When a Boston mob boss goes missing, a power struggle breaks out among the remaining crime bosses. It sounds like a pretty generic plot, which is why Madso's War is a pretty generic movie. There is nothing you haven't seen before, and plenty that you have, all in much better mob films.

If as a kid you loved walking the aisles of your local video store and picking out vaguely trashy, straight-to-video titles and watching (and most likely making fun of) them with some like-minded friends, then have we got a movie for you. It's called Madso's War, was written by Battle: Los Angeles scribe Christopher Bertolini and last week Fox dropped it on a DVD store shelf near you. And this week we've got a clip for you-- and it's amazing in a probably unintended, this-should-be-on-vhs-in-the-'90s kind of way. Plus, where else can you expect to find the hottie lead of the straight-to-video Tekken movie (Kelly Overton) seduced by the star of Anacondas: The Hunt For the Blood Orchid (Matthew Marsden)? Don't worry, it's a Safe For...

Battle: Los Angeles
Stars: Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Ramon Rodriguez, Cory Hadrict, Gino Anthony Pesi | Written by Christopher Bertolini | Directed by Jonathan Liebesman
You would have thought that aliens would have learned their lesson by now. Why when invading earth do they pick on the America first, the largest stockpile of armaments in the world? Battle: Los Angeles features a bunch of pressure-cooker headed aliens short on intelligence, but apparently better armed than we are, who decide to lay waste to one of the most well defended areas on the planet.
With most of La reduced to smoking piles of rubble and burnt out cars in the first 10 minutes, it’s up to Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) to lead a team of largely anonymous grunts on a ground mission to rescue some civilians before an incoming airstrike wipes Santa Monica off the map completely.

Synopsis: For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world — Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, and China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant (Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before. Chicago – With “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” about to hit theaters and get the adrenalin flowing for major city destruction from another planet, you may be tempted to catch up with Jonathan Liebesman’s “Battle: Los Angeles” for a similar dose of macho male escapism. Don’t fall for it. This is an annoying movie that fails on nearly every level.
Blu-ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
“District 9” meets “The Hurt Locker” in Chris Bertolini’s screenplay, a piece that tries to take a man-on-the-ground war movie approach to an alien invasion. One of the biggest problems with “Battle: La” is that it’s so derivative of superior films that you’ll just keep wondering why you’re not watching one of them. With horrible camera work, mediocre (at best) special effects, laughable dialogue, and direction that never grounds any of the action with something worth caring about, “Battle: Los Angeles” is one...

I never saw Battle: Los Angeles in theaters so after watching this Blu-ray I was left wondering what went wrong. So I revisited the almost unanimously praised first trailer. Now I get it. The trailer was effective because it had absolutely no dialogue. It makes a lot of sense because the film looks great and sounds even better, but this script is just embarrassing.
The film opens by wasting an obscene amount of time establishing the back story of each character. We spend no more than one minute with each of the 15 or so supporting characters, as if the writer (Christopher Bertolini) felt obligated to give us just one reason to care about each of them in case they were to die later on.
Please, we know Marines have a home life. Yet, this film never allows these characters to become more than their stock labels of "the virgin" or "father-to-be.

Following the release of last year’s controversial Skyline – the Brothers Strause’s sophomore effort which may or may not have plagiarised Battle: Los Angeles, a film the brothers had previously worked on – Jonathan Liebesman’s latest film was left looking like the White Knight of alien invasion movies.
How fitting, then, that Battle: Los Angeles should star Aaron Eckhart – Gotham’s very own White Knight – as Staff Sergeant Nantz, a retiring marine left fighting almost as many demons as he is extraterrestrial invaders, having infamously lost his entire platoon in a previous engagement. Dragged back into battle by the film’s antagonistic mess of flashing biotechnology and flailing tentacles, Nantz has the opportunity to redeem himself in both his own eyes and those of his doubtful men.
While Battle: Los Angeles is exponentially better than Skyline (heck, Avp:r was exponentially better than Skyline), and arguably the best movie of Liebesman’s career,...

Battle: Los Angeles
Directed by Jonathan Liebesman
Written by Christopher Bertolini
2011, USA
Before I attended the midnight screening of Battle : Los Angeles on the day of its release, the first couple of reviews had begun to trickle through onto IMDb from screenings earlier that day. One of them gave it a scathing 1/10 review, calling it the worst example of the evolution of Hollywood action-cinema. The other gifted it a very favourable 8/10 and called it a nigh-perfect blend of Cloverfield meets Independence Day and about as close as you’d ever want to get to being a marine in a real-life alien invasion.
So the lofty hopes instilled in me by that sensational initial teaser (scored gorgeously by Johann Johannsson’s heart-wrenching 2006 track ‘The Sun’s Gone Dim and the Sky’s Turned Black’) had now eroded to a cautious anticipation. But I’ve long awaited Director Jonathan Liebesman to...

If you’ve seen one alien invasion movie, you’ve seen them all. That is, until a filmmaker does something different. Men in Black was something different; witty jokes and a playful rapport between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones made it one of the more memorable invasion films of the 90s.
Battle: Los Angeles, by contrast, is nothing new. Director Jonathan Liebesman and Writer Christopher Bertolini take several time-tested war and alien-invasion themes and mix them together to make a movie that is seventy percent entertainment, ten percent video game and twenty percent over-dramatized soap opera. If you are able to leave your alien-flick prejudices at home, you will actually get a kick out of Battle: Los Angeles, even if it draws out a healthy snicker at the height of a lofty emotional confrontation.
Aaron Eckhart stars as SSgt. Michael Nantz; he wants out of the marines. After a tour that went horribly wrong,...

Battle: Los Angeles Directed by: Jonathan Liebesman Written by: Chris Bertolini Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Ramon Rodriguez, Michael Pena, Bridget Moynahan, Ne-Yo Battle: Los Angeles is really two movies. One is a disappointing Sf film about an alien invasion. The other is an earnest, reasonably authentic war movie, which in its best moments recreates what it must be like to be embedded with real troops. Unfortunately it has some worst moments too. If you enjoy video games, Battle: Los Angeles is ready for you to boot up. You’ll feel right at home except for not having your M16 of course. For Sf admirers, aside from the alien hardware and a fresh reason to be invaded, there’s not much here for you. Leading the platoon (and giving the movie a fighting chance) is Aaron Eckhart. As Staff Sgt. Michael Nantz, the invasion puts his resignation on hold and...

There have been a couple of science fiction entries, in recent history, that involve an attacking alien force, taking Los Angeles. Skyline released in November of 2010, to tepid reviews. Now, Battle: Los Angeles comes in, not with a ho-hum but with a holy s^%^! Released in theatres March 11th, this second film takes an intimate view of a platoon of Marines, in the thick of an alien invasion. This unit is led by Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) and not since James Cameron's Aliens, has a science fiction film looked at the Marines with such detail.
The film's script, from Christopher Bertolini (Madso's War), is focused, despite the grand scale of an alien attack. The pacing moves quickly, with several meteorites crashing down in over twelve major cities across the globe. First the infantry attacks in robotic suits, then the aerial drones fly in,...

Saturday Pm/Sunday Am, 5th Update: Here's how the North American box office is shaping up for this weekend based on Friday, Saturday, weekend and cumulative grosses. It was an overall $129 million weekend, which is still down (-12%) compared to last year's fired-up Alice In Wonderland 3D totals. 1. Battle: Los Angeles (Sony) New [3,417 Theaters] Friday $13.5, Saturday $3.7M, Weekend $39M Sony Pictures' PG-13 sci-fi actioner Battle: Los Angeles opened as the big #1 this weekend with $13.5M Friday and +2% for $13.7M Saturday. With the studio claiming the pic only cost $70M (I don't buy it), it met the lower end of expectations of weekend grosses around $36M. That's Sony's fourth consecutive #1 film debut this year following The Green Hornet, Just Go With It and The Roommate. The film received a "B" overall CinemaScore, but an "A" from young men under age 18 and an "A-" from all moviegoers under 25. Directed by Jonathan Liebesman, produced...

We here at Tmp have been looking forward to Battle: Los Angeles for months. We raved about the first teaser trailer, and loved the theatrical one. We were thrilled about a new clip this week, and were even able to snag an interview with one of the stars. Obviously this is a film we've been anticipating. But now that the film has graced theater screens nationwide, does it live up to our lofty expectations, or was the film doomed to disappoint from the start?
The Set Up:
Staff Sgt. Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) is preparing to leave the military. But before he does, he's pitted with training a newly built platoon of soldiers under the command of Lieutenant William Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez). He thinks it will be an easy day, and an easy job. But turmoil erupts when meteors cash land on Earth's surface and an evacuation is called.

There isn’t a sacred moment in Jonathan Liebesman‘s Battle: Los Angeles that rises above cliché. Every line, character, plot point, and visual effect looks all too familiar. Despite this conundrum, this sci-fi blockbuster has enough blistering, in-your-face action to distract for most of the two-hour runtime. Unabashedly frenetic, Liebesman rarely gives time to focus on anything but the battle.
The set-up is quick and dirty. 24 hours before the invasion occurs, we quickly rip through the back stories of our Marines. Front and center is our lead, Staff Sgt. Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), on his way out after a slowly revealed previous combat mishap. Blatant “hints” of an impending meteor strike repeat on news broadcasts in the background and before we know it, the alien attack is here and our group of marines are getting prepped to deploy.

Battle: Los Angeles doesn't really waste any time letting you know the sort of film you're about to watch. Right from the start, the world is under massive assault by an unknown alien aggressor that has unleashed deadly attacks on all of the planet's major cities simultaneously.
The aliens arrive first in infantry; crashing into beaches everywhere in large capsules that fall from the sky like meteors. The marauders storm from the waves with guns blazing, mowing down everything in their path.
The Us is struggling to draw up defensive lines, and it has been decided that Los Angeles must be saved. Santa Monica is "mostly" evacuated. A small regimen of Marines is dispatched to head deep into Santa Monica - which is...

If you're going into Battle: Los Angeles expecting Blackhawk Down 2: Attack of the Saucer Men, rest assured that's exactly what you're going to get. Director Johnathan Liebesman promised us a combat-heavy alien invasion movie and he delivers on the intensity and action in spades, putting you so close to "the shit" that you'll wish you strapped on a helmet before entering the theatre.
Battle: L.A. is a war movie first and a science fiction movie second, which is probably why it works so well. It's essentially a mission movie about a platoon that's sent into the hot zone following the invasion to rescue civilians from a cop shop. They have three hours to get in and get out before the military fries the whole coastline to cut off the advancing alien army.

Chicago – It used to be an insult to say that a loud action movie reminded a critic of a video game. The fact is that most recent video games feature better storytelling and more entertainment value than the horrendous “Battle: Los Angeles,” an annoying movie with such inept direction that it’s not even fun on a visceral level. Even the explosions are boring.
It’s almost as if someone was watching the 2010 Academy Awards and wondered what it would be like to merge Best Picture nominees “District 9” and “The Hurt Locker” (one shudders at the thought of other possible mash-ups like “Avatar” meets “Precious”). “Battle: Los Angeles” is so derivative of superior films that you’ll spend half the running time merely making a list of movies that you’d rather be watching. A scene from Battle: Los Angeles
Photo: Columbia Pictures With Battle: Los Angeles screenwriter Christopher Bertolini (The General's Daughter) and director Jonathan Liebesman (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) have created a video game of a war film by mashing together Black Hawk Down and District 9 with an invasion to match War of the Worlds. Does that mean it's good? I enjoyed it for what it was, but I wouldn't necessarily call it good.
This film can't match the intensity of Black Hawk Down despite trying to be as chaotic and fast paced. It doesn't delve into the politics or morals of District 9 even though desperately clinging to the idea of what it means to be human. And it doesn't reach the scope of War of the Worlds as it turns into another film hell bent on destroying and saving Los Angeles as the rest of the world...

Every bit the Black Hawk Down-War of the Worlds hybrid that it's being advertised as, Battle: Los Angeles is a loud and proud piece of semper fi sci-fi, occasionally thrilling, periodically groan-inducing and thoroughly familiar in its efforts to imitate ground-level warfare against a biomechanical menace.
Staff Sgt. Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) is on the verge of retirement, naturally. After 20 years in the Marines and one seriously rough tour in Iraq, he's putting in his notice -- a notice rendered null and void by an incoming alien invasion. Nantz is assigned to a platoon that's being dispatched to Santa Monica; their orders: save some civilians that are holed up in a police station and high-tail it out of there before the place gets leveled.

Movie review of Battle: Los Angeles - Screenwriter Christopher Bertolini has recycled every war cliché that’s been done. They could have literally been in any other city with no discernable difference. Action films that premiere in March almost always will have less of a budget than the ones that appear in the summer. That is not the case here. Battle: Los Angeles reportedly cost $100 million to make. It is a shame that it was all wasted here. Director Jonathan Liebesman (“Darkness Falls”) and cinematographer Lukas Ettlin practically assault the senses from the beginning. They employ the shaky camera technique that has lost its appeal long ago. I shudder to think of Steven Spielberg using this method for “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. It is a good thing to be able to see what happens on the screen. When directors do this, more often than not it causes nausea more than excitement.

Further evidence of the continuing degradation of the once-proud American action film, “Battle: Los Angeles” relies on egregious war movie stereotypes and clichés in this disastrously bad hybrid of “Black Hawk Down” and an alien-invasion picture. For their essentially 90-minute video game complete with quests and required trick shots to down enemies, director Jonathan Liebesman (“The Killing Room”) and writer Christopher Bertolini (“The General’s Daughter”) ostensibly took inspiration from the Battle of Los Angeles, a falsely reported World War II air raid, for their poorly crafted story of Marines making a last stand against alien invaders.

The warning signs for Battle: Los Angeles were there for us when Sony made the unprecedented decision to not screen the movie for U.K. blogs in an attempt to avoid the critics mauling they must have known was coming. A heavy U.S. embargo has just been lifted on the movie (notice – just hours before it opens tomorrow) and the backlash against Battle: La is thunderous and defeaning.
Legendary film critic Roger Ebert has given the movie half a star (!);
“Battle: Los Angeles” is noisy, violent, ugly and stupid. Its manufacture is a reflection of appalling cynicism on the part of its makers, who don’t even try to make it more than senseless chaos. Here’s a science-fiction film that’s an insult to the words “science” and “fiction,” and the hyphen in between them. You want to cut it up to clean under your fingernails.

The director/writer team of Jonathan Liebesman and Christopher Bertolini may not have the lengthy resume that a film the caliber of Battle: Los Angeles requires to instill confidence in some moviegoers this weekend. That being said, general audiences should find the thrill-a-minute alien invasion film to be an enjoyable time in theaters and a good spring pre-cursor to what should be an exciting summer of action movies.

Earth is under attack and only Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez can save us. Here’s our review of Battle: Los Angeles…
Yet again, America's been invaded by aliens, who rain from the sky like meteors to terrify an unsuspecting populace. This time, the aggressors dominate not because of their superior intelligence, but because their guns are cooler than ours.
Battle: Los Angeles is an invasion movie for the Call Of Duty generation, a cinematic version of a console shooter with wok-headed invaders who bleed cola and fire pew-pew laser guns from rooftops.
Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez are the two recognisable faces among a group of otherwise anonymous soldiers dropped behind enemy lines as the occupation begins. Within seconds of their arrival, much of Los Angeles has been reduced to a smoking pile of concrete and knackered tanks, and invaders prowl the ruined streets of Santa Monica.

In previous clips and trailers, we've seen "meteors" splashing down off the coast of Santa Monica and gi-normous spaceships rising up from beneath buildings in L.A., but in the latest preview clip from director Jonathan Liebesman's (The Killing Room) upcoming sci-fi movie, Battle: Los Angeles, we get our first look at human-alien combat.
Written by Christopher Bertolini (The General's Daughter), Battle: Los Angeles is inspired by the 1942 "attack" on Los Angeles and centers around a group of Marines who lead the fight against an alien invasion. In this new preview clip, a squad of Marines led by Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) enounter the aliens in their subterranean den beneath the streets of L.A. in a scene eerily similar to the first engagement between Colonial Marines and the xenomorphs in James Cameron's Aliens.

Written by Christopher Bertolini (The General's Daughter) and directed by Jonathan Liebesman (The Killing Room), Battle: Los Angeles is inspired by the 1942 "attack" on Los Angeles that has become known as "The Battle of Los Angeles," an incident which involved the U.S. military strafing the skies over L.A. with anti-aircraft fire for more than an hour without ever hitting any targets. At the time, the U.S. military thought we were being invaded by the Japanese. Tomorrow marks the 69th anniversary of The Battle of Los Angeles, which remains one of the strangest events of WWII and is still a mystery to this day. The event took place during the night between February 24-25, 1942. Never fully explained, these events remain shrouded in mystery and the subject of intense speculation. Beginning shortly after 2 am on February 25, and throughout the night, unidentified objects were reported over Los Angeles and the threat was so unusual that air raid sirens were sounded, and a total blackout was ordered. At 3:16 am, the 37th Coast Artillery Brigade began firing 12.8-pound antiaircraft shells at the objects – more than 1,400 shells were fired over the next 58 minutes as the objects moved south, from Santa Monica to Long Beach. “The obvious thought was that these were Japanese bombers come to attack the United States,” says UFO expert Bill Birnes, publisher of UFO magazine. “But it wasn’t.

Today, the incident has been ruled a "false alarm" triggered by "war nerves," but many believe that the military was shooting at a UFO or multiple UFOs (and a photo that ran in the L.A. Times appears to show spotlights focusing on a flying saucer). Battle: Los Angeles stars Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Pena, Bridget Moynahan, Lucas Till, and singer-turned-actor Ne-Yo.
