‘The Amityville Murders’ – A Ghoulish and Exploitative Look at the DeFeo Murders [The Amityville IP]
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
There’s something frustrating about a film that begins with a lot of potential, and then thoroughly squanders it.
Writer/director Daniel Farrands’ The Amityville Murders is one such film. It’s one of the few “true” entries from the last dozen or so films, in that it actually tackles the Amityville story by focusing on the true crime murders of the DeFeo family. It’s well-shot, looks good, has mostly decent (albeit broad) performances.
These are all things that many of the IP cash-grab entries have been lacking.
Unfortunately it’s also incredibly sensational, relies too heavily on repetitive supernatural elements, and – most egregiously – features a distasteful ending that highlights Farrands’ unfortunate tendency to exploit real life tragedy for cash.
If the name sounds familiar,...

If I had a dollar for every time I predicted the twists and turns in the new movie The Collective, I wouldn’t be even close to being a millionaire, for there are not that many twists here in the first place. Directed by Tom DeNucci, The Collective is like a stepping stone for the performers to showcase their skills, and the film unfolds like it’s well aware of that fact. The film has a decent star cast with actors like Don Johnson, Paul Ben-Victor, and Tyrese Gibson added to the mix who do a good job, but it is Lucas Till who gets to play the title role. I should add that he falters badly as he is unable to add to the stakes of this action thriller. See, that’s what Tom Cruise does well in the “Mission Impossible” franchise. He sells you the movie by acting like it really matters.

"Found 'em! I'll send some guys..." Quiver Distribution has unveiled an official trailer for The Collective, a new action thriller from filmmaker Tom DeNucci. This is yet another of these junk action films, with a similar plot to so many others - involving hitmen and traffickers and taking out the "bad guys". A young recruit to a mysterious agency finds himself going rogue on his first assignment, tracking down a dangerous group of "untouchable" human traffickers. The Collective charts the story of a group of righteous assassins who take aim at a human trafficking ring that's backed by a network of billionaires. Lucas Till stars as Sam Alexander, a "rookie assassin", joined by Ruby Rose, Mercedes Varnado, Paul Ben-Victor, Tyrese Gibson, John Fiore, Levon Panek, plus Don Johnson as their leader. This looks as uninteresting and derivative as anything can, even the action. Will anyone even watch? // Continue Reading ›...

Plane isn’t stupid enough. The title of this Gerard Butler action thriller, which should only be said with the monosyllabic matter-of-factness of a toddler at an airport, is so boneheaded that it craves chaotic genius in return. But Plane is stifled by just how ordinary it is, and how closely it hews to the standard tropes of action films with longer, more descriptive – yet less ridiculous – titles.
Here, Butler is parachuted into the exact kind of cheap, vaguely racist action flick that dominated the Eighties and Nineties. He plays Brodie Torrance, a commercial pilot heading up a New Year’s Eve flight from Singapore to Tokyo. It’s a budget airline. There are only 14 passengers onboard – plus, of course, a convicted criminal named Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), who’s being transferred between prisons. The plane is caught up in a violent storm that Brodie is ordered to fly through.

Nowadays it’s rare to see a multiplex movie with so little affect. And arriving in the second week of January as one of the few dumping-ground action programmers we thankfully still get, the bluntly titled Plane can be––and this is not a backhanded compliment necessarily––described as a VOD action movie that somehow escaped to theaters. Directed by French action craftsman Jean-François Richet, the kind of cineaste who probably grew up on Charles Bronson movies exported to Europe as opposed to Jean-Luc Godard at the cinematheque, the film can bring to mind both Clint Eastwood and even the late John Flynn in its formal simplicity.
Though the film’s chief attraction will be its star Gerard Butler, who seems to almost be veering into Keanu Reeves / Nicolas Cage “begrudging respect” territory just by keeping at it in these unpretentious action flicks. The actor, who permanently looks like he...

January is the time for campy horror movies (see: “M3GAN”), extremely late-coming Oscar contenders (International Feature hopefuls “Saint Omer” and “Close”), and of course, ridiculous action thrillers, preferably starring Gerard Butler.
And Lionsgate is more than happy to provide us with the latter via “Plane,” Butler’s newest action movie. The studio released the final trailer for the film Wednesday, a week ahead of its theatrical release.
As its title suggests, the story of “Plane” begins on an airplane, piloted by Brodie Torrance (Butler), which is carrying Louis Gaspare (“Evil” star Mike Colter), a man being extradited on charges of homicide. After the plane gets heavily damaged by a freak storm, Brodie is forced to crash-land in Jolo, an island in the Philippines overrun by anti-government militias. When one of the militias, led by the short-tempered Dele (Yoson An), takes the majority of the crew and passengers hostage, Brodie is...

The second trailer for Plane tosses in all the standard action film moments, with Gerard Butler and Mike Colter as the good guys and a group of rebels as the villains. And although it’s named Plane, most of the action appears to take place on the ground rather than in the air. (Maybe the sequel will be called Boat and take place on land?)
Joining Gerard Butler and Mike Colter in the R-rated action thriller are Yoson An, Daniella Pineda, Paul Ben-Victor, Remi Adeleke, Joey Slotnick, Evan Dane Taylor, Claro de los Reyes, and Tony Goldwyn.
Jean-François Richet directed from a screenplay by Charles Cumming and J.P. Davis (story by Cumming). Butler, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, and Alan Siegel produce.
Lionsgate Films is releasing Plane in theaters on January 13, 2023.

Look, it's not every day that I get to flex my background as an aviation major and actually make it relevant with my obsessive love for film. So, for better or worse, I'm about to take full advantage of the opportunity here and go completely off the deep end with one of the more amusing movies on the upcoming calendar.
I've been frantically gathering as much evidence as possible to support the hypothesis that we're in the early stages of an aerial renaissance of sorts. "Top Gun: Maverick" emphatically proved that audiences still feel the need for speed, flocking to theaters to experience those visceral thrills for themselves. In a quirk of timing, the World War II-set movie about flying aces, "Devotion," also came out last year -- even sharing similar DNA with the "Top Gun" sequel, in fact, thanks to the casting of Glen Powell in both movies. Industry insiders are watching Emancipation closely after an incident involving Smith at the last Academy Awards. Smith slapped Chris Rock‘s face on live television after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s partner, Jada-Pinkett Smith. “The slap heard around the world” damaged Smith’s reputation and banned him from the Academy for ten years. Smith also resigned from the Academy to minimize the damage done. Despite the steps taken, Smith’s fall from grace hurt Emancipation‘s status as an Oscar contender. It isn’t easy to champion a film whose star cannot participate in the annual celebration.

Seth Rogen has spoken out about his experience as part of the cast of Steven Spielberg’s Toronto Film Festival-bound The Fabelmans.
The actor shares in an upcoming edition of The Process that he wrapped his role in the film, loosely based on the iconic filmmaker’s childhood and upbringing, toward the end of last year. “It was really cool. It was fascinating. It was a really surreal experience for everyone involved,” Rogen said of the film, which has him playing a character inspired by Spielberg’s uncle. “It premieres at Toronto. I’ve literally not seen one frame of it, so it’ll be a bizarre experience.”
In conversation with Pam & Tommy editor Tatiana S. Riegel for Deadline’s video series, Rogen also addressed his “immense” relief in seeing Lily James excel in her transformational turn as the Hulu series’ Pamela Anderson.
