Al Hassan, who had a 40-year-plus career as a road manager for the likes of Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gormé, Tony Danza and Jim Stafford, died April 12 in Washington, his family announced. He was 87.
Hassan’s job took him across the U.S. and to Canada, Africa, Asia and Europe as he also supported Leif Garrett, Susan Anton and Nana Mouskouri, among many other entertainers.
The fifth of six children, Albert LeRoy Hassan was born on Dec. 2, 1936, and raised in the steel town of New Castle, Pennsylvania. You know, a wise man once said that sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name.
"Cheers" is one of the best and most popular sitcoms of all time. That's not hyperbole, either — critics and fans alike will sing the praises of the show until you can't stand it anymore. "Okay, I get it!" you'll say. "You love 'Cheers'! Leave me alone!" Running for 11 seasons from 1982 to 1993, and starring Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt, John Ratzenberger, Woody Harrelson, and more, "Cheers" was actually a flop during its first season, finishing last in the ratings during its premiere. Things were so bad, in fact, that the network almost pulled the plug. Eventually, though, "Cheers" found its audience, and that audience couldn't get enough of the barflies and bartenders who called the show home.
The show sprang forth from creators Glen and Les Charles and James Burrows, and as it turns out,...

Sara Ramirez’s time has ended on the Sex and the City spinoff series And Just Like That… at Max.
By the end of Season 2, Ramirez’s Che Diaz and Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) had split for good and both had moved on to explore new relationships. A source close to production revealed to Deadline last month that Che’s story had concluded, and Ramirez would not be returning for Season 3.
As Che has a strong friendship with Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), they could essentially make appearances in the future. Max declined comment in January and again for this story.
Earlier this year, the Daily Mail claimed Che was being eliminated due to Ramirez’s pro-Palestine social media posts, but sources told Deadline at the time that was false. Ramirez seemingly responded to the news with an Instagram post shared a day later that read, “Don’t let the...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: That’s $1522 Per Ape, Per Day!
Two weeks ago, when I found myself watching “Eye of the Cat” for this very column, I realized that it was a remnant of a niche subgenre that has been dormant for far too long: films about humans and animals competing for large inheritances. Despite the fact that pets have absolutely no use for human currency, it used to be perfectly acceptable to open a film with a will reading, only for a human protagonist to discover that his rich relative left their...

Comedy series “Tacoma Fd” has been canceled at TruTV after four seasons, Variety has confirmed.
The series originally debuted on the basic cabler back in 2019. The show was part of the network’s push into original scripted series, alongside other shows like “At Home With Amy Sedaris,” “I’m Sorry,” and “Bobcat Goldthwait’s Misfits & Monsters.” However, TruTV’s original programming lineup has been winnowed down to virtually nothing in the past few years, with the only original series still on the network being the hidden camera show “Impractical Jokers.”
Likewise, fellow TNets like TBS and TNT — all of which fall under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella — have gone from notable rosters of scripted shows to having none. Most recently, the TBS comedy series “Miracle Workers” was canceled after four seasons. That show featured a cast that included Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi.

The classic sitcom "Taxi" has its fair share of interesting characters that work in New York City's Sunshine Cab Company, but arguably the tender heart at its center is boxer Tony Banta, played by Tony Danza. He's not always the brightest crayon in the box, but he's full of courage and love and would do just about anything for his friends. Despite being a bit of a womanizer early on, he's never cruel or lecherous like his boss Louie (Danny DeVito), and he is a fantastic friend to his co-worker Elaine (Marilu Henner). He's also surprisingly sweet despite his punchy side gig, serving as the template for later sitcom characters like Joey from "Friends." It's truly hard to imagine "Taxi" without him.
What's even harder to imagine is the character of Tony being played by anybody else. He's warm and earnest and bounces off great against some of the more cynical comedians on the cast.

It took a savvy comedy fan to know what Andy Kaufman was doing with his career. More than a mere funnyman, Kaufman tended to satirize the trappings of standup comedy, often using his routines to play pranks on the audience. As detailed in Miloš Forman's 1999 biopic "Man on the Moon," Kaufman wanted to host a TV special that contained artificial signal "static" in the hope that viewers would get up out of their seats and whack their "broken" TV sets. That's not funny for the audience, but it's certainly funny for Kaufman.
Part of Kaufman's satirical act was a whole separate stage persona named Tony Clifton, a foul-mouthed, alcoholic lounge singer who cussed and behaved badly. Clifton was also occasionally played by Kaufman's close friend and associate Bob Zmuda, allowing Clifton and Kaufman to occasionally appear in the same room, calling the reality of the character into question. Nick Offerman has been a bit of an Emmys bridesmaid so far, as the versatile actor has been nominated three times in his career but failed to turn any of them into cold, hard wins he can put on his shelf. This year, he earned his fourth nomination — and, surprisingly, his first one as an actor. He was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for HBO’s hugely successful video-game adaptation “The Last of Us.”
In the show, Offerman appears as Bill in episode three — “Long, Long Time.” Perhaps the most emotional episode of the entire series, Offerman is front and center of the drama and truly gets a chance to show off his acting chops. Bill lives a solitary life on his compound when the epidemic breaks out. But his uneasy quiet is disturbed when Murray Bartlett‘s Frank stumbles upon the land. Bill is reluctant to help the...

Murray Bartlett is having a very special moment. After winning his first Emmy last year, the actor has followed up that victory with not one but two nominations this year as he looks to continue his hot streak. One of those bids this year is for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for “Welcome to Chippendales,” while his second comes for HBO’s drama “The Last of Us,” which amassed a whopping 25 Emmy bids. Specifically, Bartlett was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for his emotional role as Frank in episode three of the show.
That episode, titled “Long, Long Time,” was touted as one of the very best in the entire series and was certainly the most heartbreaking. The episode flashes back to Frank leaving Baltimore as the epidemic spread. Soon after, he stumbles across a protected compound belonging to Nick Offerman‘s Bill, who, at first, is reluctant...

The View hosted an epic reunion of the cast of Taxi, 45 years after the series premiered on ABC. The ladies hosted Danny DeVito, Tony Danza, Christopher Lloyd, Judd Hirsch, Marilu Henner and Carol Kane for the celebration.
“For us, from the first day, the first moment we got together, it was like a family,” said DeVito, who played Louie De Palma, about the continued popularity of the series. “We were hugging and kissing the first day and we didn’t even really know each other. We read the script and everyone was falling into place. It was miraculous. But we appreciated it and never took it for granted. We always felt like the work was the most important thing.”
Added Hirsch, who played Alex Reiger, “We said, we gotta do this. If we’re not good, it’s not gonna work. They canceled shows left and right in those years.

Who’s the boss? That title goes to Tony Danza, of course. And even John Stamos gives him credit, despite Danza sleeping with his then-girlfriend Teri Copley…
In his upcoming memoir If You Would Have Told Me (out now – buy it here), John Stamos writes that he grew suspicious of Copley cheating on him, even visiting her house one night to check on it, spotting an unfamiliar 1957 Porsche in the driveway. “The blinds are closed, but the door is slightly open…I take a peek inside and see four feet protruding from the shabby-chic, floral-print duvet that once kept me warm. My Tiny Dancer is in bed with Mr. Porsche Speedster. They are sleeping. I can’t tell who he is, but I recognize Teri’s ass barely covered by the sheets…Do I pull him out of the bed by his hair, kick him in the nuts, and beat his ass?...

John Stamos has remarried, welcomed a child, and has had success in his career again in recent years. Those high points, however, came after some dark moments. In his memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, Stamos delved into the early 2000s when his marriage to Rebecca Romijn came to an end. In the book and interviews since, Stamos has admitted to thinking Romijn was “the devil” and absolutely hating her for a long time.
John Stamos recalled thinking that Rebecca Romijn was ‘the devil’ in the wake of his divorce
John Stamos and Rebecca Romijn were married for just five years when they announced their split in 2004. Their divorce was finalized the following year. In his memoir, Stamos recalled “hating” his ex-wife for years. It wasn’t all about the divorce, though. Stamos said that he felt “emasculated” during the marriage because his career was stagnant, and Romijn’s was skyrocketing.

In John Stamos’ upcoming memoir, If You Could Have Told Me, he claims that back in the 1980s, he walked in on his then-girlfriend Teri Copley in bed with Tony Danza.
“I can’t explain it, but I would’ve rather been punched in the nose again or something because the pain is so overwhelming,” he told People. “Looking back, it’s like, probably, she wasn’t the right girl for me. So seeing him, realizing it was him and stuff, it was hard. I mean, it was awful.”
Stamos, 60, described when he found Copley asleep next to Danza, whom he didn’t immediately recognize.
At the sight of her in bed with another man, Stamos said he stumbled backward out of the room.
He recalled, “At first I was like, ‘I’m going to kick his…’ I didn’t know it was [Danza] yet. I see his abs. I’m like,...

Power never ends.
We've known that to be true for a while. And when one season ends, typically, another is right around the corner.
With Power Book II: Ghost Season 3 and Power Book IV: Force Season 2 bowing in 2023, there is just one missing from the pack. Luckily, we got some excellent news about fan-favorite Power Book III: Raising Kanan and when we'll see it back on our screens.
The anticipation is high for the spinoff, which left off with a bloody battle that has the potential to reset allegiances and change the relationship dynamics forever, especially between Raq and Kanan.

This story about “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Norman Lear has been winning Emmys for more than 50 years, so it makes perfect sense that he’s back in the race this year. His first two came in 1971 for his groundbreaking series “All in the Family,” while his fifth and sixth came in 2019 and 2020 for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” specials that included real-time reenactments of “All in the Family” episodes.
The last of those came when he was 98 years old, making him the oldest Emmy winner in history. So when Lear turned 100 in the summer of 2022, it made sense that ABC, the network that aired “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” would embrace the ensuing tribute special “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter,” and...

William Friedkin, the Oscar-winning director behind The Exorcist, The French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A., The Boys in the Band, and more, is dead at 87. Friedkin died in Los Angeles, said his wife, former producer and studio head Sherry Lansing.
Born on August 29, 1935, in Chicago, Friedkin started directing television before disgusting audiences with projectile pea soup and dealings with demons. In the mid-’60s, Friedkin shot an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Hour and helmed various telefilms. Before the era was over, he got behind the camera for features like Good Times (1967), The Birthday Party (1968), and The Night They Raided Minsky’s (1968).
He started the ’70s off with a band by directing The Boys in the Band. With his name already on the lips of executives everywhere, he moved on to The French Connection, a show-stopping thriller starring Gene Hackman as Detective Popeye Doyle. The French Connection won multiple Oscars,...

[This story contains some spoilers from And Just Like That season two, episode five, “Trick or Treat”.]
Sara Ramirez doesn’t know what it’s like to have a pilot based on their life, but the And Just Like That star knows someone who does.
“When [the And Just Like That writers] wrote this, I was like, ‘Ok, this sounds like that thing that happened to that person that I knew,'” Ramirez, who plays Che Diaz, the Max series’ resident nonbinary, straight-shooter comedian and podcaster, told The Hollywood Reporter about their character’s early season two arc. (The interview was conducted before the July 13 SAG-AFTRA strike). “They were hired by a certain network to do a sitcom of their life, and interestingly enough, they had very similar experiences. Not the same as Che, but similar in that they were being projected on to.”
Early in the Sex and the City continuation’s second season, Che is grappling with a new...

Seasons three through six of Friends had some of Chandler Bing’s funniest and most character-defining moments. There he is handcuffed, without pants, to a filing cabinet; remaining in “time out” in a box for nearly a full episode; hooking up with—and later marrying—Monica…We all remember them fondly. The one who doesn’t? Matthew Perry, who says these seasons were a blur due to his problems with substance abuse.
Wtf Happened to…Matthew Perry?
But to truly understand what the fuck happened to Matthew Perry, we go back to the beginning. And the beginning began when he was born on August 19th in Williamstown, Ma, the son of two prominent people: actor John Bennett Perry and mother Suzanne, who later served as press secretary to Canadian Pm Pierre Trudeau.
Perry developed an interest in acting after he served it up on the tennis court as a youth,...
