Clichéd Until It Becomes So Much Worse
16 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This Polish killer thriller rehashes every cliché from Scandi-Noir streaming series (plus a dallop of Austin Powers for some reason), reverses its snow tires over the remains, and then rehashes them again. Foreboding chilly setting? Check. Rulebreaking cop with a screwed-up home life and a personal stake in the investigation? Check. Serial killer with a brutal and extremely convoluted methodology who manages to leave no useful trace evidence? Check. Villain who lives in a fortress of solitude and explains everything to the main character before deciding to kill him in an overly-elaborate and easily-escapable manner? Also check. Dumpy middle-aged man who's irresistible to all types of femmes fatale? Yup.

The main killer's motives are all over the place but otherwise this series is about as formulaic as it gets. At least until the last episode. That's when audience members expected our patience with this series' innate silliness would be rewarded: the dots would be connected; the red herrings would be bleached down to regular herrings; and the main character would expose the killer in a predictable but satisfying finale. Nope. The last 20 minutes of this series decided to break free of clichés and really subvert our expectations by just making no sense.

As such we're left with a mess of loose ends about war crimes, human trafficking, corruption conspiracies and personal vendettas. And the worst part is an extremely illogical and out-of-the blue character reversal. It's dumb and it gets no explanation. It feels like a cheat because it is. It's some deus ex machina nonsense by lazy hack writers without the talent or inclination to stick to a coherent narrative.

Do not waste your time.
