Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future and Danis Goulet’s Night Raiders lead nominees for the upcoming Dgc Awards with three each.
The Directors of Guild of Canada unveiled nominations for its 21st Dgc Awards on Nov. 5 on Friday. Del Toro, who shot Nightmare Alley mostly in and around Toronto, did not receive a nomination for best feature film direction.
But del Toro’s tribute to the film noir genre, which starred Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, did earn Oscar-nominated production designer Tamara Deverell a Dgc Awards nod in the same category, Cam McLauchlin a nomination for feature best picture editing, and best sound editing nominations for Nathan Robitaille, Jill Purdy, Dashen Naidoo, Josh Brown, Nelson Ferreira, Kayla Stewart, Craig MacLellan and Kevin Banks.

Supervising sound editor Jane Tattersall, sound designer Brennan Mercer and rerecording mixers Matthew Chan and Lou Solakofski knew the stakes were high for Paramount+ series “Halo,” based on the wildly popular Xbox video game, which for years had been trying to make the leap to movie theaters.
“There was enormous pressure,” says Tattersall of the series, which is in the middle of its nine-episode first-season run on the streamer. Also head of sound for Toronto’s Formosa Group, which was responsible for post-production sound work on the show, Tattersall says producer Sheila Hockin had told them that “it’s very important to learn not only the world of the game, but also respect the fans.” Set in the 26th century, “Halo” focuses on a cybernetically enhanced super soldier known only as Master Chief (Pablo Schreiber), who leads his fellow Spartans in defending humanity from an alien race.

The rise of pricey, VFX-heavy streaming projects in Ontario has presented the province’s postproduction industry with seemingly limitless opportunity to stretch creative talent beyond the classic mix of police and medical dramas and soaps.
As sound supervisor on Hulu critical darling The Handmaid’s Tale, Jane Tattersall was tasked with creating a bold, dystopian audio environment for the totalitarian Republic of Gilead in the upcoming third season. "The [streamers] raise the bar because they have confidence in you," says Tattersall of MGM execs. "And, in turn, we’re made to work harder and push the envelope."...

Surprise! Which 18 nominations will ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ be fighting for at 2019 Emmys? [Exclusive]
Gold Derby was the first to report back on February 11 that the third season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” will not be eligible for the 2019 Emmy Awards. That’s because Season 3 will debut on June 5, just days after the official deadline of May 31 for this year’s eligibility period. It means that the program can’t compete for Best Drama Series and neither can 2018 nominated actors Elisabeth Moss, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel and Joseph Fiennes. However, Hulu has still found a way to fight for 18 nominations at this September’s ceremony.

They were too late in airing for the 2018 Emmys but would qualify for 2019. Since there are only three installments (instead of the required six for a drama series), the studio...
