La otra conquista (1998)
All Shades of Truth
I personally enjoyed this film because it addresses a human right's issue, and a part of history that's been ignored/altered. History is ofter conveniently miss written to fit the narratives of the survivors, and it's great when a film maker chooses to show a different side of this story.
The idea that the Aztec had a counter conquest on the Spaniards is fascinating, and makes me wonder how many other colonized countries did the same?
Coming from a country that underwent colonization I can empathize and relate to the loss of cultural identity that follows such "revolutions". Traditions are lost, language's distorted, and history is written through biased eyes.
The movies inspires young film makers such as myself to ask difficult questions about our past; to highlight the complexities of our people, and not to portray them as monolithic ethnicities; to strive for truth, and to believe that the truth is worth telling despite any rejections.
Dom za vesanje (1988)
Magical Realism
This is a very well crafted coming of age story of a young Gypsy boy who goes through a lot to discover that he can't escape fate.
It's cyclical structure makes it feel like it's an unending story which is bound to repeat it's self with every new generation, and once can't help but notice this.
The use of magical realism to enhance the narrative is also well done, and as much as it comes of as a motif at first, we finally see the relevance of it all during some of the final scene.
It's mixed genres also makes it easier for us to come in to the film, and join our protagonist through he's journey. Through a bit of comedy the director makes it easy to address some of the subject matters he dives into.
I really enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it to everyone.
Fa yeung nin wah (2000)
Great Film Great Cinematography
This movie just jumped to the top of my 5 most favorite movies. I thought it was well done both visually and story wise. As an aspiring director and Cinematographer I was completely blown away by the directors use of visuals, audio and edits to enhance the overwhelming attraction between the two main protagonists.
He's "dream like/fantasy" look and feel brings you in to Mr. Cho and Mrs. Chan world where they fantasize about each other. This is mirrored and enhanced in the movie by the use repetitious scenes and shots experienced by both actors. The slow motion sequences running parallel to the music also give you a feeling of "love in the air", which is exactly what the movie is about.
The cinematography is also brilliant; this was perhaps the most appealing aspect of the film. Almost every shot was a dirty shot, which gave it a constant feeling of tension which meant I couldn't take my eyes of the screen. This is exactly the type of visual style I would love to experiment with, so I will definitely be watching Mr. Kar Wai Wong's work extensively.
