And Just Like That... (2021)
It's still beautiful and enjoyable
Admittedly, the dynamics is a little bit restricted during the beginning of the few episodes mainly because of the departure of a husband and the absence of a friend. It doesn't feel like the old SATC since every character is adjusting to new status, new ideas and new friends, and so are us viewers. As the show progresses, the feeling of old SATC is sort of coming back with the humor, the sarcasm, the weird funny stuff and drama.
I appreciate how AJLT handle the transition well in terms of young to senior, girl to mom, married to single etc. I also like it still touches issues that are very present through the view of something old, something new and something unique. And the last but not least, I love AJLT is coherant with the show's spirit: never giving up on love and never lose hope. I'm glad they've made the show and hope there will be more.
Jiok (2021)
Interesting idea to start with but
To watch this show, one has to suspend a lot of beliefs. To make the cult rise to power and human world as we know regress to the state of theocracy believable isn't that easy. Unfortunately, the show doesn't excute the concept well and most of time viewers have to accept the status quo as it is.
There's no other voice to counter the cult's theory from the experts or the public. Police or military don't seem to care to investigate the crime and supress the violent acts against the cult and Red arrow. The media, which is supposed to hold a great power to expose the truth, doesn't do its job. And last but not the least, scientists don't exist.
This is like a half-baked project trying to get viewers discuss deep meaning of any of these scenarios, but with the reasons mentioned above, I can't take this show seriously.
Aladdin (2019)
Wonderful
Aladdin is going to be one of favorite movies played by real people after 2015's Cinderella. The story, the actors, the costume, the musical, the humor, the visual effects are all top-notch. When the theme song "A Whole New World" came with the scene, I was so thrilled that I had goosebumps. Aladdin and Prince Jasmine truly have great chemistry together. Like Cinderella, this movie teaches us love, courage and kindness. Aladdin is an inspiring piece of art that I fully enjoy.
Four Weddings and a Funeral (2019)
Not a must-see
I'm on the latest episode (5) to make sure if the show can grow on me but, unfortunately, I've found the show is quite bad. I can look past the show isn't super funny but the characters are really uninteresting and unlikable, mostly, due to the lousy script, I think. It lacks the sense of coherence. People show affection or disdain to someone due to certain reasons. One thing leads to another and another to fulfill a sound storytelling. But in this show, it seems something is always missing; one thing jumps to another, so the pacing feels rushed. The dynamics between characters is also odd for the same reason. I think I've seen enough to say the show isn't worth watching.
Steel Country (2018)
A decent film worth watching
The acting of the leading actor Andrew Scott in this film is excellent. The pace is a bit slow and the story isn't mind-blowing but Andrew's effortless performance engages the audience and makes you want to root for him and see how things are going to pan out. My only complaint is that the ending is a little weak.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Too heavy
Four episodes in, I can't keep going forward. The show's selling point is supposed to be ghosts but it focuses too much on family and personal drama. What the characters encounter in the present day is only to bring up their childhood memories that can tight the issues they have with what went down in the house. The show is all gloomy and sad, and mostly tedious and boring, which is not realistic and hard to watch. I literally couldn't watch one episode without breaks because that's how un-entertained I was.
An Affair to Die For (2019)
Mediocre
This is a movie with promising premise but it's not very well scripted. There're many moments you would find yourself questioning the characters intelligence, decisions and actions while watching the movie. I'm not trying to sound smart here, but when I put myself in the characters' shoes, I just find the scenarios too far-fetched. I won't give out too much, but I would say this for example: when someone has a knife in his hand pointing at you with hostility, would you walk towards him?
There're so many ways to go at each turning point in the story that could make the movie a masterpiece but I feel the writer only wants to play safe. I give 5 star because the movie kept me interested to the end, although overall it's not very satisfying.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Really bad
Whoever write the show don't have much common sense.
Sabrina doesn't know some holidays of witches and she disagrees with her aunts on many issues. It seems Sabrina just moved in yesterday instead of being raised by her family. Basically, Sabrina and her family do not share enough extent of trust, so she has to outsource help which is offered by Mary Wardwell, aka Lilith, quite often, which renders Sabrina in a vulnerable state.
Speaking of Mary Wardwell, she presented herself as a conservative woman with timid personality in the beginning of the first episode. Later on, she had a drastic change of her personality and no one got curious and wondered why. Then, she introduced herself as a witch excommunicated by her coven, and instantly the aunts buying her story without further confirmation is another example of convenient plot.
The show flops at the moment they decide to kill Tommy who's Harvey's caring and loving brother. Sabrina went through all the trouble trying to revive Tommy but she's scolded by her witch aunts. If you're rooting for Sabrina, you would feel frustrated for Sabrina and her family are unreasonable but if you're rooting against Sabrina, you would feel our leading character is a rebellious and selfish brat. This storyline doesn't please anyone and actually has very little impact on the whole story.
On top of that, the weird sisters who were the murderers of innocent miners went totally unpunished. I know many things are not necessarily black and white, but there must be a line somewhere; otherwise, it only shows lives of witches are more precious than humans and witches can do whatever they want without consequences. History already taught us the results of inequality among different races, do we really need a show to preach this idea?
After reading other reviews here, I'm aware many viewers are offended by the show's blatantly political statements. Good writers don't have to do that to tell their audience what's right and wrong; they demonstrate it by exquisite storytelling which the show apparently lacks.
