This past weekend was, without a doubt, one that several studios and pretty much every movie theater around the country (and much of the world for that matter) would like to forget. Several new releases hit theaters, including Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," as well as Crunchroll's latest anime film, "Spy x Family Code: White." It was, however, Universal Pictures' horror/comedy "Abigail" that was the most high-profile release of the bunch. While the film did perform better than the other debuts, it fell well short of expectations and further cemented a point that has been quietly lingering for some time: Vampires are not generally good for business these days.
"Abigail" opened to just $10.2 million, coming in second place over the weekend to Alex Garland's "Civil War," which pulled in $11.1 million in its second frame. Overall, it was one of the worst weekends at the box office in 2024 to date.

The Universal Monsters brand has had a rather mixed reception over the past 14 years or so. The 2010 remake of The Wolfman was a bomb, 2014’s Dracula Untold underperformed and the 2017 remake of The Mummy killed off the Dark Universe before it even began. However, the 2020 interpretation of The Invisible Man was rather well received and financially successful.
Now, as Universal attempts to reinvigorate the brand with a 2024 The Wolfman film and the Dark Universe section at Epic Universe, a beloved classic will be returning to theaters for its 25th Anniversary. The 1999 versions of The Mummy will be returning to the big screen this April in partnership with AMC.

Milla Jovovich returns to the genre she knows so well with World Breaker. She stars opposite Luke Evans from Fast & Furious 6 and Dracula Untold. Brad Anderson is in the director’s chair for this science-fiction film. Anderson is known for such bleak projects as Session 9, The Machinist (which famously had Christian Bale lose a scary amount of weight prior to playing Batman) and Transsiberian. He has been dabbling in TV over the recent years, having directing for shows like Titans, The Man in the High Castle and Peacemaker.
The synopsis for World Breaker, according to Deadline, reads,
“Five years ago, a tear in the fabric of reality brought creatures to our world from an alternate dimension bent on our destruction. A father hides his daughter on an island to keep her safe while he prepares her for survival and the battles to come. But when the world is about to break,...

With the original movie achieving hit status upon its release and gaining a dedicated fan base, it has since evolved into a franchise with multiple sequels and a television series.

Countless different types of Count Dracula stories have been told on the screen over the years, from Bela Lugosi’s black & white icon to Nicolas Cage’s scenery chewing take in Renfield.
The origin story of the Dracula character has also been told, most notably in Gary Shore’s 2014 movie Dracula Untold. And THR reports this week that it’s about to be told again.
Caleb Landry Jones (Antiviral) will star in an untitled Dracula origin story for director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element), which is said to be a “big budgeted film.”
The Hollywood Reporter previews that the movie will be a “retelling of Bram Stoker’s classic Gothic tale with Landry-Jones set to play the Transylvania Count-turned-vampire.”
The site also notes, “Besson’s take will focus on the beginning of Dracula’s life and relationship with his wife.”
Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) is also in talks to star.

Well, wanting to succeed despite having repeated failures is indeed an admirable thing to do. That’s what Madame Web writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless might be striving for after working on countless films with a not-so-good run.
From Dracula Untold to Morbius, the duo of Sazama and Sharpless have worked on several films together. What the duo has not yet received is appreciation for their work. Well, adding salt to their wounds, the writers got trolled for their careers as fans took to X to hold them responsible for the failure of Madame Web!

A series of connected creature features, starting with a new version of The Mummy (watch it Here), a big budget adventure film led by Tom Cruise. It sounds like a success story in the making, but something went wrong on the way to the screen. The Mummy was a financial failure, poorly received by critics and movie-goers alike. The Dark Universe was dead on arrival. So let’s look back at this bungled attempt at creating a cinematic universe and find out What the F*ck Happened to The Mummy.
The Mummy franchise started in 1932 with a film that starred the legendary Boris Karloff. He played Imhotep, an Ancient Egyptian high priest who was buried alive for attempting to resurrect the love of his life. Returned to life thousands of years later,...

Some of the movies we talk about have opinions fueled by nostalgia if they are good or reputation if they are bad. Of course, everything is subjective when speaking about how you feel about a movie. It can be tied to events in your life that make you happy or sad. You can enjoy it on the strength of an actor, writer, or director you enjoy being involved or hate it for those exact reasons on a creator not being your favorite. Some things are irrefutable though such as box office or critical appraisal. Van Helsing (watch it Here) was the culmination of what Stephen Sommers had been working towards with tales of fantasy like The Adventures of Huck Finn...

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist.
Traditionally speaking, vampire stories have boasted a unique kind of versatility that most other subgenres can only dream about. In the last decade alone, they've run the gamut of high-water marks like Taika Waititi's mockumentary "What We Do In The Shadows" and Jim Jarmusch's soulful "Only Lovers Left Alive" to epic lows such as "Dracula Untold," "Morbius," and, well, take your pick of literally any of the "Underworld" movies. 2023 alone has seen two "Dracula" adaptations debut with various degrees of success, but the last quarter of the year brings us the most distinct and boundary-pushing vampire flick, by far -- courtesy of one of the most unexpected sources imaginable.

In the wake of failing to recoup its budget with just $15 million worldwide at the box office, Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter has now been surprise-released at home.
On Digital, you can rent the film for $19.99 or purchase it for $24.99.
Directed by André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), this latest Dracula movie leaves the comedy of Renfield behind for a classic, Hammer-style horror movie at sea. The film is an adaptation of a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic horror novel, known as “The Captain’s Log,” which has never been adapted like this before.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is unfortunately another financial misfire for the Universal Monsters, which have been largely unable to find box office success in recent years.

The box office underperformance of The Mummy back in 2017 notably spelled the end of Universal’s “Dark Universe” plans, the film intended to kickstart a Marvel-style universe for the Universal Monsters to hang around in. With the “Dark Universe” dead on arrival, Universal quickly pivoted to smaller one-shot horror tales, kicking off with The Invisible Man in 2020.
Made on a budget of just $7 million, director Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man scared up $144 million worldwide right before the pandemic decimated the box office, suggesting that Universal had finally figured out a way to turn their iconic monsters into box office stars again.
But then came Renfield earlier this year, a horror-comedy take on Dracula and his loyal henchman. Made on a reported production budget of $65 million, Renfield was a flop in theaters back in April of this year, sinking its fangs into just $26.7 million at the box office. Alice Eve battles paranormal spirits in the latest trailer for Haunting of the Queen Mary, a supernatural horror mystery that has two families violently entangled when sailing aboard the real-life ocean liner on Halloween night in 1938 and the present day.
As Erin, played by Eve, and husband Patrick (Joel Fry) board the infamous ship with their young son Lukas, played by Lenny Rush, their voyage comes to resemble, in mystery and violence, the experience of another family that sailed aboard the namesake ship in 1938.
As Erin begins to see the haunted ghosts the ocean liner holds from its dark past, she and her husband realize there’s only one way out for them — into the ship’s depths where violent secrets are revealed.

Neon is climbing into the passenger seat of Michael Mann’s Ferrari, a new film from the celebrated director starring Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz. Ferrari looks to premiere at the Venice Film Festival at the end of August, with Neon acquiring the rights in North America in a competitive situation. According to Deadline, Ferrari is racing into theaters on Christmas Day 2023. Dracula Untold director Gary Shore has a new horror film called The Queen Mary headed our way – and Variety reports that Vertical has picked up the North American distribution rights. They’re planning to release the film sometime this summer.
The Queen Mary is a real luxury ocean liner that transported generations of the rich and famous before being docked in Long Beach, California… and it has been called one of the world’s most haunted places. Variety informs us that in the early 20th century, shipping lines competed to be the fastest to complete a transatlantic crossing. But among the most famous record-holders was the Rms Queen Mary, which held the record for 14 years, but is now docked in Long Beach where it has been used for many years as a luxury hotel and tourist attraction. Stakes, silver-tipped canes, and torches are all dependable ways to kill off the classic Universal Monsters. But the one common, unifying monster-slayer they are all powerless against is poor box office. This was very clearly communicated by the failure of Renfield, Universal’s attempt at resurrecting Dracula and his title sidekick in a modern horror-comedy where Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) acted more like a supernatural superhero than the simpering, wild-eyed Dwight Frye of old.
Not even the Scenery-Chewer Supreme that is Nicolas Cage could save Renfield from a meager $8 million opening weekend haul that saw the movie have its lunch eaten by Russell Crowe in The Pope’s Exorcist. This isn’t the first attempt either in the last 10 or 20 years to drag the undead out of their graves: Van Helsing (2004), The Wolfman (2010), Dracula Untold (2014), and the disastrous The Mummy (2017) all climbed back into the Universal Monsters’ tombs as quickly as possible,...

Recently, JoBlo was invited to visit the set of Chris McKay’s Renfield, a action-comedy-horror reimagining of the classic master-servant relationship the title character has with the Prince of Darkness himself, Count Dracula (played by Nicolas Cage). While on set, a bunch of us got the chance to talk to Nicholas Hoult about playing the iconic character, working with Cage, and his own take on the classic Dracula mythos. Here’s a transcript of the group interview we got to participate in with Hoult!
So, it sounds like your character goes through quite a journey.
Yeah. Yeah, I guess. In this film, we pick up with Renfield. He’s kind of been working for Dracula for probably around 100 years, just under 100 years or so. So, the Renfield that we’ve seen in–you know, from Bram Stoker’s novels and from previous films, he’s kind of been living in...

If you were paying attention to James Gunn and Peter Safran's presentation about the future of DC superhero movies, you may have noticed that something sounded familiar.
No, it's not the fact that we're getting new versions of movies we've already seen before, like Superman and Batman and Swamp Thing. And no, we're not even talking about how it's yet another series of gigantic promises about an interconnected universe in a modern pop culture environment that eats almost all of those up and spits them out.
In addition to all the tantalizing, puzzling, and just plain weird news about the future of DC superhero movies, there was also a curious choice for a title. This first chapter of Gunn and Safran's interconnected universe will be called "Gods and Monsters," and that's a very specific title with a very specific history connected to it.

Legendary Entertainment, the production and mass media company that has been in bed with Warner Bros. for the last several years, has found a new home at Sony, THR reports today.
THR details, “Under the terms of the deal, Legendary’s movies will be distributed and marketed globally by Sony, excluding China, where Legendary East will handle those duties. Sony will also handle home entertainment and TV distribution for those films. Sony does not have a streaming service, and Legendary will continue to partner with other companies for streaming.”
Important to note, however, “The pact does not include the Dune or Godzilla franchises, which will continue to be released by Warner Bros., Legendary’s previous partner.”
Legendary, you may recall, had moved from Warner Bros. to Universal back in 2014, but the company had already returned to its former home at Warner Bros. by 2019.

When 2014’s Dracula Untold was announced, it was kind of a big deal considering it would be the first major Dracula movie to hit the big screen since Dracula 2000. Sadly, the Vlad the Impaler origin story was met with mixed reviews and sort of came and went upon its theatrical release. But with the movie recently being added to Netflix and immediately shooting to number 4 on streaming service’s top 10 movies list, now is a good time to revisit not just the film but how its characters—particularly Charles Dance’s Master Vampire—were meant to be the original launching pad for the perpetually stalled Universal Monsters shared cinematic universe (later renamed “the Dark Universe”).
Originally, Dracula Untold was at first titled Dracula: Year Zero and had Sam Worthington (Avatar) set to star with Alex Proyas attached to direct. That iteration was then scrapped and reworked, with the project...

Universal Pictures' infamous Dark Universe was not an inherently bad idea. The studio had enjoyed great success crossing over its classic monster movie series going back to the 1940s, at one point even pairing them with comedy duo Abbott and Costello for a run of films. Then, director Stephen Sommers gave "The Mummy" a fresh coat of paint with his 1999 remake, a delightfully cheeky mix of "Indiana Jones"-style action/adventure and supernatural horror that would spawn two sequels and a series of spinoff films about The Scorpion King (a role originated by Dwayne Johnson in 2001's "The Mummy Returns").
Since then, however, Universal has struggled to effectively re-imagine most of its other monsters for the 21st century. Many of its attempts to do so have seen the studio trying to repurpose these characters as superheroes, starting with Sommers' 2004 movie "Van Helsing" and continuing on to 2014's "Dracula Untold," a...

At first, "Netflix & Chills" was very much a try-hard, "How do you do, fellow kids?" style of marketing line intended to promote Netflix's exclusive films and TV shows arriving in the annual lead-up to Halloween, be they horror-related or not. A underrated horror movie has been dominating Netflix all week. For the past several days, subscribers have been loving Dracula Untold, the 2014 supernatural, action-infused horror flick starring Beauty and the Beast actor Luke Evans as the titular legendary vampire. Ever since the 1st, the film has been occupying a spot on the Top 10 most-watched list and today, it sits at #3.
The movie tells the secret origins of Dracula, exploring his beginnings as great military hero Vlad Tepes in medieval Europe, who turns to the dark side – Anakin Skywalker-like – in order to gain the power to destroy his enemies and save those he cares about. As directed by Gary Shore, Untold takes little from Bram Stoker’s original novel, though it does share some concepts with Francis Ford Coppola’s version, and offers a big old reboot of the mythical monster.
Yes, this was one of Universal’s many attempts to relaunch their shared horror universe.

The Dark Universe may have sprung up out of nowhere and then ceased to exist almost as quickly, but Tom Cruise’s disastrous The Mummy wasn’t even the studio’s first attempt at relaunching their stable of classic monsters as the stars of big budget effects-driven blockbusters, although they tried pretty hard to sweep Dracula Untold under the rug.
As the most iconic vampire in history and the second most heavily-adapted fictional character ever behind only Sherlock Holmes, putting a fresh or unique spin on the well-worn tale of Vlad the Impaler is a tricky task, but first-time director Gary Shore gave it his best shot. Essentially a historical epic that takes a turn into the supernatural at around the halfway point, Luke Evans gives a solid performance as a legendary warrior and respected ruler who makes a deal with the dark side to keep his family safe.

Even the most ardent comic book fans would struggle to justify the existence of a Madame Web solo movie, but that hasn’t stopped Sony from putting the project into active development for a second time.
Back when The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was set to launch a litany of sequels and spinoffs that failed to materialize, Cassandra Webb was just one of many names linked to their own adventure, which has to be up there with the rumored Aunt May prequel as one of the most pointless ideas floated in the studio’s offices.
Undeterred, though, Madame Web was announced once again in September 2019 as part of the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless tasked with writing the script. And given that the duo’s previous works include Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter and Gods of Egypt, expectations should be adjusted accordingly.
