Stephen King may not be scared of what everyone finds creepy in his book adaptations, but there’s only one movie that the proclaimed author still freaks out about.
Being a big fan of the horror genre himself, King opened up about his top 10 modern horror films back in the day, and one of them is indeed something that causes numerous heated discussions among many viewers.
Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the 1999 supernatural movie The Blair Witch Project kicked it off as an independent low-budget project that later on transformed into a huge hit.
The film initially follows three student filmmakers who are set to hike in the woods in Maryland in an attempt to film a documentary about a local creepy legend, “The Blair Witch”. The movie then adapts a “found footage” format as the characters mysteriously disappear in the woods and only their camera can help discover what really happened.

The poster for the innocuously named “The Coffee Table” notes that it is “A Cruel Caye Casas Film.” The unique designation is certainly fitting, given the storm of controversy it’s stirring up among horror fans. The comically vague logline for the Spanish film — new parents buy a coffee table that will change their lives forever — hides a shocking incident that happens early on. Said incident is not for the faint of heart, and director and co-writer Casas is eager to not only lean into the controversy but take willing audiences on an emotional journey of horror without monsters or the supernatural.
Without spoiling the central incident, Casas explained his film to Variety, including how much he wanted to push audiences, the unique title and how he reacted when Stephen King recommended his work.
(Note: This interview was conducted over email for accuracy between the Spanish and Catalan-speaking Casas and the English-speaking author.

When Sydney Sweeney brandishes a curiously phallic laser gun for her reimagining of Barbarella, she could be doing so under the watchful eye of Edgar Wright. According to Deadline, Wright is in talks to direct Barbarella, with Jane and Honey Goldman negotiating to co-write the script.
As Deadline notes, bringing Jane Goldman aboard shows how serious Sony is about assigning strong talent to Sweeney’s dream project. Jane Goldman’s writing credits include screenplays for Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, Stardust, the upcoming Kingsman: The Blue Blood, and more.
During the backlash for Sony’s abysmal Marvel film Madame Web, Sweeney said she joined the film to position herself to pitch Anyone But You. The rom-com was an admirable success, with $219M+ worldwide. With Sweeney being a bankable star at the studio, Sony is ready to shoot her into space for an action-packed remake of Roger Vadim...

Edgar Wright is doubling down on iconic-film remakes, potentially directing “Barbarella,” starring executive producer Sydney Sweeney.
IndieWire can confirm that Wright is in talks to direct the reimagining of the 1968 cult film that originally starred Jane Fonda as an astronaut looking to defeat an intergalactic evil force. “X-Men: First Class” screenwriters Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are also in negotiations to write the Sony film.
Deadline first reported that Wright is in the running to direct.
And speaking of running, Wright was recently announced to be writing and directing his long-awaited “Running Man” remake with Sweeney’s “Anyone But You” co-star Glen Powell in the lead. The Paramount feature has been in the works with Wright since 2017, and is based on Stephen King’s 1982 novel and later the 1987 feature starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Sydney Sweeney-led “Barbarella” film is taking shape, with Edgar Wright in talks to direct the picture for Sony. Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are in talks to pen the script.
Wright, best known for making the satiric zombie film “Shaun of the Dead,” is next set to direct Glen Powell in an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man.” Wright’s other directorial credits include “Last Night in Soho,” “Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Baby Driver.”
The project also marks another step in Sweeney’s continued relationship with Sony Pictures — she’s most recently starred in “Anyone but You” and “Madame Web” for the studio. While “Madame Web” was largely panned by critics, Sweeney says her involvement in the film was a “strategic business decision” that’s since paid off.

When he’s not writing his new bestsellers, he’s watching and reading other people’s works. Stephen King has been on a quest to bring the best movies and books to his fans’ attention for years, and his most recent recommendation definitely deserves more of it. This overlooked Spanish horror has a silly premise and an extremely tense execution that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat with clenched teeth.

Although there is a wide variety of sub-genres of horror movies to choose from, there is an opinion that they are all too repetitive to be enjoyable. Although there are many cheap carbon copies of the same story released every year, sometimes real gems are released unnoticed.
If you are looking for a movie that could not be further from anything you have ever seen before, and yet is scary enough to send shivers down your spine, then today is your lucky day, because this Stephen King-approved movie will change your view of horror movies forever.

"Carrie" is the book that put Stephen King on the map. When King wrote it, he was struggling financially, eking out a living selling short stories and teaching high school. Then he sat down to write what was first a short story that turned into a novella that turned into a novel. The novel was "Carrie," the story of a bullied teenage girl with telekinesis. The book wasn't a blockbuster when it was published in hardcover, but by the time it hit paperback, it flew off the shelves and King was on his way to becoming one of the best-selling novelists of all time. Sure enough, Hollywood came calling. The book was published in 1974, and by 1976, Brian De Palma's dreamy film adaptation arrived in theaters, starring Sissy Spacek as poor, doomed Carrie White, a girl who is tormented by pretty much everyone, including her Bible-loving mother (played by Piper Laurie) and her classmates.

Approximately 18% of men and 50% of women in the world are arachnophobic. That’s roughly 2.7B people out of our planet’s 8B population who are genuinely terrified of spiders and can’t do anything about it — so unfortunately, a horror movie about giant spiders is missing out on over one third of its potential audience…
But what it’s definitely not missing on is stellar critic reviews and personal praise from the King of Horror himself. Get ready for one terrifying (and very tacky) ride!
How to Escape from an Infested Building?
What we’re about to describe should probably not be read by arachnophobes, so if you’re one and are somehow still reading, proceed at your discretion.
Imagine that your lonely neighbor fascinated by exotic pets brings home a venomous spider. So far so good — as long as the thing is kept on a metaphorical leash, right? But...

Every year, one or two movies arrive with a certain kind of hype that basically involves people puking, fainting, or leaving the theater in horror. More often than not, these movies turn out to be disappointing. Not that all of these are bad, but they definitely fail to live up to that hype. The Spanish horror-comedy The Coffee Table is the latest movie to come with such hype; in fact, even the likes of Stephen King have lauded it by using terms like “Coen brothers’ dark dream.” Letterboxd is flooded with reviews that are saying what a terribly difficult, anxiety-inducing watch this movie is. Well, here’s the thing: The Coffee Table, directed by Caye Casas, is indeed what people say. You’ve got no idea what’s coming for you until you actually watch it. And it is absolutely unimaginable and traumatizing. In fact, I would even say people...

Stephen King is as much of a writer as he is a passionate consumer. The celebrated author is always in search of new movies, books, and TV shows, and whenever he discovers something, he makes sure to give feedback to his fans. King’s X (formerly Twitter) account is one huge reference board where he gives short and concise recommendations for works of fiction that he enjoyed.
King Recommends the Perfect Noir Mystery
If you expect the King of Horror to stick to his favored genre, you are somewhat correct: for the most part, the author reviews horror movies, but he doesn’t limit himself by these imaginary boundaries. Stephen King is hungry for any genres as long as they’re dark enough, and he ensures his followers get the best tips from him.

Some people are easy to scare; others, not so much. And then, there are people like Stephen King — the King of Horror and the man behind some of the most popular, disturbing, and terrifying horror novels in history. King loves his horrors raw and is hard to impress… And yet, this one film proved to be too much even for him.
How to Scare the King of Horror 101
Stephen King often reviews horror movies. The man loves his job, and he loves the sheer terror a good horror instills into its viewers or readers. But at only one instance did the celebrated author admit to dropping a film halfway through. King described it as “the worst nightmare you ever had, the one you woke from gasping and crying with relief because you thought you were buried alive.”
“I asked my son, who was watching with me, to turn the damn thing off.

It has been three decades since The Shawshank Redemption was released, yet the movie remains one of the best movies of all time. A timeless classic, the film starred Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in the lead and is based on a Stephen King novel of similar name.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
While throughout the movie, those who have read King’s book, will understand how perfectly the story was adapted by director Frank Darabont, King’s name is largely missing from the credits. A small ‘Thank You’ does appear at the end, but there is no mention of the novel’s name. This lack of connection was apparently a marketing tactic, that continues to hurt even after all this time.

Stephen King is most often dubbed as the King of Horror, but that never stops the world-famous author from sharing his honest opinion about everything and anything. Others write “hot take” before saying something controversial, but not King: when this man wants to take shots at Quentin Tarantino, he writes a column about it, plain and simple.
And yes, King did take a shot at one of Tarantino’s most celebrated action movies.
Stephen King Hated This Tarantino Classic
Some days, the King of Horror wakes up and chooses violence. There are many fans of the horror genre who only enjoy horror when it is poorly made and when it makes them laugh. Those who are actually looking for the scariest plots and the adrenaline rush you can get from watching them are a minority, but there are some movies that would perfectly fit their expectations.
Although people tend to think that really good horror is rare these days, there are a few gems that have been released recently that don't get nearly enough attention. Barbarian, Zach Cregger's directorial debut, is definitely one of those movies that deserves a lot more buzz than it already got upon its release.
Is Barbarian Worth Watching?
Distributed by 20th Century Studios and scheduled for release in 2022, Barbarian has won the hearts of critics and has an excellent score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, if you're looking for a fresh horror that doesn't completely rely on jump scares,...

The Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont opened up about meeting fantastic people in a callous industry like the film industry during a 2014 interview. He hated that the tabloids painted a bad picture of an actor like Tom Cruise without getting the full picture of how he is in real life. Darabont shared that people should ask his good friend Simon Pegg about the kind of human the Mission: Impossible actor was.

Having become a brand in their own right thanks to their work on Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss quickly (and anticlimactically) wrapped up the iconic TV show and jumped aboard the Netflix ship to create 3 Body Problem, their new big thing. Stephen King may be an unquestionable master of the horror genre, but his storytelling reaches a whole new level when it comes to the proclaimed author’s dramatic narrative.
Behind the immense popularity of King’s eerie novels It, Carrie or The Shining, there are some truly brilliant pieces of his work like Stand by Me, The Green Mile or The Shawshank Redemption that for some reason went more into the scary stories’ shadows.
King’s drama novels nonetheless prove themselves to be a lot deeper regarding some mundane aspects, and Hulu’s unfairly forgotten miniseries appears to be a good example for it.

Apart from a general bunch of movies and shows that Netflix replenishes its endless collection with every month, the streaming also seems to have started a trend of paying homage to flicks that this year celebrate their good round figure.
Back in April, Netflix revealed its big plans for releasing several movies that turn 40 years old in 2024, including a sci-fi horror Firestarter with back then 8-year-old Drew Barrymore in the leading role.
The film comes as one of the numerous adaptations of Stephen King’s lavish literary legacy, but the author himself hasn’t been that enthusiastic about the movie ever since it was released back in 1984.
What Is Firestarter About?
Based on the 1980 novel of the same name, Firestarter follows young girl Charlie who starts developing a very unusual talent of setting places on fire using only her mind. The girl’s ability comes as a repercussion of her...

Fallout is undeniably a post-apocalyptic franchise with a heavy lean towards science fiction. However, the best description for this tough old world is the ‘Weird West:’ a literary goulash of sole survivors, urban legends, horror, science fiction, and the outright supernatural. It’s the latter element that’s most controversial to fans who may prefer the grimdark future trappings of a Brotherhood of Steel working on independently establishing their Warhammer future. Yet, those supernatural qualities are persistent throughout the series in fascinating ways.
The original Interplay Fallout entries kept most of their weirdest oddities non-canonical by making them rare, luck-based encounters. Things like King Arthur by way of Monty Python and a British blue telephone box aren’t actually part of the Fallout world. A crashed alien ship with a blaster and a picture of Elvis was just a cute joke… until Bethesda made the Zetans canon years later. But even in the original Fallout,...

Writer-director S. Craig Zahler (“Bone Tomahawk”) is set to reunite with his “Dragged Across Concrete” and “Brawl in Cell Block 99” star Vince Vaughn and Oscar winner Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”) for upcoming crime thriller “The Bookie & the Bruiser.”
Anton will introduce the film to international distributors at the upcoming Marche du Film in Cannes. UTA Independent Film Group and Range Media Partners arranged the financing and will be representing the North American distribution rights.
Set in 1959 New York, “The Bookie & the Bruiser” follows a pensive, Jewish fellow named Rivner and an oversized Italian-American tough named Boscolo from the Lower East Side, both of whom served overseas during WWII and returned changed men who no longer fit inside the lives they’d left behind. 10. A Good Marriage (2010)
It’s impossible to fully know someone — even if you’ve lived under the same roof for decades. In A Good Marriage, a woman stumbles upon a box in her husband of twenty years’ garage and discovers his dark and inhumane hobby. Inspired by a real story about serial killer Dennis Rader and his wife, it’s one harrowing novella.
9. Rose Red (2002)
Although not a book, Rose Red is a mini-series written by Stephen King over two decades ago that, if revamped, could become a great addition to AHS. Rose Red follows a group of paranormal scientists trying to prove that a house that’s about to be sold to a developer is actively haunted… And they turn out to be correct.
8. The Dark Tower (1982–2016)

The King of Horror’s works have become one of the greatest sources of the filmmakers’ inspiration, as numerous movies and TV titles, based on Stephen King’s novels, brought billions of dollars to the industry. Some of them have even gained worldwide popularity and the golden status and are being discussed and rewatched by fans annually.
These include the 1986 movie with a seemingly straightforward premise. It focuses on four young boys, Gordie, Vern, Chris and Teddy, hoping to become famous in their hometown by finding a dead body of a stranger accidentally killed in the Oregon woods.
Their journey towards the body, however, offers a bunch of unexpected turns, including the unpleasant encounters and the hostility of the wilderness. As they go further in the forest, they also learn more about one another and their very different home lives.

Looking to replicate the present-day Halloween franchise's (albeit mixed) success, Universal and Blumhouse splashed out $400 million on the rights to The Exorcist and let David Gordon Green loose on what was planned as a new trilogy. But then the results for The Exorcist: Believer were more financially and critically horrifying than the film was scary, and Green opted to move on to pastures new. Still intent on making at least one more movie, the studio and production company have now turned to someone who has plenty of experience bringing successful scares to screens: Mike Flanagan.

The Golden Raspberry is one of the most important industry anti-prizes. Every year, the worst movies of the season are nominated for it: from failed blockbusters to dramas that look more like comedies. But often the winners are simply misunderstood masterpieces.
Some of these underrated films were chosen by Reddit users.
1. The Blair Witch Project, 1999
Can you believe it? The movie that changed the horror industry was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Anti-Award in the category Worst Picture. Maybe, from a certain point of view, even this kind of PR benefits the movie, but to be honest, The Blair Witch Project had no chance to "win" that year – it was up against Adam Sandler's Big Daddy, The Haunting, and Will Smith's Wild Wild West.
2. The Bodyguard, 1992

Director Stanley Kubrick is known for his perfectionist tendencies while on set. His commitment to getting the shot technically and artistically right has resulted in some of the best films of all time such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon, Paths of Glory, Full Metal Jacket, and The Shining among others.
Kubrick passed away before the release of his final film Eyes Wide Shut, which starred Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, who were then married. While the psychological thriller drama has been regarded as one of Kubrick’s best and is considered to be one of the greats, the filmmaker himself reportedly did not like the film and especially hated working with Cruise and Kidman.

Recent horror revival, The Exorcist: Believer, proved to be a massive disappointment for fans of William Friedkin's original masterpiece, but it did actually end up performing pretty well at the box office, which means Universal Pictures and Blumhouse intend to forge ahead with the next instalment in the planned trilogy.
Shortly after the movie hit theaters, we learned that director David Gordon Green had decided not to helm The Exorcist: Deceiver, and the studio has now enlisted a filmmaker that's sure to reignite interest.
According to Jeff Sneider (since backed-up by Deadline), none other than Mike Flanagan is in talks to helm the next Exorcist movie. Whether it will keep the "Deceiver" subtitle is unclear, and we're not sure if the cast of Believer will return - although given the previous film's reception, there's a good...

Back in 1999, when the Internet was still relatively new and everyone was used to pixelated footage from portable cameras, the world was rocked by The Blair Witch Project. Obviously fictional, yet eerily realistic, the film haunted many viewers for years and had a huge impact on the genre, popularizing found footage films.
However, 25 years later, with a plethora of films attempting to replicate the success of The Blair Witch Project, and even more films using CGI and highly realistic makeup to create deeper stories, the question arises as to whether the film is still relevant.
Is The Blair Witch Project Real?
Written, directed and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the fictional story of several filmmaking students taking a trip to the woods to get to the bottom of the Blair Witch story, has become an instant success upon its release. While there are many reasons why movies lose their appeal over the years, in some cases they deserve much more recognition. As the awards season passes and the hype around the release dies down, some of the most acclaimed films end up being forgotten by younger audiences.
When it comes to war movies, pretty much everyone can name Band of Brothers, Dunkirk, and Saving Private Ryan, but that doesn't even cover a quarter of the list of perfectly great examples of the genre. The Hurt Locker is one of those films that has been unfairly forgotten in recent years, even though it is still very relevant.

Mike Flanagan, the prolific filmmaker behind “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Doctor Sleep” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” is in talks to direct “The Exorcist” sequel for Universal and Blumhouse, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. The source stressed it’s early days and a deal is far from guaranteed, but there is interest from both sides and Flanagan has a take on the material.
Universal directed TheWrap’s inquiry to Blumhouse, who had no comment.

It seems that a new The Exorcist movie is in the works and no, Russell Crowe is not attached to play the priest who will be doing the exorcising in the movie. But, the upcoming Blumhouse and Universal horror film has seemingly found its director after David Gordon Green, who directed last year’s reboot film The Exorcist: Believer, left the project altogether. As things stand now, renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is in talks to direct the next Exorcist movie, and based on his earlier work, this might be a hit for the two studios.
Not much is known about the project, as it is still in the early production phases, but we know that the two companies plan to make two additional films, completing the sequel (reboot) trilogy. In fact, Green’s The Exorcist: Deceiver was supposed to come out on April 18, 2025, but after Green’s exit, the movie was postponed indefinitely.

"The Exorcist" franchise might soon receive a new lease on life, courtesy of one of the most prolific horror filmmakers around. After last year's "The Exorcist: Believer" failed to take off either among critics or at the box office, it seemed that Universal Pictures might have to go back to the drawing board before pushing forward with their grand plans for subsequent movies about innocent kids getting possessed by malevolent demons. Those plans took even more of a hit when "Halloween" director David Gordon Green exorcised himself from the series, resulting in the sequel "The Exorcist: Deceiver" getting pushed back indefinitely as the studio searched for another filmmaker.
That search seems to be approaching the finish line, however, and fans will undoubtedly be happy with the No. 1 choice. Late last night, Deadline broke the news that Mike Flanagan is currently in talks to direct the next installment of "The Exorcist" franchise.

After releasing The Colorado Kid and Joyland via the Hard Case Crime imprint, Stephen King made his grand debut into the world of hard-boiled crime fiction with Mr. Mercedes. The first in a trilogy, the 2014 novel introduced readers to Bill Hodges, a crusty, retired detective who finds his golden years interrupted by the taunts of a psychopathic killer he failed to apprehend.
A divisive book among the King faithful, Mr. Mercedes is nonetheless an important one, as it introduces Holly Gibney, a recluse-turned-investigator King would go on to feature in four subsequent novels (and one novella), including last year’s Holly.
Join The Losers’ Club’s Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, Ashley Casseday, and Rachel Reeves as they detail the book’s origins, how it differs from the author’s previous forays into crime, and the ways in which it reflects evolving societal fears about domestic terrorism. They also discuss the...

One of last fall’s biggest flops was David Gordon Greene’s limp attempt to revive the “Exorcist” franchise for Blumhouse and Universal. “The Exorcist: Believer” was met with intense pans and a worldwide gross of $137 million. That number may not sound so bad at first until you remember that the rights to the franchise alone cost $400 million. While there have been several sequels (plus a double-prequel) to “The Exorcist” since the groundbreaking original that won Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound (plus seven other nominations including Best Picture), this was the first one to bring Ellen Burstyn back into the world of ancient evils and demonic possession.
Green’s departure from the series was announced in January, and current horror mainstay Mike Flanagan is looking like he will step in, as per a report in Deadline.

Universal Pictures and Peacock forked over an amount somewhere in the range of $400 million to acquire the rights to distribute a trilogy of sequels to the 1973 classic The Exorcist, which we’re going to another collaboration between Blumhouse Productions and director David Gordon Green (who recently delivered a trilogy of Halloween sequels), they were definitely expecting the first entry in the new trilogy to go over better with audiences than The Exorcist: Believer did when it was released last October. (You can read our 4/10 review Here.) The box office numbers were okay, the movie pulled in $137 million on a $30 million budget, but Universal was hoping for a lot better than “okay,” and viewer reactions were largely negative. Soon after the release of Believer, we heard that Universal and Blumhouse still intended to carry out the trilogy, but the follow-ups would be reworked – and Green had left the project. Now it...

Following the exit of David Gordon Green, Doctor Sleep and The Haunting Of Hill House director Mike Flanagan is in talks to make the next Exorcist.
Horror specialist Mike Flanagan – director of The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep and TV’s The Fall Of The House Of Usher, among other things – could be about to direct the next film in the Exorcist franchise.
The report, courtesy of Deadline, comes in the wake of the icy reception to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, intended to be the first part of a trilogy directed by David Gordon Green. After that film’s critical and financial disappointment, Green announced his departure from the franchise in January, and Blumhouse boss Jason Blum hinted that a future sequel would take a somewhat different approach.
“We are definitely going to make another Exorcist movie,” Blum said in March, “but I wanted more time to figure out what it would be.

Recent comments from producer Jason Blum suggested that a retool was in order when last year’s The Exorcist: Believer wasn’t as successful as Blumhouse and Universal hoped. That certainly seems to be the case, as Deadline reports tonight that Mike Flanagan is in talks to direct the next Exorcist movie.
Director David Gordon Green was initially on board to direct an entire trilogy of new movies in the franchise, with The Exorcist: Believer intended to be only the first film in that three-film sequel series. Originally set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, sequel The Exorcist: Deceiver was delayed when Green left the project.
If talks come to fruition, Flanagan will take over, likely steering the franchise in a new direction.
The first film in the trilogy was released theatrically on October 13, 2023, with Leslie Odom Jr. starring alongside a returning Ellen Burstyn from the original classic.

Renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan (The Life of Chuck) is in talks to direct the next Exorcist film for Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, sources have confirmed to Deadline.
Uni and Blumhouse declined comment. Should a deal make, Flanagan would take over the reins from David Gordon Green, who exited the rebooted franchise back in January. Universal and Blumhouse bought rights to The Exorcist from Morgan Creek back in July 2021 for $400M, and while the plan at that point was for at least three new films to be made, it’s unclear whether Flanagan would be on for more than one.
Starring Leslie Odom Jr. as well as franchise veteran Ellen Burstyn, trilogy launcher The Exorcist: Believer fell beneath expectations when it opened to a soft $26.4M domestic last October, going on to gross $65.5M U.S./Canada, $136.2M WW.
