The Deer Hunter (1978)
Brutal
One of the most brutal films that has the Vietnam war as one of its main stages.
The performances are all incredible, the scenes of violence are impactful and striking, the characters are developed in curious ways and the acts become increasingly harrowing as the work progresses.
I find it curious how the editing of this film was divided: The first act is the wedding, the second act is the war and the third act is the return to the big city. We don't have transitions, just situations are shown to us in abrupt ways. I didn't give it a 10 precisely because of the unnecessarily drawn-out first act, but nothing serious that would compromise the quality of the film.
The Russian roulette scenes are heavy, classic and realistic. De Niro's scene with Walken at the table inspired many other media, such as the game CoD: Black Ops and the series Everybody Hates Chris!
I was surprised watching it because I thought we would only have ONE Russian roulette scene, but it turned out that Russian roulette became one of the main topics of the film. The ending even involves this kind of torture too.
Sasquatch Sunset (2024)
Mediocre
The film is mediocre! A huge waste of potential. It has actors who appear to be committed, a very good and original idea and a few moments that surprise us, however, the film does not sustain itself for almost 90 minutes.
The humor is scatological, forced and often pointless. The film only has the four bigfoot characters, and no humans appear throughout the entire film, although we have traces of humans hanging around nearby, such as the camp, the road, etc... no other group of bigfoots appears, and the ending is ridiculous ! They arrive in a famous area where people believe in Bigfoot, and no one comes there to see the creatures. The film is boring as hell.
Sting (2024)
Nice
I had a lot of fun! It's not as good as the film Vermines that came out recently and is also about a killer spider, however, it's a cool low-budget film that mixes CGI with practical effects.
The film's atmosphere reminded me of the great Eight Legged Freaks with funny characters and absurd moments, and the third act is sensational, delivering bloody deaths and a sinister spider chase.
It's worth watching, it's really cool.
The film could have had more characters, as it is strange to see a building with very few people living in it.
I hope the film gets a sequel, and that it's even better! I'm not going to tell you the ending, obviously, but I remembered the ending of the 1998 Godzilla, which, by the way, had no sequel.
Braindead (1992)
Ultra funny!
Classic ultraviolent zombie exploitation. This film remains extremely entertaining to this day! Despite being very low budget, disgusting and super aggressive, it's really fun and makes us notice the love for the art that the production had. This film was clearly made with immense care by people who really liked what they were doing there! And it's cool to see what blockbuster director Peter Jackson enjoys and did back in the day.
This film is really quite disgusting, however, it should not be taken seriously! He is purposely like that! Made to laugh! The extreme violence here is cartoonish and exaggerated, and the last act is a tremendous gorefest! Perhaps the biggest gorefest of that decade.
It's a film worth watching! Zombie classic!
Mothers' Instinct (2024)
Interesting Suspense
Interesting suspense. The performances of the two main women are great, and the plot in general is tense and distressing. At any time after the tragedy, we have the impression that something equally terrible will happen when we least expect it because of the traumatized, angry and distressed mother. The film always shows increasing tension, however, which will only unfold in the third act.
Some scenes are very torturous and distressing, and the film conveys this atmosphere of heavy mourning very well.
I think it needs a bit of pulse for the plot to have more weight. If there had been more violence and more blood, perhaps the film would have been wilder and more interesting, but the production chose to focus on the anguish and the ending.
The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023)
Awesome!
Incredible film! Simple, direct, fun and surprising. It has great actors, at least two very good plot twists, a cool plot and a lot of unexpected violence.
The atmosphere of this film is very reminiscent of the Coen brothers' films, with comical and unexpected situations during different moments. There's a lot of sinism, irony and comedy here, in the middle of a serious and paranoid plot!
It's very worth it. One of the best low-budget films of recent times, and it's only 90 minutes long! I would have more than 100! It felt like "I want more". Looking forward to this director's next work.
I highlight here that actor Richard Brake is one of the most underrated actors in his field. The guy is intimidating and works very well!
Animal Kingdom (2010)
more or less
This film has an interesting atmosphere, a heavy story and good actors, but the plot is not captivating or entertaining. The film is boring as hell most of the time!
I like the tension and that feeling of constant danger, however, these elements are not explored much.
The first act of the film is cool. The second act is mediocre! The third act is just interesting.
I believe that in the hands of a better director and a screenwriter with more talent, the film would be better.
For those who enjoy Australian films, I recommend the Wolf Creek films, especially the first one, which was based on a macabre real case.
I-ut saram (2012)
Nice suspense
Good film, but it could have been better. I like suspense and I like watching a film in which the feeling of danger for the residents of some place is increasing. Generally in South Korean films, the killers are extremely merciless, so watching this film already having in mind what these films from that country are like, makes us apprehensive.
I didn't like the CGI in this film, because it's very unnecessary, and also the visions that some characters have during the work. I don't like it when they fill some nit-picking films. I also didn't like how slow some characters were to start acting against the villain.
Sin nombre (2009)
Brutal
This film is extremely brutal and heavy. I didn't expect it to be this good and tense. It's really a great find, as it's a film that isn't talked about much and should be publicized more.
The film shows a morbid adventure. An escape that a young boy makes to get away from an ultra-violent gang in Honduras. The problem is that this gang is ruthless.
The film has great performances, immense mounting tension, a brutal ending and a relatively short running time of less than 100 minutes.
The film is very realistic, but some character decisions are simply stupid and irritating. There are many things in this film that make us nervous.
Abigail (2024)
Very funny!
Better than I thought it would be! I thought it would just be a generic slot film, but it's fun, very entertaining, has remarkable scenes, lots of blood and good actors. To be honest, it's one of the best vampire films of recent years, as most vampire films of recent times are mostly pretty bad.
I think this thing about mixing dance with gore is pretty silly, however, I know that many films nowadays need to adapt to the new generation and new social networks, so the more dances the film has, the more chances it has of going viral on TikTok, see M3gan and Wednesday.
There's a lot of nonsense, but there's a lot that works. It's cool, fun and has unexpected mutilations.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Great and funny!
This film is incredible! It's incredible to think that an elderly director who made adventure films with penguins also directed this brutal and aggressive film with brutal car chases, lots of shootouts, deaths and adrenaline.
This film is one of the best blockbusters of the last decade, and it remains fun as hell to this day. The practical effects are great and the few CGI effects are also good.
My favorite film in the saga is the second, but this one comes in second place. Practically equal.
I couldn't understand the chronology. For example, is this the same Max from the previous three films or is he just someone who was nicknamed Mad Max? The film has some mysteries that were not fully explained, but they do not compromise the overall quality of the work.
It's pure entertainment!
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)
Cool, that's all
The weakest film in the saga, but still, it has cool things to highlight.
I didn't like the fact that cars were not main and ultra-necessary elements in this film. In the previous films, especially the second, vehicles are necessary for everyone, and the best scene in the film contains an insane car chase! In this third film, the vehicles are secondary elements.
Here, we have new characters and an attempt at civilization that is cool to see, but not very entertaining.
Mel Gibson is still as good as usual. I enjoyed the soundtrack and found the ending interesting.
One thing I don't understand here is: How did Max not recognize his colleague from the previous film? And where is the guy's wife? And how did this colleague screw Max after everything they went through in the second film?
Mad Max 2 (1981)
Great!
Much better than the first! This is probably the best film in the Mad Max saga. In the first film the world was still relatively civilized, with normal homes, ordinary people living around, and not much chaos other than that caused by troublesome gangs. In this second film, the world has already collapsed, and the atmosphere is totally different! Mad Max 2 is one of the most influential post-apocalyptic films of all time! It inspired the games Wasteland and Fallout, and is referenced in many media, even South Park.
The acting here is good, the action scenes are extraordinary and full of impressive practical effects, and the plot is much wilder and more fun to follow. The feeling of danger and urgency here is much greater, and the character Max has practically become a force of nature, a legendary character. Here, we have more enemies, more sinister cars and more violence. The film is a little over 90 minutes long, and every minute matters! There's a lot of tension, a lot of action and the third act is sublime. The best vehicle chase of the 80s happens exactly in this film. The ending, with the last scene, is the icing on the cake too.
Mad Max (1979)
Cool and aggressive
The film is a drama with action and adventure elements. Unlike later films where the apocalyptic and ultra-violent world is already established, this one is much more "down to earth". There is a standard civilization here, however, there are violent criminals. The film shows experienced police officers facing a sinister motorcycle gang. There are a lot of cool chase scenes here, which are the highlight of the film.
The performances range from simple to some good. Highlight goes to Mel Gibson, who is charismatic and does well in the role.
The villains are detestable, and from the second to the third act we hope that Max can stop everyone in his path. The ending of the film is brutal, fun and remarkable, and certainly inspired a famous series of horror films involving a cutting saw (I think you already know what I'm talking about). If the film had a little more action in the first act, and some more interesting characters besides Mel Gibson and two or three others, I would give it a higher rating. Either way, it's a cool movie.
Club Zero (2023)
Just Interesting
The film addresses a very interesting and distressing topic, but it was not executed masterfully. The performances are good and the story gradually keeps us intrigued, but the work in general doesn't have much of a "pulse". The film spends a long time without going anywhere, and when we think that a climax will arrive and that we will be shocked, predictable or simple things happen.
At least I'll say one thing: The background scene during the end credits is very interesting and a little scary. I think it was the scariest part of the film, but obviously I won't say what it's about here because I don't want to spoil it.
Gojira -1.0 (2023)
The best giant monster movie I've seen in a long time! A beautiful surprise!
The best giant monster movie I've seen in a long time! A beautiful surprise!
Japan did very well! Here, Godzilla is a truly immense and terrifying creature. We feel sorry for the humans who run and try to escape the monster's fury. The huge creature is truly evil by nature, and has an extremely intimidating posture. Godzilla's face exudes something terrible, he really scares you!
It's so worth it! The best Godzilla film of recent decades, without a shadow of a doubt. I really hope it gets a sequel.
It has terrifying scenes, adrenaline scenes and very emotional scenes.
I really liked all three acts. They are very efficient and well made, leaving no doubts and not making the viewer look stupid. For more films in this style!
Vermines (2023)
Creepy and funny
A big surprise. It seems like this film would be another generic film about disgusting and scary animals, but it is more than that! It's a well-made, genuinely scary and entertaining film.
The characters are varied and interesting to follow, the spiders here are really scary and monstrous, especially from the second act of the film onwards, and not everyone is stupid! Despite the mistakes that led to what happens in the building, most of the characters act correctly according to a common intelligence, and that's a very good thing.
There are terrifying scenes here of chases and people trapped with few options. It's so worth it! I haven't seen a spider movie this good since Eight Legged Freaks. It is worth it.
It doesn't have many negative points. Maybe just a lack of explanation about the extraordinary growth of the spiders, and because they didn't show the situation of some small town near that desert where the spiders were found, since there were probably several of them wandering around! Some city may be in trouble with an epidemic of giant spiders.
Double Blind (2023)
Boring
So boring! The film has a cool idea and a good length for the genre, however, the character development is terrible, the film's pace is mediocre and the ending is boring.
I don't give it a lower rating because at least the actors try hard and some are even good, and there are at least two really scary scenes, which are the scene with the guy following the darkness while we discover that he has passed away and the scene where the woman sees a type of demon after dying.
I think there are cooler confinement films out there, like Cube (1997).
Perhaps this film, with a more developed script and in the hands of a more experienced director, will come out something better.
Boy Kills World (2023)
New, original and funny!
What a pleasant surprise! This is the fun and ultra-violent exploitation film we needed. It's pure entertainment!
A lot of people nowadays love to say that films are all the same and that there are only remakes and reboots, but when something fun, original and new like this comes along, almost no one talks about it. I think it's hypocrisy or teenage drama.
Anyway, this film is cool as hell and reminds me a lot of old grindhouse films. It also reminds me of a mix of Kill Bill and The Raid. It has varied and cool characters, incredible fights with lots of blood, synthwave plays and the ending is really cool.
This film is a pleasant surprise.
Love Lies Bleeding (2024)
Cool
This movie is cool, but it has a lot of teenage freshness. It looks like a film made by an angry teenager, but it has many qualities at least.
From the second act onwards, the film picks up and becomes really cool, with a lot of tension, violence and conflicts between characters. It's hard to see a character being saved here!
For example, the character who kills a woman attacker is the same character who also attacks a woman in the film and even tries to kill her at one point.
The ending is funny as hell! The production must have had fun making this work. Anyway, if the film had less nitpicking and a little more action, my rating would be higher.
Monkey Man (2024)
Good
This movie is good, but it could have been better. It has great action scenes with a lot of adrenaline and blood, and the protagonist is very cool to follow, however, in the first two acts the plot is not very well developed, and many scenes are placed in a disconnected way one after the other.
Aside from the fight scenes in the ring, we have at least TWO great action scenes in this film, and they are excellent. It's a cool film to watch on a Saturday afternoon.
I'm sure they were inspired by the excellent film The Raid.
The film has nothing like John Wick, just a reference at the beginning, but it looks a lot like Indonesian action films.
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Good horror movie
The film is very good, and I'm happy to see actor David Dastmalchian gaining some prominence in the Horror genre. He acted very well in Prisoners (2013).
The film has genuinely scary moments, and is largely a mockumentary.
It has great acting, practical effects scenes mixed with CGI effects that work, an interesting plot and an enigmatic ending.
I just don't give this film a higher rating because it gets lost in the third act. It doesn't make sense for the camera style to change from that 70s style to the modern style all of a sudden. That scene ends the found footage style! In addition to the camera changing, we now see Jack's insane mind, but how is that possible? Did the show's camera get into his mind too? Another thing I didn't understand is the hypnosis scene. If we saw all that happen in the hypnosis session, why when they went back to the tape, nothing happened? Anyway, there are some weird problems, but for the most part the film is good and worth it.
The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015)
Revolting
Better than the original film, however, with lower quality than the 2010 remake.
From what I read about the real case, this 2015 film is the most faithful, however, it isn't very entertaining and doesn't satisfy either. It's simply revolting not to see the prisoners revolting! All the prisoners had many chances every day to rebel and beat the guards, but no one took any action.
Either way, the performances are great and if they intended to anger the public, they succeeded.
A small negative point of the film for me is that Daniel simply disappeared out of nowhere. It was not clear what criteria they used for people to leave or not, it seems that everything happened haphazardly. Pretty strange.
The Experiment (2010)
Better than the original film
I thought this remake was MUCH better than the original. This film has more entertainment and less nonsense. In the original film, the prisoners do practically nothing against the guards! There is no satisfaction! Here the prisoners revolt and beat the guards.
This film is half an hour shorter, and much more enjoyable.
I also liked the performances and the mystery behind the experiment, since the scientists behind it practically don't appear.
I found few negative points in this film, and one of them was the fact that one of the guards paints his nails and puts makeup on his eyes every day, since it's hard to believe that a guard busy in a serious experiment has the time and desire to look good. And of so many useful things to have on hand there, would he choose just that?
Civil War (2024)
A pleasant surprise!
This film is a pleasant surprise! At first, based on the trailers, it seemed like a generic social criticism film, however, it manages to deliver tension, entertainment and questions.
All the actors here are very good, and I highlight the talent of Wagner Moura, one of the most underrated and forgotten actors in the film industry. This guy can act really well! I recommend you watch the great Elite Squad films where he stars.
Here in Civil War, we focus on journalists, and see how they live in the midst of moral dilemmas. We have several dialogues throughout the film, however, they are all interesting, and it's really cool to see how the production makes the transitions from dialogue to action here! The sound work that the production had was incredible. The gunshot sounds are totally realistic, loud and imposing! They're scary! They really give a great feeling of danger and extreme violence. I believe this film will receive an Oscar nomination in some sound category.
The last act of the film is pure action, and the last take is very well done. It's worth watching!
