Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (2008 Video Game)
10/10
I love this game!

Warning: Spoilers
If you're looking for a great Spider-Man game, you needn't look any further than "Spider-Man: Web of Shadows". It has pretty much everything a Spidey fan could ask for from a video game.

Graphically, the game is very impressive. The characters look amazing and their movements are all very fluid. The 3-D open world map of New York City is simply stunning and is a hell of a lot of fun to explore.

The control scheme is simple and "makes sense". In other words, it won't take long before you're web slinging across Manhattan or beating baddies to a pulp.

The voice acting is good overall, but the actor who voices Spider-Man is pretty lousy. To be fair, he seems to improve as the game goes along, but is almost unbearable at the beginning of the game. All the other characters are just fine.

The plot is, in my opinion, kind of polarizing. You'll either love it, or hate it. It just depends on whether or not you're a fan of Spidey's symbiote-related story lines. If you are, you're in good shape. If not, I think the gameplay is still fun enough to draw you in.

A cool feature of the game is its "suit-alignment" feature. Basically, you get to choose whether or not you want to wear the classic red and blue costume or the sleek symbiote suit, or simply bounce back and forth between both. Whenever you perform heroic deeds, you earn red points. Conversely, whenever you shirk your superhero responsibilities, you earn black points. Each suit has its own upgrades that can be unlocked as you progress through the game. In my opinion, neither suit is better than the other, as they both have their own pros and cons. But personally, I'm a sucker for the classic duds.

Another nice touch is the inclusion of a strong supporting cast of other great Marvel Comics characters such as Wolverine, Black Cat, Luke Cage, Black Widow, Moon Knight and more! Many of which you can call upon for assistance whenever any particular skirmish becomes too difficult.

Overall, I'd say "Web of Shadows" is a great game and definitely one worth checking out. I think the symbiotes worked great for this game, but I would definitely like to see a change of pace in a future title. Over the last several years, symbiote-related story lines have flooded the Spider-Man marketplace and with Spidey boasting probably the greatest rogues gallery of villains of any hero, Marvel or DC, it'd be nice to see him take on someone of the non-symbiote variety next time.

I know I, along with I'm sure countless others, am looking forward to checking out "Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions" when it comes out in September. Hopefully, it'll be just as good, if not, better than this game. I guess only time will tell, so 'til then we'll just have to wait and see.
