A “300” TV series adaptation is in early development at Warner Bros. Television, Variety has learned from sources.
Exact plot details are still being worked out, but sources say that the show would serve as a prequel to the 2006 film. No writer or platform is currently attached to the project.
Deals are still being negotiated, but Zack Snyder, who directed and co-wrote “300,” is in talks to direct and executive produce the series. Deborah Snyder, who executive produced “300,” would also return as an executive producer under her and Zack’s Stone Quarry production banner, with Stone Quarry’s Wesley Coller also on board.

Chris Hemsworth is in talks to join another blockbuster franchise.
After playing Marvel’s Thor and the deranged villain Dementus in George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Hemsworth is in talks to star in the upcoming crossover between the “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” franchises from Paramount.
The “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” crossover was first teased back in last year’s entry, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” and officially confirmed at this year’s CinemaCon by Paramount. In the end of “Rise of the Beasts,” Anthony Ramos’ character Noah meets a shady government operative named Agent Burke, played “House of Cards” star Michael Kelly. He hands Noah a business card, after saving the world with the Autobots, and it’s revealed Burke works for the G.I. Joes, a special team of commandos. The upcoming Venice Film Festival is shaping up to be a star-studded affair with Lady Gaga, Joaquin Phoenix, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Gal Gadot and Ana de Armas among top Hollywood talents likely to be launching high-profile titles from the Lido.
Though festival chief Alberto Barbera has yet to see several submitted works that are likely to make the cut, a clutch of globally buzzy movies have already secured a coveted Venice berth, though some of the more mainstream entries will probably be bowing out-of-competition.

Thanksgiving may be months away, but audiences are already getting ready to feast on Moana 2.
A trailer for the movie was viewed by 178 million people in its first 24 hours this week, more than any other trailer for a film in the history of Disney’s animated empire, which is made up of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. (Moana is from Disney Animation.)
In terms of trailer viewership, the previous record for Pixar was Inside Out 2 (157 million), and the best for Disney Animation was Frozen 2 (116 million). The Moana 2 trailer also came in above Pixar’s Incredibles 2 (113 million).
The Moana 2 trailer will play before Inside Out 2, which opens in theaters June 14. The upcoming Pixar sequel is tracking to open to $80 million-$85 million, although one service believes it will cross $90 million. Both films are good news for Disney’s animation empire, as Pixar, in particular, has been struggling.

How quickly times change. There once was an era when Pixar didn’t think it needed sequels and could just go from original story to original story. In fact, in 2016, Pixar’s president Jim Morris said there were no Pixar sequel plans after Brad Bird’s “The Incredibles 2,” something of a response to the underwhelming reception to “Cars 2” and, to a lesser degree, “Toy Story 3.

‘The Exorcist’: Mike Flanagan Will Direct “A Radical New Take” On The Horror Franchise For Blumhouse
Well, it’s official: after starting talks with Blumhouse earlier this month, Mike Flanagan will write, direct, and produce the studio’s next “Exorcist” film. But Deadline reports that the project isn’t a sequel to “The Exorcist: Believer” anymore. Instead, Flanagan will helm “a radical new take” on the horror series for Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, effectively starting the franchise over.
That’s a smart move for Blumhouse, considering how poorly “Believer” fared with critics last October.

In “The Great Lillian Hall,” Jessica Lange plays a veteran theater actress — a legend of the Broadway stage — who is always putting on airs, reciting bits from her favorite roles, and carrying on in the tradition of fabled actresses who get known for playing characters like Blanche DuBois because they’ve actually got a lot of Blanche in them. (They believe their own illusions.) Yet just because Lillian Hall is a flamboyant grand dame doesn’t mean that she’s not showing you who she is. Lange, a beauty at 75, has a face that has only grown more expressive with the years. In “The Great Lillian Hall,” that face is a map of emotion we read. Even when Lillian is being deceptive (even when she’s deceiving herself), the majesty of her feelings shines through.

Just because Celestina, the soon-to-be young wife in the “The Young Wife” told friends and family that while the honor of their presence was requested, they would be attending a party, not a wedding, doesn’t make it so. The weight of family, community and ritual aren’t so easily evaded. Or embraced.
So, on the day of her and River’s nuptials, she appears to be wrestling less with the meaning of marriage and more with the weight of the word “wife.” Warm hearts and cooling feet is nothing new for movies, of course, but Kiersey Clemons’ portrayal of Celestina — her head spinning — raises the stakes of love and liberty.
Writer-director Tayarisha Poe has populated her sophomore feature with characters of a neo-bohemian, united colors-of-who-the-fuck-cares aura. Guests arrive with sartorial flash, expressive finery, hairdos that signal independence for days and attitudes that combine and recombine the traditional with the rebellious.

Gigi and Bella Hadid are joining forces to support relief efforts in Palestine.
The supermodel sisters are collectively donating $1 million, a sum that has been earmarked for equal distribution among four organizations with a focus on children and families: Heal Palestine, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (Pcrf), World Central Kitchen (Wck), and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa).
As a whole, the organizations support humanitarian aid like food and medical programs, assist displaced families, and provide psychological services amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Conflict has been raging in the area following Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
Heal Palestine — the acronym stands for health, education, aid and leadership to represent pillars of the organization’s programs — is a nonpolitical, nonprofit humanitarian group that works to “provide every young Palestinian in Gaza a chance for a brighter future.”

The comedian faces challenges when it comes to co-parenting their autistic son (William A. Fitzgerald) with his ex-wife (Byrne).

The Unintended Role: An Actor Faces Their AI Doppelgänger
Dear Remy,
As an actor whose voice has apparently been hijacked by the specter of artificial intelligence, I find myself in a perplexing, and frankly infuriating, scenario. Picture this: a bustling tech unveiling, all eyes and ears tuned to the debut of the latest AI marvel — only for me to hear what sounds suspiciously like my own voice echoing back! It’s like attending a party you weren’t invited to, only to find out your clone is the surprise guest of honor.
You see, Remy, I always believed that my voice was uniquely mine. I can still remember the first time I received a comment on it: At my middle school drama classes, my teacher described it as “mellifluous.” I was 10 and had to ask them what the word meant. But when they did, I was overjoyed. Since then, I...

Over 8,400 short films were submitted for the 2nd annual Sony Future Filmmaker Awards in Los Angeles, but only six filmmakers walked away with a win Thursday night.
148 countries were represented at the event held at the Cary Grant Theatre on the Sony Pictures Studios lot, with films competing in six categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Environment, Animation, Student and Future Format.
Created by Creo and sponsored by Sony, the black tie affair hosted by “Entertainment Tonight” correspondent Denny Directo was preceded by a week-long industry immersion program and workshops with established Hollywood executives.
Winners were selected by a group of industry experts — including Sony Pictures Classics cofounders/co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, and cinematographers Rob Hardy and Kate Reid, with Unjoo Moon and Robert

Giancarlo Esposito has joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World,” in a villain role as reshoots are underway in Atlanta, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
Esposito had recently hinted in fan press at being involved with a Marvel Studios project, which will apparently spin-off his character into an upcoming Disney+ show.
“The MCU has knocked on my door and it’s a role you won’t predict,” Esposito said. “It will be teased and there will be a series afterwards.”
The reshoots are scheduled to last 22 days, which will add some new action sequences to the superhero pic. Previously, Marvel has brought on writer Matthew Orton back in December to write new material that will be filmed.

While fans have gone wild over the Pitbull cover in “Bridgerton” Season 3’s climactic carriage scene, showrunner Jess Brownell admitted she was “nervous” to see the audience response.
“I picked the Pitbull song and I was a little nervous, because it’s an unusual choice that it might take people out of the scene,” Brownell told TheWrap. “But it’s been so wonderful to see that people have taken to it, that actually it’s given that scene even more depth.”
Brownell added that she knew the carriage scene — which features a steamy, intimate moment between Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) after Colin confesses his romantic feelings for his longtime friend — was strong, admitting she “had a good feeling that people were going to respond to it.”

As the nonfiction space continues to weather larger difficulties in the entertainment and journalism industries, a global nonprofit focused on helping documentarians connect is expanding its reach with some help from the Knight Foundation.
With an investment from Knight Foundation, Video Consortium will partner with local newsrooms to help build out and strengthen their video strategy. They will bring in talent and help train local video journalists.
“We’ll be working with them, wherever they are, to make sure that the stories that they’re telling are authentic and reflect the communities they work in,” says Sky Dylan-Robbins, founder and executive director of Video Consortium.
Dylan-Robbins, herself a journalist and filmmaker having previously worked at NBC News and The New Yorker, started Video Consortium nearly a decade ago, offering clarity on issues from finding funding to finding distribution, all of which can be difficult to navigate, even for mid-career filmmakers.

Mike Tyson postponed his anticipated July 20 boxing match with Jake Paul on Friday due to an ongoing ulcer flare-up and doctor’s orders.
In a statement to media, the boxing legend assured fans that he will continue training in a few weeks and the fight, which was due to stream live on Netflix, will be rescheduled.
“I want to thank my fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time. Unfortunately, due to my ulcer flareup, I have been advised by my doctor to lighten my training for a few weeks to rest and recover,” Tyson said in a statement. “My body is in better overall shape than it has been since the 1990s and I will be back to my full training schedule soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought you some time, but in the end you will still be knocked out and out of boxing for good.

Netflix’s upcoming live boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul is being postponed.
Most Valuable Promotions, which organized the event, said that the July 20 event would have to be postponed at the behest of Tyson’s medical team.
“During a follow-up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals on his recent ulcer flare-up, the recommendation is for Mike Tyson to do minimal to light training over the next few weeks and then return to full training with no limitations,” the company said.
Mvp is planning to release a new date for “later this year” within the next week or so.

How to Watch ‘Young Woman and the Sea’: Is Daisy Ridley’s Historical Drama Streaming or in Theaters?
Before she heads back to a galaxy far, far away again, Daisy Ridley is taking to water, with her new film “Young Woman and the Sea.”
Based on the true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel, Ridley stars as Ederle, taking viewers on her journey through the water. And, if those shots look particularly stunning to you, it could be because the movie also boasts Jerry Bruckheimer as a producer.
The film marks a bit of a rarity for Disney, as it was meant to go to Disney+ — and eventually will, more on that below — but instead pivoted to a limited theatrical release that could get extended.
Here’s everything you need to know about seeing the film.
What is the release date?

Composer Tom Holkenborg looked at his sonic palette for “Mad Max: Fury Road” as a massive rock opera. For the prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” he thought it needed a sonic shift.
Holkenborg, also known professionally as Junkie Xl, lit up a cigarette as he joined Variety from his Amsterdam home and studio to discuss his vision. “The music is commenting on how Furiosa sees the Wastelands and what is happening to her,” he explained. Not only did Holkenborg want the music to feel like a first-person perspective score, he wanted things to be more restrained.
He noted the lack of music for the first six minutes of the film as one example of holding back.
“Furiosa” follows the eponymous heroine, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who is kidnapped by Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus, a new villain. Dementus and his biker bandits take her across the Wasteland in his quest for dominance.

Live Nation appears to be the victim of a cyber attack.
The Ticketmaster owner says that earlier this month it “identified unauthorized activity within a third-party cloud database environment containing Company data… and launched an investigation with industry-leading forensic investigators to understand what happened.”
The company says the breach was primarily in its Ticketmaster subsidiary. A source familiar with the matter says that the issue was with a third-party server hosted by the cloud computing company Snowflake.
To make matters worse, the company says that it appears data is being offered for sale on the dark web.

The shoot will run 22 days, according to insiders. Among the added elements will be some new action sequences. Julius Onah remains the director.

The Spanish language holds a significant presence in the U.S. streaming landscape. As of the first quarter of 2024, Spanish was the foreign language with the highest number of movies available on SVOD platforms in the U.S. and the No. 3 language when it comes to the number of shows available, following Korean and Japanese.
This prominence is not surprising when you consider that Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the U.S., as well as the substantial investment by streaming platforms in Spanish content over recent years. Global successes like “Money Heist” and “Elite” have solidified Spain’s position as one of the top streaming content-producing countries in the world.
Even though the most popular Spanish language-hit shows came from Spain itself, Mexican shows outnumber their Spanish counterparts by more than two to one on U.S. SVOD platforms.
This is largely due to platforms focused on Mexican audiences in the U.

A playwright-turned-screenwriter, John Logan made a name for himself — and earned three Oscar nominations — working with some of the biggest names in the business, in genres ranging period dramas, sword-and-sandal epics and spy thrillers.

Xochitl Gomez, best known for playing Marvel heroine America Chavez in the studio’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is shooting Hive, a horror short from rising Colombian-American filmmaker Felipe Vargas.

Documentarian Lance Oppenheim is like a maximalist Errol Morris.
He makes films that focus on eccentrics and oddballs and the communities they call home, documentaries that invite viewers to gawk at their subjects but do not, themselves, gawk.
In a documentary landscape that too frequently hues to the intentionally bland aesthetic conventions of “realism” — gritty, washed-out photography and hand-held framing masquerading as “objective” — Oppenheim’s films can be assaultive. They’re full of oversaturated colors, hallucinatory shifts in perspective, hyper-intimate close-ups and reenactments that blur lines between reality and subjective fiction.
I was legitimately shocked to look up the running times on Oppenheim’s 2020 Some Kind of Heaven and 2024’s Spermworld and see that both documentaries were under 85 minutes. It’s not exactly a criticism to say that I thought they were both longer. Lance Oppenheim documentaries feel like a lot.
At a solid three hours stretched over three episodes,...

Eric Bolling, host of Newsmax’s “The Balance,” exited the right-wing network Friday after three years. He said that he is taking off to “embark on new endeavors.”
The departure was announced in a statement on Bolling’s website, which said that the host and network simply “decided to part ways,” alluding to news on his future projects coming soon.
A Newsmax spokesperson provided a similar explanation for the host’s exit, saying in a statement that it was a “mutually agreed” departure and that the network “wishes Eric Bolling well in his future endeavors.”
The spokesperson added that Bolling’s 8 p.m. Et show “The Balance” will be canceled and replaced temporarily by “Prime News” starting Monday, helmed by rotating hosts until a new primetime show is announced this summer.
The statement on Bolling’s website reads, “Eric and Newsmax are grateful for their time together and proud of the work they have produced.

As a child of the 1980s, I thought I knew pretty much everything I needed to know about Wham!, just as I thought I had a pretty good handle on the behind the scenes of the late-night all-star recording of “We Are the World.” But maybe that’s why I enjoyed the docs “Wham!” and “The Greatest Night in Pop” so much — a mix of the familiar with those moments of surprise.
In the case of “Wham!,” it’s how Andrew Ridgeley managed to be so gracious as his buddy George Michael went on to a massively successful solo career.

Sony Pictures Television is shuttering its TriStar TV banner.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that TriStar TV exec vp Jennifer Turner and senior vp development Nicole Norwood are leaving as the division is being folded into the larger Sony TV fold. No additional layoffs are expected to come as part of the move.
Reps for Sony declined comment.
The decision to absorb TriStar TV into the larger Sony Pictures Television fold comes at a time of industry-wide consolidation as streamers, networks and studios alike right-size their programming and staffing needs in an era of belt-tightening following the end of the Peak TV phenomenon.
TriStar TV’s mission was to champion diverse, authentic characters and underrepresented voices. Those values have since been incorporated into the larger studio, overseen by Katherine Pope, to whom Turner reported. Sony Pictures Television Studios’ drama department will now oversee the development of current TriStar TV projects.

In “Flipside,” documentary filmmaker Chris Wilcha grapples with personal regrets and middle age through the lens of the documentary projects he started but never finished. The 96-minute doc, which premiered last year at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival, looks at those abandoned ideas including one about television writer David Milch and his connection to jazz photographer Herman Leonard; a passion project on the New Jersey record store where Wilcha worked as a teenager and a look at radio host Ira Glass’ attempts to make a musical.
Writer/director Judd Apatow executive produced “Flipside.” Apatow met Wilcha in 2009 when he hired him to make a behind-the-scenes movie about the making of “Funny People.” Wilcha moved his family of four from New York to Los Angeles to work on the project with the idea that he would become a successful documentary filmmaker. But when that career didn’t take off, Wilcha began a lucrative career making commercials.
