The Great Gatsby (2000)
best version I've watched
Only reason I watched this was to see some of Stephen's earlier work. OMG, what a talented actor. Taking into consideration that Stephene is British, he did an incredible job of pulling off the American accent. Having seen two versions of the movie and read the book, Stephen's portrayal of Jaye Gatsby was excellent and closer than the book. It had to be a challenging role for him and he did it well.
Sorvino pulled Daisy's character from the bok and put it on the screen well.
Soundtrack fit the movie well as did the scenery.
Well produced.
Emulsion (2014)
Disappointment
I love British mystery movies bit this one just wasn't up to snuff.
First the acting. Having seen Heughan in other venues, this month vie did nothing to challenge his talented acting skills. He seemed a little bland most of the time. At first I thought it was the bbc.co part he was , playing but even the emotional seems lacked depth. The supporting cast was on about the same level.
Second, the plot. The movie had a lot of twist and turns that left you asking more questions. Never did figure out how the guy in the restaurant figured in to the story. At first you think it's some kind of spy movie only to find out it's not.
Third, the soundtrack. The music didn't really seem to fit in with the movie at all.
I would give it two stars and that's being generous.
The Machine (2013)
fairly good movie
I'm not much in to sci-fi movies. I watched this one after seeing Toby Stephens in Black Sails and wanted to see some of his other work. It's a fast pace sci-fi with a subplot human interest story. Reminded me more of a Frankenstein's Bride type of movie with a military twist. Toby Stephen's plays a scientist and, as usual, put in a very convincing performance. Caity Lotz played two parts in the movie. I had not seen any of her work but her performance in this movie was very exceptional in that you had to look close to see the same actress was playing both parts. The soundtrack was well orchestrated to the scenes. Only problem I had with the movie is the language of the military cyborgs.
The Phantom of the Opera (2004)
best production ever
I have seen this on stage and every version on screen since black and white. I was skeptical when I heard Bulter was playing the phantom. He was amazing. Probably the best role he has played to date. The fact that he doesn't sing as well as his two other leading character at first put me off but after awhile it actually enhanced the movie. The quality of his voice is rocky and gave a lot to the role I have never heard in other productions. Wish he would take on more dramatic roles. This film shows he has more talent than we are seeing in his "force" movies. The orchestration is better than actually hearing it live on stage. Emmy Rossum plays a wonderful Christine and her acting and voice are beautiful. No so much operatic but melodious. Of course, Patrick Wilson always puts out a good song but his acting is awesome. Definitely putting this DVD in my library.
First Light (2010)
Impressed
I'm not much for war movies. I watched this because I wanted to see some of Heughan and Lewis's earlier works. I was impressed with both actors performance. The movie wasn't so much about Spitfires as it was on the affects the fighting had on the pilots. It was well produced for a TV movie. Heughan does a great job playing the part of a young inexperienced Spitfire pilot. Lewis also performs well as the "father" to all the pilots. I like the voice-over inserted into the film of the actually pilot Heughan played. All in all it was a good TV movie. There s strong language so I would not recommend it for children under 16. It would be a good film for a hight school history class.
