Hollywood’s five major studios’ licensing agreements with leading European pay TV operators such as the UK’s BSkyB and France’s Canal+ are to be investigated by the European Commission (EC).
EC Commissioner for Competition Policy Joaquín Almunia said the investigation would investigate the “restrictions” in agreements between film studios and pay-tv broadcasters that grant “absolute territorial exclusivity”.
It will focus on the biggest European broadcasters: BSkyB in the UK, Sky Italia in Italy, Vivendi’s Canal+ in France, Sky Deutschland in Germany and DTS in Spain.
Film studios that will be probed include 21st Century Fox, Warner Bros, Sony Pictures, NBC Universal and Paramount.
Speaking about the current “restrictions”, Almunia said: “Such provisions ensure that the films licensed by the Us studios are shown exclusively in the Member State where each broadcaster operates via satellite and the internet. They prevent access by subscribers who are located outside the licensed territory.”

Taking advantage of the local attractions, Harry Styles and Niall Horan showed up at the Barossa Valley Golf Club in Nuriootpa, Australia today (September 23).

HBO and BBC2 have given a full first season, eight half-hour episode order to Christopher Guest's new series comedy "Family Tree" reports Variety.
The story follows an aimless 30-year-old (Chris O'Dowd) who goes on a journey to discover his family roots after inheriting a mysterious box of belongings from his great-aunt.

"Bridesmaids" and "The It Crowd" star O'Dowd is keeping busy, working on a comedy spanning a 15 year period covering the Irish economic boom and bust.

"The Adventures of Tintin" dominated the nominations but it was "Rango" that received the most trophies at the 10th Visual Effects Society (Ves) awards. Stan Lee received the the Lifetime Achievement Award and visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull received the George Melies Award. Patton Oswalt hosted the event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Antonion Banderas, Lou Ferrigno, director Chris Miller, Marc Webb, and Jennifer Yuh Nelson presented awards. But the surprise appearance by Martin Scorsese was the highlight of the evening.

Paramount had a big night at the Visual Effects Society awards. We knew that Hugo was bound to do well given that the Ves Statue is already Papa Georges friendly (pictured left). But they won in other categories too thanks to Rango and Transformers. Will all three of those movies take home prizes at the Oscars? Transformers has the biggest hurdle there in all three of its categories but especially in visual effects since its battling Rise of the Planet of the Apes. "Caesar" is probably too agile to fall prey to "The Driller"

The 10th annual Visual Effects Society Awards were handed out last night, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Hugo and Rango picking up the top awards in their respective feature categories. Unlike the broad award category at the Oscars, I always like how in-depth they are here. Below you will find awards for specific CG models, environments, compositing and more.
The biggest oversight comes with The Tree of Life, a film I thought blew away anything I’d seen all year in terms of cohesive, jaw-dropping effects. They did give Douglas Trumbull the Georges Méliès award, but Terrence Malick‘s film certainly deserved more. Nonetheless, if you are looking for the best in blockbusters, it is a good round-up. Check out all the winners below via THR.

The Visual Effects Society (Ves) has weighed in with their 2012 awards and Paramount cleaned house beginning with their animated feature Rango which took home four awards followed by Hugo and Transformers: Dark of the Moon with two each. 20th Century Fox and their Oscar-frontrunner for the Visual Effects Award, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, also took home two. This is a nice bit of notoriety for Rango, which is largely considered the best seen animated movie from 2011, though not many have seen fellow animated Oscar nominees A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita, the latter of which I will actually be seeing this Friday. Rango, however, was not nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars while the other three films I mentioned above are along with fellow nominees Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Real Steel. Those two, however, can probably consider themselves on...

The visual effects that we are seeing in movies these days are absolutely mind blowing. At this point it doesn't seem like there's any excuse for a film to have bad visual effects unless the people hired lack talent, or the studio is keeping the cash in their pockets.
There's a lot of good nomination this year such as Captain America, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Out of all of these I think that Planet of the Apes might take home the top prize, those apes were incredibly freaky looking. Weta did an amazing job with this movie, and out of all the other nominations this was the movie I was most impressed by. What are your thoughts? What movie did you think have the best visual effect in 2011?
Here's the full press release with all of the nominations:

A British pub landlady has today won her legal battle with the English Premier League over her use of a foreign satellite TV decoder to show live games. Karen Murphy took her case to the European Courts of Justice after she was fined almost £8,000 for showing Premier League football in her pub in Portsmouth via an imported satellite card from Greek broadcaster Nova, which cost around a tenth of the fee normally charged by Sky. In February, advocate general Juliane Kokott said in a non-binding 'opinion' that broadcasters such as Sky should not be able to prevent customers from using cheaper foreign satellite TV equipment to watch the Premier League. The Ecj judges have today said in a preliminary ruling that national laws prohibiting the import, sale or use of foreign decoder cards are "contrary to the freedom to provide services and cannot be justified either in light (more)...

The Wolfman (Blu-ray)Universal Home Entertainment2010/Rated R & Unrated/119minsList Price $39.98 – Available June 1, 2010The phrase “bloody good time” is no doubt synonymous with The Wolfman, a remake of the 1941 classic horror film of the same name, which unlike its predecessor, has had a troubled production history. The changing of directors, score composers, editors and a delayed release date don't seem to matter much anymore since the film succeeds as an engaging popcorn picture. That's not to say the movie is without flaws and if the filmmakers had striven harder this could have been a new classic instead of a by the numbers remake. Horror fans will no doubt appreciate the blood and gore, but if the character development in the film had been fleshed out a bit the film could have been better than average. Still, in an age of soulless and stale generic fare, this picture does succeed in...

After the jump scare opening, the theatrical release of The Wolfman begins with an Emily Blunt voice over reading a letter her character has written to Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro), urging him to return home after the disappearance of his brother. The Blu-ray unrated edition opens with the same jump scare, but instead of letter writing, Blunt shows up and delivers her message in person, yet the rest of the film refers to the letter she never ends up writing, which just goes to show how silly these "unrated" home video releases truly are. Most oftentimes they add very little to the film other than making it longer -- in this case 16 minutes longer -- and give the studio a selling point. The fact this is referred to as the "Unrated Director's Cut" has me wondering if Joe Johnston even cares his name is being used in such a manner,...
