Doom Runners (1997)
Well played all round, enjoyable evening entertainment.
I give Doomrunners a healthy 7/10. The score was well chosen, beautifully fitting the mood of the film. Lea Moreno-Young more or less steals the stage. Whether she was intended to lead the piece or not, she does, delivering a subtle and interesting performance as Jada.
I couldn't see an actor out of place in this film. It was concise (if anything too short!) and held my attention quite effortlessly. Bradley Pierce was sweet and intriguing as Adam, and I think well deserving of the 1998 nomination for Best Performance for Leading Young Actor. Even the silent Nathan Jones (Vike) was well played.
Of course, one must not forget the bad-guy. Tim Curry shines as Dr Kao, the evil mind-wipe madman set on destroying the youngsters hopes and chances of lasting happiness. Funny, darkly twisted and beautifully played ; as usual.
I will admit that the point at which we see the storm brewing (in what is obviously time-lapse photography) my enjoyment faltered somewhat – as it would for anyone familiar with time-lapse in the days of CGI. If I were to pick holes, I would say that the poison gas was too obvious a device – and they could have done with a nice fight scene to round it off.
However, even these small moments were not enough to prevent me watching again (and I believe we are now up to five times) for the pure enjoyment of an interesting idea presented well.
