“Mare of Easttown” Primetime Emmy Award winner Kate Winslet is making her return to HBO — this time, as a power-hungry, insufferable political leader. Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs direct the series about an unraveling authoritarian ruler, with Oscar winner Winslet joined in the cast by Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and Hugh Grant. Watch the latest trailer below.
The limited series, created and showrun by Will Tracy, premieres on HBO and Max March 3. Voting for the Emmys nominations begins June 13. That may feel like a long way off, even though the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards just happened (courtesy of the strikes) January 15. Place your easily made bets: Winslet will be part of the conversation once again this year.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro may be the Oscar winners headlining Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” but there’s actually a third among the supporting cast. So let’s take a look back at Brendan Fraser‘s journey to winning Best Actor for “The Whale” earlier this year.
Adapted from Samuel D. Hunter‘s 2012 stage play, “The Whale” starred Fraser as Charlie, a 600-pound English teacher who isolates himself from the world but is given a chance at redemption as he attempts to restore his relationship with his estranged daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink). The film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2022, where it got a standing ovation. From that moment on, experts started to pencil Fraser in as a front-runner for the Best Actor Oscar.

Long regarded as one of Hollywood’s genuine good men, Brendan Fraser saw a meteoric rise to fame in the late 1990s and early 2000s. During this time, Fraser starred in a true blockbuster franchise with The Mummy trilogy. And he was also lauded for roles in highly acclaimed dramas like The Quiet American and Gods and Monsters. But not every movie has been a hit. And when Fraser was working on Furry Vengeance, he reconsidered his career.

Brendan Fraser says the role of dangerously obese teacher Charlie in the upcoming The Whale is “the biggest challenge” of his career.
The Whale premiered this weekend at Venice Festival, and Fraser spoke today of the “great opportunity to step into the physical being of another man and tell the rich internal life story that he carries.”
He said: “This presented the biggest challenge. Charlie is the most heroic man I have ever played because his superpower is to seek the good in others and bring that out in them. In that process, he’s on his journey of salvation.”
The Whale is a psychological drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky, from a screenplay written by Samuel D. Hunter, based on Hunter’s 2012 play of the same name. The story follows a reclusive English teacher living with severe obesity, who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter for one last chance at redemption.

"The Whale" is a film I'm eying with a mix of interest and worry. On the one hand, it's a showcase for Brendan Fraser, a beloved actor who came to fame in the 1990s before falling on hard times due to a variety of hardships both personal and professional in nature. Fraser is now in the middle of a well-deserved comeback, having garnered critical acclaim for his work in TV shows like "The Affair" and "Trust," as well as his turn in Steven Soderbergh's crime flick "No Sudden Move" and his ongoing role as the voice of the robotic superhero Cliff Steele in the series "Doom Patrol."

In a time where the Internet has not been able to agree on anything, one thing has seemingly united everyone: Brendan Fraser. At the end of the 20th Century, Fraser was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, where he was able to match his matinee idol looks with a light-hearted, goofy persona that endeared him to millions most notably in "The Mummy" films. Once the 2000s rolled around, Fraser was on quite a losing streak. You had Harold Ramis' remake of "Bedazzled," the reviled Best Picture winner "Crash," the underrated but underperforming "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," and the grisly one-two punch of "Extraordinary Measures" and "Furry Vengeance" in 2010 basically cementing his time as a Hollywood leading man as over.

MCU Phase 4 has been a time of experimentation for Marvel Studios. After a slam dunk Phase 3 climax with Avengers: Endgame, there was a shift as Marvel seemed to understand that in a lot of ways they had to start from scratch by building new corners inside their established universe. Ms. Marvel Episode 1
MCU Phase 4 has been a time of experimentation for Marvel Studios. After a slam dunk Phase 3 climax with Avengers: Endgame, there was a shift as Marvel seemed to understand that in a lot of ways they had to start from scratch by building new corners inside their established universe. This weekend we have a holiday and what better way than to fill that extra day with brand new television? Time to catch up, recharge, and maybe watch that new “Theodore Roosevelt” documentary. It’s what America would have wanted. After the break, the new shows keep coming, from a fictionalized account of the Sex Pistols to the return of “The Boys,” to a spinoff of “Nancy Drew” that seems very, very different. It’s almost Too much good TV.

Emily in Paris has a new hunk in town for season two, and his name is Lucien Laviscount. The British actor first broke into the acting scene in 2007 after landing a reoccurring role in the British soap series Grange Hill. Lucien's talents took him across the pond eight years later when he starred as a preppy bad boy in Ryan Murphy's highly successful thriller series Scream Queens. Fun fact: His character's name, Earl Grey, was a comedic homage to his hometown roots. Since then, he's added several more credits to his résumé including Katy Keene and Trust, a new steamy thriller starring Nina Dobrev. Now, Lucien is gearing up to win over fans' (and Emily's) hearts in season two of Netflix's over-the-top drama series Emily in Paris, where he'll be playing Alfie, a charming transplant from England and a competing love interest. Get acquainted with the actor ahead.

In his film “The Mute Man of Sardinia” (“Il Muto di Gallura”) Turin-born Matteo Fresi reignites the feud between the Vasa and Mamia families, which caused the deaths of more than 70 people in mid-19th century Sardinia. Focusing on deaf-mute Bastiano Tansu, he shows an outsider who – mistreated and marginalized all his life – turned into a feared assassin, driven into a killing frenzy following his brother’s murder.
“My father is from Sardinia, from Gallura, so I would hear about these events a lot. It’s a famous story in that region, yet completely unknown in the rest of the country,” Fresi tells Variety after the film’s premiere at Torino Film Festival, admitting that he reached out to the locals in order to find out a bit more. In 1884, Enrico Costa published a novel about Tansu, described by the helmer as a “very precise” take on the violent conflict.

Brendan Fraser has been cast in DC’s upcoming “Batgirl” movie. He will play the villainous Firefly, a sociopath with a passion for pyrotechnics, opposite star Leslie Grace.
Specific plot details for “Batgirl” have been kept under wraps, though it centers on Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham police commissioner Jim Gordon. J.K. Simmons is returning to portray Jim Gordon after first playing the character in Zack Snyder’s “Justice League.”
“Bad Boys for Life” filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct “Batgirl” for Warner Bros. Christina Hodson is writing the screenplay.
“Batgirl” is set to premiere on HBO Max, the streaming service backed by WarnerMedia, sometime in 2022. The project is notable because it marks one of the first major DC Comics properties to skip theaters in favor of streaming. Plus, it’s one of the studio’s rare comic book adventures — following “Wonder Woman” and its sequel,...

The expanding Antalya Film Forum dedicated to fostering a new generation of Turkish directors seems poised to really have the goods this year for buyers and festival programmers who would like to know what’s coming down the pike.
The Antalya Film Festival’s industry section – which will run online Oct. 6-8 — features a fresh batch of projects spanning a wide range of often innovative genres mostly germinated from rookie producer-director teams that provides a sharp snapshot “of what’s to come,” vows the Forum’s new co-chief Müge Özen.
Özen, who is a young but experienced producer of standout titles from Turkey such as recent Istanbul hip-hop scene drama “When I’m Done Dying,” which was a Forum project in 2017, has now taken the section’s reins with Pınar Evrenosoğlu.
She points out that “the selection is very different from previous years” since seven out of the eight feature projects...
