As far as investigators go, Jim Rockford (James Garner) is a bit of a departure from the mostly-polished (Columbo excepted) detectives of television's first decade. A slouchily dressed detective who lived in a trailer and served time in San Quentin, Rockford was cool — if not always collected. "The Rockford Files" ran for six seasons on NBC beginning in 1974 and was later resurrected for a series of '90s TV movies. In that time, audiences were introduced not only to Rockford, but to a cast of supporting characters including his truck driver dad Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.), LAPD pal Becker (Joe Santos), and the con artist Angel (Stuart Margolin).
Garner passed away in 2014, and only a few "Rockford Files" castmates are still with us today. Those who are still around include notable recurring guest stars like famously mustachioed "Blue Bloods" star Tom Selleck, Egot-winning multi-hyphenate Rita Moreno, and "Happy Gilmore" director...

As Easter Sunday approaches this weekend, we thought we’d “die” your eggs a little a differently. That is, we’re on the great hidden treasure hunt for some of the most colorful and delicious horror movie Easter eggs found in some of our favorite titles. But here’s the thing. We aren’t talking about obscure cameos from people that are hard to miss, or even secretive foreshadowing within a single movie, a la the entire Final Destination franchise. Nor are we talking about mere verbal references to other horror movies. Rather, we’re interested in visual crossover clues found one horror movie that pay homage to another, found tucked away in the background or even hidden in plain sight. You see the distinction. Good. Hopefully you haven’t already seen what’s to follow. Happy holiday y’all, here’s our Top 10 Favorite Crossover Horror Movie Easter Eggs!

John Carpenter's "Escape From New York" is a cult classic for a reason — it rules. Released in 1981, "Escape From New York" is a down-and-dirty sci-fi action pic in which New York City has become a giant maximum security prison. As bad luck would have it, an attempted hijacking of Air Force One forces the President (Donald Pleasence) to eject from the plane in an escape pod. Guess where he ends up? Yep — NYC, baby! The Big Apple! The militarized government wants to save the President and retrieve a top-secret briefcase he has cuffed to his wrist, but New York is too dangerous to simply enter for your average rescue mission. So the powers-that-be strike upon a simple plan: they force criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) into doing the job.
Snake, a cool dude with an eyepatch and a whispery voice, has no real choice in the matter: a device...

Why do some of the best horror movies revolve around a holiday setting? Could the thought of having to be cooped up with our families send us into a monstrous rage? Or maybe it’s the idea of something that is usually so cheerful and happy is invaded by death and terror. These two things typically don’t go together, so seeing the two mashed up together in all its bloody glory can be satisfying. Eli Roth is finally bringing his entry into the Grindhouse series to life, leaving only two trailers unmade. Thanksgiving is a bloody good time (read our review) and puts us in the mood for more holiday horror. When planning your horror year, what are some of the best holiday slasher films? Let’s find out.

A couple months ago, we heard that Neca had created a figure of Tom Atkins’ character Dr. Challis from Halloween III: Season of the Witch (watch it Here) that would only be available for purchased by fans attending the Halloween: 45 Years of Terror convention. That convention has since come and gone – and now Neca has put the Challis figure up for sale on their website! The figure comes with a Silver Shamrock coaster signed by Atkins himself and can be purchased at This Link. It’s going for the price of $75.
Written and directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, Halloween III: Season of the Witch has the following synopsis: Hospital emergency room Dr. Daniel “Dan” Challis and Ellie Grimbridge, the daughter of a murder victim, uncover a terrible plot by small-town mask maker Conal Cochran, a madman who’s planning a Halloween mass murder utilizing an ancient Celtic ritual. The magic of cinema. The lights dim, the screen illuminates, and we’re transported to another world. But what happens when that world contains… another world? Horror has long been a genre that loves to play with its audience, and nothing says “I see you” quite like a movie-within-a-movie. It’s like a Russian doll of terror, layers of scares unfolding one after another… and who doesn’t love a good nesting nightmare?
Let’s dive into the meta-madness of horror films that give us a double dose of dread, with the movie-within-a-movie trope!

Dr. Daniel Challis (Tom Atkins) stumbles upon a sinister plot by the Silver Shamrock mask company to harness Stonehenge’s mystical powers and harm children on Halloween night. Amidst this chaos, a TV commercial advertises the original Halloween movie, suggesting a universe where Michael Myers’ terror is mere fiction.

It has been 45 years since the release of John Carpenter’s Halloween. And while there are so many unique approaches to celebrating the occasion – killing your babysitter, purchasing Laurie Strode’s house, etc. – there is now yet another way. Debuting at the H45: 45 Years of Terror convention, new prints that bring Michael Myers to Riverdale (or is it Archie to Haddonfield?) is the crossover you had no idea had been inked into existence.
The Halloween / Archie crossover is part of the Archie Horror line, which launched in 2015. While there won’t be a run of comic books themselves, the great Matt Talbot has designed two special prints that will be featured at the aforementioned con. On the work, Talbot said, “Every so often, if you’re really fortunate, a dream project comes along—and this was one of those times. The Archie gang… meeting up with Michael Myers? When...

Although far from the first horror anthology, Creepshow quickly established itself as the quintessential one. After several stalled attempts to work together, George A. Romero and Stephen King — two undisputed masters in their respective fields, each in their prime — finally collaborated in 1982. With both creators having grown up on EC horror comics of the 1950s like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear, it made sense that an homage to those works would bring the two titans of terror together.
Creepshow packs five tales (three originals and two adapted from existing King short stories) plus a wraparound that bookends the film in two hours flat. The Halloween-set framing story finds a disparaging father lambasting his son for reading horror comics before throwing away the latest issue of Creepshow. Beckoned by the silent host known as The Creep, the tales within the discarded comic serve as the anthology’s segments.

Long before horror got truly meta, the ’80s were dishing up a constant supply of movies to feed the demand of an audience who just couldn’t get enough, and the VHS boom provided video stores with a way to make some serious money out of the exploding genre, pulling in punters with over-the-top cover art that promised incredible scenes of monsters, gore, and killers galore.
These days, we groan when a character goes to check out a mysterious noise from down in the basement or in the woods, but this kinda standard stuff was often the bread and butter of the genre back then. Still, it’s not always a loud music sting or a brutal slashing that’s the most effective at getting under your skin, and the ’80s really understood that. While Garn Stephens racked up over twenty screen credits over the course of her acting career, only one of those credits was on a horror movie… but what a horror movie it was. Stephens, who happened to be married to genre icon Tom Atkins at the time, played the ill-fated Marge Guttman in director Tommy Lee Wallace‘s oddball 1982 Halloween sequel Halloween III: Season of the Witch (watch it Here). Marge was the woman who was relaxing in her motel room when she made the mistake of messing with the trademark badge that fell off a Silver Shamrock mask. Stephens started out acting on stage, then made her screen debut playing a waitress in a 1975 episode of the TV anthology series The Wide World of Mystery. Over the decades, she landed roles in The Sunshine Boys,...

George A. Romero is one of my favorite filmmakers, so of course his 1982 Stephen King collaboration Creepshow (watch it Here) is one of my favorite films… and I’m glad to hear that Scream Factory is set to give the classic anthology movie a 4K Uhd release on June 27th. You can buy the 4K Uhd copy of the movie on its own, in a bundle with exclusive posters, an exclusive slipcover, and a prism sticker, in another bundle that adds an enamel pin set into the mix, or in another bundle that adds on some lobby cards. There are limited numbers of these bundles available, so head over to Scream Factory Asap to get yours.
Directed by Romero from a screenplay by King, Creepshow has the following synopsis: Writer Stephen King and director George Romero.

Scripted by Carpenter and Nick Castle, Escape from New York has the following description: In a world ravaged by crime, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a walled prison where brutal prisoners roam. But when the US president crash-lands inside, only one man can bring him back: notorious outlaw and former Special Forces war hero Snake Plissken. But time is short. In last year’s Scream movie, which came to us from the filmmaking trio known as Radio Silence, there’s a moment where the characters realize the latest iteration of the Ghostface killer is “making a requel”. It breaks down like this: “You can’t just reboot a franchise from scratch anymore, but you can’t just do a straight sequel either. You’ve got to build something new. It’s got to be part of an on-going storyline. New main characters, yes, but supported by and related to legacy characters. Not quite a reboot, not quite a sequel.” Some prefer to term “legacyquel” over “requel”, but in a new interview with ComicBook.com Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett confirmed they’re planning to make an Escape from New York “requel”.
It was announced back in November that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are attached to direct a new take on John Carpenter’s 1981 sci-fi...

You can only tell the same old slasher story so many times before it gets stale, and that’s why so many horror franchises eventually find the need to escape the confines of their original small-town settings and have their villains invade larger urban centers. And if you’re going to set your story in a big city, why not the most recognizable metropolis of all, New York?
Urban horror might not be as common as scary movies about Transylvanian castles and cursed cabins in the middle of nowhere, but we’ve seen a plethora of NYC-set horror flicks over the years. And in honor of Scream VI also choosing to relocate the action to the city that never sleeps, we’ve come up with this list celebrating six of the best horror movies set in NYC.

Killer machines are a narrative trope about as old as machinery itself, but there’s something especially creepy about metallic killers when they’re roughly human-shaped. And as we’ve seen with the success of Blumhouse’s insanely popular M3GAN, the uncanny valley can still go a long way when it comes to attracting modern audiences.
With that in mind, we’ve decided to celebrate the home release of M3GAN with a list of six other memorable killer androids in horror movies. After all, these man-made movie monsters evolved alongside Hollywood’s understanding of technology, so we’ve seen some pretty interesting homicidal automatons over the years.
Obviously, this list is based on personal opinion, but we’ll still be following a couple of rules. First of all, we’ll be excluding cyborgs from the list, as their human bits make them a completely different kind of character. Second, we...

As far as Christmas action movies go, most would say John McTiernan’s Die Hard takes the crown as the greatest of all time. However, another action classic that hit theaters a year before, Lethal Weapon, is also set around the holiday. Written by a young Shane Black (using the Christmas setting that would become his trademark), this wound up being perhaps the most influential action movie of all time, maybe even more so than Die Hard (although that’s debatable). While not the first buddy cop movie (older films like Freebie and the Bean and Best Movie You Never Saw fave Running Scared are also part of the genre), it set the tone for many films to follow. There was something so perfect about the pairing of Mel Gibson’s crazed Martin Riggs and Danny Glover’s family man Roger Murtagh, along with Richard Donner’s ace direction. The three men loved each other,...

“Escape from New York,” John Carpenter’s post-apocalyptic masterpiece, has constantly been threatened with a remake. Everyone from now-disgraced action auteur Brett Ratner to “The Invisible Man” mastermind Leigh Whannell has taken a crack at the material over the years. But it seems like a remake is closer than its ever been, thanks to a new version from the filmmaking team Radio Silence.
Villella recently told Entertainment Weekly that the project is in “very, very early stages” and get this – it’s not a remake but a continuation of the original.
The “Escape from New York” from 1981 followed criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), who is recruited to save the President (Donald Pleasence) after his plane goes down in New York City, now a walled-off penal colony full of the worst of the worst. Defined largely by its believably decayed production design (assisted by a young James Cameron), a supporting cast...

Update 2: It would seem that Radio Silence are indeed going to direct the new Escape from New York movie as Deadline has also confirmed the news, adding that original director John Carpenter is onboard as an executive producer.
Update: Our friends at Bloody Disgusting have been able to confirm that Radio Silence is in early talks with 20th Century Fox about directing an Escape from New York project, but Kurt Russell has not been contacted at this time.

Halloween as we know it has finally come to an end. No longer will The Boogeyman be haunting the streets of Haddonfield. With the release of Halloween Ends, and before the series is inevitably rebooted again, it’s time now to take stock of the franchise and its best moments. Over the course of 44 years, the Michael Myers saga has given us plenty of frights. There have been exciting highs and terribly grim lows. Through it all, there’s always been something worth talking about, no matter how divisive.
While the franchise’s carnage is always up for discussion, I wanted to focus in on those non-kill scenes一mostly, I may have snuck in one or two一that linger with you long after the movie has ended. Basically obligated to make another Halloween sequel but hoping to leave Michael Myers behind, producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill decided to try to turn the franchise into an anthology series, where each film would tell a different story set on Halloween. Nigel Kneale was hired to write the initial script for what became Halloween III: Season of the Witch (watch it Here), and Carpenter and Hill’s pal Tommy Lee Wallace was hired to direct the film. After watching his movie get rejected by viewers when it was released in 1982 and then gain cult classic status over the decades, Wallace has taken it upon himself to write a tell-all book about the production of his Halloween sequel. The book is titled Halloween 3: Where the Hell is Michael Myers? – The Definitive History of Horror’s Most Misunderstood Film, and is going to be available from Bear Manor Media this November.

Spoilers for the "Halloween" franchise, including "Halloween Ends," follow.
"Halloween Ends," the latest (and possibly last?) entry in the "Halloween" franchise, goes to unexpected places. It takes big swings, introduces new characters, and unfolds in a fairly unpredictable manner. Some have taken issue with such drastic changes, but here's the thing: big, weird swings are nothing new for the "Halloween" series. Indeed, part of what makes the "Halloween" franchise so memorable is its flexibility — Michael Myers' never-ending murder quest has been shaped and reshaped in different ways through a score of films.
And that's part of the fun. If you're a fan who only wants these films to play the hits — The Shape stalking teens through Haddonfield — there are multiple movies that offer that. But there's something to be said for the out-there, unconventional, big-swing "Halloween" movies. Movies that take that familiar formula and smash it to bites, asking if...

This article contains major spoilers for "Halloween Ends."
Over four decades since John Carpenter's seminal horror masterpiece, the "Halloween" series has finally been laid to rest with "Halloween Ends." In the world of slasher movies, labeling something as the "final chapter" is a nice gesture, but these franchises rarely ever stay dead. Although David Gordon Green's conclusion makes it explicitly clear that his Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney), the seemingly immortal villain, has taken a new shape in the form of literal mincemeat after the town exacts its pound of flesh once and for all.
It asks if "Halloween H20" had actually stuck by its ending, rather than disregarding its finality for "Halloween: Resurrection."
In the closing moments of "Halloween Ends," it's implied that Haddonfield, and by extension Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), can finally rest now that Michael has been put to pasture. But for the folks...

This is not another “Halloween III is good actually” article. After forty years, its reappraisal as a genre classic seems to be more or less complete. It is true that for years the absence of Michael Myers, Laurie Strode, and Dr. Loomis led many fans of the Halloween movies to confusion, rejection, or outright rage against the film, but as time has passed, tempers have cooled, and the film has been assessed on its own terms. Though John Carpenter’s original masterpiece is generally acknowledged as the apex of the franchise, Halloween III: Season of the Witch is, at least for many, the film that captures the essence of the Halloween season better than any other in the series. By looking to the ancient past and combining it with current American celebrations and cultural rituals, it creates a tapestry that reflects the “Season of the Witch” in a way that...

In the modern era of movie making, where the franchise is king, sequels haven’t just become a byproduct of box office success, they’ve become an inevitability.
Nowhere is this better exemplified than in the world of horror. Deliver 90 minutes plus of scares to large swathes of the cinema-going public and the chances are an order for seconds will be up before the original movie has even left multiplexes.
Blame it on market forces and the fact movie-making is fundamentally a money-making enterprise, but the results have proven gruesome for fans, in every sense of the word.
While critically-lauded sequels like The Godfather Part II and The Empire Strikes Back were the result of careful planning and expert execution, horror sequels have, by and large, been about studios striking while the iron is hot.

Britain is a pretty spooky place. Not only is it one of the most densely haunted countries in the world, but each region is also thick with its own myths and legends. There is nothing quite as eerie as the English countryside, something I feel so nostalgic for now that I live abroad. I especially miss the lonely lanes, empty fields, and deserted beaches of my home county Suffolk, which also inspired some of the most famous ghost stories of M.R. James.
Suffolk was witchcraft country back in the day and the wicked Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins, plied his trade there. A merman was once caught in the waters near Orford and was held for interrogation at the castle, while up the coast in Blythburgh, the demon dog Black Shuck burst into the church and frazzled a few of the congregation with his fiery breath.

The timeline of the "Halloween" movies is as clear as mud. At last count, David Gordon Green's 2022 film "Halloween Ends" will be the fourth film in its particular continuity, stemming from the 1978 original, but then skipping straight to the 2018 film.
