I wanted to like this version but I didn't. There were a lot of issues before this film came out especially with the unsettling looks of Sebastian, Scuttle, and Flounder. Despite this, it wasn't my main issue with the film. My main issue was how much some of it strayed from the original film. Ariel's Part of Your World was not nearly as impactful as the original nor was her father's wrath. Ariel also learning how to be human was different from the original as well. The added songs were not necessary. The Prince looks great on paper but he's a rather bland character. They also didn't give Ariel her trademark red hair and green tail. Her nativity and innocence was lacking.
The best part of the film was Melissa McCarthy's Ursula. From the deviousness to the special effects to the person playing Vanessa, Ursula stole the show.
Overall, it was a disappointment and Disney should stop remaking their cartoon films into real life films. Some things just don't work and translate that well.
