Nil by Mouth (1997)
7/10
Powerful Directorial and Writing Debut by Gary Oldman
12 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Ray and Val have a young daughter and another child on the way. Ray is a brute, a petty criminal and a substance abuser. Val's younger brother is a petty criminal and a severely dependent addict who shuttles between his sisters couch and his mothers garage, and usually depends on his mother to support his habit if not drive him to his dealer.

Unflinching, semi-autobiographical documentary style portrayal of a working class London family that is depressing, sad and ugly, and give us a despairingly realistic portrayal of substance abuse and domestic violence.

Strong emotional and unaffected performances from a largely unknown cast.
