damnation – How Scott Derrickson’s Underrated ‘Hellraiser: Inferno’ Rises Above Expectations
At the recent Silver Scream Con, I was surprised to hear Hellraiser star Doug Bradley remark, “The only one in the series I feel doesn’t work is Inferno, for various reasons.” I had always considered the 2000 effort one of the franchise’s stronger offerings, but it had been a while since I revisited the series, so I thought it may not hold up as well as I remembered.
As I’m working my way through the series ahead of David Bruckner‘s reboot, which drops October 7 on Hulu, I can confirm my support for the fifth installment. I have no doubt that Bradley has his reasons for disliking the film – it being the first installment to be released straight to video no doubt required adjustments, not to mention his minuscule screen time as Pinhead – but, even with its shortcomings, I think Hellraiser: Inferno is better than he gives it credit for.

“Archive 81” will not receive a second season on Netflix, TheWrap has learned.
The series, from creator Rebecca Sonnenshine, starred Mamoudou Athie as video archivist Dan Turner, who was restoring tapes in the present, originally shot by Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) in 1994 at the mysterious Visser apartment building.
In different timelines, both Dan and Melody uncover disturbing secrets about a destructive, demon-worshipping cult.
The series, which costarred Martin Donovan, Evan Jonigkeit, Julia Chan, Ariana Neal and Matt McGorry, was loosely inspired by the podcast of the same name.
Sonnenshine created the series and served as showrunner and executive producer. James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster also executive produced with Rebecca Thomas, Antoine Douaihy and Paul Harris Boardman.
The series, which debuted in January, ended on a cliffhanger that left Dan’s fate up in the air.

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to move forward with a second season of Archive 81, Deadline has learned. The news comes two months after the the Jan. 14 debut of the horror drama starring Mamoudou Athie and Dina Shihabi.
TV Cancellations Photo Gallery: Shows Ending In 2022 & Beyond
The cancellation is somewhat surprising because Archive 81 did break into Nielsen and Netflix’s weekly Top 10 ratings for originals, and it also briefly shot to No. 1 on Netflix in the U.S. before being dethroned by the return of Ozark. With the streamer laser-focused on analyzing viewing versus cost in its renewal decisions, the number of eyeballs Archive 81 drew possibly did not meet the threshold Netflix had set for the series based on its budget.

Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming horror series “Archive 81,” which draws upon nostalgia for the videotape era of the 1990s to weave a chilling tale that plays out across dual timelines.
Loosely inspired by the podcast of the same name, “Archive 81” begins in present day with a character named Dan (Mamoudou Athie) being hired by a shadowy organization to restore video tapes that were damaged in a fire 25 years ago. As Dan restores the tapes in a remote location (“for his security” he’s assured), he witnesses the story of a woman named Melody (Dina Shihabi) who begins videotaping residents of an odd apartment building to create an oral history, only to discover something incredibly strange about the building and its inhabitants.

Just as Disney Plus, HBO Max and Amazon Prime Video are revving up their fantasy, horror and sci-fi series slates for winter 2021-2022 debuts, Netflix is touting the abundance of genre series headed to the streamer.
Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, announced premiere details for a slew of “geeky” shows, as well as returning fan-favorites like “Locke & Key” and “The Umbrella Academy.”
“In my ten years at Netflix, it’s been thrilling to see the dropped jaws, the all-caps tweets/the hilarious memes and the passionate theories inspired by these once-in-a-lifetime moments,” Friedlander wrote in a blog post. “Genre stories have the power to transport us to new universes like the Upside Down in ‘Stranger Things,’ teach us new vocabulary like ‘The Witcher’ and, most importantly, unite us in our shared love of sci-fi, horror, fantasy, anime and everything in between.

To be clear, voters weren't asked for honorable mentions specifically; but a handful felt strongly enough about their "bubbling under" choices to list them anyway (which proved extraordinarily useful in helping break ties on the Top 100). See below for a full listing, as well as explanations from Bloody-Disgusting founder/editor-in-chief Brad Miska and director Corin Hardy ("The Hallow") on why they voted the way they did. B-movie classic The Blob is getting another remake. Why? I couldn’t tell you, but here we are. Goldcrest Films is moving forward with the project, which the studio has set The Expendables 2 helmer Simon West to direct.
The 1958 cult classic, directed by Irvin Yeaworth, starred a young Steve McQueen as a teenager whose small Pennsylvania hometown is unexpectedly threatened when a gelatinous alien life-form emerges from a meteor and begins to consume the townfolk, growing larger in size with every new victim and oozing forward with no indication of stopping.
The Blob, though received with mixed reviews at the time of its release, is now held up as a prime example of B-movie entertainment. It birthed a sequel, Larry Hagman’s 1972 Beware! The Blob, and was previously remade in 1988 by Chuck Russell. Producers on this remake are Richard Saperstein and Brian Witten.

Once you’re absorbed by its terror, you can’t even scream. The slimy mass that is the Blob first thrilled audiences when it took on Steve McQueen on the big screen in 1958. It next oozed into cinemas via the 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob, before being reborn in a 1988 remake directed by Chuck Russell and co-written by Frank Darabont. Proving that it’s still a relentless alien amoeba, 1958’s The Blob is being remade once again.
Goldcrest Films is moving forward with a remake of The Blob, with Simon West (The Expendables 2, Con Air) lined up for the director’s chair and shooting slated to begin this summer. Sometimes it can be easy to dismiss a horror film simply based on the premise. By now we have seen nearly every type or person and inanimate object possessed by some sort of demon or demonic presence. However, all genres are just as guilty of sticking with stereotypical tropes. The key is how those tropes are executed. Director Scott Derrickson’s latest film Deliver Us From Evil is far from groundbreaking, but it at least subverts expectations enough to create something worth watching.
In many ways Deliver Us From Evil is a crime drama with a few occasional supernatural elements. Eric Bana plays Sarchie, a veteran police officer with a special talent for solving disturbing crimes. His partner, played by...

The idea of demonic possession has terrified people around the world for hundreds of years. The idea that something not of this world is wearing your skin, living your life, while you’re nothing but a helpless passenger in your own skin, is nothing short of a veritable nightmare. Although a topic of religious study for a plethora of faiths, demonic possession has always been a favourite for Hollywood films. So it’s always nice when a movie can take the time-tested tropes and turn out something fresh. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case with Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us From Evil.
The film stars Eric Bana as New York police officer Ralph Sarchie, who finds himself uncovering an insidious demonic plan. A curse that’s destroyed the lives of three soldiers from the Middle East,...

Chicago – “Deliver Us from Evil” is director Scott Derrickson’s second foray into possession horror. His first, the excellent “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” was taut, thoughtful and offered some truly unsettling demon scares.
..it still ranks as one of the most important and best of the new crop of possession/devil films it helped kickstart into being with their box office numbers. Like Emily Rose this film is very loosely based on actual accounts. In this case, the accounts of retired policeman Ralph Sarchie who left the NYPD to become a demonologist eventually writing the book from which the film gets its title.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana) is a cop clearly troubled by his job. Witness to the worst society has to offer, and beginning to bend under the psychic weight, he gets by on his wits, occasionally following up on hunches that put him in the crosshairs.

So, basically, it's "CSI: 666." Makes sense. Jerry Bruckheimer doesn't really do horror films. When you look back at his long and storied career as a producer, you see several recurring things, but horror seems like it's never really been part of his cinematic diet. I guess you could argue that some of the "Pirates" movies have some creepy elements, but those films are ultimately family adventure movies with a healthy dose of comedy thrown in. So what attracted him to the story of Detective Ralph Sarchie, a real-life NYC officer who gets involved in a case that subjects him to some insane supernatural attention? Hard to tell, but the finished film, directed by Scott Derrickson and adapted from Sarchie's non-fiction book by Derrickson and Paul Harris Boardman, plays like a police procedural first and foremost. It's a dark and grimy film, and while I think it's juggling a whole lot of cliches,...

"Deliver Us From Evil" is the latest sweaty summer offering from Scott Derrickson, the co-writer/director of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" and "Sinister." Eric Bana stars as Ralph Sarchie, a special ops police officer in one of the most dangerous precincts in Manhattan. Sarchie and his partner (played by Joel McHale) are used to seeing the worst that humans can do to each other, but some of the crimes on their beat have a supernatural flavor to them. Enter Father Mendoza (Edgar Ramirez), a priest who smokes and drinks and performs exorcisms. Sarchie's no believer, but when things start going bump in his house -- and threatening his wife (Olivia Munn) and child -- that's another story.
Derrickson and co-writer Paul Harris Boardman were inspired by the real Ralph Sarchie's tales of supernatural stuff he saw during his career as a NYPD, as detailed in his book "Beware the Night.

"If these boys are innocent, would you want three more families to lose their children too?"
Based on a compelling true tale of murder and moral corruption that shocked America almost as much as a Janet Jackson nipslip, The Devil's Knot should have proven a perfect fit between auteur and subject matter. Yet the themes of loss and familial tragedy that Atom Egoyan explored so effectively in The Sweet Hereafter are squandered as The Devil's Knot veers awkwardly between docudrama realism and aesthetic expressionism.
Egoyan's film charts the horrific murders in 1993 of three young boys in Arkansas and the subsequent arrest of three teenagers, whose interest in Satanism and heavy metal appears to compel the authorities into labeling them guilty. The staggering inconsistencies in the prosecution's...

The story of the West Memphis Three is brought to the screen in unsatisying fashion by director Atom Egoyan...
The Devil's Knot is a film with a lot of actors acting in it. It's not something we'd ordinarily mention first up in a review, save for the fact that here, you simply can't help but notice it. Some of the acting is really rather good, but, after a horrific, impactful opening 20 minutes, you're never left in any doubt that this is a dramatic take on a thoroughly nasty real life collection of events.
For the film dramatises the West Memphis Three story - so hauntingly dealt with in the likes of Paradise Lost and West Of Memphis - which saw three boys brutally murdered, and the clamour for justice overtaken by a clamour for legal retribution.
Director Atom Egoyan makes no attempt to obscure which side of the story he sits on,...

The 1993 murders of three young boys in West Memphis, Arkansas, has been explored time and time again, in documentaries like HBO’s Paradise Lost trilogy and Peter Jackson’s West of Memphis, but pop culture can’t seem to leave the sensational case alone. The question of whether Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. were actually guilty of the savage crimes seems to destined never to be definitively answered, though most films about the case have emphasized how tenuous links between the trio and the murders actually were.
Devil’s Knot, Atom Egoyan’s dramatization of the investigation and subsequent trials, features bankable Hollywood stars like Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon, and that star power makes this retelling more likely to appeal to the masses than the documentary coverage. That’s why it’s so unfortunate that Egoyan never manages to do right by his powerful source material.

I’m not going to delude myself and think that we’re going to start a revolution, and that Urban Legends: Final Cut will somehow surpass Halloween as the better film. But just hear me out; it’s a much better film than people have ever given it credit to be.
I was surfing around Netflix and saw it had been added; I own the DVD but as is with our age of digital gratification I popped it on anyways. As the credits started I remembered back to when I first saw it. The year was 2000, and I was looking through the DVD selection at my local Ames; a chain long since extinct, and I spotted it. I didn’t even have internet at the time- (go ahead and judge), and had heard nothing about a sequel to Urban Legends. I bought it sight unseen after reading the description, for a modest $24.99. If you’re dreading the glut of action/superhero blockbusters set to arrive this year, you can rest easy knowing that there are plenty of promising horror films on the horizon as well. Deliver Us From Evil, from Scott Derrickson, the director of Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, is perhaps my most anticipated, primarily because it looks to blend a demonic possession plotline with the dark and brooding feel of a cop drama.
The international trailer for the film, which Sony dropped earlier today, recycles some footage from the absolutely nerve-wracking first trailer while also weaving in some terrifying new clips of the hideous, malevolent presence that cop Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana) finds himself up against. Check it out below:

"What if they did itc" "What if they didn'tc" Oh man, now that's deep. A new trailer for Devil's Knot, which Image Entertainment ponied up some cash to purchase and distribute for some reason, has arrived and it pretty much sums up the entire movie, not that there is much to sum up. If you know the story of the West Memphis Three then you probably know more than the whole of Devil's Knot. Directed by Atom Egoyan with a screenplay by Paul Harris Boardman and Scott Derrickson, the film stars Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon and tells the story of three children that were murdered in Arkansas and the three boys charged with the crime. As I noted in my review from the Toronto Film Festival last September, this is the "Cliff's Notes version of the events that lead up to the conviction of Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, Jr.

Eric Bana takes front and centre in Deliver Us From Evil, marking the latest in the low-budget horror genre, hitting our screens later this year.
Most films like this tend to open either at the start of the year or sometime around Halloween, but Screen Gems and Sony have opted for a summer bow, which suggests they’ve got a lot of faith in the crime horror/thriller.
With just a few more months to go, we’ve got a handful of images to share, giving us a look at Bana and co-star Édgar Ramírez leading the charge.
