The Wrong Son (2018)
At last ... an entertaining movie.
Excellent thriller, with a dramatic ending. Makes a change from watching such worthy nonsense pumped out these days.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Give me strength.
Ponderous and boring. I gave up watching after an hour and 20 minutes. Whatever happened to entertainment?
The Meg (2018)
Lighten up and enjoy.
It's fun, and that'll do me. I watch films to be entertained, and this was, well, entertaining. As regards the stilted dialogue, I don't take that seriously - it's just part and parcel of the genre, and I shrug it off with a chuckle.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
Definitely not engaging
I knew from the get-go this was going to be bad. Right from the instant I saw Data's plump face.
I thought ... if they aren't prepared to correct that, then how much care and attention will they spend on the rest of the series.
I instantly recalled the later episodes of 'I Dream of Jeannie' when Barbara Eden had, ahem, put on a few pounds. That was embarrassing.
And then there was the wokeness ... the statutory kick-ass female et al.
As for Picard: he appears to have been embalmed and, subsequently - only partially - re-animated.
The script was turgid, and the pacing snail-like. Surely the first episode should be designed to grip your attention.
After precisely 38 minutes I just gave up. I won't be back.
Geostorm (2017)
Worth watching
An entertaining sci-fi thriller-cum-disaster movie with decent special effects and a good storyline. The acting is fine. Granted, the script can be clichéd and cheesy at times (particularly at the end) but, hey, comes with the territory.
Peacock (2010)
Tiresome
I watch movies to be entertained. This was just plain boring.
The Highwaymen (2019)
At last - a movie worth watching
Well done, Netflix. Great cast; period authenticity; involving interaction between the protagonists. A tad slow at times, but that is a minor gripe. Oh, yes, and well shot - no pun intended.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Star Drek
I watched about 20 minutes of this twaddle, and gave up in despair. The to-be-expected female leads, and heavy on the CGI. From what I can gather the political correctness gets worse. "That's enough", I thought, and cancelled my Netflix subscription.
Cargo (2017)
A yawn from beginning to end
This film is appalling on so many levels that I hardly know where to begin.
Well, let's start with the fact that it is not even remotely entertaining.
And then there is Martin Freeman, whose acting ability is limited to a facial expression with a sideways glance, which worked in 'The Office', but has since become tiresome.
I suspected from the synopsis that this would be a pc movie, but I thought I'd give it a go.
The aboriginals are, of course, portrayed positively ... and that is so condescending. Bit like native Americans, who are mysterious and attuned with nature. Cue shamanic, spiritual music.
Sure enough, at the end, luvvy duvvy stuff, with white people and aborigines cuddling up together.
A classic example of how political correctness produces rubbish movies.
Churchill (2017)
Unbelievably boring
I have often thought I would like to again experience watching films such as Aliens, The Thing, Saving Private Ryan or Blade Runner for the first time. All were exciting and entertaining.
What am I served up with now? This tripe. Never mind factual issues, it is just plain boring.
Churchill is, possibly, one of the worst films I have watched (well, I stopped after 50 minutes - my jaw was nearly dislocated with yawning).
Dreadful. How was this ever released?
The Finest Hours (2016)
The Perfect Storm on steroids
Hey, I didn't realise this was a Disney movie until I read other reviews. That is a statement in itself. Thoroughly enjoyed this actioner, and I have no problem with factual errors as I tend to watch movies for entertainment. If I want to be educated I pick up a book ... or Kindle. OK some of the dialogue was a bit stilted, but it was great to watch a manly film for once. Fine effects and the sound was superb on my soundbar.
The Awakening (2011)
Thoroughly enjoyable ghost story
I have just watched this film and, after many trials, I feel I have found a decent ghost story with a satisfying denouement - in among all the pap out there at the moment. Bucking the trend (a la the dreadful re-working of Robert Wise's The Haunting) special effects are kept to a minimum, allowing the characters - especially the exquisite Rebecca Hall - to shine through. A hint of 'The Turn of the Screw' at times, but that is no bad thing.
The Martian (2015)
Disappointing
This film lacked tension and any strong interaction between the characters - such as they were. Quite soon into watching I felt that it was being strangled by political correctness. It is bland; it is beige; it is, quite simply, not compelling. Towards the end I completely lost interest in it, so little did I care about the outcome.
