Possum (2018)
A film that crawls under your skin and lives there for a while.
Writer and Director Matthew Holness, whom some may know as "Garth Meranghi" and other comedy roles, adapts his own short story and the results are spectacular.
Capturing the vibe and feel of 70's horror and PSA films this film literally crawls under your skin and lives there.
Sean Harris gives a super intense performance as "Philip" a disgraced children's entertainer who carries around a monstrous, spider like puppet named "Possum" in a brown leather bag that he is trying to get rid of and consistently fails to do so. Along with his sinister and questionable relationship with his uncle "Maurice", played with similar intensity and extra creep by Alun Armstrong.
The subtext of childhood abuse and trauma is really well done. The puppet represents "Philips" trauma and no matter how hard he tries to get away it just keeps following him and never letting go, leading to some startling images and some scenes involving "Possum" that are pure nightmare fuel. That puppet alone deserved every accolade that it could get.
It's certainly not for everyone and the pace is slow and deliberate. But this is a very confident and assured feature debut by Holness and I cannot wait to see what he does next.
Behind Her Eyes (2021)
What was that?
A drama about a man having an affair with a woman he works with and his wife is a bit of a lonely psycho with a mysteries past who befriends the woman then it goes all supernatural out of left field and has an ending that is so stupid that I came up with others off the top of my head that would have fitted the story better and at least made sense of the "Twist" that followed.
Add to that subpar performances and a tone that is oh so serious it doesn't fit the change from Drama to Supernatural thriller at all.
If this were a bit more "I know this is dumb BUUUUTT!." Going for it then ok I'd see it as a possibly fun thing to watch. But it's so serious and trying to be sexy that it just becomes laughable. To be honest I was bored after the first 3 episodes but had to see it through to find out what happens.
I've seen people compare this to "Twin Peaks". Both have melodrama, wild moments supernatural moments but these are done a million times better. Plus the story and characters are vastly superior and are not boring.
It's not even so bad it's good. It's just bad. I just want to have fun but this was stupid and irritating. 4 main characters whose motivations change at the drop of a hat over 300 minutes of TV gets dull real fast.
It's all subjective but this was trash. I only gave it 2 stars due to the sheer audacity of the story and thinking it's making something profound and jaw dropping when it was just dumb.
Bluey: Sleepytime (2020)
A massive achievement
One of the best episodes of television I have ever seen. Warm, funny, sad and uplifting, this put me through the wringer. I've been a blubbering mess more than once watching this, and with it being on constant rotation on my tv cos of my kids, it's been a lot.
Amazing episode from one of the best shows on TV. Regardless if it's a kids show.
Confessions of a Time Traveler - The Man from 3036 (2020)
A spectacular waste of time
I love how the time traveler speaks with a perfect American accent despite the fact language changes over time and The US, China and Russia apparently set up a corporation and there's no hybrid accent as I assume you'd have to learn the other's language to survive in this "Future".
Avoid at all costs. Spend 35 minutes having a dump and watching videos on YouTube. It's far better and more rewarding.
Hey Duggee (2014)
The best Show for Kids and Adults Since "Spongebob"
Hands down the best show for kids and adults since "Spongebob Squarepants".
It references "Apocalypse Now" in an episode for Christ's sake. Who is that for if not for adults?
I love this show and my sons do to. It's just brilliant.
Haunted (2018)
Stop saying these are true stories!!!
Almost all the supposed true stories make zero
Logical sense. The people involved seem to all acting like idiots and come across as insanely naive.
Case in point the second episode of season 1. So your grand parents appear to be the most prolific serial killers in US history with what appears to be countless victims oh and grandpa may be possessed or something. So when they die and the grandson moves into the murder house he finds all the souvenirs from all the victims and what does he do with this evidence? Call the police or FBI? No he Just chucks it into the trash and ignores it. WHAT?!!!
Such a promising show ruined by terrible internal logic. If these stories are true you don't have to spice them up as much as they do. But they come across as fake and totally stupid. A shame really.
