New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features one random pick as well as four selections reflecting the month of May 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a self-loathing serial killer, a violinist’s murderous ghost, and a postmodern vamp flick.

The TV-movie Scream, Pretty Peggy first aired as part of ABC Movie of the Week. Bette Davis plays the mother of a reclusive sculptor (Ted Bessell), and after the previous housekeeper goes missing, a local college student (Sian Barbara Allen) fills the position. For Zoe Saldaña, the 2023 Oscars presented an opportunity to join the sustainability discussion and incorporate practices into her life — starting with the pinnacle red carpet.
As an ambassador for Suzy Amis Cameron’s Rcgd Global, the Academy’s official sustainability partner, and an awards presenter, the Avatar: The Way of Water star accessorized a Fall 2022 Fendi Couture mesh and lace-paneled slip-gown with vintage Cartier jewels.
“I love that idea of loving beautiful pieces with a history. There is a beauty in the doable, simple things for me,” Saldaña tells The Hollywood Reporter, referring to dazzling 18K white gold and diamond pendant ear clips and a cultured pearl and diamond statement ring. (Her Pluie de Cartier Arabesque collar necklace is vintage-inspired.)
Saldaña carried a Tyler Ellis Lee Pouchet envelope clutch.
Saldaña also carried a Tyler Ellis Lee Pouchet envelope clutch, which was handcrafted by indigenous, and mostly female, artisans at a family-owned factory in Italy.

Actor Linda Hamilton and Terminator director James Cameron were once involved in a close marital relationship. But Hamilton at one point felt Cameron’s work ethic played a role in pulling the two of them further apart.

Hamilton and Cameron had a bit of a complicated relationship even before officially becoming a couple. When they collaborated on Terminator, Hamilton asserted that they were often at odds on set. Partially because Hamilton considered herself one of the only actors who wasn’t afraid to butt heads with Cameron.
“I’d known him from the first Terminator film and we did not particularly like each other or get along,” Hamilton once told Daily Mail. “I am probably the only actress in history to have stood up to him.”

When James Cameron set out to make his historical romantic disaster epic, "Titanic," he was taking a massive financial and creative risk. Not only was the film the most expensive ever made at that time, but Cameron's name was more affiliated with genre blockbusters like "The Terminator" or "Aliens," not the kind of movies that would make legions of moms cry in the theater. As has been proven time and time again, one should never bet against James Cameron, who from "Titanic" onward has exclusively directed the highest-grossing films in history.
The success of a film like "Titanic" is the result of thousands of decisions, like casting, costuming, special effects, editing, and most importantly, screenwriting. "Titanic" is considered by many to be one of the best films of all time, and is currently tied for winning the most ever Academy Awards. But before "Titanic" shipped into theaters and changed the cinematic landscape forever,...

The Critic’s Choice Awards at Century City’s Fairmont Hotel were a noisy affair as everyone with a stake in the outcomes roared for their favorites. The A24 gang at the front to the side of the stage erupted loudly when Ke Huy Quan won yet again (as “Elvis” star Austin Butler and many others stood and applauded) for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and then again and again as it went on to win a total five awards including Best Director, Original Screenplay, and Picture for directing duo Daniels.
It was the A24 table all over again when Brendan Fraser wept to another standing ovation as he accepted his award for his moving performance in “The Whale.” At night’s end, as the room cheered them on, Daniels thanked A24, “the most supportive studio of all time.” These winners have strong momentum going into the SAG Awards, BAFTAs,...

Avatar: The Way of Water is still smashing it at the box office nearing 2B worldwide and director James Cameron is already teasing the next installment in the film series.
While attending the Critics Choice Awards, Cameron stopped to talk to Deadline where he dropped some nuggets about what fans could expect from Avatar 3 revealing the element of fire and two new cultures would be introduced.
“Fire has a symbolic purpose in the film and there’s a culture that is specifically around that concept. That’s probably saying too much as we speak,” he told Deadline.
Cameron continued spilling the tea adding, “You’re going to meet two completely new cultures in the next film. We met the Omaticaya, we met the Metkayina, and you’re going to meet two new cultures in the next film, and it kind of rove a little more freely around the world of Pandora to different places.

The holidays started early in Tinseltown (and elsewhere), beginning with James Cameron missing his own “Avatar: The Way of Water” Hollywood premiere, knocked down with a bout of Covid and moving on to New York’s first look at “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Santa turned up at Christina Moore and John Ducey’s “I Believe in Santa” Netflix premiere and there was even a Christmas Con! Meanwhile, Damien Chazelle brought a much less family-friendly flick, “Babylon,” to the City of Angels in another splashy premiere.

On Saturday, as the acclaimed director was leaving a Los Angeles screening of his new film “Avatar: The Way of Water”, a small crowd of fans booed him for refusing to stop to autograph their personal items.
One person even yelled, “F**k ‘Avatar,’” as Cameron was escorted into a black vehicle.
Before the car took off, the Oscar-winning filmmaker rolled down his tinted window just enough for him to reveal his hand before flipping them his middle finger.

It’s been a happy party daze from coast to coast and beyond as big stars get dressed to the nines and hit the scene, celebrating everything about the arts as we roll into the holiday season. Plus, early awards shows portend the coming nominations from the Academy, the Critics Choice Association and the top guilds including SAG, DGA and PGA; and “Avatar: The Way of Water” made a huge late-entry splash into the contender’s bracket.

A few years ago, after James Cameron finished the first Avatar film, his kids called a family meeting to deliver some notes on his parenting. Some of the kids, who today range in age from 15 to 32, had attended the Muse school in Calabasas that Cameron’s wife, Suzy Amis Cameron, founded in 2006. At Muse, students are encouraged to provide feedback to their teachers, and now the Cameron brood was emboldened to apply that same technique at home.
Cameron is known in the film business for getting what he wants when he wants it, from release dates to budgets to the right to mount elaborate oceanic expeditions on a studio’s dime. The director admits he has sometimes brought his hard-driving style home, and there are moments when his fathering has resembled the Robert Duvall character in The Great Santini, the relentless Marine colonel patriarch.

Right now, green beauty and sustainable fashion are two of the biggest, buzziest categories, particularly for celebrities. 'Jurassic World' velociraptor kicks Iron Man ass at worldwide box office. 'Jurassic World' officially surpasses 'The Avengers' at worldwide box office Directed by Colin Trevorrow; starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Vincent D'Onofrio; and co-executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, Jurassic World has officially become the third biggest worldwide box office hit in history. The Jurassic Park sequel – or reboot, as it's basically the same story with a slightly different twist – has surpassed Marvel's Joss Whedon-directed all-star superhero flick The Avengers, which broke box office records back in 2012. Of course, "officially" just ain't what it used to be – like, in the days before The Fall. So you wisely ask, "But which movie has actually sold the most tickets?" After all, that's the true measure of a film's popularity. Well, that's a tough one to answer without the studios providing accurate, precise numbers. And that's not about to happen. It always...

Off the Map: Cameron’s Well-Meaning Doc Explores Plight of Displacement
Focusing on the thousands of displaced families and children that languish in poverty around the Thai-Burma border, Stuart Cameron’s simplistic, well-meaning documentary All You Need is Love attempts to shine on a light on one of many global problematic human rights issues. Bypassing the extremities of the miserable circumstances in which these people live, Cameron instead focuses on the more hopeful aspects at work in such dire circumstances, mainly tiny but existent rays of hope that may exist due to the committed work of several individuals.
Specifically examining the Good Morning School in Mae Sot, Thailand, Cameron highlights the important contributions of Paw Ray, a Burmese teacher and refugee who began a network of schools in the region back in 1986. While promoting the trailer for "X-Men: Days of Future Past," director Bryan Singer decided to answer some fan questions. Most of those questions focused on the new "X-Men" movie, but one was more unique. Singer was asked to name actors he would cast if he was making "The Usual Suspects" today. He didn't have much time to think about it, but the director still provided a list. Check out his reply below. * Chris Hemsworth as Dean Keaton (originally Gabriel Byrne) * Dane DeHaan as Michael McManus (originally Stephen Baldwin) * Jonah Hill as Todd Hockney (originally Kevin Pollak) * Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Fenster (originally Benicio del Toro) * Edward James Olmos as Dave Kujan (originally Chazz Palmintari) * Jennifer Lawrence as Edie (originally Suzy Amis) * Michael Fassbender as Kobayashi (originally Pete Postlethwaite) * Benedict Cumberbatch as Verbal Kint (originally Kevin Spacey)...

From Mother Nature Network's Michael d'Estries:
James Cameron is still a vegan — and he picked a massive celebration to remind the world.
The 58-year-old filmmaker and ocean explorer was honored on June 13 during the National Geographic Society's 125th anniversary gala with “Explorer of the Year” for his successful solo dive last year to the deepest point of the Pacific Ocean. During his speech, Cameron urged the packed house of scientists and explorers to consider dropping animal products and reap the benefits.
“I’ve had an epiphany recently,” Cameron said. “I want to challenge all of you as people of deep conscience, people who are environment stewards of the earth and oceans … By changing what you eat, you will change the entire contract between the human species and the natural world."
Cameron, who announced he'd gone vegan in October of last year, told the crowd that the switch had a huge impact on him.

It's 8.30 on a grey morning in Belfast and James Cameron, never a fan of the small gesture, strides into the recently opened Titanic Belfast museum to the swelling strains of that Celine Dion song. Despite having landed about 12 hours ago, Cameron, a good-looking 58-year-old with a powder-puff moustache and beard, is full of beans, eager to wring yet more drops out of the waterlogged wreck of Rms Titanic.
The ostensible reason Cameron has flown to the other side of the world from his homes in California and New Zealand is to promote the 3D Blu-Ray disc of his world-swallowing multi-Oscar-winning 1997 film. But the real reason is that this is simply the kind of thing that he does. Cameron will happily travel anywhere to expound...

Filmmaker James Cameron recently purchased a 2,500 acre farm in New Zealand. The property was originally used as a dairy farm and since the New Zealand government requires that the land is continued to be used as a farm, Cameron had planned to continue producing dairy products. However, it seems he has since changed his mind.
Cameron and his wife, Suzy Amis, have recently adopted a vegan diet and hope to reflect their lifestyle in their new farm.
"So we're looking for something more crop based. I don't want to be a hypocrite," Cameron told the NY Times.

Kate Winslet, Billy Zane, Titanic Box Office: Guy Pearce / Maggie Grace's Lockout Bombs, Julia Roberts / Lily Collins / Armie Hammer's Mirror Mirror Resilient The Titanic 3D rerelease hasn't broken any box-office records in North America, where it has taken in an estimated $44.41 million after 12 days. Overseas, however, it's another story. This weekend (which includes Wed./Thu. in some territories), Titanic 3D topped the international box office, collecting an estimated $98.9 million at 9,889 theaters in 69 territories (representing more than 100 countries), according to Box Office Mojo. In China alone, James Cameron disaster / romantic epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and veteran Gloria Stuart drew $67 million, an official record for that country (not adjusted for inflation / currency fluctuations). For comparison's sake: several years before China became a box-office powerhouse for Hollywood movies — one likely to surpass the United States in the not-too-distant future — Titanic earned $43.92 million during its initial run in that country.

Good evening America. It has recently come to my attention that I enjoy the nein•a•dees. I came upon this realization on Saturday whilst watching Titanic (1997) starring Billy Zane, The Unsinkable Annie Wilkes... and Suzy Amis. After removing my misty used 3D glasses sponsored by The Lion King, I gazed wistfully at photos of blk dnm's "leather jacket 8" modelled by Juliette Lewis and Chloe Sevigny. In two dimensions.
Later indulging in buttery spaetzle, courtesy of Hallo Berlin and nein-a-dees university mates, we considered trapeze lessons and discussed the puzzling career of Mira Sorvino before spotting Primal Fear's Edward Norton in the 10th row at "The Lady From Dubuque" starring four time Oscar nominee Jane Alexander. She twirled her angelic shawl with all the grace befitting an Albee abstraction. Or Stevie Nicks at a Fleetwood Mac reunion tour.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games Passes $300m? Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on the North American box office chart, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $21.5 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. That's quite a bit lower than the $25 million some had been expecting as late as Friday evening, or the near-$30 million predicted by Box Office Mojo a few days ago. If those estimates are correct, Universal will surely claim that American Reunion easily surpassed the $18.7 million earned by the original American Pie at 2,508 sites in 1999. In 2012 dollars, however, American Pie would have earned approximately $29 million. And what that means is: many more tickets were sold for American Pie than for American Reunion. Also, remember that American Reunion cost a...

Kate Winslet as Rose, Titanic 3D The Hunger Games will easily top the North American box for the third weekend in a row. Gary Ross' dystopic adventure tale collected $12.9 million on Friday, April 6, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The film will likely earn somewhere between $35-$40 million over the Easter weekend. If so, it will be down around 30-35% compared to a week ago — or about half its 62% drop-off rate last (non-holiday) weekend. The Hunger Games should cross the $300 million mark at the domestic box office on Sunday. Its current total is $282.23 million. Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion landed at no. 2 on Friday. At 3,192 locations, the R-rated comedy took in $9.2 million — including $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings. Its weekend total could reach $25 million. Leonardo DiCaprio, Titanic The Hunger Games will easily top the North American box office once again this weekend — its third time as no. 1 — according to Deadline.com's "sources." As per Deadline's early, rough estimates, The Hunger Games is expected to collect $12-$14 million on Friday, and could reach $40 million over the Easter weekend. If so, Gary Ross' movie would be down close to 30% compared to last weekend — or less than half its drop-off rate last (non-holiday) weekend. It seems that Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg's American Reunion will be the no. 2 movie on Friday, with somewhere between $8-$10 million at 3,192 locations, and an estimated $25 million by Sunday evening. That includes $660,000 earned at Thursday midnight screenings in North America. James Cameron's Titanic movie Titanic 3D was the no. 2 movie on the domestic box-office chart on Wednesday, April 4, according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Directed by the Marianas Trench's James Cameron, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D collected $4.37 million at 2,674 theaters, landing right behind The Hunger Games' $4.6 million at 4,137 locations. Comparisons are hard to make. The Hunger Games is in 2D, which means cheaper movie ticket prices, but it's playing at 1,500 more theaters than Titanic 3D. The Hunger Games has also been around for 13 days; Titanic 3D opened on Tuesday, earning approximately $325,000 at various preview screenings. Directed by Gary Ross, The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson. At no. 3, Jonathan Liebesman / Sam Worthington / Ralph Fiennes' Wrath of the Titans grossed $2.25 million, followed by Julia Roberts / Armie Hammer / Lily Collins' Mirror Mirror with $1.66 million and Channing Tatum...

Kate Winslet, Titanic 3D Titanic 3D may have sailed to the top of the North American box-office chart on Wednesday, grossing an estimated $4.7 million at about 2,600 locations according to The Hollywood Reporter. That figure includes $300,000 earned at Tuesday night previews, and 71 IMAX screens. Directed by James Cameron, who made perfectly-timed headlines about a week ago thanks to a quick deep-sea trek, the 1997 megablockbuster stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Titanic's chief competition for the no. 1 slot is 2012's own megablockbuster, Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games. The Gary Ross dystopic adventure drama earned an estimated $4.6-$4.7 million on Wednesday — without the added Tuesday night bonus or box-office-boosting 3D surcharges. Paramount is (officially) estimating Titanic 3D will rake in $20 to $25 million by Friday. 20th Century Fox is handling the film's international release. Launched in December 1997, the original Titanic grossed $1.8 billion worldwide. For those who choose to ignore the Inflation Effect,...

Hollywood's biggest epic sets sail once again this week as James Cameron's dimensionally expanded "Titanic 3D" hits theaters to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the eponymous ship's voyage (we can assure you that making more money has nothing to do with it).
Audiences old enough to have seen the movie that made Leonardo DiCaprio a superstar during its theatrical run will get to relive the phenomenon -- this time in 3-D -- while a new generation will have the opportunity to experience "Titanic" on the big screen for the first time.
But first, grab some Kleenex, break out the best of Celine Dion and learn a little inside info about its legacy.
12: Number of dives it took for James Cameron and his crew to capture footage of the real Titanic wreckage, using a state-of-the-art camera system his brother Mike developed with Panavision exclusively for the production.

Two days ago, James Cameron made world headlines for reportedly finding himself about 11 1/4 kilometers below sea level in the Marianas Trench, which is supposed to be the deepest spot on Earth. Whether as a testament to human-made technology or human-made p.r., Cameron was actually able to tweet to his followers: "Just arrived at the ocean's deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you." Fast forward a couple of days and Cameron is above ground in London with Kate Winslet (photo) — but not Leonardo DiCaprio — at the premiere of Titanic 3D, the (are you ready?) 3D version of Cameron's 1997 multiple-Oscar-winning megablockbuster about a luxury liner that sank to the bottom of the ocean nearly a century ago. So, does that mean the timing of Cameron's deep-sea diving to-do and the ensuing Mariana Trench tweet were merely a couple of Titanic-related p.

We’ve not put up too many featurettes from Titanic as let’s face it, most of them we’ve seen before but this little video is rather nice. It has many of the cast talking about how they felt when they saw the movie for the first time. Interviews include Kathy Bates, Billy Zane, Frances Fisher, Bill Paxton, Bernard Hill, Ioan Gruffudd and James Cameron’s wife Suzy Amis-Cameron. No sign of Leo or Kate though I’m afraid peeps.

Titanic 3D poster: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, sinking ship Titanic 3D opens April 6, 2012. But the romantic/disaster movie's poster (via moviefone.com) is already here, just in time for Valentine's Day. Directed by James Cameron, and starring youthful couple Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, following its late 1997 release Titanic went on to become the biggest box-office hit the universe had ever known — if you choose to ignore inflation, of course. Paramount, 20th Century Fox, and Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment have reportedly spent 60 weeks and $18 million on the Titanic's full restoration and 2D-to-3D conversion, which is more than double what the actual ship cost back in 1912. (Well, okay — if, once again, you choose to ignore that pesky thing called inflation.) Despite all that dough, the director-producer says the new Titanic is in "2.99D"; in other words, superior to the "2.4D" of most conversions though not exactly the 3D of, say,...

You can’t deny that James Cameron knows how to sell a good movie! We’ve seen him do it countless times with the likes of Aliens, Terminator, Titanic and Avatar. Sure, we are a long way from seeing any footage of any kind for the sequels to Avatar, but recently Fox News caught up with the director at the Covenant House Gala in Los Angeles where the filmmaker and his wife Suzy Amis were being honored for their philanthropic work in helping homeless youth and he gave some news on the progress of the sequels.
When asked about how the film will be shot,
“We’re shooting two films back-to-back, so I’m writing two scripts, not one, which will complete a [three]-film story arc – not really a trilogy, but just an overall character arc so I’m pretty excited about that,” he said. “We’re doing a lot of preliminary work right now on new software and new animation techniques and so on. We’re creating a new facility in Manhattan Beach so everybody that’s not already dead is coming back.
