We will, we will block you. It seems that concert footage of Queen is being flagged and removed from social media platforms. And while this might initially seem like the doing of Queen, guitarist Brian May is far from supporting it, even apologizing to fans who have tried to share their favorite live songs online.
Brian May — who, along with Roger Taylor, has been a member of Queen since 1970 — took to Instagram to address the concern, saying Universal has turned “Draconian” through their task. But he wants to break free from the assumption he and the band had any say in removing the videos. “The decision to take these videos down certainly hasn’t come from us, the band. hopefully we will get an answer soon. Meanwhile, be extra careful and l’m sorry you good folks of good intentions have been put in this position.”

Brian May is remembering his “hero” and friend Jeff Beck for his undefined talent, following his “sudden” death.
The legendary rock guitarist, who played with the Yardbirds and fronted The Jeff Beck Group, “peacefully passed away” on Tuesday (10 January), after “suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis”, his representative said.
News of his passing has rocked the music world and beyond, with fellow musicians Ozzy Osbourne, David Gilmour and Mick Jagger leading tributes.
May, the co-founder and lead guitarist of British rock band Queen, is the latest music industry legend to share his “thoughts on the sad loss of a guitar genius and friend, Jeff Beck”, in an Instagram video.
“I’m struggling today because everyone wants to talk about Jeff, of course, and they want to talk to me. But I don’t really feel up to talking to the press and media about it,” May began.

Queen guitarist Brian May was among artists, designers, community leaders and members of England’s women’s soccer team on the U.K.’s New Year’s Honors list.
More than 1,100 people were included on the list announced Friday, which was the first to be signed off by King Charles III, the Associated Press reported. The list is an annual tradition in the country, celebrating people’s achievements and service.
May received a knighthood for services to music and his charity work. In response to the recognition, the former Queen guitarist, who also holds a doctorate in astrophysics, said, “I will regard the knighthood not so much as a reward, but more as a charge — a commission — for me to continue to fight for justice — to be a voice for those who have no voice. I will endeavour to be worthy — to be that Knight in Shining Armour.

Brian May, lead guitarist for Queen, revealed he has tested positive for Covid.
An Instagram post by the musician pictured what he called the “dreaded double red line” on a test device, indicating a positive result. (See the post below.)
“Yep,” he wrote. “The shocking day finally came for me. The dreaded double red line. And yes – definitely No sympathy please – it has been a truly horrible few days, but I’m Ok. And I will tell the tale. Please take extra care out there, good folks. This thing is incredibly transmissible. You really do Not want it messing up Your Christmas. With love – Bri.”
May is in good company, unfortunately. The number of new Covid infections in the UK has reached record levels as the Omicron variant has taken hold. A number of businesses, especially bars and restaurants where infection can spread, have closed due to the outbreak.

Leading UK musicians include Ed Sheeran, Elton John and Liam Gallagher have signed a letter stating that the UK government’s Brexit deal has failed the country’s performing artists.
In the open letter, published by The Times, the group criticize the end of free movement for touring bands. It also suggests the costs and bureaucracy arising from the new system will make touring “unviable”, in particular for emerging musicians.
Following the culmination of the Brexit transition period, workers are no longer guaranteed visa-free travel and may need to apply for additional work permits for performances in certain countries.
As Deadline reported last week, the UK gov and the EU are locked in a war of denials over who is to blame for the situation. Pressure has been mounting for the two parties to agree an exemption for performers but this has yet to be struck.

If you grew up with Frank Zappa, and he loomed large in your youth-cultural pop rebel sandbox (as he did in mine), he seemed to be many things at once. The outrageous hippie with the thick black T-shaped goatee who looked weird and threatening enough to represent something very far removed from peace and love. The avant rock ‘n’ roll absurdist who led the band of wilted flower children known as the Mothers of Invention. The scandalous joker seated half-naked on a toilet seat in the iconic ’60s poster that read “Phi Zappa Krappa.” The airy and sophisticated pop-rock-jazz prodigy who, starting around the time of “Hot Rats” (1969), began to put together songs that had the intricate quality of hypnotic musical Tinkertoy. The band leader who whipped his musicians into learning those how-many-notes-can-i-jam-into-three-seconds tracks with the bop-till-you-drop discipline of a counterculture Duke Ellington. The tall skinny long-haired guitar god who...

The true breakdown of society appears to have begun in Australia around 1979, when George Miller made this berserk extrapolation of every toxic futurist prediction on the books. Out on the open road the only thing saving society from horrifying motorized gang violence is a corps of equally crazed patrolmen in their interceptor vehicles. With this picture Mel Gibson went from zero to ninety on the star-meters, even though U.S. distribution fell to the failing American International Pictures. Kino gathers up the best existing extras, and includes audio mixes in two separate languages — incomprehensible Australian and marginally understandable Australian. With the non-stop action on screen, who cares?

Rock legend Eddie Van Halen, lead guitarist of the group Van Halen, died of cancer at the age of 65, according to Variety.
“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning” his son, Wolf Van Halen, announced on Twitter. “He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.”
The band Van Halen often appeared to be an unstable unit. Original lead vocalist David Lee Roth gave way to Sammy Hagar before reuniting with the band. But Eddie Van Halen and his drummer brother, Alex, were always there, from the beginning and through their 12 studio albums. They formed the band in 1972, and by 1974, its classic lineup, Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony was in place. They were...

Back in January, Dirty Honey singer Marc Labelle was wearing a vintage-looking Aerosmith T-shirt onstage at Nashville’s Basement East while belting out the classic-rockers’ 1976 hit “Last Child.” It was a bit on the nose, but that’s the unabashed appeal of this L.A.-based band, a Seventies/Eighties rock outfit that isn’t afraid to wear its influences — quite literally — on their sleeve.
Dirty Honey came together in 2017 when Labelle, a New York native, met guitarist John Notto at the singer’s regular covers gig at a Santa Monica bar.

Don’t stop him now. Queen’s Brian May has revealed a big scare from what he termed a “small heart atttack,” but is on the mend and “ready to rock.”
In an Instagram post, the co-founder of Queen and a collaborator on 2018’s smash Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, said the heart attack discovery was made after he was treated earlier this month for a tear to his gluteus maximus during a moment of “over-enthusiastic gardening.”
May on Instagram said he wanted to “tell the truth about what happened” after “people were making up stories out there.” Says May in the post (see it below), “I thought I was a healthy guy… I keep fit… anyway in the middle of the whole saga of the painful backside, I had a small heart attack.”
While he did have a rip in his gluteus maximus, a week later May said he was still in “real agony.

People forget how much of a massive success Bohemian Rhapsody was back in 2018. The Queen biopic earned more than $900 million worldwide off of a budget of $55 million. It won four Oscars that year, too, including Best Actor for star Rami Malek and who knows how many more Queen albums were sold following its release.
The movie did run into trouble during production, of course, when director Bryan Singer was fired due to erratic behavior on set and a rocky relationship with Malek. Singer was replaced by Dexter Fletcher though who finished the movie and ironically, went on to direct the Elton John biopic, Rocketman.
Despite the troubled production, such a success might warrant a sequel and according to Queen guitarist Brian May, who served as a consultant on the film alongside drummer Roger Taylor, they have discussed that possibility.
“Don’t think we didn’t think about it. We’ve talked.

It’s a logical comparison: “Rocketman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” are both biopics about British rock stars whose careers launched in the 1970s — Elton John and late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, respectively — and both were directed by Dexter Fletcher. So we had to ask the latest Academy Award winner for his thoughts.
“Ours tells the truth — even though it’s a fantasy,” John told Variety hours after picking up his second Oscar (for best original song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” with longtime cowriter Bernie Taupin) and arriving at his 28th annual benefit for his AIDS foundation in West Hollywood. “My life can’t be sugarcoated, and I didn’t want it to be.”
Irony registered: John’s fantastical approach to the biopic format proved truer to life than 2018’s best picture nominee about Mercury’s rise and untimely death from AIDS. In fact, “BoRhap” gave new meaning to...

Refresh for updates Tributes have flooded in today for Monty Python co-founder Terry Jones, who has died at the age of 77.
The celebrated UK comedic actor, director, writer, historian and advocate was fondly remembered by his Monty Python co-stars Michael Palin, John Cleese and Eric Idle.
“I loved him the moment I saw him on stage at the Edinburgh Festival in 1963,” tweeted Idle. “So many laughs, moments of total hilarity onstage and off we have all shared with him. It’s too sad if you knew him, but if you didn’t you will always smile at the many wonderfully funny moments he gave us.”
Palin described Jones as “kind, generous, supportive and passionate about living life to the full.”
“He was far more than one of the funniest writer-performers of his generation, he was the complete Renaissance comedian – writer, director, presenter, historian, brilliant children’s author, and the warmest,...

Queen have paired their rare and festive 1984 single “Thank God It’s Christmas” with a new animated video.
The visual, directed by animator Justin Moon, captures the holiday season through the perspective of an apartment building, with all the tenants celebrating Christmas in their own unique ways. At video’s end, the tenants congregate on the building’s roof to watch the snow fall and the Northern Lights.

“Being in Queen now feels like the old times because it has become as big as the old times,” Brian May told Rolling Stone in 2017. The band was still a year out from the release of Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic that would raise its pop-cultural capital even further. But even then, decades after the death of frontman Freddie Mercury, the guitarist felt like they were on top of the world. “I feel very privileged and very fortunate that we can play arenas. Queen tapped 10,000 people from 120 countries to help them create three new music videos for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Don’t Stop Me Now” and “A Kind of Magic.”
Queen, YouTube Music, Universal Music and Hollywood Records came up with the fan music video initiative as a way to celebrate the original “Bohemian Rhapsody” clip becoming the first pre-Nineties music video to reach one billion views on YouTube.

Fat Tony dodges a hostile takeover and Chief Wiggum recognizes a clue on The Simpsons' The Fat Blue Line.

This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons Season 31 Episode 3
The Simpsons, season 31, episode 3, "The Fat Blue Line," is a supporting character-led episode, focusing on Chief Clancy Wiggum, the worst cop the state attorney's investigating officer ever had the pleasure of humiliating in front of his men. While stories focusing on secondary character stories on The Simpsons have had as mixed success as Wiggum's policing, this episode works with only minor appearances from the titular family itself.
After the couch gag recreates Queen's performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert, with Homer doing Freddie Mercury, Lisa as John Deacon, Marge as Brian May and Bart as Roger Taylor all being produced by Maggie, the episode dives straight into fast-paced comedy without coming up for air. Jason Mamoa, who...

A recent tribute concert dubbed The Bizarre World of Frank Zappa in Huntington, New York had all the markings of a concert by the rock iconoclast from nerdy fans geeking out about the night’s guitar players before the show to doo-wop intro music but with one marked problem: Frank Zappa died in 1993. The mustachioed musician at the center of it all, playing alongside erstwhile members of Zappa’s band, wasn’t a real person at all. It was a hologram.

It’s a fact, as unfortunate as it is, that Freddie Mercury died from AIDS in late 1991. It’s also a fact that Rami Malek took him an Academy Award for his portrayal of the late great singer in last year’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
In the conversation of great performances, we also know that many dedicated actors develop a spiritual connection to the roles that they play, especially when it comes to reimagining the life of a real person. It’d be safe to assume that Malek felt this to some extent, given his almost uncanny resemblance to Mercury. But apparently, that connection reached, at some point, beyond the spiritual and into the supernatural.
A recent Express article dug up an appearance with Malek on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, focusing on one strange story the actor decided to tell. The tale, on paper, was about the future Oscar-winner...

When an earthquake decimated parts of Armenia and killing between 25,000 to 50,000 people in 1988, the world was in shock. The Ussr earmarked the equivalent of billions of dollars to help rebuild, the U.S. sent medical aid and search dogs, and people from all over Europe came to help. Perhaps the most surprising fundraising effort, though, came from a who’s who of rock and metal legends calling themselves Rock Aid Armenia. The supergroup, which featured Deep Purple’s Ritchie Blackmore, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, Queen’s Brian May and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi,...

(Warning: This story contains small spoilers for Amazon’s “Good Omens.”)
Any fan of the book “Good Omens” will tell you how central a role Queen’s music played in the story of Crowley and Aziraphale, and the director of Amazon Prime Video’s TV adaptation told TheWrap just how “desperate” he was to obtain the rights to that music.
“If you know the book at all, the Queen joke is a huge one in the book and runs all the way through it,” Douglas Mackinnon told TheWrap. “I was desperate to get the music.”
A running gag throughout the book is that most of the music tapes in Crowley’s (David Tennant) car — a 1926 Bentley — are from Queen. And even the tapes that aren’t Queen still sound like “Queen-ified” versions of other artists. So pretty much every time Crowley drives his car in the Amazon series, there is...

Glen Hansard once received a nickname from his friend Nico Muhly: Earnest Strum. The name was a way for Muhly, a contemporary composer, to poke fun at the type of exceedingly sincere, traditionally-rooted folk that Hansard has mostly been making for the past dozen years, ever since he rose to unlikely mainstream fame with the success of the 2007 musical drama Once.
In recent years, Hansard himself has grown a bit restless with his reputation as a bearded balladeer. After 2018’s Between Two Shores, the latest in a steady stream of heartfelt solo records,...
