Come Home (2018)
Best thing on Netflix at the moment.
Excellent strong acting and sensitive emotional script writing about a real life subject that affects a lot of people but is rarely covered, namely the breakdown of a marriage and the ensuing fight over custody. It's both sad and poignant yet it somehow manages to strike a balance and avoids being too heavy at the same time. I sympathised with both the parents and the children too, probably because it avoids taking sides and portrays a family dynamics of a family breakdown realistically with likeable characters. I really enjoyed it from the outset and was hooked from the beginning, the best drama I've watched in a long time, quite surprised it hasn't attracted more attention.
Enola Holmes 2 (2022)
Watchable, but part 1 was better.
As per normal with sequels the first instalment was good but they can never seem to quite pull it off a second time; this second episode has lost the freshness of the first and it seems to be trying much too hard, it's pretty messy in places and some of the actually quite heavy political themes feel glib and unsubtle when forced upon what is essentially a comedy caper. The actors to some extent come to the rescue and make decent enough fist of it, Milly Bobby Brown captures the upper class English mannerisms well and makes some good jokes at their expense, although the device of the wacky female lead using arch asides to the audience has been much overused recently and is wearing a bit thin. The costumes and sets are good, I particularly liked Sherlock's flat.
See (2019)
Jason Momoa meets the Hobbit.
Ambitious fantasy action hero caper along the lines of Lord of the Rings but not quite as good, having said that it is very watchable though, as long as you're prepared to ignore the somewhat rickety plotline and the fact some of the characters seem rather unbelievable; the bloodthirsty he-man scenes for instance seem unnecessary and don't tally well with Jason Momoa the caring chieftain as he is portrayed the rest of the time. But all in all it is entertaining fodder, which in the end what is what tv is meant to be.
The Commuter (2018)
Entertaining but forgettable
Seems promising with a good opening sequence but eventually reveals its true colours as yet another cliched Hollywood action movie with the bare minimum of humour or characterisation. A good romp if you like that sort of thing but not really my bag.
