Any system that does not place Our Mother Earth at its center can only bring imbalances is a theme dear to Jean-Jacques Annaud, who was hired to direct this adaptation of Lü Jiamin's semi-autobiographical novel thanks to his experience and its know-how in the field of films paying homage to Nature in general, and more particularly by working with wildlife.

Annaud films the breathtaking beauty of the Mongolian steppes with a love that shines through in each of his wide shots.

The main character is a young student from Beijing who finds himself sent to rural Inner Mongolia in 1967, at the height of China's Cultural Revolution, to teach in rural areas that still lack access to public education.

Chen Zhen is overwhelmed by the beauty and wisdom of the natives, who live in harmony with their environment. They are confronted with the narrow mentality of peasants who have come to shape their environment instead of living in harmony with it, thus forgetting to respect the natural balance that gives Us Life.
