The “Poker Face” star boards the project with his brother Peter Bratt and Alpita Patel, all under their production banner 5 Stick Films. “Wings of Dust” took the 2023 gold medal at the Student Academy Awards, telling the story of a Peruvian indigenous journalist who risks his life to protect the natural resources of ancestral lands.

The subject of “Wings of Dust” is Vidal Merma, a journalist seeking to combat a new threat from multinational mining companies. Both Ghiotto and Merma were on hand to accept the Student Academy Award this year.

André Braugher has died. The two-time Emmy-winning star of series including Homicide: Life on the Street, Men of a Certain Age and Brooklyn Nine-Nine was 61.
Braugher, whose first film role came alongside Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington in the Ed Zwick-directed Glory, died Monday after a brief illness.
While Braugher peppered his résumé with comedies, many will remember him for his ferocious portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street. Put him in “the box,” sweating out and outsmarting crime suspects in the interrogation room, and you were looking at a weekly dose of tour de force acting, as good as it got on television during that time. He won an Emmy for that show he starred in from 1992-98. His wife, Ami Brabson, recurred as Pembleton’s wife on Homicide.

Rest easy, the world is safe from evil henchmen once again. After an exhaustive search, Warner Bros. and DC Studios have finally settled on a new Superman. David Corenswet will be taking on his first major leading role as the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.

Corenswet has some big tights to fill in the role that has been played by a host of actors on film and TV … and radio.

This Skull Island review contains no spoilers.
Skull Island must be one of the worst fictional places to become stranded in. Any human’s small stature compared to the gigantic carnivorous creatures and deadly terrains inhabited bode low chances for survival. Oh, yeah, and a kaiju-sized gorilla protects the island from every threat that comes its way.
For such an exciting land of wonder and mystery, only the most boring people of various one-note archetypes ever come across it. Such is the case with Netflix‘s animated series Skull Island, the first television venture for Legendary’s ever-expansive MonsterVerse franchise where Kong and Godzilla reside. For some reason, the anime-influenced series featuring the king of Hollow Earth makes Kong come second in service for mediocre human drama and Nickelodeon-styled humor with such little punch.

This article contains spoilers for Skull Island.
As adult animation has started to become much more adventurous, daring, and diverse, streamers like Netflix are willing to take chances on shows and genres they wouldn’t have touched in the past. A great example of this is the exciting, aesthetically-rich MonsterVerse anime Skull Island. This cartoon is based upon the King Kong universe, specifically 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and all that goes along with it, giving a peek into the lives of several shipwrecked individuals who get a little too up close and comfortable with Kong and the many other monsters that inhabit the titular block of land.
Even though the first season has a good amount of character development for the main cast of protagonists, the stars of the show are certainly the colossal mutants that are on the prowl around Skull Island. There are so many monsters that the...

A show like “Skull Island” usually gets bogged down by demands and expectations. The new animated Netflix series isn’t about King Kong, but the big fella definitely makes his presence known.
Given that this eight-episode season exists within a broader umbrella that also encompasses kaiju of all kinds, you’d expect that series creator and showrunner Brian Duffield would have to wade through an ocean of demands and limitations. Instead, writing “Skull Island” became a chance to focus on a new batch of explorers who find themselves on Kong’s home island and discover otherworldly creatures dotting its beaches and forests.
Duffield said that his experience on “Skull Island” wasn’t hampered by the usual meddling and franchise maintenance preciousness that we’ve come to associate with high-profile shows that have become brand extensions, regardless of what medium they’re presented. The biggest “Skull Island” sticking point was the...

That Legendary Television and Netflix’s animated series “Skull Island” comes from creator/writer/executive producer Brian Duffield makes perfect sense. The writer behind Underwater, Love and Monsters, and Spontaneous has already established an affinity for larger-than-life monsters, a sense of adventure, and an uncanny knack for tugging at the heartstrings in the process. All three of those elements capture the essence of the monstrously sized yet tender-hearted King Kong, and they’re at the core of “Skull Island,” a lighthearted standalone series that goes big on nonstop monster mayhem.
“Skull Island” hits the ground running with an action-heavy sequence introducing wild teen Annie (Mae Whitman) as she evades her gun-toting captors from a sea vessel. As the military-like bunch pursues Annie to shore, another group of erstwhile researchers and adventurers also wash ashore when a massive cephalopod-like creature capsizes their boat. The survivors all find themselves on the treacherous Skull Island.

Poker Face pulled off many things in its debut season. With its murder-mystery-of-the-week plot in a new spin on the detective genre, the Natasha Lyonne-starring Peacock series from Rian Johnson revived the concept of procedural television for streaming, saw Benjamin Bratt turn a catchy Blues Traveler song into a poetic monologue and recruited Star Wars legend Phil Tippett for one episode’s special effects. But perhaps most impressive, Poker Face assembled an eye-popping roster of guest stars.

On Peacock’s murder mystery/comedy hybrid “Poker Face,” not only are the actors, writers and directors pivotal to the success of the show, but the artisans toiling behind the scenes are of course some of the real stars of the show. To answer that question and many more, we celebrated the the show’s acclaimed first season with a special 40-minute “making of” roundtable discussion with costume designer Trayce Gigi Field, production designer Judy Rhee, makeup department head Amy L. "We need to get off this island!" Welcome back to his island. Netflix has launched the full official trailer for a badass anime series called Skull Island, set within the same Legendary Monsterverse as the Kong: Skull Island movie a few years ago. Arriving to watch later in June. Skull Island is a thrilling adventure series that follows a group of good-hearted explorers who fish a drowning girl out of the ocean, having no idea that they’ve found themselves on a collision course with Skull Island — the most dangerous place on Earth — the mysterious home to strange beasts and terrifying monsters, including the greatest titan of them all: Kong. The voice cast includes Nicolas Cantu, Mae Whitman, Darren Barnet, Benjamin Bratt, and Betty Gilpin. It's set after the movie, and looks like a gnarly (and super brutal) creation acting as a standalone survival story with all kinds of creatures and characters and more.

In a studio overlooking Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, Rian Johnson is strapped to a lie detector machine. Next to him at the controls sits Natasha Lyonne, twiddling the device’s knobs with all the sinister intent of a supervillain. This photoshoot tableau is, of course, ripped right from the Meet the Parents Ben Stiller-Robert De Niro interrogation scene. Next, in an homage to the pithiest of TV detective tropes, Lyonne will pose at a typewriter, fake-talking into a rotary-dial phone. The visual nod this time goes to Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote.
In fact, the late, great Lansbury is connective tissue for Johnson and Lyonne. Lansbury and Lyonne appeared briefly together in Johnson’s film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, on a Zoom call playing the mystery game Among Us with Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc.

One of the hottest Emmy contenders for the 2023 comedy categories is “Poker Face” for NBC and Peacock. Created by Rian Johnson, the mystery show stars Emmy nominee Natasha Lyonne as Charlie, who has an extraordinary ability to determine if someone is lying. That is not good news for the murderers she encounters on her cross-country escape from a threat in Las Vegas.
Each guest star is virtually a lead performer for their one and only episode of the 10 first season installments. "Welcome back to his island." The next chapter of the Monsterverse begins. Netflix has revealed a teaser trailer for an anime series called Skull Island, set within the same Legendary Monsterverse as the Kong: Skull Island movie a few years ago. This looks rad! They end up shipwrecked on the island and will battle its many gnarly creatures. The voice cast includes Nicolas Cantu, Mae Whitman, Darren Barnet, Benjamin Bratt, and Betty Gilpin. It's set after the movie, and looks like a fun creation acting as a standalone survival story.

Netflix is about to give the Legendary MonsterVerse the anime treatment with "Skull Island," and frankly, this show looks cool as hell. The first teaser for the series was unveiled today along with news of the show's voice cast, a star-studded ensemble that (per The Hollywood Reporter) includes Mae Whitman ("Avatar: The Last Airbender"), Betty Gilpin ("Glow"), Benjamin Bratt ("Poker Face"), Darren Barnet ("Never Have I Ever"), and Nicolas Cantu ("The Walking Dead: World Beyond").
/Film's monster-loving team has been wondering for a while now if "Skull Island" will be a period piece a la 2017's "Kong: Skull Island," or take place in the present-day like "Godzilla vs. Kong." Honestly, the 57-second teaser doesn't explicitly answer that question (although the clothes and old-school military chopper do make the case for it being set in the past), but it does provide an excellent preview of the classic monster mash of carnage...
