Abby Ryder Forstson was so excited by the possibility of being cast in “Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret,” she wrote a letter to the filmmakers expressing how she related to the 12-year-old protagonist at the center of Judy Blume’s beloved book. Then, after being cast, she corresponded with Margaret’s onscreen grandmother, Kathy Bates, via letters.
For the first time, Variety is sharing Fortson’s correspondence, starting with the letter she sent to writer-director Kelly Fremon Craig and producers James L. Brooks and Julie Ansell after their first meeting.
In the note, Fortson talks about how much she relates to Margaret Simons, who feels adrift due to relocating to a new school and her parents’ interfaith marriage; her mother is Christian and her father is Jewish. Wrote Forster: “I get made fun of, I don’t have a ton of good friends, I don’t really have a religion,...

The first trailer for Lionsgate’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s beloved young adult classic Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret dropped on Thursday.
Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates and Benny Safdie star along with newcomer Abby Ryder Fortson in the big-screen take, written and directed by Edge of Seventeen helmer Kelly Fremon Craig. In the two-minute look at the 1970s-set film, Fortson portrays 11-year-old Margaret, uprooted from her New York City home where she’s close to her grandmother, Sylvia (Kathy Bates), and moved to the New Jersey suburbs by her parents, played by McAdams and Safdie.
It’s a tricky adjustment that sees Margaret having to quickly make new friends at a new school — an endeavor that becomes even more complicated by the fact that she’s “going through the messy and tumultuous throes of puberty,” according to the film’s loglines. It’s an awkwardly relatable...

The “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” film is written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, best known for her 2016 feature directorial debut “Edge of Seventeen.” The movie closely follows the plot of the original Blume novel, which focuses on 11 year-old Margaret Simon, a sixth grader who moves with her parents from New York City to the suburb of Farbrook, N.J. A child of an interfaith marriage — between a Jewish father and a Christian mother — Margaret struggles with her relationship to religion, and prays frequently to God despite living in a secular household. The book follows Margaret as she goes on a spiritual journey, while adjusting to her new surroundings and dealing with the onset of puberty.

Rachel McAdams and Abby Ryder Fortson have been cast in “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” an adaptation of Judy Blume’s beloved coming-of-age book.
Fortson will play Margaret Simon, a sixth-grade girl who is going through puberty and searches the universe for any answers she can find. McAdams is portraying Margaret’s mother, Barbara.
The movie, set up at Lionsgate, will be written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig. It’s expected to begin production in April.
“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” was first published in 1970 and remains hugely popular among young, budding readers. Blume has long been opposed to screen adaptations of her seminal work, a notable list that includes “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing,” “Blubber,” “Forever” and “Tiger Eyes.” However, the upcoming version of “Are You There God?” — especially the casting — comes with Blume’s blessing.
“Abby is funny and tender, strong yet vulnerable.

Faced with a seemingly impenetrable immigration system, Oscar struggles to navigate a path to freedom, with a journalist and his uncle, himself a recent immigrant, as his only lifelines.

HBO Films has acquired the worldwide rights to director-writer Daniel Sawka’s timely drama feature Icebox, which premiered at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Produced by Oscar- and Emmy-winning James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films and co-financed with Endeavor Content, Icebox will debut Friday, December 7 on HBO.
Filmed on location in New Mexico, the film was shot primarily in Spanish with English subtitles. It tells the story of Óscar, played by Anthony Gonzalez (Coco), a 12-year-old Honduran boy who is forced to flee his home and seek asylum in the United States, only to find himself trapped in the U.S. immigration system.
“I have seldom seen a movie so of the moment – it’s almost reportage,” said Len Amato, president, HBO Films. “Icebox gives viewers not only an opportunity to witness what it’s like inside these migrant detention centers, but also to feel the emotions of the children,...

Writer-director Daniel Sawka’s “Icebox” has been acquired by HBO Films. The feature, produced by James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films and co-financed with Endeavor Content, is set to debut Dec. 7 on HBO.

Brooks and Gracie Films teamed with Sawka to expand the project from a master’s thesis short into a feature-length film.

Exclusive: In the nearly 50 years since she wrote her groundbreaking book Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Judy Blume has turned down overtures to turn her seminal novel into a film. Finally, she has said yes.
Blume has granted the rights to producer James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films and Kelly Fremon Craig, who collaborated on The Edge Of Seventeen, the coming of age film that starred Hailee Steinfeld.
Fremon Craig wrote and made her directorial debut on that 2016 film and she’ll adapt and direct Blume’s book. Brooks and his Gracie Films will produce with Julie Ansell, Richard Sakai and Amy Brooks. Fremon Craig and Blume will also be producers. Brooks told Deadline that studios have already begun knocking, but they will wait until they have a proper screenplay before setting the film with a distributor. He and Fremon Craig were still a bit giddy about how...

Exclusive: Talk about having the pulse of an issue. Daniel Sawka first wrote and directed Icebox as a short film for his American Film Institute thesis project in 2016. The pic ended up being shortlisted for a 2018 Oscar, won a jury prize at AFI Fest and screened at Telluride. At some point James L. Brooks saw it, leading to he and his Gracie Films teaming with Sawka to develop it into a feature film.
That result is Icebox, which is having its world premiere Sunday in the Discovery section of the Toronto Film Festival. It lands smack in the middle of national outrage over the U.S. government’s controversial polices of separating families trying to cross the border (and the government’s seeming ineptness in reuniting children and their parents after the fact).
The film, based on research and interviews with child migrants, Border Patrol officers and immigration lawyers, is told...

Teen comedies can be annoying, but every year seems to bring a good one. What work nicely are thoughtful movies that acknowledge the modern problems of teens in such a highly sexualized world, and place the sexual aspects in a non-exploitative context. I have been entertained and moved by Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick in Election, Ellen Page in Juno and Thomas Mann and Olivia Cooke in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. This year’s The Edge of Seventeen is a bright writing-directing...

Hailee Steinfeld is in negotiations to star in Stx Entertainment's coming-of-age film, previously called Besties. James L. Brooks' Gracie Films has made a mid six-figure preemptive deal for Besties, a spec script by Kelly Fremon. Part of the deal is she's attached to make her directing debut. The script is a John Hughes-style comedy about two high school girls who are best friends until one dates the other's older brother, who is totally his sister's nemesis. Brooks was the first person the script got sent to, and he's expected to mentor Fremon as she makes the jump to director. Gracie made the buy, but the company's films go through Sony Pictures. Brooks will produce with Julie Ansell. As a writer, Fremon has one produced feature credit, the 2009 Fox Searchlight comedy Post Grad. She has also written The Good Life, another script for Searchlight, and The Best Mistakes for Level 1. On the small screen, Fremon wrote the pilot Lovehamption for the CW and Alloy Entertainment...
