The Unholy (2021)
Perfectly serviceable, it just doesn't add anything new but subverts some expectations
Most of the film is pretty predictable and adds nothing new but it does subvert expectations a few times.
Jeffrey Dean Morgans character is a bit of a grifter but never leans too hard into it.
There's sort of a fight at the end which is kind of cool since a lot of films like this would end before a confrontation, also God saving Alice at the end was sort of refreshing in that the film wasn't desperately hinting at a sequel and just sort of wrapped everything up.
The actors were pretty good, some nice cinematography but the presentation of the demon creature was a bit lackluster, I like the design and even some jump scares but it loses it's alure when you keep getting cgi face filling the screen.
This film would be better suited having been made 15 years ago or made recently but with more practical effect inclusions.
Definitely far from the worst horrors in recent years but it just doesn't do anything innovative to stand out.
Dark Side of the Ring: The Ultra-Violence of Nick Gage (2021)
Ignore the drones, it is good, Gage is good and interesting
The people rating this 1 presumably gave New Jack a 10, Gage is a very good wrestler and performer, anyone who thinks deathmatches are not good hasn't watched them, it's fine to not like them and it to not be your thing but they are art as much as any wrestling match.
What you're seeing is WWE fans who are so blindly indoctrinated into 1 boring style so they can't open their minds to other wrestling such as Nick Gage's. Also you already have proof that they didn't watch or know what they're talking about as even if you don't like his wrestling, he's very obviously an interesting subject. You're a sports entertainment fan if you only watch WWE and do the industry no favours.
That's My Boy (2012)
If it was a 22 year old man and a 14 year old girl this movie would have never been released
Was 2012 really so long ago that an adult female raping a young boy(he can't give consent look up the law) is considered for laughs?
Imagine for 1 second that instead of an older woman seducing a young teenage boy it was an adult man seducing a young teenage girl, would anyone be laughing as she is lured into the office and molested by an older man, there's no movie.
For some reason Sandler and his entourage of lazy, uncharismatic and childlike writers hold large stock in the idea of double standards, casual sexual assault, outdated, bottom of the barrel and overused concepts for comedies.
I'm baffled by anyone in involved in writing this and how they're still working today. This is the lowest of the low and the laziest of the lazy.
You can make plenty of arguments that Sandler still makes good movies (Uncut Gems a few years later) but this is deplorable and should be seen as a stain for all involved.
Once again an adult woman who is the boys teacher seduces and rapes him, he's not old enough to consent or understand. It's a horrible situation and it'd be horrible if the roles were reversed.
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Better than KOTM but has the same problems
I think the Gareth Edwards Godzilla is still the best of the current series as no other film in the modern Godzilla universe has been able to replicate his ability to make the scale of the monsters seem outstanding. As well as the sound editing. The humans were a bit bland but not plain unlikable as in the sequels (short of Skull Island).
The monster fighting is fun but the movie still feels one monster sequence short that could have been added or extended over the painful human characters who just quip or cry. The young girl added is fine enough if not shoe horned in and deaf literally just so Kong has a way to communicate.
It was all very predictable but still enjoyable to witness and it has some beautiful shots and cinematography, but it doesn't make the most out of the amazing new landscapes and again doesn't really have a sense of scale.
Mechagodzilla was simply awesome, silly and a joy to watch. The circumstances around it's creation are dumb and stereotypically and comically villainous but in fairness you can't really create Mechagodzilla without it being self aware and goofy.
Just cut out the boring and unfunny humans rather than adding more each movie. You need tension between the fights and to build an atmosphere but there must be better ways of doing that over Milly Bobby Brown wondering for 2 hours or Kyle Chandler doing nothing.
So to summarise it was my third favourite of the monsterverse behind Godzilla 2014 which I think was the best directed and Kong which had the best story and characters, which I guess makes it my second worst but I prefer to think of it as third best.
