The Kindness of Strangers (2019)
A beautiful story, superbly acted and directed
At the time of writing, this film has an average of 6.5, which for me confirms that IMDb ratings are meaningless. I guess it's because of the lack of action, except for the cop beating up his dad. Many complain about it depicting NYC but was made somewhere else. I guess these people have also complained that Gravity wasn't made in orbit around the Earth.
For me, it was a beautiful, warm, heartfelt story, with great acting, believable characters. A film to get you believing in the human race despite all the war and misery in the news broadcasts. Worthy of an Oscar or two. The director is a master of films about the human condition.
Liebes Kind (2023)
One of the best crime thrillers ever
It was interesting to read other reviews comparing this to Dark. It's nothing like Dark, which I loved, incidentally - no supernatural stuff, just a straight out crime story, with lots of tension, conundrums and plot twists. Superbly acted by the whole team, brilliant writing and direction. I can't recall anything recently that has been at this level - maybe the Prime Suspect series with Helen Mirren, but they are not recent. Don't understand those who complain that it's full of characters doing things that no sensible person would do. All the psychological portraits were spot on. And the ending was just wonderful - a final twist. What a survivor! 11 out of 10.
Redemption (2022)
Full of clichés
Don't understand how this garbage has got such high ratings. Poor acting, even worse script which is full of holes. Main character supposed to be a DI behaving like a novice, breaking into a flat and leaving her fingerprints everywhere. Cliché after cliché, main character goes unaccompanied to remote lockup in pouring rain and guess who turns up? Ooo, the big bad guy, who would've thought it. Gave up at end of episode 3. Couldn't take anymore and didn't give a damn how it all turns out in the end.
Stargate (1994)
What a load of rubbish
To all of you who have given this a top review, can you please let me know what you're on so I can get some of it?
To everyone else, don't waste your time. It's like an Indiana Jones film without the humour. Far fetched yet highly predictable plot, rubbish acting. Just one big yawn. I switched off after an hour and a half. I have made a mental note to avoid any film with Kurt Russell in. It's like watching a block of wood trying to act.
Passengers (2016)
100% garbage.
All you people who gave this a good rating - I will never forgive you. Corny schmaltzy total garbage. Not one believable second. Hammy acting. Stupid plot. Why did they bother? Don't waste your time.
Equinox (2020)
Atmospheric but....
... in the final analysis, a waste of four and a half hours. Mystical nonsense which peters out into nothing.
Sage femme (2017)
As close to perfection as you can come
A beautiful story, beautifully told and filmed. Great acting from the two Catherine's and also from Olivier Gourmet as Paul. Unlike some other reviewers, I had no problems with the believability of the story. Pacing is just how I like it. Leaves a really warm feeling afterwards. Memorable. Would be happy to watch it again in a few years time.
Little Joe (2019)
Is Little Joe a metaphor for social media?
Have to say I agree with a lot of the earlier comments about the music. Can't believe anyone would give any award for this film, least of all the acting. Most of it looks like a bunch of amateurs doing a first rehearsal. The exception is Kerry Fox as Bella, the only believable human being in the film and for whom I have given the two stars. Afterwards, I thought that maybe Little Joe was a metaphor for something and the first thing that came to mind was Facebook and Twitter which seem to have infected everyone like a virus (from which you will understand that I'm not a user of social media). Anyway, if you want to see this film, wait until it comes on TV for free - not worth paying money for.
McDonald & Dodds (2020)
Really poor and overacted
Reminded me at times of some of the worst US series, such as Murder She Said. Pinches ideas from Colombo too. In first episode nearly everyone is overacting to the hilt. I guess it's intended to be funny but it just made me groan. Added to which the faux King Lear allusion is such a cliche now. Just a big yawn.
Mal de pierres (2016)
A simply beautiful film
Engrossing story; wonderful acting, not only from Marion Cotillard but from the entire cast; ultimately heartwarming. The ending was unexpected but perfectly fitting. One I could watch again in a few years time.
Love Actually (2003)
Worst Christmas film ever
A film I wish I could give 0 stars to. No real people, just caricatures. Everyone involved with this film should have been strangled at birth. And if you like it, there is absolutely no hope for you.
No Offence (2015)
Let me out of here
I don't think my wife and I have ever been so unanimously quick to grab the remote and switch something off as with part 1 of this. From the first scenes in the taxi which were totally unbelievable, to the chase of the murder suspect and then Dinah arriving at work the next day, it was just awful. I think we only saw a maximum of 5 minutes but that was enough. Dreadful acting - can't recall seeing worse. I read in other reviews that this was supposed to be comic. To me it looked like a rush job with its corny, unfunny script - just something to get on the screen as quickly as possible. I guess many will think that I haven't watched enough of it to comment but just the fact that two people reacted so fast to get it OFF the screen as quickly as possible is comment in itself. For masochists only.
Meeres Stille (2013)
A film that stays with you
I think this is my first review. No spoilers - the summary says enough.
Wonderful acting, beautiful cinematography and an intriguing, haunting double storyline which merges near the end. As a debut film, this is superb work. The major characters – Helen, Johannes, Frances and Leon – all have great depth.
This is probably not a film for those who like a lot of action. It's slow moving, but necessarily so and the 2 hours 22 minutes never drags. I'm intrigued though that it was first shown at Sao Paolo Film Festival in 2013 while it doesn't seem to have gone on general release until 2015 (Germany) and it didn't reach Denmark until May 2016 - despite several film festival nominations and awards.
Gravity (2013)
A film with no redeeming qualities
This is where I get really annoyed that there is no possibility of giving a film zero. I am also pre-warned about not adding spoilers. How could I possible say anything that would spoil this film?
Visuals? mwah
Acting? The pits.
Storyline? As one reviewer said, could be written on the back of a cigarette packet (and he LIKED the film). Plus it's totally unbelievable.
Dialogues? Corny as corny can be.
Characters: 1D
Meaning: To make money for the producers.
