Lost in Space (2018)
(too) harmless family sci-fi
The concept is great - exciting family friendly science fiction entertainment with hollywood quality special effects and visuals.
But unfortunately the story telling and partially also the actor performances are far behind of what this could be. While the first two or three episoded got me hooked as it really is like cool blockbuster sci-fi - it falls short in long term story and character development. The characters are flat, sometimes the acting and/or the lines are almost cheesy. All just also too predictable.
I'm not sure what the target audience is for this as i feel it's too geeky/sci-fi for the common popcorn family (who might get shocked if there is a f-bomb in a movie) and not edgy/extreme enough for freaks and geeks (like me :))
Overall rather disappointing.
Mindhorn (2016)
surprisingly superfunny british comedy flick
I was sceptical as Netflix so far never offered really funny Netflix originals (with exceptions).
But this movie is really funny. It's british style comedy, like a throwback to older movies. I can't really think of comparable movies, maybe something Johnny English, Pink Panther or even Austin Powers.
If you like silly and slapsticky british style comedy with awkward but great characters and situations, this is a movie you should not miss.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Entertaining, at least
Really well done.
I'm a fan of the old Star Trek shows, so i was looking forward watching this.
And i gotta say it's a nice and modern take on the series. Great special effects and visuals, great storytelling, mostly great cast. Loved the first two episodes much - spectacular! The show is entertaining to watch to say the least.
The psychology factor of Star Trek is also there (Vulcan/Human dilemma, Captain Lorca's character) however everything is quite fast paced - some Star Trek Old school purists might not like that.
Saru's my favorite character.
I also like the "new" Klingons which are less human looking than before but still recognizable as Klingons.
Sonequa Martin-green is a great choice as lead actress. It will be interesting to see her character evolve. And most (un)importantly of all - she is damn' sexy ! :) But why the hell her first name is "Michael"?? Not sexy, not cool.. :)
Stranger Things (2016)
The modernized 80's
The show is really something special. Probably one of the best shows of recent years.
It takes some of the best elements of 80's movies like Goonies or E.T. mixes them up with modern thriller and sci-fi elements to create a really amazingly fun and unique adventure.
Awesome cast, great performances - especially Millie Brown. Exciting story, at times scary, other times funny and charming with lot's of 80's references.
I just can't forget Sean Astin's Goonies-reference line "Yeah? What's at the X? Pirate treasure?". Him having this role and this line in a recent and successful TV show is just so good..!
Season 2 was a bit lesser awesome as i thought some things were a bit too predictable. Overall also less scary feel. I also felt some things like the whole story of Kali (indian Girl) was a bit cut too short, and Kali's gang was a bit too stereotypical.
But in anyway this is one of the greatest shows to watch at the moment, and i think it's so far the best Netflix Original.
Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie (2017)
slow & unspectacular, but really surprisingly good
I really liked the movie, it's a fun concept and would also do well as a TV series.
Handsome (played by Jeff Garlin) is a rather slow, but very intelligent and down-to-earth detective. Somehow his entourage and more or less all other characters in the movie are just nuts, and it's extremely funny to see the main character (Handsome) interacting with them in his slow and down-to-earth way. And i think this is the fun of the movie, these interactions and scenes.
A downer is that the murderer is already revealed in the first scene, it does not really make sense to do that - unless it's a marketing thing :) But maybe it's also a Columbo-kinda thing. On the other hand, the fun part of the movie is really the character interactions. You should not expect a real murder mystery movie.
It does have a "Curb your enthusiasm" vibe to it somehow. I think if you like Jeff Garlins humour you'll like the movie as well.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Special Effects Frenzy / Good Morning Skull Island..
Overwhelming and impressive special effects, the monsters look really great as do all the action scenes.
A great cast of actors with good scenes and dialogue - however due to great deal of action not many scenes with dialogue.
"Back in the days" war movie feel with great soundtrack
It is kind of what i expected, a King Kong movie focused on the happenings on the island with lots of great special effects. It's visually very impressive, however the story clearly lacks depth and surprise. It's nothing really new to the King Kong-"Saga".
Exactly what i expected it to be (in good and bad way).
GLOW (2017)
lightweight entertainment
As a Wrestling & Marc Maron fan i was looking really forward to this and had to watch the show.
For a comedy show to me it's just not funny enough - more like womens afternoon coffee table humour, hehe.. sorry :) - and as drama just no thrill at all, it's more sort of a very light and almost shallow comedy (comparable imo to the last two OITNB seasons).
Alison Brie is a great lead for the show, her performance really well. The other females are alright even though if you can really see there are no wrestling skills (apart from Awesome Kong obviously), the original GLOW wrestler were better. And Marc Maron is just Marc Maron. :)
There's some really cool wrestler cameos (John Morrison, Carlito, Brodus Clay), disappointing a bit though that John Morrison was not kept as a regular character.
This show to me has a way too "light" taste, there's nothing really to it, "lightweight" entertainment, too mediocre and almost boring for what it could be - for how cool it could be with this brilliant idea of a 80s wrestling comedy/dramedy show. Still not totally bad, but not more than 5 Points from me.
The Shallows (2016)
visual high & sexy definition but rather simple "story"
Undoubtedly very appealing due the beautiful scenery, the nice camera shots, the awesome beach and of course the very sexy lead actress..
Not only sexy, her acting was convincing enough to keep it suspenseful until the end. Really great performance, the movie could've failed if wrong casted.
It's not a really original movie, the story is extremely simple but it works. It's entertaining, suspenseful, at times quite unrealistic but hey i don't expect it to be a documentary :)
Death Note (2017)
Entertaining Japan-Americanized Fantasy-Horror Movie
I never heard of/saw/read the original Anime/Manga so i watched this movie without any prejudgment.
And i have to say i thought it was a highly entertaining supernatural/fantasy-horror movie with a nice build to the finish.
I was not convinced by all acting performances, and thought partially the cast could have been better as well as the enactment. But overall it was still exciting to watch.
I loved the character of Ryuk, and Willem Dafoe as Ryuk is just absolutely perfect. "Humans are so interesting" - great ending line for Ryuk! It might probably be true that the movie does not match the greatness of the original, but on it's own for people like me - without knowing about the Japanese original - who just wanna be entertained by a fun fantasy-horror movie, this is a good one.
Okja (2017)
Okja is OK!
The cast, acting performances, the setting, the presentation, photography - everything is really, really good. I like the style of Joon-ho Bong a lot (Snowpiercer, The Host.. great movies!).
However, i felt the story was quite mediocre. It's basically a girl loves a sort of "endangered" animal story, not really original or new/fresh.
Also i'm not so fond of the chosen "design" of Okja / the Superpigs, i felt they could have looked better, either more tasty or more scary/weird. :)
Overall, a entertaining, very specially presented sort of child movie made for adults. Okja is OK! Ja.
The IT Crowd (2006)
great comedy show
Such a great show, love it. Heavy on the punchlines and slapstick side, but also on the kind of "seinfeld"-eske side with the everyday or more specifically IT Support (or Nerd) situations and problems.
Gotta love the characters and funny situations they get into. Would be so deserving of more seasons and episodes.
British style comedy show at it's best.
Trailer Park Boys (2001)
Trashy but very enjoyable
When first gotten into it, i felt this was too trashy and amateurish almost hard to watch (Season 1). But after watching more episodes with Season 2 & 3 i started to fall in love with the characters and the stupid crazy situations and stories - Julian, Bubbles, Ricky, Cory and most of all J-Roc. I still remember to this day the epic episode "Who's the microphone assassin" - in which J-Roc had a lead role. Bubble's key episode for me was "Bible Pimp" - the way he was p'ssed off about the bible pimp was so funny.
I still wish to this day that J-Roc gets his own spin-off show, Jonathan Torrens is so brilliant as J-Roc.
The humour of the show is partially a bit on the cheap side (dirty, drunk & a lot of swearing) - but it never crosses boundaries and is just extremely entertaining.
And PLEASE DO THAT J-ROC SPIN OFF Show... it would be so dope.. GNOMESAYIN?!!
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Another entertaining Alien-franchise movie
Another really good movie of the Alien franchise. It was highly entertaining, extremely satisfying for me as a sci-fi and alien-franchise fan.
However i felt the story could have had more depth - like the whole thing with the previous inhabitants of the planet as example and also the lead characters could've had more time in it - apart from Michael Fassbender as David/Walter who basically and a bit surprisingly is the lead actor in the movie.
But overall it was a really great, fast paced sci-fi horror flick. I enjoyed it a lot and hope this was not the last chapter of the alien franchise.
Tusk (2014)
Shocker!
What a movie...
It's so great to see a movie like this where they just take a little, crazy and stupid idea and make a high budget movie with great actors of it. Thank you Kevin Smith for having the tusks to do this movie, i'm a big fan of TUSK, definitively.
It's highly entertaining, shocking, funny and smart. It's absurd, yet at the same time realistic and that's why it's really deeply shocking. It's not a movie everyone will enjoy obviously there are some haters (or narrow-minded people) who don't credit it for what it is. But i agree on that it's not for everyone's taste, i'm not sure if i can recommend it to anyone, at the same time i can say it's one of the best recent movies i have seen. You should not expect a classical horror movie, this is something really, really special.
