Professionals (2020)
Cheesy but enjoyable
It has Brendan Frazer's charm and enthusiasm, and Tom Welling's beautiful face, so I enjoyed it. Is it flat in spots and a bit predictable. Sure! Is it great TV, no, but it is definitely a fun watch. Lots of action, some trite dialogue and the back ground music is OTT on occasions but the story is good, there are some good plot twists, and the premise is rather cool. Don't know why so many have rated it so badly, as it is a nice enough show to veg out too and there is certainly always room for Brendan Frazer's goofy charm.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
A bit slow but setting things up
Why all the hate? All these negative reviews seem to be done with the attitude of expecting a sequel to come from a stasis chamber and not change from the old. That attitude prevents shows from finding their feet and becoming something new and possibly even better. The only problem most of you seem to have is does not have a light hearted feel like the Star Treks of old. (which The Orville does very well I agree.).While this episode was a little slow, and even a little silly in spots, the whole point of it was to set up the characters for the next aspect of the story. As to it being dark, well guess what. The future will be like the past and have dark times too. That is the nature of the world, including the Federation world, I am sure. I am enjoying this and see it as an overarching story of Picard forging a new set of colleagues to try and save his old friend Data's offspring and hopefully find out what skulduggery is afoot within the Federation he used to love, and wants to save. Reading all these negative reviews raving on that it is "not like the Star Trek of old", makes me want to shake my head in despair. That so many want things replicated exactly as they were, is quite frankly, an exercise in futility. Why futile!!! Because then others would say the show is stale and out of touch with modern thinking.
October Faction (2020)
Very entertaining so far!
Honestly the 5.4 rating is not a fair score and I hope everyone gives it a go as I feel it has potential. I'm really enjoying this show and the 3 episodes I've seen. The story had enough unexpected twists and turns in the first episode to keep me intrigued. I don't agree the acting is bad at all! It's more like a few of the actors are still finding their feet in their new roles, so the nuances aren't quite there yet.I do wonder at the choice for Fred though. I remember him in Dark Angel and like him as an actor, but he looks older than the actress that plays his Mother, nor does he look in the same age group as his wife. Hard to imagine him as the monster fighting type either. That aside, I like it a lot so far.
Deputy (2020)
It has promise.
Whilst it is uneven, has stilted dialogue with an OTT wild west meets city kind of archetypal feel, the premise is still interesting. In these times I can see the potential in this show as most of us want our law enforcement officers to lock up the bad guys, protect the innocent, be honest and use their hearts when on the job. The public are tired of politics and PR nonsense, that protects the bad guys, because at the end of the day the tide of evil seems to be rising way too fast. I give it a 6 really but one extra for the hope that it can become a great show!
Pandora (2019)
Sound premise
I am giving it a 6 but for the possibilities it has. This show has some good ideas and a even a few intriguing mysteries. Certainly enough to keep a viewers interest, when also coupled with a few aspects that are quite fresh and unique. It is a pity the production quality and acting is so basic but even so I think it may have potential. It would be good to think that the young cast will find their feet and the writers will flesh out the characters so they feel more like people and less like archetypes. If you watch this, watch with a view to it's possibilities and maybe this show will find its feet and blossom.
The Choice (2016)
Very enjoyable
I am always boggled by people giving bad reviews to romance movies that follow the formula for romance movies. Boy and girl meet, have some issues, resolve the issues, fall in love, a complication arises but it's eventually over come and happily ever after is finally achieved. This is the formula and for many of us that is all we need or want. We don't want too dark or complex, we don't want too much raunch, we don't want cerebral character interaction and we don't want it to be too different or clever. We just want an enjoyable romance movie that is well acted with some humour, some pathos and some heart. I watched The Choice not expecting anything more than a romance movie and that is what it is. The acting was uni-formally good, the scenery sublime, the characters very likable but not perfect and it moved me to tears in a few scenes. Predictable and cliche, sure, but very enjoyable even so.
Frankie Drake Mysteries (2017)
A Lesser Miss Fisher
So many aspects of this show are blatant copies of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. It is set in the 1920's, has a main female lead who solves crimes and who adores men. She dresses with flair, indulges herself in all pleasures, has a friend in the police force, has several quirky off- siders,(though female in this case) has no time for racism, can fight, is able to traverse various social levels, is beautiful, spirited and charming, has a keen intellect and can turn her hand to almost anything. The main difference is that the lead actress just doesn't quite gel. I liked her in a previous show I saw her in, but she is just too modern in her intonation, movements and mannerisms. I wanted to love this show but it is a pale copy and needs a lot more individuality.
Lost in Space (2018)
Diamond dirt and chicken feet
What's with the plot holes that are so large they should be called sink holes. Don't productions have a storyboard to refer to anymore and an editor to point out glaring things like ..............when the mechanic dude cuts his fingers on the "diamond dirt", and then the camera pans to a chicken scratching and pecking at the same dirt. Come on!!!!!!! Is it "Super Chicken?" This show like so many nowadays, has heaps of irritating plot and character inconsistencies and uses way too much unrelenting action/danger-drama, (which seem designed to gloss over the lack of sense and continuity). It could be a great show if the attention to story crafting improves but at the moment it's just okay.
Pure Genius (2016)
Hokey but uplifting.
Is it a perfect show? No! It has certainly got a few areas that need tweaking, but it has charm even so!!! Is the acting sketchy at times? Yes! In particular the actor playing the character of James can be incredibly annoying. He needs to work on nuances in his facial expressions instead of always relying on the pursed lips and furrowed brow approach. Are the story lines a bit one dimensional? Oh yeah!!! Whoever is writing this does need to get out into the real world for a bit as many of the character archetypes or story plots are limited in the extreme. Is much of the science possible as yet? Probably not!!!! But that's okay because most of us would like to think this will all be possible one day. This show has its flaws and yet I really really like it? Yep! Really!! It has huge potential and it is so nice to see hope, kindness and compassion as a theme instead of brutality, cruelty, bad behavior or hopelessness. In spite of its flaws, I find myself smiling and feeling happy while watching this show and I believe it should be given a chance to find it niche. I for one want Pure Genius to succeed and believe there is a place for shows with hope and heart.
