Ramping Up The Tension

Andrew and Virginia Stone are responsible for this New York-based thriller about a man who uses bomb threats to exact money from airlines. The primary cast is strong, featuring Rod Steiger as Paul Hoplin, the mastermind who always seems to be two steps ahead of everyone else, James Mason as Jim Molnar, the man who falls into Hoplin's web of villainy, Inger Stevens as Mrs. Molnar, Neville Brand as henchman Steve, a scary underling in Hoplin's plan, and Jack Klugman and Angie Dickinson as the other co-conspirators.

The story keeps viewers on edge with its threat of terrible consequences for the Molars and their daughter if Hoplin's plans are thwarted. While the clock counts down, the tensions ramps up and the hostages sweat.

This is the second film role for Miss Stevens, and she handles most of the major emoting very convincingly. Of the rest, Rod Steiger stands out. He is a menacing machine-like mastermind who has visions of a big score and is confident of his plan.

The production lacks the stylistic touches of a Hitchcock, for example, but it feels grounded in the city and benefits from its location shooting.
