A different kind of cinema
2 February 2019
In a cinema world plagued by sequels, remakes, action movies and superheroes, Cuarón becomes Theo Angelopoulos and takes us back to a different era of film making; an almost back to basics approach.

It's not a crowd pleaser, but those who do watch it, will appreciate it

Meh
29 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The acting was great from all, esp Rami, though I really wished they'd not have done any close ups of him lip syncing (they were quite cringe). The story was too boring and gimmicky for my liking (how they came up with their anthems was an eye roll), most superficial about his lifestyle, big dramatic scenes were dragging on unnecessarily with monologues and big pauses befitting a Theo Aggelopoulos film, and, I'm sorry, but the last 10 mins of showing us 3 full songs from Live Aid was a bit much with the audience doing singalongs and waving hands in the air. This is Mamma Mia for the old school rock fans. Which is a real shame. The only saving grace is that it ends at 1985 and doesn't show how the remaining members milked Freddie's legacy for their own gain (though they still do by producing this). Quite happy with myself for having watched it at my local cinema on their half price ticket day; I'd have been asking for my money back had I paid full price.

Interesting but not groundbreaking
10 October 2018
It's an interesting one to watch, you certainly won't get bored, but it's hardly new as a concept or groundbreaking. If you've watched Broadchurch or Bodyguard, they're far superior in the "whodunit" aspect with a new suspect in each episode and unexpected twists. Nowhere near as good or original or refreshing as La casa de papel, but nice to watch nonetheless. The characters aren't quite as likable (personally, I found myself disliking all of them, to different degrees) and they're not people you can easily picture behaving like this at 16 years old. They talk and behave like much older, and that makes it hard to fall for it.

Nice but The Newsroom is far better
26 September 2018
OK, so we have The Guardian Vs The Sun. A Piers Morgan and a Tony Blair. That's basically all you need to know. Just watch The Newsroom. Again.

Are open relationships all that big a twist?
26 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Oh, OK, so a couple in a stagnating relationship go down the open route. Hardly a novelty these days, unless you're a conservative mid-70s living in a small little town. How very handy that one of them is a therapist and can handle the awkwardness of the situation. And oh so very charming they brief their children about their arrangement. Because we all live in an uber modern and liberated world. And they can both find partners oh so easily and simultaneously so no one feels left out. And then the writers decide to go down the morality route. Jealousy starts creeping in, society starts judging, one gets more serious with the extra marital thing, whereas the other is more superfluous about it like a teenager. The teenagers surprisingly are more adults than the parents, but anyway. As an idea, it was interesting in the first 2 episodes, the next 2 were a bore and bog standard approach. Here's hoping the rest pick up and surprise.
