Gregg Sulkin, best known for TV roles in Pretty Little Liars and Faking It, plays a rich Long Island teen in Kevin Asch’s feature Affluenza.
Gregg Sulkin On 'Affluenza'
Sulkin’s character Dylan is shrouded in wealth and mystery – a Great Gatsby like figure, according to the 22-year-old actor. Beneath the veil of his affluence, Dylan’s hiding a profound lonliness for which no amount of money can compensate.
“As the movie goes on you really see who Dylan actually is and he’s not as cool and he’s not as popular as people think,” Sulkin told uInterview exclusively. “He’s actually quite dark and isolated, kind of a lone figure, which kind of proves that you can have as much money in the world, but if you don’t have friendship, you really have nothing and no community.”

A new clip from indie drama Affluenza features Transformers: Age of Extinction star Nicola Peltz as a New York socialite.
Affluenza stars Ben Rosenfield as a young photographer who finds himself wrapped up in the Long Island social scene when he moves in with his sultry socialite cousin (Peltz) during the financial crisis of 2008.
The Flash's Grant Gustin has a supporting role as an arrogant jock who doesn't take kindly to his girlfriend's wandering eye.
Director Kevin Asch developed the story for Affluenza and worked on the screenplay with Antonio Macia (Anne B Real).
The pair previously collaborated on the Jesse Eisenberg-starring religious drama Holy Rollers in 2010.
Affluenza opens today (July 11) in the Us. No UK release date has been set.

A Long Way Down
R, 1 Hr., 36 Mins.
A bright cast spackles this uneven Nick Hornby adaptation about a quartet of suicidal strangers (Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul, and Imogen Poots) who meet on a London rooftop one New Year’s Eve and quickly become a fractured family. With an ace troupe like that, there are affecting moments, to be sure. But the movie criminally wastes Sam Neill and Rosamund Pike in barely there supporting roles, and the picture has exactly two tones: grim and gooey. They do not coexist harmoniously. Many who hear about Affluenza may at first assume that the movie is a look inside the thoroughly depressing case of Ethan Couch, a Texas teen who drove drunk and caused a crash, killing four and injuring two. During his trial, a psychologist argued Couch was a victim of “affluenza,” as the product of rich parents who never set boundaries for him or taught him to understand the relationship between actions and consequences. The case made national headlines when the judge sentenced him to ten years of probation and therapy in a cushy rehab facility – a sentence that defied basic ideas of both logic and justice with its leniency.
Unfortunately, Affluenza does not explore that inflammatory case – however, its teenage subjects are certainly comparable to Couch. Set in pre-recession 2008 on privileged Long Island, the film follows an aspiring photographer named Fisher (Ben Rosenfield) who comes to stay with his upper-class relatives after his parents divorce.

Affluenza (n) - a psychological malaise supposedly affecting wealthy young people, symptoms of which include a lack of motivation, feelings of guilt, and a sense of isolation. While that doesn’t sound like a the most pressing disease, filmmaker Kevin Asch uses the condition to highlight a time in America where the rich got richer, markets crashed, and the only ones saved were those lucky enough to receive a golden parachute. There’s a sad truth to Affluenza, and Asch doesn’t shy away from its dirtiest parts.

It's hard to say exactly whom writer-director Kevin Asch is trying to warn with Affluenza, a teen drama about wealthy Hampton-ites that engages in more than a little virtuous tut-tutting. Is he cautioning a younger generation, in danger of taking their privilege for granted? Or, as suggested by a businessman who berates photographer and sometime weed dealer Fisher (Ben Rosenfield) in the opening scene, their laissez-faire parents? Or is the audience simply being warned away from types like Fisher’s host for the summer, a manic uncle played by Steve Guttenberg whose off-putting pencil mustache alone makes him a dubious role model? Whoever it’s aimed at, the film is more focused on lamenting American culture than correcting it. Affluenza is set in 2008 on...

Before he dons the scarlet mask as “The Flash” on The CW this fall, Grant Gustin shows a different side of himself in “Affluenza.” The psychological issue of the same name is defined as a lack of drive or motivation among wealthy young people, often associated with guilt and a sense of isolation. Loosely based on “The Great Gatsby,” this film is a story of the darker side of the world of excess. See video: The CW's First Look Trailers: New Shows ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ‘The Flash’ In the trailer for the film by director Kevin Asch, the psychological condition definitely seems.

Affluenza, directed by Kevin Asch (Holy Rollers), is going to be sold largely as a film starring Nicola Peltz (Transformers: Age of Extinction, "Bates Motel"), but what had me doing a double take is the fact it stars Steve Guttenberg, whom I didn't even know was still acting, but one look at his IMDb profile shows he never quit, he's simply not in any movies people actually watch. Now before watching this trailer I thought this movie might be about that Texas teen that got drunk, drove and killed four people and ultimately got off because he suffered from "affluenza" -- "the product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for the boy." Maybe that had something to do with the movie, which seems to focus on how great it is to be rich until it's not great to be rich, or maybe they're just using the buzz word to create a buzzy title,...

There’s no other entertainment quite like watching a sweet, young high schooler with a broken heart fall prey to a psychotic predator and be controlled, manipulated and maybe even killed. That’s the conceit behind the new Lifetime movie A Mother’s Nightmare that premieres this Saturday.
But which role is Grant Gustin playing? After his memorable smarminess as Sebastian Smythe on Glee last season, you’d think he’d be the titular nightmare but, instead, Gustin shows a different side of himself as naïve Chris, who becomes the target of whack-job Vanessa (90210’s Jessica Lowndes) in the film.
It's been over six months since our interview and photo spread with Gustin, so we figured it was time to catch up with the 22-year-old actor to talk about his new role, the other new project he’s excited about and, of course, his take on whether we'll see Sebastian...

Hold onto your hats ladies and gentlemen, because The Gute may be coming back to movie screens near you; THR brings us the news that Steve Guttenberg and Samantha Mathis are the latest to join the cast of Affluenza, the Holy Rollers follow-up from director Kevin Asch and screenwriter Antonio Macia. The movie, which draws inspiration from the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby (which itself is getting the 3D, big-screen treatment this year), will take place right before the financial meltdown that nearly destroyed the United States in 2008.
According to Asch himself, Affluenza will deal with an American society that “was unprepared and unwilling to accept the death of the American dream.” Guttenberg and Mathis join a cast that includes Ben Rosenfield as main character Fisher Miller, Nicola Peltz, and Glee stalwart Grant Gustin, among many others. While the word’s still out on his return to Lima, Ohio, Glee‘s Grant Gustin‘s about to make his mark in theaters. Known for his days as the villainous Sebastian Symthe on television’s musical sensation, Gustin has just landed the lead in the indie Affluenza, set to start production next week in Manhattan and Great Neck, N.Y. But aside from that confirmed role, there’s also the possibility of a major break-out coming his way.

Chicago – One of the best things that can be said about Bryan Storkel’s documentary, “Holy Rollers,” is that it features Christians who don’t fit the profile of religious stereotypes. Their morally questionable line of work does raise some provocative questions, but Storkel resists any opportunity to condescend to his human subjects. His evenhanded approach results in a picture that could be interpreted by some as a recruitment video and by others as a cautionary tale.

Holy Rollers
Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Bartha, Danny A. Abeckaser, Ari Graynor | Written by Antonio Macia | Directed by Kevin Asch
Who doesn’t love a good old true-life story? In particular, who doesn’t love a true-life story that involves drugs? And who doesn’t love a true-life story that not only involves drugs but also involves Hasidic Jews? On paper then, Holy Rollers would seem to have all the right ingredients to be a fun-filled, watchable romp. Unfortunately, things don’t play out quite so successfully.
Everyone’s favourite Social Networker Jesse Eisenberg stars as Sam, a Hasidic Jew living in Brooklyn with his family and amongst other members of the Orthodox community. Money being tight, he takes his friend Yosef’s (Bartha) advice and begins smuggling what he believes at first to be medicine into New York from Amsterdam. Sam quickly finds out that the ‘medicines’ are in...

The Tree Of Life (12A)
(Terrence Malick, 2011, Us) Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, Hunter McCracken, Laramie Eppler, Sean Penn, Tye Sheridan. 139 mins
Successor to Kubrick's 2001 or extended perfume ad? Either way, Malick's macro/microcosmic take on life, the universe and family life makes most films look unadventurous. Beyond the head-trip "creation of the universe" sequences, it's largely Sean Penn's impressionistic reminiscence of his conflicted childhood, rendered in gorgeous imagery, with introspective voiceovers and a dreamy intensity.
The Princess Of Montpensier (15)
(Bertrand Tavernier, 2010, Fra) Mélanie Thierry, Gaspard Ulliel, Lambert Wilson. 140 mins
There's costumes and courtliness, but this 16th-century saga remains unstuffy. Sought-after Thierry's quest for self-determination is the focus, and the treatment is modern and immediate.
Trust (15)
(David Schwimmer, 2010, Us) Liana Liberato, Clive Owen, Catherine Keener. 106 mins
Those who saw Catfish will know where this teen's online relationship with an apparently nice boy is headed. But what follows is an exercise in parent-worrying technophobia.

Released in select cinemas today is Holy Rollers, starring The Social Network's Jesse Eisenberg.
The film is inspired by real events in the late 90s when Hasidic Jews were recruited as mules to smuggle ecstasy from Europe into the United States.
Sam Gold (Jesse Eisenberg), a young Hasid from an Orthodox Brooklyn community, reluctantly follows the path his family has chosen for him, awaiting a pending arranged marriage and studying to become a Rabbi.
A charming neighbour, Yosef Zimmerman (Justin Bartha), senses Sam's resistance and propositions him to transport 'medicine' for Jackie (Danny A. Abeckaser), an Israeli gangster and drug dealer, and his girlfriend, Rachel (Ari Graynor).
Sam quickly demonstrates his business skills to his boss, Jackie, who instantly takes him under his wing. Now exposed to the exciting and gritty worlds of the Manhattan and Amsterdam nightlife, Sam begins to spiral deeper into their detrimental lifestyle, experimenting with...

Jesse Eisenberg stars in the indie comedy, Holy Rollers. Unfortunately, his star presence fails to lift a mediocre film, Michael writes...
Holy Rollers never successfully shakes off one crucial pre-viewing assumption, inspired by the puntastic title, but sustained by the set-up. This is a low budget indie flick starring Jesse Eisenberg as an awkward New Yorker, who gets embroiled in a massive drug smuggling operation, maintained by Hasidic Jews. In other hands, this could be a fish out of water, coming of age comedy, maybe with some gross-out and stoner overtones. But actually, Kevin Asch's debut feature is the polar opposite. It's a tragic crime drama, with ambitions of being a modern religious fable.
Holy Rollers' roots are in reality, being based on the true story of the ecstasy smuggling ring, which fooled airport security in the late 90s by hiding pills in the traditional dress of Hasidic Jewish travellers.

It’s taken almost 18 months for the independent film Holy Rollers to hit U.K. shores having debuted at last year’s Sundance Film Festival where the film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize but finally we Brits can see the crime drama from Friday. We Brits have to be so patient these days don’t we?

We caught up for a chat with Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg to talk about Holy Rollers, out this week, and much, much more...
Back in February, on the day before the BAFTAs, we had the chance to speak with Best Actor nominee, Jesse Eisenberg. He'd been nominated for his stunning performance as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, but the interview was in anticipation of Eisenberg's starring role in another, much smaller film, which is out this week. Produced on a shoestring budget, Holy Rollers retells the real-life story of a group of Hassidic Jews, who operate a drug smuggling operation in late-90s New York.
We spoke with Eisenberg (who's every bit as hyperactive, nervously energetic, and smart as his on-screen turns would have you believe) about Holy Rollers, working with directors from Wes Craven to Fred Durst, and whether we should expect Zombieland 2 anytime soon...

Jesse Eisenberg feels he did a ''better job'' in 'Holy Rollers' than 'The Social Network'. The 27-year-old actor - who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the movie about the founding of Facebook - thinks it is odd the film received ''that kind of attention'' because he doesn't believe his part in the David Fincher-directed drama is one of his best performances when compared to the Kevin Asch crime project about an Orthodox Jewish boy who becomes a drug dealer. He said: ''I've never been in a movie that's received that kind of...

As far as flawed ideas go, prohibition is up there with “The saucers are coming! Quick, drink this!” in terms of sheer, naked stupidity. That creating an entire criminal underclass and lining the pockets of violent, dangerous people is seen as preferable to having someone enjoy a Gin Fizz speaks volumes about how collectively wrong-headed humans can be.
Humanity, however, does tend to counter idiocy, pain and suffering with art, music and literature. Alcohol prohibition in the United States helped jazz music to spread across the country as speakeasies blossomed, while Tommy-gun-toting gangsters in the mould of Al Capone have become instantly-recognisable archetypes in their own right. The War On Drugs has had a similar effect, showing cinema-goers a world of wrongdoers from lovable wasters Cheech and Chong to the crazy-eyed morally-bankrupt cop played by Nic Cage in Bad Lieutenant.

Holy Rollers
Directed by Kevin Asch
2010, USA, 93 mins.
The title of this film does not refer to Pentecostal churchgoers. Rather, it refers to Hasidic Jews smuggling ecstasy during the late nineties. An unlikely story inspired by actual events (a market that Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Sam Gold, seems to have cornered), Holy Rollers is as much about pressure to succeed and build a family as it is about drugs.
Holy Rollers is an atypical drug movie. There are no car chases, no police investigations, no shooting, no envy of a high-roller lifestyle – few of the usual trappings of a drug film are present here. Rather, the film focuses on Sam, the eldest son in a Hasidim family, who is struggling not just to be successful, but to be more successful than his father. This is the motivation – not a glitzy, party-driven lifestyle – that drives the film. Family and identity play a greater role for Sam.

One minute Jesse Eisenberg was a small-time actor in indie movies, the next he was starring in the film that defined a decade. He talks about life after The Social Network and why he'll never be comfortable with success
From a certain perspective, Jesse Eisenberg's acting career resembles a darkly ironic cosmic joke, with Eisenberg as the victim. The story goes like this: you are a shy and awkward child, deeply uncomfortable in your skin. Then, one day, you discover acting, which you find "enormously comforting". Performing a prescribed role soothes your paralysing self-consciousness; hiding inside a character, you get the attention you crave, minus the deer-in-the-headlights panic of trying to "be yourself". Unsurprisingly, you prove particularly good at portraying fiercely intelligent but emotionally semi-detached geeks, angry at the self-assured world from which they, like you, feel excluded. You do it so well that eventually, at 27, you're cast in...

From Brazilian parrot to drug mule, Jesse Eisenberg is keeping us all guessing post The Social Network. His next movie, Holy Rollers, gives him a chance to show once again what a reliable performer he is, with a narrative arc that carries him from an orthodox upbring straight onto the Interpol database. Check out the film's new UK trailer below to see what we mean.Eisenberg plays Sam Gold, a young Orthodox Jewish man from Brooklyn who's seduced into work as a 'medicine' trafficker by the well-connected Yosef (Justin Bartha). Persuaded to smuggle ecstasy from Amsterdam back into the Us, he's happy to find a definite upside to the world of crime. Unfortunately, said upside is also the girlfriend of a heavily-armed Israeli gangster. Directed by debut filmmaker Kevin Asch, Holy Rollers was shot in 2009 and made its Sundance bow last year. It's based on a true story and should...

Femmes ruled the roost at last night's 20th annual Gotham Independent Film Awards. Debra Granik's Winter's Bone received this year's Gotham award for Best Feature, while Laura Poitras' The Oath won for Best Documentary, a deserved consolation after the film's snub on the Oscar Shortlist. [We're pleased to remind you that The Oath was funded by the Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund. And check out our interview with Granik here.] Considered the first major ceremony of the awards season, Oscar gold is glinting for Winter's Bone, which also received the Best Ensemble Performance award. Though Jennifer Lawrence lost out to Ronald Bronstein (Daddy Longlegs) in the Breakthrough Performance category, Bone's two Gothams and Best Picture win at Sundance this January should make it a shoo-in for a spot in the Oscar's Best Picture Top Ten. Tough drama Winter's Bone is fast emerging as an Oscar favourite after landing the Best Feature title at the 2010 Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York on Monday.
Director Debra Granik's acclaimed new movie stars Jennifer Lawrence as an impoverished teen who goes in search of her drug dealer father after learning he's put the family home up as a bail bond.
The chilling tale proved to be a hit with judges at the Gotham event, which is considered by many to open the awards season, taking home the best picture award ahead of Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan and Annette Bening and Julianne Moore's family drama The Kids Are All Right. Blue Valentine and Let Me In were also nominated in the category.
Winter's Bone went on to claim the Best Ensemble Performance for its cast, which also includes John Hawkes, Dale Dickey and Lauren Sweetser, although Lawrence lost out on the Breakthrough Actor title to Daddy Longlegs star Ronald Bronstein.
Speaking about her film's win, Granik tells the Hollywood Reporter, "The year started with getting recognition at Sundance, so that was a very intense night. It doesn't get any easier, though, to win awards."
Kevin Asch was named Breakthrough Director for Holy Rollers, a drama about an Orthodox Jew who embarks on a career as a drug pusher, while Laura Poitras' study on the war on terrorism in The Oath was hailed as Best Documentary.
Education system documentary Waiting For Superman earned the Festival Genius Audience Award, which was determined by online voting, and Mike Ott's Littlerock scored the prize for Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You.
In addition to the competitive awards, Hilary Swank, Robert Duvall, Aronofsky and movie mogul James Schamus were each presented with a career tribute.
Honouring his Get Low co-star Duvall, Bill Murray told the crowd, "He is better than all of you... He is better than me, too."
Black Swan star Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Leighton Meester and Anthony Mackie were also among the guests at the 20th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards, hosted by Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci and held at Manhattan's Cipriani Wall Street restaurant.
Last year's Best Feature winner, The Hurt Locker, went on to win the Academy Awards' Best Picture prize.

Winter's Tale went on to claim the Best Ensemble Performance for its cast, which also includes John Hawkes, Dale Dickey and Lauren Sweetser, although Lawrence lost out on the Breakthrough Actor title to Daddy Longlegs star Ronald Bronstein.
