Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s involvement in Warner Bros.’ Shazam film has been in the ether for some time now, and almost since the project’s inception, the wrestler-turned-movie star has been attached to a role in the big-screen adaptation. However, what wasn’t always clear was which role the actor would play; would it be the protagonist and titular hero, or the more ominous part of Black Adam, the movie’s anti-hero?
In the end, Johnson announced that he was indeed going to suit up as the latter persona, and during the press rounds for the soon-to-be-released Furious 7, the actor spoke to Digital Spy about the path that led him to Black Adam and ultimately why he chose the supervillain over the out-and-out good guy.
“Ultimately I felt that with all due respect to Shazam, Billy Batson and the mythology that I love and has been with me for almost ten years now,...

Dwayne Johnson has been circling a Shazam movie for some time, but soon his dream will become a reality when he suits up to play Black Adam in the DC Comics movie.
Digital Spy spoke to The Rock during press rounds for Fast & Furious 7 to discuss the upcoming superhero film, and what made him choose to play villain Black Adam over the heroic Shazam.
Johnson is so far the only cast member confirmed for the blockbuster, which will be written by Bill Birch, Geoff Johns and Darren Lemke.
Shazam will arrive in cinemas in April 2019, with Black Adam potentially cropping up in earlier DC-based film Justice League.
Fast & Furious 7 opens in cinemas worldwide on April 3.

So who's confident to see the Captain Marvel movie finally get made? At least it's been heading to us under the same director, Pete Segal, for about 3 years so that's a good sign, right? Scribe Bill Birch also sounds confident his treatment written in partnership with Geoff Johns will make the grade. Or at least it'll be his own thing, since he mentions disregarding every previous treatment made for the film. "Geoff and I are in the thick of it, creating a kickass update that still...

Television actor turned writer Bill Birch has been hired by Warner Bros to take a swing at Shazam, a DC Comics adaptation of the character Captain Marvel. Get Smart director Peter Segal remains attached after three years of development.
“Shazam” is the name that DC Comics markets the Captain Marvel comics under, since their rival (Marvel Comics) technically owns the rights to the Captain Marvel comic book series. It can be a little confusing, but that’s the reason why they aren’t just calling the movie Captain Marvel, which would make it sound less like a movie Shaq starred in.
It’s also the word little Billy must say in order to turn from a sweet boy to the super hero Captain Marvel via a bolt of lightning. Shazam is an acronym for the gods that were combined for all the special abilities. Oh, and it’s the name...

After getting a little tired of discussing this forever-not-being-made movie with some acquaintances, I've held off on posting any news about it because it all seems to lead to heartbreak. Lightning-bolt-chested heartbreak. But with the most recent news that Bill Birch has been hired to write the screenplay for the Captain Marvel movie, there may be - may be - some reason for genuine heartbreak. If you're asking yourself who Bill Birch is, you're not alone. He's about as untested as a screenwriter can get. In fact, even as an actor he would be considered a novice in the feature world, but he's the name that's been tapped according to Variety. They are also reporting that Peter Segal (who fans will remember as the director of Tommy Boy, Get Smart and who Rob Hunter will remember as the director of Anger Management) is still attached to direct, but I can't hide my disappointment that the project has...

For a super-powered guy with lightning speed, Captain Marvel moves pretty slow. The Shazam! film, once a New Line project and now part of Warner Bros., has been inching towards the screen for several years. Get Smart's Peter Segal remains on board as director, but there are two new contestants in the screenwriting game: Bill Birch and comics luminary Geoff Johns. What's going on with the film, after the break. Variety says the studio is looking to go back to the comics for new script inspiration, and that's probably the best pointer to explain why Green Lantern writer Johns is on board as consultant and co-writer with Bill Birch. Saying WB is going 'back to the comics' isn't very specific, though, as that encompasses decades of stories in which young Billy Batson can say the word Shazam to transform into the super-powered Captain Marvel. (Shazam being the name of...

Bill Birch, actor turned writer who’s been on a number of television shows, is making his mark with the DC comic book adaptation of Shazam! Better known as Captain Marvel, this DC comic book character is a radio news reporter turned superhero when he utters the words ’shazam’, the name of the wizard who granted him the larger than life powers. It is pretty ironic enough that Birch would be attached to this, his name very similar to Captain Marvel’s alter ego named Billy Batson.
Geoff Johns is also co-writing along with Birch with the new script. Attached to direct is Peter Segal with Michael Ewing producing. Currently there has been no casting announcements to the project, with the utter obviousness of the script still in development. When more information follows on this and other comic book adaptations, keep on here to find it all out.

Both Marvel Comics and DC Comics have a Captain Marvel to their name, but only one of these companies has publicized plans to bring its character to the big screen—with the help from one of the comics industry's finest writers, Geoff Johns.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Green Lantern" comic book scribe is teaming up with writer Bill Birch for "Shazam!," an adaptation of DC's Captain Marvel. Birch is credited as the main writer, with Johns pitching in to co-write. Peter Segal will direct the film.
"Shazam!" tells the story of Billy Batson, a young teenager who moonlights as the powerful Captain Marvel. When Batson shouts "Shazam!," he is struck by a lightning bolt and becomes the red-suited hero, empowered with the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury. You know.

John August. The great William Goldman. Bryan Goluboff. Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow. No, it’s not a deadly Screenwriters’ 5-a-side team, Empire’s next opponents in the Movie Football League (we’re third in the table at the moment, beneath Five Key Grips, All Called Keith and Best Boys United). Rather, that’s the full list of writers who’ve taken a crack at adapting Shazam!, the Warner Bros. superhero movie based on DC’s iconic hero, Captain Marvel, and – by sheer dint of the fact that the movie hasn’t been made despite three years of development – who have all failed in their task.Bill Birch will be hoping that he isn’t the sixth name on that fairly illustrious list. He was brought on board today to write the movie, about a teenager named Billy Batson who can transform into the ultra-powerful, ultra-built Captain Marvel (seen above,...

Back in November last year, we told you about the "Get Smart" filmmaking team's, headed by director Peter Segal, involvement with Warner Bros. to reboot "Shazam!," the long gestating DC Comics adaptation of the Captain Marvel story.
But in January, then scriptwriter John August said that the film is dead.
Now, faster than the comic book character Billy Batson can yell Shazam! that Warner Bros. has hired Bill Birch to write the script. Geoff Johns will co-write and consult on the project.
Segal is still attached to direct and will be co-producing along with his Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing.
So the project is moving forward. But the best part? Warner Bros. is promising that they're going back to the original DC Comics for inspiration.

We were reporting rumors early this year that the Captain Marvel movie Shazam! was over, based on screenwriter John August's reports that the project was dead. When the movie's producer mentioned that the project probably wasn't as dead as it seemed, it was fair to assume that a new writer was taking over from now on. And indeed he is. Bill Birch has signed on to write the film, according to Variety, with Get Smart director Peter Segal still on board as well. Apparently the idea is to go back to the original comic for inspiration with this new script, which makes me worry a bit about what they had going on before. Isn't the whole point of a comic book adaptation, especially for a character no one has heard of, to go off an existing property? Either way, it's nice to know that the rumors about Captain Marvel...
