Alfred Molina has gone viral for sharing an emotional story to Vanity Fair about his father, who never vocally supported his son’s acting career. Molina once had the chance to become the manager of a restaurant for a higher salary. He turned it down to pursue the arts, which baffled his father. This was long before Molina became a Tony and BAFTA-nominated actor, plus an iconic movie villain thanks to Doctor Octopus in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2.”
“When I was very young, my dad got me a job as a waiter in the restaurant where he was working. If I say so myself, I was a good waiter to the point where the management offered me the chance to do a two-week management training course,” Molina said. “I turned it down because I got an acting job. My father says, ‘This acting job, how much are they paying you?...

Plot: While stranded at a rural Arizona rest stop, a traveling salesman is thrust into a dire hostage situation by the arrival of two bank robbers with no qualms about using cruelty-or cold, hard steel-to protect their bloodstained fortune.
Review: Having the same style as a famous filmmaker can be both an advantage and disadvantage. In many ways, The Last Stop In Yuma County reminded me of Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. It’s coming together of many stories and a rewatch giving so much context to every little event meant a certain level of skill. Sure, it may look like No Country For Old Men (and even feature a bit part with Gene Jones) but it’s very much its own film. And now that director Francis Galluppi has been chosen to make an Evil Dead movie by Sam Raimi himself, all eyes will be on Yuma County. But...

Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy still remains one of the most iconic comic book movie trilogies of all time, since it introduced a plethora of villains long before MCU was a thing. One of those villains was Molina’s Doc Ock.
Molina portrayed the character’s arc flawlessly, transitioning from a brilliant scientist to a mind-controlled villain and ultimately becoming a genuine hero. Molina excelled in both emotional and action-packed scenes, adding depth to the character of Doc Ock and making him one of Spider-Man’s most compelling movie villains.
Now in his recent interview with Vanity Fair, Molina revealed that he was surprised he was asked to reprise his role. He was a bit worried however due to his advanced age, but Pascal and Watts reassured him they had the technology to “fix it.”
“Coming back 17 years later to play the character again, no one was more surprised than me.

Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy remains one of the most iconic comic book movie trilogies, introducing numerous villains before the MCU era. Among them was Molina’s portrayal of Doc Ock.
Molina’s seamless portrayal captured the character’s evolution from a brilliant scientist to a mind-controlled villain and eventual hero. Excelling in both emotional and action-packed scenes, Molina added depth to Doc Ock, solidifying him as one of Spider-Man’s most captivating movie villains.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Molina disclosed his surprise at being approached to reprise his role. Despite some concerns about his age, Pascal and Watts reassured him they had the technology to “fix it.”

Threequels can often be a daunting undertaking for even the most accomplished of directors, and even for franchises with decent first two installments. Candyman 3: Day of the Dead takes a fairly offensive stab at the Mexican holiday, while Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III doesn’t live up to the pre-release marketing hype about it being ‘banned’ and ‘the most controversial movie ever made’. It was neither. Even Scream 3, despite not necessarily being bad per se, is a low point considering how strong the first two movies are. On the flip side though, George Romero’s Day of the Dead is a solid follow-up to both Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, while Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead threequel Army of Darkness is a total blast. So, after Hostel: Part II grossed significantly less than the hit opening chapter, did that put any notions...

The original Spider-Man films could’ve changed the career of one Yellowstone star but he chose to turn down the offer. Tobey Maguire’s Spidey role was reportedly first offered to Wes Bentley, who now plays the despicable Jamie Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama. Bentley revealed that he rejected the offer since the comic book movies were not performing well at the time, especially with the two subpar Batman movies from Joel Schumacher.
Wes Bentley opened up about his Yellowstone role and the role that he missed out on
Before he turned down the Spider-Man role, Bentley became a promising young star with his role as Ricky Fitts in American Beauty. Bentley went on to star in other movies like The Hunger Games, Interstellar, and Mission: Impossible 6.

There are any number of actors who could have taken on the role of Dr. Otto Octavius in 2004's Spider-Man 2, but Sam Raimi made a somewhat unlikely choice with Alfred Molina. However, it would prove to absolutely be the right one.
The actor made Doctor Octopus his own and, even two decades later, his Doc Ock is still considered one of the best comic book supervillains to ever grace the screen.
In a recent interview, Molina reflected on his career and admitted he was surprised to be considered seeing as he was best known at the time for his roles in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Frida.
"It was a big surprise to me, because it's not the kind of movie that I imagined myself to be qualified for. You always think of these big action films as [casting] physical types, and I've definitely never been that.

Alfred Molina’s career seems to be built on his weird onscreen relationship with spiders. The actor is best known for playing the role of Dr. Otto Octavius / Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2 and also reprised it in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Molina’s debut film was the first entry in the Indiana Jones franchise.
Alfred Molina made his film debut with Raiders of the Lost Ark
In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Molina has a small role where he is forced to tend to a swarm of tarantulas while helping Indiana Jones. However, given the story behind the filming of the scene, which used real spiders, Molina’s dedication to his craft despite the small screen time he received in the film is commendable. Here is why Alfred Molina’s Raiders of the Lost Ark role deserves applause even after 43 years.

Spider-Man 3 became the latest movie featuring the web-slinger to return to theaters yesterday evening. Sony Pictures' "Spider-Mondays" are part of the studio's 100th-anniversary celebrations, giving fans the chance to experience Spidey's adventures on the big screen either again or for the first time.
While Spider-Man 3 is typically considered the worst of Sam Raimi's trilogy, it swung to an impressive $760,000 at the U.S. box office yesterday in just 466 venues.
To compare, Spider-Man opened to $680,000 in 466 U.S. theaters two weeks ago and the classic Spider-Man 2 made $805,000 in 467 of them. The sequel taking the top spot isn't a surprise, but Spider-Man 3 clearly has more fans than we realised.
The movie had the biggest per theater average with $1,600, beating even new releases.
Spider-Man 3 was originally released in 2007 and starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, alongside Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, James Franco as Harry Osborn/New Goblin,...

The MCU has a lineup of upcoming movies, despite Marvel Studios facing challenges with recent projects. There’s been discussion about reducing the number of releases, as fans are growing weary of lower-quality shows and movies. However, Spider-Man continues to be a major draw, consistently delivering profits for Marvel, regardless of the medium.
In the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has had three standalone movies, with a fourth one in the works. This was confirmed months ago by producer Amy Pascal. The sequel’s development was paused during the WGA Strike but has since resumed. In this guide, we’ll summarize everything we know about the upcoming Spider-Man movie.
The plot could either explore the Multiverse or take a street-level direction
‘Spider-Man 3’ introduced the Multiversal theme that the rest of the franchise is now exploring, and although the movie was well-received, there’s been speculation that Feige has different plans for the upcoming installment.

MCU has quite a slate of movies coming up, even though Marvel Studios has hit a rough patch with the last couple of projects. There have been talks about releasing fewer projects, as fans are definitely becoming tired of shows and movies of lower quality; still, if one character always managed to drag people to movies, it’s Spider-Man, by far the most profitable Marvel franchise, no matter the product you’re looking at.
So far, talking about the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has three standalone movies and a fourth on the way. This was confirmed several months ago by producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed that the work on the sequel has been ongoing but stopped due to the solidarity with the ongoing WGA Strike at the time. Spider-Man 3 swung into theaters again yesterday, but it was way back in 2007 that we first saw Peter Parker encounter the alien costume.
The web-slinger soon embraced his darker side, though it was a relatively rushed subplot and one we've since learned was shoehorned into the threequel by producer Avi Arad (who expected to sell a lot of Venom toys).
In the movie, Tobey Maguire's web-slinger was decked out in a black version of his regular red and blue suit. Venom was a little more comic-accurate, though quite a bit smaller than the version on the page. In fact, the design continues to divide the opinions of fans.
However, something tells us what you'll see in the X post below would have really left fans fuming.

When Marvel Studios was searching for its Doctor Strange in the mid-2010s, a lot of very interesting names were in the mix. Chief among them was Joaquin Phoenix, an actor it was hard to imagine ever joining the MCU.
Ultimately, it didn't happen, and Benedict Cumberbatch landed the role. It's hard to imagine anyone else playing the Sorcerer Supreme now, of course, and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson revealed just how close the Joker star came to being cast in an interview with Slash Film.

When we think of the iconic portrayal of Dr. Otto Octavius / Doctor Octopus in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 2 (2004), one name instantly springs to mind: Alfred Molina. The latter’s performance as the villainous Doc Ock is widely considered to be among the finest performances of the entire Spider-Man film franchise.
But what if we told you that the London-born actor, 70, might not have even been a part of the film without the crucial role of Raimi’s wife, Gillian Greene? Can you think of anyone else who could portray the multifaceted villain with such finesse?

The trick with horror is how you use the tropes. Slashers, ghost stories, monster movies, there’s a formula to them all but what separates the good from the bad is how they use that formula in an innovative way. James Button and Kristaps Kazaks’ short turned web series turned short again The Corpse Series is a great example of this. At its heart, it’s a comedy about two bumbling idiots trying to dig themselves out of a bad situation. It’s just that the bad situation is an ever increasing stack of dead bodies. If there’s one hero comic book writers love to torment the most, it has to be the friendly neighborhood superhero Spider-Man. There’s barely anyone else who is down on their luck more often than the web-crawler, and still, he manages to smile and keeps going on.
However, there are times when even the most hopeful of Marvel heroes can get crushed to the point where he loses his mind, and that is one of the possibilities that can be adapted by Sam Raimi, if he ever returns for Spider-Man 4.

With Lionsgate/Roadside distributing the film and Nthibah Pictures financing it, Moritz Mohr’s movie about a deaf and mute fighter named Boy, who vowed his family’s revenge, suffered a major blow during the opening weekend.
Bill Skarsgård as Boy in Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World
Kicking off with a rather slow opening, below its original $2M projections, Boy Kills World failed to impress audiences and critics. Hammerstone Studios producer Alex Lebovici grieved that despite a massive production budget and significant marketing, the movie failed to sustain. Meanwhile, fans on X appear to blame Studios for its failure.

It was a very interesting weekend at the box office here in the United States. While the Sam Raimi-produced action-thriller Boy Kills World failed to make a splash and Radio Silence’s hugely entertaining vampire movie Abigail continues to make far less money than it deserves, two genre movies from the distant past managed to make their own mark on the charts.
Both Ridley Scott’s 1979 horror classic Alien and the Brendan Fraser-starring action-horror movie The Mummy (1999) were re-released into theaters, the former film celebrating its 45th anniversary and the latter movie returning to theaters for its 25th anniversary.
Which film came out on top, you might be wondering? The original Alien won this particular battle, coming in at #11 on the weekend charts. The Mummy currently sits in the #14 spot.

Willem Dafoe is a fan favorite after having portrayed several iconic villains in his decades-long career in the film industry. Yet it is his portrayal of Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man that has been widely hailed as one of the best roles he has ever done.
Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn in a still from Spider-Man: No Way Home
From his chilling blue eyes to his menacing smile that can go from warm to blood-curling in the flash of a second, Dafoe is one of those actors who was bound to play a villain. And his portrayal of Green Goblin is no short of a cinematic wonder, for such great was his acting, that even Tom Holland got horrified while filming Spider-Man: No Way Home.

After the success of Evil Dead Rise, there are no fewer than two more sequels in the works. More on those plans here:
It’s not easy taking a beloved horror franchise and making a new instalment that can fit into its timeline, honour the original and still be its own film. Many have tried, many have failed.
Lee Cronin hit the perfect balance with 2023’s Evil Dead Rise, which was a satisfyingly crunchy, gory sequel. We reported earlier this year that, thanks to the success of Cronin’s film, we would be getting a new spin-off set in the world of Evil Dead. Sébastien Vaniček, who directed the spider-horror Infested, will be directing this one.
Now, Deadline reports that there’s also another instalment in the works. Francis Galluppi is on directing duties for the still-unnamed film and will also pen the script, which will hopefully include a Deadite or two.

Spider-Man 4 rumors are running wild, but the potential involvement of Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan has to be the craziest of them all. The film has already been through a number of plausible directors, but none seem to fit the requirements of either Sony or Marvel. One industry insider took the time to call out the false information about Spider-Man 4 directors, and he debunked the theories about four famous filmmakers.
Some wild speculations are circulating online about the director of the next Spider-Man project after No Way Home
Finding a replacement for Jon Watts, who directed the first three movies, hasn’t been easy. Both Marvel and Sony look to create a phenomenal film that could outperform the box office of Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, their visions for the fourth film are very different.

So, there was a deleted scene in Spider-Man 3, in which Sam Raimi seems to have paid homage to his horror roots by giving the audience a jump scare when a dramatic image of Venom appears in Peter Parker’s mirror. The scene in question took place just after Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man discovered his black costume.
Fans ascertained a brief deleted clip in which Peter sees a flash of Venom screaming in the mirror. Raimi clearly does not fully get the appeal of the antagonist Venom, as fans of the character are still upset about how the character was handled in Spider-Man 3. The director appears more at ease, employing Venom as a metaphor for Peter’s darker side, as the latter grows fixated on the strength and self-assurance the Symbiote costume bestows upon him.

As far as superhero films are concerned, the aura of the character is not just in the powers they possess but also in their appearance. The costume, therefore, is a key component that adds to the appeal of these icons from the comic book world. From Marvel’s Spider-Man to DC’s Superman, costume designers in Hollywood have pushed the envelope to bring out the nuances of these characters.

Designer James Acheson has proved that he is the authority in this regard, having designed Tobey Maguire’s 2002 suit for Spider-Man and Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel costume. While Zack Snyder’s chequered relationship with audiences restricted some fans from appreciating the modern Superman suit, the realization that both these outfits were designed by the same person, is making them look at these costumes in a new light.

This article will contain some spoilers for Challengers, so reader beware if you haven’t seen Luca Guadagnino’s new film…
Tennis isn’t for everyone – some people just want their Spidey fix. That’s what happens in one scene of Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, where the daughter of Tashi (Zendaya) and Art (Mike Faist) asks to watch a Spider-Verse movie instead of tennis. But as the director explains, it wasn’t meant to be directly linked to Zendaya’s own Spider-Man movies.
As Guadagnino told Entertainment Weekly, those thinking that Spider-Verse moment in Challengers was an intentional easter egg are mistaken, as it was really just out of circumstances. “When you get rights for something to be used in a movie, it’s very complicated. Amy Pascal, our amazing producer, was of help there. I said, ‘Amy, can we use one of your catalog titles so it’s going...

Andy Warhol once famously wrote, "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." We may need to edit that to, "Everyone will get the chance to at least pitch an Evil Dead movie to Sam Raimi for a shot at making it." Because, a couple of months after word that Vermin director Sébastien Vaniček is developing his own take on the venerable horror franchise, news arrives via Deadline that Francis Galluppi will be figuring out another.
Galluppi, who directed The Last Stop In Yuma County, has reportedly brought an original idea set in the Dead-verse to Sam Raimi, who oversees any movie based on his original trilogy.
"Francis Galluppi is a storyteller who knows when to keep us waiting in simmering tension and when to hit us with explosive violence," Raimi told Deadline. "He is a director that shows uncommon control in his feature debut." This will, as you could surmise,...

Moritz Mohr’s debut feature Boy Kills World is probably the best of the action offerings people have witnessed in recent years. Released on April 26, the action movie starring Jessica Rothe and Bill Skarsgård follows the story of a deaf and mute orphan who seeks revenge for his family’s murder.
Jessica Rothe as June 27 in Boy Kills World (2024)
While the film majorly focused on Bill Skarsgård as the lead, Jessica Rothe stole eyes with her phenomenal action sequences as June 27, an enforcer working for the Van Der Koys. Certainly, Rothe’s role demanded her to go through extreme training to convincingly become the ultimate fighter in the film. The actress therefore revealed learning 17 forms of Martial Arts in preparation for her role.

Plot: A deaf and mute warrior (Bill Skarsgård) raised by a mysterious shaman (The Raid’s Yayan Ruhian) attempts to topple a repressive regime.
Review: Last year, Bill Skarsgård played a suave villain in Keanu Reeves’ John Wick: Chapter 4, but notably stayed out of the action scenes. Had the movie been released after Boy Kills World, I think the part would have been radically reimagined, with the actor putting himself through the kind of physical transformation that changes careers. Watching the hulking, 6’3 actor blast his way through opponents in Boy Kills World, it’s hard to believe that the same guy, just a few years ago, was best known as Pennywise the Clown. Indeed, Boy Kills World is the perfect launchpad for Bill Skarsgård to become a major action hero (it bodes well for his next film – the remake of The Crow).

Doctor Strange director, Scott Derrickson, is known for two things: horror and Marvel. His epic vision and style shine through in films like Sinister and The Day the Earth Stood Still. And yet, fans weep over the scandal-ridden production of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness.
An IP that should have remained in the hands of Derrickson, the changing of the old guard to bring in Sam Raimi was a decision praised by many. However, with time, regrets surface, and missed opportunities are realized as fans grasp the true scale of Scott Derrickson’s vision.

There are truly one or two things in this world that are worthy of being called the stuff of legends. Among monuments, it’s the Giza Necropolis; in literature, Homer’s Iliad; and, of course, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey when it comes to film.

South African production house Nthibah Pictures isn’t afraid to take risks. The company, which was established in 2018, is coming off the back of fully-financing upcoming big-budget, high-octane genre title Boy Kills World, which opens in the U.S. today (April 26) across nearly 2,500 screens. The film, which is being released by Lionsgate’s sister label Roadside Attractions, stars Bill Skarsgård and is produced with Sam Raimi and is, says Nthibah Pictures’ chairman Wayne Fitzjohn and CEO Simon Swart, one of the “biggest-budgeted” titles to come out of South Africa.
“Not only is it the biggest budget from a South African production company by some margin, but also we’ve doubled down on the P&a,” says Fitzjohn.
“We raised the P&a [for the release] as well,” says Swart of the Moritz Mohr-directed project, which was shot entirely in South Africa. The film centers on Skarsgård’s Boy, who vows revenge after his...

Sam Raimi has handpicked another heir apparent to the “Evil Dead” franchise. Deadline reports that “The Last Stop In Yuma County” director Francis Galluppi follows in the footsteps of Fede Álvarez and Lee Cronin as the next up-and-comer to take the reins on the long-running horror series. And from the sounds of things, it’s another fresh start for the Deadites: an original story developed by Galluppi with no connection to last year’s “Evil Dead Rise.”

"Evil Dead" fans had to wait a full decade between movies following the release of Fede Álvarez's 2013 entry in the long-running horror franchise. It seems the powers that be have no interest in making anyone wait that long again. To that end, we've learned that Francis Galluppi ("The Last Stop in Yuma County") has been tapped to write and direct a new movie set within the universe of Sam Raimi's original 1981 horror classic.
According to Deadline, Galluppi developed the idea and brought it to Raimi's team. They sparked to it and now it's officially in the works. No plot details have been revealed but it is described as an original story set within the "Evil Dead" universe. There's also no word yet on casting or anything like that -- meaning, it's unclear if any familiar characters will be included in this new installment. Rami had this to say...

In an odd quirk of distribution timing, this month has seen the arrival of no less than two imported, semi-comedic thrillers featuring decrepit apartment building invaded by giant spiders. Already playing U.S. theaters is the Australian “Sting,” which is fun, if formulaic. In a whole other class, however, is French “Infested,” a first feature by director Sebastien Vanicek following several impressive shorts. An instant minor genre classic, it is fun and then some — a conceptually unremarkable but resourceful, energetic, stylish and good-humored creature feature with above-average human character interest.
That achievement has been duly noted: Intended as a streaming premiere, “Vermines” (the original title) pleased its producer such that he apparently insisted on a home-turf theatrical release, despite the long delay that imposes on its launch in other formats under French law. It’s seen big-screen release in numerous nations since late last year, though in the U.S.

Whew, it’s not even May, and the cinematic “body count” rises up considerably with another lone, determined warrior facing nearly insurmountable odds. I suppose this is more of the “John Wick” effect, as filmmakers try to “up the ante” and deliver a flick with near wall-to-wall frenetic action. Sam Raimi found great success with the ‘Spider-Man’ film trilogy, each installment grossing over $800 million worldwide. However, plans for further sequels were halted due to script issues. Disappointed with ‘Spider-Man 3,’ Raimi aimed to redeem the franchise with ‘Spider-Man 4,’ which unfortunately never came to fruition. In 2022, he expressed regret about not ending the series on a high note.
Despite this, Raimi’s involvement with Spider-Man continued as he and Marc Webb served as creative consultants for Marvel Studios’ ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ directed by Jon Watts. Recently, rumors have circulated about Raimi directing ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ the highly anticipated installment in the ‘Avengers’ franchise.
Recently, Raimi stated his desire to direct the final Phase 6 movie, but unfortunately, the studio hasn’t approached him yet.
