The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003)
My comments are about this movie and how much I liked it.
A perfect movie. Probably the film of the year in my opinion. Just topping Lost in Translation. McNamara comes off as a very nice, smart, and passionate man. The movie is very interesting and rewarding from beginning to end. The movie isn't flashy. A lot of the movie is just McNamara talking into the camera. But it's very well paced and in my opinion, both the audio and the video were well done from beginning to end. What makes the movie so powerful is the audio from McNamara (of course). I didn't really know what the movie was going to be about, and I'd never heard of Robert S. McNamara before. And I am so glad that I saw the movie and heard what McNamara has to say. One kinda small thing I liked about this movie is how they constantly edited McNamara's "lessons." He maybe rambled on too much but they constantly were cutting out small parts of his speeches to make a smooth more stream lined speech, and I think that helped the movie a lot.
The Dock Brief (1962)
peter sellers is great.
i think this movie is great. it's really funny. the whole movie is pretty unique. like how it tells the story. and the story itself is pretty interesting and very funny. but the most enjoyable part of the movie is the conversations between the lawyer and the murderer. they are so funny cause the actors are so good. peter sellers is great in this movie. the british humor stands the test of time.
Gangs of New York (2002)
one of my favorite movies made during my lifetime.
i liked this movie because it fulfilled something i didn't know i was wanting so bad. i'm 22 and up until this movie i had never really been to such a big movie. the "classic" kind of story. the great acting. the heart put into. the american story in it. just the hugeness of it all. i've never been to a theatre and saw a movie like that when it's just come out (i've seen the godfather in a theatre at re-release which isn't the same to me). like i feel like it's how people are supposed to feel after they go out to the movies. like i'd heard older people talking about movies in the way i talk about this movie and i now understand that they don't make movies like they used to, for better or worse. daniel day lewis is so good to me in this movie. and you don't realize it while he's doing it. you see how much you were into his character after a scene and then you are like "woh!" i can't see this being a best movie ever kind of movie. but i will always remember it as one of my favorites. it's not perfect but that's holding it up to high standards. it's great! and i liked diaz in this movie a lot and wouldn't want anyone else in it (and i am not a huge diaz fan).
Waking Life (2001)
NOT hippster coffee shop blathering(with beautiful animation)
i don't think this movie is pretenscious. i think it's a very honest and open movie. and some people will be annoyed by that. the movie overall is a bunch of people speaking their minds. and it isn't like the director/writer speaking his mind on some topic. but it's like a lot of different people speaking their minds (and the director shows what he wants but i think there is something for everyone if you give it a chance). and they all have interesting takes on what they are talking about. and you will agree with some people and disagree with others (not that it's a right wing-left wing debate type movie). i don't think the movie is about what they are talking about anyways. it is in someway but i'm not sure in what way. and i probably should know but i think it's fine if you don't. you can still really enjoy this film. and by the way the art to me is undeniably interesting and pleasing. even still there is least one thing that the people are talking about in the movie that they are trying to get to the bottom of. one theme that does end up coming up a lot. and the movie's take on "this" is very interesting as what final thought they seem to have on the matter is interesting as well. and this movie does end up having enough of a story (with an end). so basically the movie is a clear story that is mixed with unclear points on the side. and the clear story doesn't really come above the unclear parts until past the half-way point of the movie. but it's there. it's not your typical early ninties coffee shop blathering to me. it seems to be from a lot of different people other than late 20's hippsters. older crazy men. middle aged over the top men. old women. old men. older 20 something women and men. one "black" person (so i guess it's not all that diverse). and the things they talk about are all over the place. and even though i think it's a pre 2000 movie. it's not dated or all about the end of the century. it's about very general things about all types of problems and questions. and you may think that they are way off if you are a really radical thinker. but most people will probably be into what they are talking about. and it's still beautiful and interesting. the people and their ideas. and the art(animation).
Átame! (1989)
very interesting, well done movie.
i think this movie is great. i really liked "talk to her" too. "tie me up tie me down" isn't quite as nice as "talk to her". but i like this one better than "all about my mother," which is "supposed to be" better. this movie was very interesting to me. i really got into it. antonio banderas isn't amazing or anything, but he does a pretty good job. it's a strange movie and i think it's very well done. i don't really know what to say about it, but i like this director a lot now.
Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003)
give reese a chance!
i can't stand how when you leave comments to movies on this site there is the part where you have your "one line summary" and it says underneath that "of your comments, not of the film" why is that there? i don't know what to put cause a summary of my comments is a summary of my comments on the movie. so they end up being the same thing. i guess it's too complicated for me. BUT this movie IS good. i saw it in the summer when it was really hot and i didn't have air conditioning. and i got talked into seeing it. and i was very pleasantly surprised. the message of the movie is good. and reese witherspoon is amazing. she was cracking me up. i think she should be in better movies cause she seems to be very talented. the movie has other problems but those two good things were more then enough to make me really enjoy the movie. i ended up seeing the first one too which is really funny too. and i hate fashion and rich people jokes. but it's all about reese and her delivery. it works somehow so well. and the dumb blonde cliche. i don't know how it works but she is good. so see the movies and give her a chance if you haven't. now i have a one line summary add on!
American Splendor (2003)
pretty good movie, not so great material
i think the movie is ok. i don't think the jokes are all that funny. Paul Giamatti is really really good in this though. but i don't think he plays Harvey Pekar all that accurately. if he would have played him as he is the movie would not have been as likable. i think the biggest problem with the movie is Pekar's self-righteousness. it gets really annoying and i couldn't get into the movie cause of it. i think he is a very sad man. and in a sad situation. his wife is played very well and the guy who does Crumb is really good too. The movie is interesting and very well done, even though it has it's sappy moments. and it also made me really interested in reading the comics.
Panic Room (2002)
great movie.
nearly flawless. fincher thinks of everything. almost no plot holes. fincher really cares about his movies. if you go into it thinking something big and meaningful that makes you think, like fight club, is going to happen then you'll be disappointed. but if you don't you should love it. it's smart. it's funny. it's great.
ALSO... this is about a rolling stone magazine review of the movie. i remember after rolling stone first reviewed this movie the reviewer came out like an issue or two later with an add-on review. does anyone have it or know it? it said something about fincher doesn't do movies that mean as little as panic room does. and he thought of some different way to look at the movie that gave the movie a twist. i am just interested in what he said. cause at the time i thought it was interesting but i can't think of what it was.
SPOILER??... the only problem i have with the movie is with the police call while in the panic room. why don't the police get the phone call? it doesn't ruin the movie but fincher has everything else so well thought out that it's a weird mistake to have in there.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
great but too cutesy wootsy
a little too cutesy wootsy. but really a great movie. i can't deny that. it's interesting. it's got the Alley McBeal thing with the fantasy type stuff, but as good or probably better and interesting. it's a non-stop movie full of lots of things happening. you have to just sit back and let it happen i think. it's also nice and stylish and has great colors.
Rushmore (1998)
my favorite movie
My favorite movie. To me it is perfect. The actors are right on. Everyone of them. The main three and Dirk are amazing. The story is classic. The way it deals with the comedy is perfect. The comic delivery is perfect, "stupid" jokes to "smart" ones. The sad parts of the story are told beautifully. The happy parts aren't any where near cheap. "You" really like all of the characters and understand them. And feel their pain. Part of what's good about this movie is how pleasantly surprised you are by it's diversity and depth. The cinematography is subtle but brilliant. PLUS the music is awesome!
